(Received 07 July 2003; revised version accepted 20 May 2004) ABSTRACT Feng, Li, Shen & Wang 2004. A note on the geographic and stratigraphic distribution of Jllrinodendron in China. Palaeobotanist53 (1-3): 17-20. Cyclosligma. Haughton ex. Heer 1871, which is a homonym of modern botany, should be abandoned. Doweld proposed Jurinodendron Doweld to replace it. This paper shows the geographic and stratigraphic distribution of Jurinodendron in P.R. China, which adds to the current knowledge of the distribution of Jllrinodendron Doweld and its significance as acosmopolitan taxon. In accordance with the rules of the International Code of Botanical URING the study of nomenclature of fossil plants, the Nomenclature (ICBN), Doweld proposed a new generic name, DRussian palaeobotanist Doweld (200 I) found that the lurinodendron, to replace the palaeobotanical application of generic name Cyclostigma, for the widely spread Cyclostigma. He futher summed up the geographic and Lepidodendron-like fossil remains of the late Devonian, was a stratigraphic distribution ofall the known species of this genus. homonym of several modern plant taxa Cyclostigma However, there was no reference quote from Chinese material Hochstetter ex Endlicher, 1842 (Apocynaceae Juss.), in Doweld's publication of the cosmopolitan lurinodendron Cyclostigma Klotzsch, 1853 (Euphorbiaceae Juss.), and Doweld, 200 I. © Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany, India 18 THE PALAEOBOTANIST The genus Cyclostigma was first used by Haughton (1860 a, b, c) to describe certain Lepidodendron-like fossil plants ~~ l' rrr "'--'r --.-t~ + _J" from Kiltorcan Hill, County Kilkenny and elsewhere in the ' ---....-~ ---J. , ~ Upper Old Sandstone of Ireland. Tchirkova-Zalessky (1957, to see Cai & Wu, palaeogeographic distribution of Jurinodendron, we present 1994) considered Cyclostigma as a subgenus of here the geographic and stratigraphic distribution of the genus Bothrodendron, thus used the notation "Bothrodendron in China (Figs 1& 2). The late Chinese palaeobotanist Sze (1952, 1953) pointed out that Cyclostigma possess a Iigular pit, whilst Bothrodendron is without a ligular pit, hence these two genera Acknowledgements-We lhank Dr Qin Han (Thomas C.
