1986 - 1989 Investigated the development of Oriental medicine in America by examining the training of acupuncturist/herbalists and the institutional dynamics at a San Francisco acupuncture school.

1982 Conducted participant observation research in Dharamasala, H.P. India. Funded in part by the Chancellor's Discretionary Fund and the President's Undergraduate Fellowship. Research consisted of work with various Tibetan physicians in the community, primarily Yeshe Donden. Results of research contributed to bachelor's thesis. Slides taken during this trip are part of the slide library at UCSC's McHenry Library and are part of the collection of material connected with Tibetan art at Bienecke Library, Yale.
