Promoting Positive Efforts To Support Local Businesses and Workers

Compliments to all who are helping us promote “National Small Business Weekend”, the First Friday, Saturday and Sunday of every month. This effort has been gaining momentum during the last year as local community businesses work together to promote the idea of shopping local and supporting American workers. Our local economy in today’s world relies heavily on social and economic development and small businesses are the reason for these efforts.

In December, Philadelphia Councilman Mark Squilla presented a resolution in City Council, "Philadelphia Supports National Small Business Weekend." The resolution passed unanimously. In January, Pennsylvania Senator Mike Stack and State Representative Mark Cohen introduced a resolution, "Pennsylvania Supports National Small Business Weekend," which encourages consumers to shop locally and support American made products. Representative Cohen said, “Buying from small businesses creates local jobs and builds communities”. Senator Stack’s resolution noted that small businesses employ more than 60 million Americans and that “small businesses are the back bone of the Pennsylvania economy”. The state senate resolution also passed unanimously. On Monday, February 3, 2014, Representative Cohen and several Councilman Mark Squilla Representative John Taylor others braved a snowstorm to attend a news conference and business get together at the Liberty Bell Diner, 8445 Frankford Ave. in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia. A similar news conference was held at 2 P.M. that day at the Aramingo Diner, 3356 Aramingo Avenue in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia. The events were organized by Michael Blichasz, who leads the “National Small Business Weekend” effort. Among those in attendance at the Liberty Bell Diner event and pictured above are: Jackson Taylor, FIRSTRUST Bank, Theresa Romanowski, Polish American News, Rick Muraresku, Sales manager for MACCO, Halil Ceylan, Liberty Bell Diner, Stephen Smolczynski, TriState Media Network, Michael Blichasz, American Workers Radio, PA State Representative Mark Cohen, Mia Hylan, executive director of the Mayfair Community Development Corporation, and Lisa Greco, owner of Bella Lisa Hair Studio and treasurer of the Mayfair Business Association. Representative Mark Cohen Senator Michael Stack In addition to other special guests were Tom Waring, editor of the Northeast Times. Thanks also to PA State Representative John Pennsylvania State Senator Michael Stack, PA State Representative Mark Taylor and Senator Michael Stack who are ongoing supporters of the Cohen, Representative John Taylor and Philadelphia City Councilman American workers campaign and our efforts to promote “National Mark Squilla, members of city council and elected offi cials in Harrisburg are important to our efforts to promote local businesses, create more jobs and Small Business Weekend”. improve America’s economy.
