Ode (World Premiere – 2019) Choreography: Jamar Roberts Rehearsal Associate: Marion-Skye Brooke Logan Music: Don Pullen Costume design: Jamar Roberts Lighting design: Brandon Stirling Baker Set design: Libby Stadstad A meditation on the beauty and fragility of life in a time of growing gun violence, Ode is the first in a series of three new dance works that company member Jamar Roberts is creating in his role as Ailey’s first-ever Resident Choreographer. Like his critically-acclaimed Members Don’t Get Weary (2017), this work for six dancers will feature a jazz score – Don Pullen’s “Suite (Sweet) Malcolm (Part 1 Memories and Gunshots)” – and Roberts’ own costume designs. “… a powerful and poetic exploration of the effects of gun violence…” Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in The New York Times Jamar Roberts’ Ode. Photo by Paul Kolnik. “’Ode’ feels like another revelation for Ailey. [Robert] Battle is smart to give Roberts a platform to develop… Works such as “Ode” constitute a powerful new direction for the company.” The Washington Post “It’s delicate, daring, and heartbreaking… says something hopeful about the present and future of this company. It now has a resident choreographer with talent and guts.” The New York Times Jamar Roberts Miami native Jamar Roberts graduated from the New World School of the Arts after beginning his studies at the Dance Empire of Miami, where he continues to teach and mentor students each year. He received a fellowship to The Ailey School before becoming a member of Ailey II, Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2002.

JUNE 2020—ISSUE 218 YOUR FREE GUIDE TO THE NYC JAZZ SCENE NYCJAZZRECORD.COM DIGITAL ONLY EDITION those gone silent Freddy rodriguez, sr. 1931-2020 Up until his death in March at 89, tenor saxophonist Freddy Rodriguez led the band at Denver’s famed El Chapultepec jazz club, a gig he held for 40 years. At every gig Freddy would announce it was his birthday, which, at 89 years old, every day you’d want to celebrate as such! He’d also let everyone know he was playing the ‘safe sax’... really a description of his mellow tone inspired by his heroes such as Dexter Gordon and Coleman Hawkins. Musicians would regularly pop in and Freddy enthusiastically welcomed them to sit in. It might be one of the Marsalis brothers one night or Bono from U2 another C night. In the early ‘80s, Jaco Pastorius sat in for a legendary set. But it was also always O U a delight to hear a young high school or college musician cutting his teeth and then R T see Freddy spending his break encouraging them. E S T Freddy grew up in Denver but, like many other hometown jazz musicians across Y America, did move away to ‘the big city’ early in his career to pursue more opportunity. O F In his case, he moved to Los Angeles and for a while had some success with the West A Coast jazz scene. Denver was lucky to have him back in town. Freddy was a jazz icon N D in Denver. No, he was never featured in DownBeat and he didn’t play the big jazz R E festivals, but his legacy will be just as important: one of the many hometown jazz W musicians who perform throughout America, jazz evangelists keeping this great art H U form alive and accessible to Americans everywhere.

  • Graded on a Curve: Patty Waters, Live September 17, 2019 by Joseph Neff
Graded on a Curve: Patty Waters, Live September 17, 2019 By Joseph Neff No discussion of the 1960s avant-garde is complete without touching upon the work of singer Patty Waters, as she predated such vocal iconoclasts as Yoko Ono and Linda Sharrock. Additionally, she was a prime influence on Patti Smith and perhaps most pertinently, Diamanda Galas. Live, her latest and first new release on vinyl since 1966, was captured in performance at the First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn on April 5, 2018 with the pianist from her debut Burton Greene, bassist Mario Pavone, and percussionist Barry Altschul. Dedicated to the great pianist Cecil Taylor on the day of his passing, its run of 1,000 LPs and 750 CDs is out September 20 via Blank Forms. “People ask me (about) my influences, I would have to say Patty Waters. They say other people and I say, nahh, Patty Waters, listen to Patty Waters. I listened to her twice. That’s all it took for some grain of inextricable influence” —Diamanda Galas Patty Waters’ two greatest albums, Sings from 1965 and College Tour from the following year, combine to secure her reputation as an avant vocal priestess of the first order. They were cut for the storied label ESP Disk, an enterprise known for its stable of fringe ’60s artifacts ranging from the proto out-rock of The Godz and Cromagnon, assorted strains of folk including The Fugs, Pearls Before Swine, The Holy Modal Rounders, Erica Pomerance, and Ed Askew, and most prominently, a ton of the era’s avant jazz; in fact, it was saxophonist Albert Ayler who introduced Waters to ESP’s owner-operator Bernard Stollman.

Listening, then, figures prominently in the imaginations of jazz musicians and aficionados. While jazz scholarship has acknowledged the discourse on listening within various jazz cultures, to date the actual listening practices of jazz musicians and listeners remain under-theorized. This dissertation investigates listening and aural experience in a New York City community devoted to avant-garde jazz. I situate this community within the local history of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, discuss the effects of changing neighborhood politics on music performance venues, and analyze social interactions in this scene, to give an exposition of “listening to music” as a practice deeply tied into other aspects of my interlocutors’ lives.

A CINEMA GUILD RELEASE A film by Jake Meginsky 91 MIN / 2018 / USA / in English Official Site: www.fullmantis.com Booking Contact: Press Contact: Gabriel Chicoine/George Myers Sylvia Savadjian [email protected] [email protected] SYNOPSIS MILFORD GRAVES FULL MANTIS is a portrait of renowned percussionist Milford Graves, exploring his kaleidoscopic creativity and relentless curiosity. Graves has performed internationally since 1964, both as a soloist and in ensembles with such legends as Albert Ayler, Giuseppi Logan and Sonny Sharrock. He is widely considered to be a founding pioneer of avant-garde jazz, and he remains one of the most influential living figures in the evolution of the form. The film draws the viewer through the artist’s lush garden and ornate home, into the martial arts dojo in his backyard and the laboratory in his basement - all of this just blocks from where he grew up in the housing projects for South Jamaica, Queens. Graves tells stories of discovery, struggle and survival, ruminates on the essence of 'swing,' activates electronic stethoscopes in his basement lab to process the sound of his heart, and travels to Japan where he performs at a school for children with autism, igniting the student body into an ecstatic display of spontaneous collective energy. Oscillating from present to past and weaving intimate glimpses of the artist’s complex cosmology with blistering performances from around the globe, MILFORD GRAVES FULL MANTIS is cinema full of fluidity, polyrhythm and intensity, embodying the essence of Graves’ music itself.
