The Formation of Temporary Communities in Anime Fandom: a Story of Bottom-Up Globalization ______
THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States. -

Kazakhstan Continues Steps to Ease Visa Regime June 16. Paris – The delegation from Kazakhstan took part in the 159th General Assembly of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris. Akhmetzhan Yessimov, Chairman of the Board of National Company “Astana EXPO-2017”, and Rapil Zhoshybayev, Commissioner for EXPO-2017, delivered a report on the progress of preparations for the event. "To create favorable conditions for foreign tourists, last year Kazakhstan abolished the visa regime with 20 developed countries. This was done unilaterally. Starting from January 1, 2017, countries with visa- free access will include the OECD members, Malaysia, Monaco, the UAE and Singapore," said Mr. Zhoshybayev in his Paris report. "We also signed an ADS agreement, which will enable Chinese tourists to travel to Kazakhstan in guided groups. The agreement makes it easier for tourist groups from China to obtain visas: applicants will not be required to attend an interview. Starting from July 1, 2016, the first tourist groups from China are expected to arrive," said the Commissioner for EXPO-2017. In his turn, Akhmetzhan Yessimov, Chairman of the Board of National Company Astana EXPO-2017, reported that "the construction of facilities for EXPO-2017 is going according to schedule." "Over 10 thousand people are engaged in the process and 500 units of equipment are being used. The current construction rate allows the completion of works by November 2016. The official participants in the exhibition have already started sending in their themed concepts for decoration of the pavilions," he said. Together with state authorities, the organizers of EXPO-2017 are working hard to ensure that tourists have a comfortable experience during their visit to the exhibition and their stay in Astana. -

What Remains History and Locations of World Fairs
WHAT REMAINS HISTORY AND LOCATIONS OF WORLD FAIRS This is a chronological list of exhibitions and fairs held throughout the world that gained international attention. A few regional fairs are included if they were significant to the author or for showcasing emerging technology. This list is a compilation from various sources, trying to respect the capitalization traditions from the countries of origin. When controversy arises about the date or name of a fair (should the 1849 fair held in Birmingham, United Kingdom be referred to as “Exhibition of Industrial Arts and Manufacturers” or “Exposition of British Society”) a choice has been made so the checklist remains an index of fairs. Brown text indicates that the fair occurred before the Bureau international des expositions (BIE) on November 22, 1928 or was not sanctioned by them. Purple text also shows the fair was not sanctioned, but indicates there is a link to additional information researched by the author. Black text indicates a BIE sanctioned fair. Blue text indicates a link to additional information about a sanctioned fair. 1790's 1791 Prague, Bohemia; First Industrial Exhibition 1798 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française 1800's 1801 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française (Second Exposition) 1802 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française (Third Exposition) 1806 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française (Fourth Exposition) 1810's 1819 Paris, -
