Greeting you with Love and blessings from God. How was your week? I hope things are going well with you and your family. Can you believe that we are already at the end of August? Many of you will be planning for the Labor Day weekend soon. Where can we go? That’s the question. So far, we are so blessed with the weather, and knock on wood, we haven’t had to deal with any serious hurricanes yet. So far this year, it seems to be that Mother Nature has changed her course of direction to hit the East coast in places like Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Philadelphia, New York, etc. Besides flooding, many residents have been damaged by fallen trees and loss of power. Hopefully things will get better for them and they will get back to normal soon. It is so hard to deal with natural disasters while still dealing with the corona virus and all of its many guidelines. How can you evacuate people and put them all in the same building with masks, constant sanitizing and social distancing? In the meantime, the kids, teachers, and staff are all going back to school again, and have to face these same rules, regulations and guidelines. How can they avoid this contagious virus? We are all living in a challenging situation right now and I’m not talking about just in America, but all over the world. Let’s pray that God will help us to find a solution soon so that we can go back to the way it used to be, or close to it. Back to our parish business, CCD registration has begun, and is still going on this Sunday. Just a reminder, if you have children or grandchildren who want to attend this program, they need to register. And yes, we have to abide by all of the guidelines for COVID19. We are in need of a few new teachers. If you are interested in helping us in this ministry, please let us know, or contact Ms. NormaJean Medina at 6007877. All High School students who are planning to make Confirmation in 2021 must also register. If you are entering the 9th grade, now is the time to register for CCD so that you can receive the Sacrament in the 11th grade. The sooner you register, the better, so that we can be prepared for you with the proper study materials. And as you may know, dealing with things going on today, the Post Office deliveries are coming later than normal. So, the sooner we know who is attending, the better. The second thing is, I want to apologize to all of you who came to Mass last weekend. Even though the air conditioning was on, I am sure that a few of you may have felt that it was a little warmer than usual. The reason was because on Friday afternoon, one of the fan motors burned out and we could not get it repaired until this week. Cisco tried the best they could, but they could only promise to have it some time this week. I didn’t tell anyone about it for fear that, psychologically, if I let you know ahead of time with the mask covering your face, the social distancing, and sanitizing, your blood would be boiling and your body temperature would hit the ceiling; or some of you may have walked out before Mass even began. I snuck in and went up to the choir loft and looked down to see many of you fanning yourselves. Thank God Fr. Heffner didn’t know about it, and did well with the help of the deacon, who also did not know, and no one got sick and the Mass went on beautifully without any problems. Praise the Lord! So you see, being a Pastor is not easy. Dealing with an old building, there is always something to be upgraded. To make sure about this problem we went back to check on this particular unit, and the last time that the fan motor broke was in August, 2010, ten years ago. Well, as Harry Connick, Jr. sings, “Nothing lasts forever, so I better fix you as soon as possible, for now.” On a personal note, thanks so much to many of you who remembered my birthday on August 14th, the day before the Assumption of Mary. Thanks for all of the cards, gifts and birthday wishes, it is much more than I deserve. From now on, I will not reveal my age anymore. For your information, please use your imagination, it’s somewhere around 65+. I even applied for my full coverage of Social Security. I had mixed feelings of conflict between happiness, sadness, growing older with a lot of wisdom, but on the other hand, I wish I could turn back the clock again, when I was still young, innocent, healthy and life was full of beautiful dreams. Unfortunately, not all of my dreams come true, but hey that’s life, you win some, you lose some. No one has everything, including me. I am happy with what and where I am right now, thank God! Guess what, coincidentally, I was born on the feast day of St. a priest and a martyr. I didn’t know too much about him until I went to . It was a very interesting story about St. Maximilian Kolbe and his life and how he died. On July 29, 1941, after an escape from Auschwitz of a Polish prisoner Zygmunt Pilawski SS authorities selected 10 prisoners for starvation death. One of them, Franciszek Gajowniczek, begged for mercy. Father Maximilian Kolbe sacrificed his life asking SS men to take him instead. After Polish prisoner Zygmunt Pilawski fled Auschwitz, Nazi SS guards grabbed 10 other prisoners to die for the man’s escape. Father Kolbe heard one of the men chosen, Franciszek Gajowniczek, lamenting this fate, mourning the lost life with his wife and children. Moved by the prisoner’s grief, Father Kolbe asked for Gajowniczek’s life to be spared, telling the guards to take him instead.“I am a Catholic priest,” he said. “Let me take his place. I am old. He has a wife and children.”Franciscan Father Kolbe pointed to the prisoner and repeated, “I am a Catholic priest from Poland.I would like to take his place, because he has a wife and children.” After 15 days of starvation, he was very weak and could not be led out for execution, so instead they decided that he would be killed by lethal injection. During my pilgrimage to Poland, I had a chance to visit his Order and concentration camp. I said Mass at the very chapel where he used to say Mass and I also went to visit his room. Boy, what a simple life, just a bed, a writing table and a basin to wash. I also went to the Auschwitz concentration camp, and went to the chamber/room where he was executed by lethal injection. I don’t ever think I can be a Monk and do what he did. Maybe God wanted to use him as an inspiration for me to follow in the Priesthood ministry. Well, that’s all for this week. Be happy, be healthy, be nice, be cheerful and be kind to one another. And last, but not least, pray to Our Lady of Prompt Succor for a safe hurricane season and a pray for a cure to this pandemic. Fr.
