KS&R’s Digital Pulse

Given the introduction of several new companies in the streaming market recently, we hypothesized there might be some increase in the discussion around streaming. However, social media conversation related to streaming has been fairly stable over the past 6 months. KS&R’s SIX (Social Insights Exchange) team dug deeper to gather new insights.

Has The Streaming Social Conversation Changed At All?

Yes – there have been some notable shifts in sentiment. In October, streaming sentiment dipped before quickly rebounding in both November and December.

What Caused This Volatile Net Sentiment?

Reviewing the conversation during this time, we found a lot of focus on the number of streaming services and costs.

(no ads) - $13 - $12 HBO /max - $15 (reportedly) Disney+ - $7 Prime - $9 CBS All Access - $6 Apple TV+ - $5 Showtime - $11 - $9 Almost $90 a month in streaming services. Cutting the cord was supposed to save us how much?”

“Dear Apple, Hulu, Netflix, Disney, Amazon, CBS, NBC, and everyone else trying to create a streaming service: we're not going to pay for eight of these. Work it out.”

So What Caused Sentiment To Bounce Back So Quickly?

The introduction of new premium streaming services like Disney+ and Apple TV+ along with their original shows and appears to at least in part be a driver in the increase in net sentiment. Disney+, in particular, found great success in their new original series The Mandalorian and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

“So far we've enjoyed the new Disney+ streaming! Its originals are great.”

“Disney+’s `The Mandalorian' Tops Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ in Streaming Ratings.”

“Disney+ went live early on my Fire TV! Diving into #TheMandalorian now!”

“Disney+ has a great back catalog compared to most other streaming services.”
