  • The Newsroom's Toy Department: the Different Images of Sports Journalists in Films
The Newsroom’s Toy Department: The Different Images of Sports Journalists in Films By David Sobieraj The Newsroom’s Toy Department Sobieraj 2 ABSTRACT Sports are a major part of pop culture. Sports are not just games that athletes play; they are a way of life. The roles that sportswriters and broadcasters play in the movies are a microcosm of the roles they play in real life. Most movies that include sportswriters as characters portray them as a myriad of anonymous fictional journalists who act more like paparazzi than news reporters. These characters flash cameras and yell out questions to sports stars. When real-life journalists portray themselves in bit-part roles, they are sometimes portrayed as caricatures, mocking the role of sportscasting as well as themselves. In contrast, actors who portray real-life well-known journalists and actors who play fictional sports journalists in major roles in a film take on the role of sportscasters who believe their job is to inform the public about star athletes. Moreover, the manner in which women sportswriters are depicted in films reflects the manner in which they are viewed in the real world. In summary, the journalists that cover sports in movies portray the same roles that they take on in the real world. Some are just paparazzi, looking for the latest dirt on well-known athletes. Some don’t take themselves seriously and see their job as more entertainment than hard news. Finally, some do see their role as investigative journalists who bring to light important information on the star athletes that they cover.

RUTECKI has been approved for the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Scripps College of Communication by Joseph P. Bernt Professor of Journalism Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii Abstract RUTECKI, JARED W., M.S., June 2009, Journalism Enhancing the Agenda: A Content Analysis of Weekly Magazine Coverage of Performance-Enhancing Drug Use in Competitive Athletics, 1986-2006 (103 pp.) Director of Thesis: Joseph P. Bernt Athletes utilizing supplements to boost performance in sports have existed as long as athletic competition. Recently, media reports about this issue have increased after performance-enhancing drugs became part of the culture of baseball, the American pastime. Previous research has demonstrated the agenda setting effects of media coverage of steroids in sports. Weekly news magazines, such as Sports Illustrated, Newsweek and Time, are crucial media that set the public agenda for numerous topics, including athletics. The period between 1986 and 2006 saw performance-enhancing drug use develop from an unacknowledged phenomenon to a topic discussed around the water cooler at work. Through content analysis, this study associates the agenda setting effect of weekly news magazine coverage of the issue of performance-enhancing drugs in sports with the frames used to take this issue outside the locker room and into the public consciousness.

Honors Scholar Theses. 78. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/srhonors_theses/78 The Sweet Script: A Critical Analysis of American Sportswriting Jonny Schreiber Senior Honors Thesis Professor Hufstader May 1, 2009 Sportswriting often explores controversy to capitalize on the drama and give the author a forum for moral expression. Yet the genre itself exists at the center of debate. For some, “sportswriting by journalists in the United States is abysmally low,” rife with “the worst tendencies of academic writing – tortured syntax, cant diction, passive voice, grammatical conjunctivitis . hedging, indirection, obfuscation . a bedraggled stock of clichés” claims George Core in an issue of The American Scholar (Core 282). Numerous others share his opinion if not his passion that “there is little place in sportswriting for the academic mind” (Core 286). Despite the sports section “[accounting] for more than 20 percent of editorial content in metropolitan daily newspapers – more than any other category of news” (Anderson 355-356), its practitioners are accused as cheerleaders and hero-worshippers. They face “more lenient standards than reporters on other beats” (Anderson 356) since general fandom forgives their myriad of sins out of blithe ignorance (academics draw a clear line; PhDs over here, simpleton chest-painting-beer-swigging-hooligans over there) or fervor (fans want to read articles root, root, rooting for the home team).

  • Race on First, Class on Second, Gender on Third, and Sexuality up to Bat: Intersectionality and Power in Major League Baseball, 1995 - 2005
RACE ON FIRST, CLASS ON SECOND, GENDER ON THIRD, AND SEXUALITY UP TO BAT: INTERSECTIONALITY AND POWER IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, 1995 - 2005 Lisa Doris Alexander A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2006 Committee: Dr. Philip Terrie, Advisor Dr. Katherine A. Bradshaw Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Vikki Krane Dr. Nancy Spencer ii ABSTRACT Philip Terrie, Advisor Baseball, in one form or another, has existed in the United States for well over one hundred years, and during that time it has become an important part of the nation’s history and culture. Because of its long–standing presence, baseball has helped to create and maintain national sensibilities on a variety of topics, including race, class, gender, and sexuality through the use of symbolism and imagery. This study will utilize elements from Black Feminist Thought, Critical Race Theory (CRT), and Latina/o Critical Theory (LatCrit) to explore white privilege as well as the ways in which power relationships are structured by the axes of race, ethnicity, class, gender, nationality, and sexuality within Major League Baseball (MLB). Relying on textual analysis as well as Susan Birrell and Mary McDonald’s notion of reading sport critically, this dissertation analyzes the cultural meanings of four salient moments from the 1995 through the 2005 season to determine their cultural meanings which in turn will illustrate the persistence of racism, sexism, heterosexism, etc., in MLB and American culture overall. The four moments include the 1998 home–run chase between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, the focus on Mike Piazza’s and Kazuhiro Tadano’s sexual orientation, Alex Rodriguez’s contract worth approximately $25 million annually for ten years, and Barry Bonds’ record–breaking seasons from 2001 through 2005.

  • NARRATING TRAGEDY: from KENNEDY to KATRINA, from SPORTS to NATIONAL IDENTITIES Michael Helt Gavin, P
ABSTRACT Title of Document: NARRATING TRAGEDY: FROM KENNEDY TO KATRINA, FROM SPORTS TO NATIONAL IDENTITIES Michael Helt Gavin, Ph.D., 2007 Directed By: Nancy L. Struna, Chair, American Studies On September 11, 2001, Major League Baseball commissioner Allan ‘Bud’ Selig postponed the baseball season to offer proper respect to that day’s terror victims. On September 16, 2001, when the major league season resumed, sports columnists across the nation-state referred to the New York Yankees as ‘America’s team.’ When the Yankees made their run to the World Series, many columnists argued they ‘healed the wounds of the nation.’ Likewise, as water settled in the French Quarter after Hurricane Katrina, columnists suggested the New Orleans Saints were ‘capable of healing the nation’ and referred to them as ‘America’s team.’ When the Saints returned to the Superdome in 2006, many columnists suggested the region and nation were both healed. This dissertation uses discourse analysis to reveal the constructions of and contestations for dominant versions of national identity and memory in which sports columnists engaged in the context of tragedies like the John F. Kennedy assassination, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina. In examining sports columnists’ work over five decades, I offer a historical overview of sports columns and their relationship to dominant discourses of race and national identity. In the process, I contend that the voices comprising mainstream sports columnists through the 1960s generally constructed a mythological national identity that privileged whiteness. By the late 1990s, however, the voices comprising mainstream sports columnists included both those who constructed and confronted white hegemony.
