  • Walk This Way- Estratégias De Remodelagem Da Banda Aerosmith Direcionadas Ao Mainstream

SHORT SYNOPSIS A documentary about internationally renowned film editor Jill Bilcock, that charts how an outspoken arts student in 1960s Melbourne became one of the world’s most acclaimed film artists. SYNOPSIS Jill Bilcock: Dancing The Invisible focuses on the life and work of one of the world’s leading film artists, Academy award nominated film editor Jill Bilcock. Iconic Australian films Strictly Ballroom, Muriel’s Wedding, Moulin Rouge!, Red Dog, and The Dressmaker bear the unmistakable look and sensibility of Bilcock’s visual inventiveness, but it was her brave editing choices in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo+Juliet that changed the look of cinema the world over, inspiring one Hollywood critic to dub her editing style as that of a “Russian serial killer on crack”.

  • Making It in the Melbourne Music Scene Post-Punk and Post-Post-Punk
Making it in the Melbourne Music Scene Post-Punk and Post-Post-Punk Dr Sarah Taylor School of Science RMIT University Victoria, Australia [email protected] This paper uses contemporary documentation, interviews and maps to highlight the different types of music careers, and modes of “making it”, seen in the 1986 feature film Dogs in Space. The film concerns a fictional band of the same name, based on The Ears, a minor group active in the Melbourne band scene between 1979-1981. INXS’s Michael Hutchence plays Sam, the singer in post punk group Dogs in Space. The contrast between Hutchence and Sejavka was seen as remarkable: a major-league rock star, having “made it” by the time of the film’s production, portraying a relatively obscure post-punk musician. However, the trajectories of these bands did overlap in time and place. An historical geographical analysis of INXS and The Ears can help to add context to the Melbourne music scene depicted in the film, as well as to the later cult status popularity of the film, made during a transitional time between norms in the Australian music industry. Keywords — Music industry; post punk; Melbourne; INXS; The Ears; Dogs In Space; restructuring. INTRODUCTION I was far more interested in doing, instead of your rags-to-riches pop star story, your rags-to-gutter story... by actually showing the ones that don’t become famous. — Richard Lowenstein, director of Dogs in Space (quoted in Coupe, 1986) At the time of its release in late 1986, Dogs in Space provided a compelling contrast between the heights of music industry success enjoyed by one of its stars, Michel Hutchence, and the exciting but imploding music movement it depicted (Smith, 1986, McGregor, 1986, Coupe, 1986).

  • When Director Richard Lowenstein Opened the First Page of the Novel
DOGS IN SPACE SYNOPSIS Set against the backdrop of Melbourne‟s late 70s punk rock scene, Dogs in Space chronicles life in a chaotic, squalid share house. Hippies, addicts, students and radicals fill their days and nights with sex, drugs, parties and television. A series of chaotic vignettes are balanced with the central romance between Sam (Michael Hutchence), the lead singer of the band, Dogs in Space and his lover Anna (Saskia Post) as the house spirals out of control. Hutchence is a brilliant symbol of reckless youth in this, his first dramatic screen role, giving Dogs in Space instant cult status upon its original release in 1986. Shortly following its release, Dogs in Space achieved cult status, and received Official Selection for the Berlin, Edinburgh, London, and New York Film Festivals. It has since been described by Geoff Andrew of Time Out as an "uplifting and deliciously different movie,” and was also singled out for praise by Harlan Kennedy of Film Comment magazine as one of a number of films from the late 1980s which brought “shifting perspectives, structural experiment, and highly discomforting stories and characters” into the fold of Australian cinema. Unscreened for over twenty years, this classic film has been painstakingly restored from the original negative and remixed in 5.1 digital sound. PRODUCTION COMPANIES GHOST PICTURES PTY. LTD. • The Music Video: from Popular Music to Film and Digital Media
MUSC 499: The Music Video: From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media University of Southern California, Spring 2014 Wednesdays, 6:00pm-9pm THH 202 Instructor: Dr. Richard Brown [email protected] www.richardhbrownjr.com Course Description: Since its emergence in the late 1970s, the music video has become the dominant means of advertising popular music and musicians, as well as one of the most influential multimedia genres in history. Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more. Course Materials: There is one required textbook available for free via USC’s electronic Ebook access: Carol Vernallis’ Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context (New York: Columbia University Press, 2004).
