UTC was hit hard out of the gate with senior quarterback Alejandro Bennifield and senior linebacker Dale Warren both sidelined with suspensions. Bennifield was out four games due to an NCAA academic issue, while Warren missed six games due to a violation of NCAA rules.

Sophomore transfer Nick Tiano started the first four games for the Mocs. Bennifield barely got back in the action when he suffered a season-ending injury against Western Carolina. Tiano was also lost for the rest of the season due to an injury against the Catamounts.

True freshman Cole Copeland took over for the last six games of the year, completing 130 of 207 attempts for seven touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The 130 completions are second-most among freshmen at UTC, while the seven TD passes are third.

Defensively, the Mocs transition to a 3-4 got better as the season progressed. UTC held Samford, Wofford and ETSU to season-lows in offensive output. The Mocs led the SoCon and finished No. 25 in the FCS in total defense, giving up just 326.4 yards per game.
