Official Groundhog Prediction 2021 Groundhog Day 2021 Essex Ed Prognostication Even I couldn’t predict, what 2020 would bring I mean, I just predict weather, secretly hoping for spring At first quarantine was like hibernation, months at a time… all alone Though when months turned to new seasons, I was way out of my zone! So, I started new hobbies, tried out new cuisine, Took online classes, learned yoga… I cleaned and I cleaned. Now Groundhog Day is MY day, to be the center of the room. But to stay socially distant, this year, I’m trying out zoom! No shadow, no shadow, no sun in the sky Winter is over, we bid you goodbye. So, dust off your jeans, put those sweat pants away Expect Spring to be early, and for it all to be okay. Still mask, social distance, and wash your hands too But I predict a year of great memories, for me and for you There is still a football game to be played, so here’s the prediction, Florida will bring a lucky seven for Brady is my intuition. Essex Ed has been predicting the mid-winter forecast since 1997 and the Zoo had various other Groundhogs predict before him. Essex Ed was mentored under the esteemed Punxsutawney Phil, but his predications are his own. NJ weather is not always in line with PA’s after all, and Ed could easily see his shadow while Phil does not or vice versa. In the mid-2000’s, Essex Ed started adding super bowl predictions to his prognostication. He’s much better at prediction the weather than football, but in his defense, he hibernates through most of the sport’s season. Prognosticating hibernators like Essex Ed, Punxsutawney Phil, Staten Island Chuck, and many others are in touch with the Earth and there is something on which they all agree. Human animals, enjoying all the Earth’s greatness, need to help take care of this wondrous planet. Be kind, responsible and respectful. Protect all living things and the Earth’s natural resources. .

Problem of the Week Archive Punxsutawney Phil – February 6, 2017 Problems & Solutions February 2nd is Groundhog Day. Every year, on this day, Punxsutawney Phil comes out to predict either another 6 weeks of winter or an early spring. If he sees his shadow, that is a prediction of more winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, that is a prediction of an early spring. This past Groundhog Day, Phil came out, he stood up straight and saw a shadow 3 feet 3 inches long. If his handler, who was standing right beside him, had a shadow of 9 feet and is 6 feet tall, how many inches tall is Phil? The ratio of the handler’s height to is shadow is 6/9 = 2/3. One-third of the length of Phil’s shadow would be 1 foot 1 inch. So, two-thirds would be 2 feet 2 inches. This means Phil is 2 feet 2 inches tall or 26 inches. Punxsutawney Phil is claimed to be over 120 years old. His handlers say he gets his longevity from a magic elixir Phil drinks daily. In his recorded history, Phil has predicted 102 long winters and 18 early springs. However, only 40% of Phil’s predictions have been correct. Assuming he correctly predicts long winters and early springs with the same accuracy. Of the 120 years Phil made a prediction, what percentage of the years were long winters and what percent were early springs? Round your answers to the nearest whole number. If Phil is 40% correct on all predictions, then of the 102 long winters he predicted 0.4 × 102 = 40.8 ≈ 41 were long winters and 102 – 41 = 61 were early springs.

  • Groundhog Day 2020: for the First Time in History, Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Second Consecutive Early Spring
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 2, 2020 Groundhog Day 2020: For the First Time in History, Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Second Consecutive Early Spring Punxsutawney, PA – This morning, Pennsylvania’s own world-famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil once again predicted an early spring after he did not see his shadow, a prediction so rare that it has only happened 20 times in the 134-year history of Groundhog Day and never two years in a row. Residents of Punxsutawney and visitors from across the nation gathered to see Phil make his highly-anticipated weather prognostication, during Pennsylvania’s unique Groundhog Day celebration. “Groundhog Day is a beloved Pennsylvania tradition that has been embraced wholeheartedly by communities across the country,” said Gov. Tom Wolf. “We are honored Phil has called our commonwealth his home for more than 100 years and look forward to continuing to share his prediction with visitors, residents, and the millions watching from their homes.” The event now attracts up to 30,000 visitors to Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, located about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter weather 104 times while forecasting an early spring 20 times. The story of the holiday tradition declares that if the groundhog emerges early on the morning of February 2 and sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter weather. Should he not see his shadow, we will have an early spring. The annual event began in 1886, when a spirited group of groundhog hunters dubbed themselves "The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club” and proclaimed Punxsutawney Phil to be the one and only weather prognosticating groundhog.

Schedule of Events & Travel Guide 134th Anniversary 02-02- 2020 www.groundhog.org The Schedule and Travel Guide was funded in part by the Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau as a Jefferson County Hotel Tax Project. The Legend of Groundhog Day Groundhog Day was founded from the traditions of the Romans, who carried the myth to the Germans during the Roman invasions many centuries ago. The story was also based on this Scottish couplet: If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, There’ll be two winters in the year. Candlemas Day is celebrated each year on February 2nd. It was determined that if any animal came out from its underground hibernation on that day, and the sun was out, there would be six more weeks of winter. Thus, was born the tradition of the “two winters” or the “second winter.” What began as a tale from ancient times became fact in the early 1880’s. A group of residents in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, decided to celebrate Candlemas Day by going to the woods in search of a groundhog. In 1886, the editor of the local newspaper named the group the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The Club deemed a certain hilltop near the town as “Gobbler’s Knob” proclaiming that, from this knob, Punxsutawney Phil could accurately forecast the weather. On February 2nd, 1887, the first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob was made and Punxsutawney Phil delivered his first official weather forecast. The Punxsutawney groundhog, known as Phil rose to fame throughout the world. Known as the “Seer of Seers”, Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast on February 2nd is recorded in the Congressional Records held in the National Archives and the Library of Congress in our nation’s capital.

History of Groundhog Day Groundhog Day originates from an ancient celebration of the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox—the day right in the middle of astronomical winter. According to superstition, sunny skies that day signify a stormy and cold second half of winter while cloudy skies indicate the arrival of warm weather. The trail of Phil’s history leads back to Clymer H. Freas, city editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. Inspired by a group of local groundhog hunters—whom he would dub the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club— Freas declared Phil as America’s ocial forecasting groundhog in 1887. As he continued to embellish the groundhog's story year after year, other newspapers picked it up, and soon everyone looked to Punxsutawney Phil for the prediction of when spring would return to the country.

Folklore says that if the sun is shining when the ground hog comes out of his burrow, then the groundhog will go back into its burrow and we will have winter for six more weeks. However, if it is cloudy, then spring will come early that year. This is a tradition in the United States. There are a number of celebrations throughout the United States. The largest celebration takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil has predicted the weather each year since 1886. Large crowds of well over 10,000 people gather here to see Phil come out of his burrow at around 7:30am. The origins of Groundhog Day can be traced to German settlers in Pennsylvania. These settlers celebrated February 2nd as Candlemas Day. On this day if the sun came out then there would be six more weeks of wintry weather. At some point people began to look to the groundhog to make this prediction. The earliest reference to the groundhog is in an 1841 journal entry. In 1886 the Punxsutawney newspaper declared February 2nd as Groundhog Day and named the local groundhog as Punxsutawney Phil.

  • Well-Grounded
Well-Grounded The Story of Groundhog Day Why celebrate a rodent? There are religious holidays of all types, national holidays that honor heroes and events, and even silly holidays like National Candy Corn Day that we celebrate “just for fun.” But a day devoted to a chubby rodent that spends a lot of time underground? Now that’s a holiday worth discussing. Like many unusual holidays, this one goes back centuries. Early European Christians celebrated the Feast of the Presentation, honoring the day when Mary and Joseph first brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, 40 days after his birth on Christmas Day. Later, this became the day when priests blessed the candles—candle mass—used in this celebration. Candlemas Day, February 2, merged with other pre-Christian celebrations, marking the first possible day when hibernating animals might awaken and the end of winter was in sight. Candlemas Day and the Hedgehog Ancient wisdom from the United Kingdom maintains that if there is nice weather on Candlemas Day, harsh winter weather will follow: If Candlemas Day is clear and bright, Winter will have another bite. If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, Winter is gone and will not come again. The Romans brought the Candlemas Day weather superstition north to the Germanic peoples they encountered during their conquest of northern Europe. The Germans incorporated it into their own folklore. They concluded that if the hedgehog, a common hibernating animal in their area, awoke to sunshine on Candlemas Day, he would cast a shadow and thus predict continued winter weather.
