Drawing from ethnographic data, this project aims at exploring residents’ listening experiences of community radio, focusing on how they use community radio programmes, assessing to what extent these programmes represent a public (social, political or familial) resource for its audiences. In order to privilege depth over breadth, as it is the case with ethnographic work, the fieldwork was carried out in one community: Pau da Lima. The focus has been laid on the community rather than on the radio stations , and on the audiences rather than the producers. This was informed by the recognition that little attention has been devoted to the listening dimension of community radio. Thus, my research offers an important contribution to knowledge by bridging this research gap. In addition, this research brings in a methodological innovation to the study of community radio. Being able to capture the richness of everyday life, it aims at offering a nuanced analysis of the place of community radio in the favela. The thesis explores the private and public dimensions of community radio listening, observing its use as a resource in the homes but also on the streets. In the context of the favelas, community radio programming is widely aired through street loudspeakers, making an interesting case study of radio’s use in public spaces and challenging the well-accepted perspective of the medium as being essentially individual and domestic. The cacophony of the densely populated favela implies that one needs to attend closely to the conditions of reception and, specifically, how listening to radio in this context, needs to be understood as part of a continuous and complex spectrum of auditory culture. Hair is a derivative of the epidermis and consists of two distinct parts: the follicle and the hair shaft. The follicle is the essential unit for the generation of hair. The hair shaft consists of a cortex and cuticle cells, and a medulla for some types of hairs. Hair follicle has a continuous growth and rest sequence named hair cycle. The duration of growth and rest cycles is coordinated by many endocrine, vascular and neural stimuli and depends not only on localization of the hair but also on various factors, like age and nutritional habits. Distinctive anatomy and physiology of hair follicle are presented in this chapter. Trichobezoars (agglomerations of hair) occur most frequently in patients with mental disorders (tricho- tillomania) and represent a rare pathology that can entail diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. Material and method. We are reporting a gastric trichobezoar case in 12 years old female patient with no pathological personal history, admitted for epigastric pain and food vomiting. Clinical examination revealed an epigastric formation of approx. 5/3cm, rigid, immobile and adhering to the deep structure, while laboratory tests revealed a mild microcytic hypochromic anemia. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy provided visualization of a giant trichobezoar of approximately 17 cm, visible from the subcardial region down to the antral region, hooked by one hair onto an area with a pseudopolypoid inflammatory aspect located in the prepyloric region.

These hairs lack pigment at the very end and do not have a root sheath around the ends either. Telogen hairs are known as "club hairs." I always encourage my patients to bring in hairs they shed if they are worried about the type of hair they are seeing. 99.9 % of the time the hairs they see are telogen hairs. About 30-70 telogen hairs are released from the scalp each day.     new formations NUMBER 3 WINTER 1987 Kobena Mercer BLACK HAIR/STYLE POLITICS Some time ago Michael Jackson's hair caught fire when he was filming a television commercial. Perhaps the incident became newsworthy because it brought together two seemingly opposed news-values: fame and misfortune. But judging by the way it was reported in one black community newspaper, The Black Voice, Michael's unhappy accident took on a deeper significance for a cultural politics of beauty, style and fashion. In its feature article, 'Are we proud to be black?', beauty pageants, skin-bleaching cosmetics and the curly-perm hair-style epitomized by Jackson's image were interpreted as equivalent signs of a 'negative' black aesthetic. All three were roundly condemned for negating the 'natural' beauty of blackness and were seen as identical expressions of subjective enslavement to Eurocentric definitions of beauty, thus indicative of an 'inferiority complex'.1 The question of how ideologies of 'the beautiful' have been defined by, for and - for most of the time - against black people remains crucially important. But at the same time I want to take issue with the widespread argument that, because it involves straightening, the curly-perm hair-style represents either a wretched imitation of white people's hair or, what amounts to the same thing, a diseased state of black consciousness. I have a feeling that the equation between the curly-perm and skin-bleaching cremes is made to emphasize the potential health risk sometimes associated with the chemical contents of hair-straightening products. By exaggerating this marginal risk, a moral grounding is constructed for judgements which are then extrapolated to assumptions about mental health or illness.
