Section 5: Chosen by Canadians “consumer preference” is a possible factor in determining a car’s nationality 5.0 introduction

5.0T1 / section title Chosen by Canadians

Choix des Canadiens

5.0T2 / main text

Is the best-selling car in Canada by definition ‘Canadian’? Canada’s consumers state their preferences whenever they buy a car—their choices determining which cars will dominate Canadian roads.

Canadians also express their relationships with cars through images, and music. When a car reflects its owner’s personality, or becomes part of the culture, does that make it ‘Canadian’?

A car is one of the most expensive things that a Canadian will ever buy. Canadian consumers’ choices are influenced by many things including patriotism, practicality, and the preferences of other Canadians.

When a Canadian buys a car, any car, does their choice make that car ‘Canadian’? If the car becomes widely popular across Canada, is it somehow ‘more’ Canadian?

Henry Ford wanted to “build a car for the great multitude.” With the affordable, reliable Model T, he certainly succeeded! Ford pioneered assembly line mass production—key to the car’s low price. Once Canada’s best-selling car, the Model T made car 5.3A1 Model T Artifact no. 1967.0029 ownership a reality for many Canadian families.

Canadian-built Model Ts, produced from 1908 to 1927, were sold throughout the Commonwealth. By 1927, over 15 million Model Ts had been produced worldwide, making it the first true ‘world car.’

Canadians loved the Beetle for its reliability, simplicity and low gas consumption. They also liked its low price.

The Beetle was first sold in Canada in 1952. Its popularity grew 5.4A1 Volkswagon Beetle Artifact no. 1983.0425 as consumers looked for alternatives to North America’s large, gas-guzzling cars. By 1960, the Beetle was Canada’s third best- selling car. Disney’s 1968 movie The Love Bug further added to the car’s appeal. Nearly 5 million Beetles were sold in Canada. It was taken off the market in 1977.
