eine fahrt vom norden in den sueden - den mississippi entlang. der roadtrip ‚from the loop to the big easy’ folgt nicht den momentanen architektur-trends, sondern eroeffnet die gelegenheit, unter die oberflaeche der tradition der ‚moderne’ und ihrer sozio-kulturellen basis zu schauen. zwischen chicago, dem prototyp der amerikanischen stadt, und new orleans, das immer noch von den folgen des fatalen wirbelsturms ‚katrina’ gezeichnet ist, gibt es eine ganze fuelle herausragender architekturbeispiele und stadtplanungen aus dem 20. jahrhundert zu entdecken. und nicht zu vergessen die musik – blues & jazz! die reise ist zudem, im sinne einer sg. ‚feldforschung’, an das weitergreifende forschungs-projekt ‚form und funktion – nordamerikanische bau- und stadtbautypologien des 20. jahrhunderts’ an der fakultaet fuer architektur gekoppelt. im zuge des projekts werden die entwicklungslinien von speziellen bautypologien der amerikanischen bautradition, die einer strengen zweckma- essigkeit und wirtschaftlichkeit folgten, und ihre auswirkungen auf deutsche bauwerke unter- sucht. die anhaltende faszination des ‚modernismus’ zeigt, dass es um typologien geht, die auch ein architekt / staedtebauer des 21. jahrhunderts kennen sollte, weil ein starkes schoepferisches potential fuer die architektonische gestaltfindung in diesen erkenntnissen steckt. erkenntnisse, die trotz ihrer pragmatischen stringenz und zuweilen fast banalen direktheit doch den drei zen- tralen strategien 1. der ‚unverwechselbare ort’, der den sensiblen umgang mit der umwelt und die durchdringung von innen und aussen zeigt. 2. die ‚strukturelle klarheit’, sie steht für langfristigkeit, vorausschau und nutzungs neutralität; 3. die ‚materialsinnlichkeit’, die sich aus der authentischen form, dem gebrauchs wert und dem spiel des lichts auf der oberfläche generiert im zusammenspiel von raum, licht und oberflaeche der baulichen umsetzung zu grunde liegen und so den notwendigen mehrwert in der architektonischen wirkung erzeugen. der vorliegende ‚reader’ ist somit teil 1 der geplanten dokumentation -
