After 3 seminal albums The Saints split whilst in the UK in 1978. While Chris Bailey carried on using The Saints’ banner as his own, Kuepper returned to Australia to form an even more progressive group, Laughing Clowns. It was the Clowns, alongside The Birthday Party and The Go-Betweens that helped throw off Australia’s cultural cringe in the ‘80s. They were original, a collision of guitar and brass that amazed and challenged audiences around the world. The Clowns’ legacy may be forgotten by most, but Hot Records now rectifies this with the release of Cruel, But Fair, a beautifully packaged 3-CD Set containing every Laughing Clowns recording with track by track notes by Ed Kuepper. These albums sound as fresh and exciting today as when first released and remind us how powerful innovative & wildly experimental rock 'n' roll can be. After the demise of Laughing Clowns in 1985, Kuepper has gone on to enjoy a fruitful solo career, but more on that in a month or two ...     Life in a Padded Cell: A Biography of Tony Cohen, Australian Sound Engineer by Dale Blair ©copyright ~ One ~ Satan has possessed your Soul! ‘Tony is very devout in “God’s Lesson”. I cannot speak highly enough of Tony’s manners and behaviour. They are beyond reproach’. It was the sort of report card every parent liked to see. It was 1964. The Beatles were big and Tony Cohen was a Grade One student at St. Francis de Sales primary school, East Ringwood. The following year he took his first communion. The Beatles were still big and there seemed little to fear for the parents of this conscientious and attentive eight-year-old boy. The sisters who taught him at that early age would doubtless have been shocked at the life he would come to lead – a life that could hardly be described as devout. Tony Cohen was born on 4 June 1957 in the maternity ward of the Jessie MacPherson hospital in Melbourne. Now a place specializing in the treatment of cancer patients it was a general hospital then. He was christened Anthony Lawrence Cohen. His parents Philip and Margaret Cohen had been living in James Street, Windsor, but had moved to the outer eastern suburb of East Ringwood prior to the birth of their son. Philip Cohen was the son of Jewish immigrants who had left Manchester, England, and settled in Prahran, one of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. Philip’s father had served in the First World War, survived and then migrated to Australia with his wife and infant son (Tony’s Uncle David).

A founding member of seminal punk band The Saints, frontman of the jazz-inflected, post-punk outfit Laughing Clowns and a prolific solo artist in his own right, Kuepper’s influential 40-year career has seen his rise from a ground-breaking young punk to a revered musical legend. Performing live with a string section for the very first time, Kuepper completely rearranges a diverse array of songs, ranging his entire catalogue, from The Saints and Laughing Clowns, to his recent solo work. The interplay between the strings and unexpected electronic elements blur the line between the acoustic and the electric, and breathes new life into familiar classics. “On my last solo tour I started to consciously move away from the idea of any set arrangements on my songs, meaning they are played differently every time I play them.
