Messages of American Popular Song to Women During World War II
“I’m Doin’ It for Defense”: Messages of American Popular Song to Women during World War II A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2013 by Amy Brooks BM, Bob Jones University, 2008 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD Abstract World War II presented many new opportunities for American women. In this time of need, they were called upon to take an active part in the war effort, whether by means of working in a factory, growing a victory garden, or serving as a volunteer for wartime organizations. Women made great strides forward in areas such as the workforce and the military. The American popular song industry promoted these new roles for women. I have compiled over 150 songs from 1940 to1945 that relate to women’s roles during the World War II era. Of these songs, I have chosen a select number of songs that best demonstrate popular culture’s attitudes and actions towards women during the war. These songs can be divided into five categories: women in the military, women in the workforce, women’s war effort, women’s responsibilities to men in uniform, and women in the immediate post-war period. I have studied the representative songs by considering their lyrics to identify the objectives supported by the popular song industry. I took into consideration the venues in which they were presented and how these performances influenced their reception. -

╬ Liturgy of the Word ╬ Nativity Catholic Church First Reading 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a Celebration of the Eucharist One day Elisha came to Shunem, where there was a woman of influence, who 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time urged him to dine with her. Afterward, whenever he passed by, he used to stop there to dine. So she said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of June 28, 2020 5:30 pm God. Sunday Next Before Lent Before the Service
Church at Home Sunday Next Before Lent Before the Service Welcome to Church at Home this Sunday, as we celebrate and affirm together our belovedness in Christ. We are delighted that the Revd Dr Laura Biron-Scott is preaching for us this morning and Bishop Steven Croft is presiding, as they join together with contributors from across the Diocese of Oxford who have worked to bring this act of worship to fruition. As we mark Racial Justice Sunday, on this Valentine’s Day, we are reminded that each and every person is made in the image of the God of love, who calls us to show his love to others in all our words, actions and relationships. We acknowledge that we still have much to do to ensure that all God’s children know their belovedness and are affirmed in their unique personhood, gifts and calling. We especially wish to reaffirm our commitment to stand with our siblings in Christ who experience the sin of racism, and confirm our dedication to working together to end this grave injustice. Throughout the pandemic, people across the globe have shown the love of God to one another in myriad ways: through solidarity, ceaseless prayer and costly compassion, as well as through astonishing acts of practical service. All these must begin with the recognition that each and every person is infinitely precious in the sight of God; that we are all loved, and loveable, just as we are. And that we are each invited to experience the transforming love of God in our lives and communities, through relationship with Jesus Christ. -
Unveiled Hope
UNVEILED HOPE By Scotty Smith (This content is used with permission of Scotty Smith) UNVEILED HOPE INTRODUCTION: The Fulfillment of Our Great Hope As I write these words I am sitting at the foot of the Swiss Alps in the little fishing village of Iseltwald, just outside of Interlaken. All of my God given senses are engaged and heightened with an exhilarating intensity. Never have I seen bluer skies with a richness of hue that betrays description. I can feel the fiery warmth of the fall colors in the trees along the ridge of the Alps. And, I can taste the pure vanilla of the fresh white morning snow. Is there something that can be called too beautiful? Am I close to sensory overload? Before me is Lake Brienz whose blue-green waters seem so vast, so inviting, so absolutely calming. No tempest, just a tapestry of peacefulness that resonates with something deep in the core of my soul. It is so good to be here, right now, drinking in this astonishing vision..... for it has been a hard year, really, a hard season of life. So many changes, so many demands ..... I don't know when spiritual warfare has seemed as intense. Good friends are overwhelmed. Family members are facing loss and the adjustments forced with the advancing years. Maybe that's why this setting is just drawing me in. I feel like I am inhaling something much more vital than oxygen. The quiet of this place is so pronounced, so obvious, so centering. All I can hear is the rolling movement of a passenger train on the other side of the lake making its way to the wood carving village of Brienz. -

Long ago the maids drew water Ask what you will and it shall be done; In the evening time, they say Trust and obey, believe Him and say: One day Isaac sent his servant I believe, I believe God. To stop Rebekah on her way "My master sent me here to tell thee; And if you want salvation now See these jewels rich and rare; And the Holy Ghost and power, Would'st thou not his lovely bride be Just trust and obey, In that country over there?" Believe Him and say: I believe, I believe God. CHORUS It shall be light in the evening time, 2 The path to glory you will surely find; Reach Out, Touch The Lord Thru the water way, It is the light today, Key of F Buried in the precious Name of Jesus. Young and old, repent of all your sin, Reach out and touch the Lord The Holy Ghost will surely enter in; As He goes by, The evening Light has come, You'll find He's not too busy, It is a fact that God and Christ are one. To hear your heart's cry; He's passing by this moment, So, God's servants come to tell you Your needs to supply, Of a Bridegroom in the sky Reach out and touch the Lord Looking for a holy people As He goes by. To be his bride soon, by and by He sends to us refreshing water 3 In this wondrous latter day Feeling So Much Better They who really will be raptured Key of F Must go thru the water way Feeling so much better Are you on your way to ruin Talking about this good old Way, Cumbered with a load of care Feeling so much better See the quick work God is doing Talking about the Lord; That so his glory you may share Let's go on, let's go on At last the faith he once delivered Talking about this good old Way, To the saints, is ours today Let's go on, let's go on To get in the church triumphant Talking about the Lord. -
