July 30, 2020 – Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor “Lammermoor lass goes mad, stabs fiancée to death” is the headline that might have appeared in The Scotsman following the premiere of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, which is featured on this week’s Thursday Night Opera House. Loosely based on Sir Walter Scott’s historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor, the opera benefitted greatly from a European interest in the history and culture of Scotland: the perceived romance of its violent wars and feuds, as well as its folklore and mythology, intrigued nineteenth-century readers and audiences. Lucia premiered on September 26, 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. It has always been the best-known of Donizetti's tragic operas and has never fallen out of the standard repertory. In seventeenth-century Scotland, Lucia (soprano Andrea Rost) loves Edgardo (tenor Bruce Ford), the dispossessed master of Ravenswood and an enemy of her family. The couple exchange rings and vows before Edgardo leaves the country on a mission, and Lucia’s brother Enrico (baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore), learning of this, is outraged. He wants his sister to make a politically advantageous marriage to Lord Arturo Bucklaw (tenor Paul Charles Clark) and shows her a forged letter supposedly written by Edgardo that “proves” his infidelity. In the light of this and persuaded by the chaplain Raimondo (bass Alastair Miles), Lucia reluctantly agrees to the marriage. Months later Edgardo returns, interrupts the wedding celebration, curses Lucia and flings her ring at her, provoking Enrico to challenge him to a duel in the Ravenswood cemetery. -

Clockwise from top left: Ben Edquist, 2014; Lauren Michelle, 2015; Doug Carpenter, 2013. 2016 LOTTE LENYA COMPETITION FINALS Daytime Round Kilbourn Hall, Eastman School of Music Saturday, 16 April 2016, 11:00 am About the Lotte Lenya Competition In 1998, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Lotte Lenya (1898-1981), an extraordinary singer/actress and one of the foremost interpreters of the music of her husband, Kurt Weill, the Board of Trustees of the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music approved President Kim Kowalke’s proposal to establish an annual Lotte Lenya Competition. The Lotte Lenya Competition recognizes talented young singer/actors ages 19-32 who are dramatically and musically convincing in wide-ranging modes of theater repertoire, from opera/operetta to contemporary Broadway musicals, with a focus on the works of Kurt Weill. More than a vocal competition, the Lenya Competition emphasizes idiomatic performance and the acting of songs within a dramatic context. Competition guidelines for 2016 require each contestant to prepare four selections: one theatrical selection by Kurt Weill; two songs from the American musical theater repertoire (one from the pre-1968 “Golden Age” and one from 1968 or later); and one aria from the operatic or operetta repertoire. The Weill selections and the opera/ operetta aria must be sung in their original theatrical versions and languages (with the exception of authorized English translations of The Threepenny Opera and Happy End). For the preliminary round, 224 contestants from eleven countries auditioned by submitting a video of their four repertoire selections. In mid-March, thirty-one semi- finalists then auditioned live in New York for adjudicator/coaches Jeanine Tesori and Victoria Clark. -

DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982. -
