SF Giants Press Clips Wednesday, March 7, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Tim Lincecum joins Rangers with new contract, heavy heart John Shea SURPRISE, Ariz. — For the first time in his big-league career, Tim Lincecum will wear a number other than 55. He’ll wear 44. “In honor of my brother,” Lincecum said Tuesday after working out at the Texas Rangers’ training facility. “That was his number. Either 12 or 44. Twelve was taken. So it’s 44.” Sean Lincecum, a major part of Tim Lincecum’s upbringing and an inspiration for Tim’s stellar pitching career with the Giants, died last month at 37. He was four years older than Tim, who threw on a side field Tuesday with a heavy heart, the memory of Sean fresh in his mind as he began the next chapter of his career with his third team. Tim flew to Arizona after attending Sean’s funeral Saturday. “That’s a tough thing to put into words right now,” said Lincecum, who declined to specify his brother’s cause of death. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot with the services happening a couple of days ago. For me, I always looked up to my brother. He was an idol for me. He just had a lot of bad runs with choices he made in life. That’s where we’re at right now.” Lincecum’s close relationship with his father, Chris, is well-chronicled. Chris has been his mentor, coach and friend and taught him nonconforming mechanics that helped him flourish in the big leagues.

SF Giants Press Clips Friday, July 14, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Madison Bumgarner’s impact on ‘psyche of club’ John Shea SAN DIEGO — The ace officially is back in business. Manager Bruce Bochy announced his newly aligned rotation, and Madison Bumgarner will pitch Saturday, his first Giants start since April 19. “We missed his voice ... and his BP,” Bochy said as Bumgarner took his hacks in batting practice during Thursday’s workout at Petco Park. Johnny Cueto, who started Sunday in the Giants’ final game before the All-Star break, gets the ball for Friday’s opener against the Padres, followed by Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija. Matt Moore will start Monday’s homestand opener against Cleveland, and Ty Blach will pitch Tuesday. Matt Cain, the odd man out, took the high road with his move to the bullpen. He has 325 career starts and eight relief appearances, including four in September and one Sunday. As a starter this season, he has a 5.58 ERA. 1 “I’m looking forward to it,” Cain said. “I’ve got to go about this like it’s a new challenge. ... There’s no issue with going down there. It’ll be a good thing.” Bumgarner made just three starts before injuring his shoulder and ribs in his April 20 dirt-bike accident in Colorado, and the Giants showed very little in his absence. They’re 34-56 and 27 games behind the first-place Dodgers, five back of the fourth-place Padres. “It’s great to have Bum back,” Cain said. “It was definitely odd not having him in the rotation, so we’re excited having him back and having him around the clubhouse more.” The rotation is set up so that Cueto gets four starts before the trade deadline July 31.

Baseball By Dan Sapone “There are only two seasons - Winter and Baseball.” — Bill Veeck. “Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical" — Yogi Berra = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Baseball Here in February, the day Lou Seal shows up at my granddaughter’s school in San Francisco, in full uniform, you KNOW baseball is just around the corner. Why did he appear at Quinn’s school? Was it to introduce young people to the magic of baseball and the optimism that spring training embodies? The timing is clear: Spring Training is about to begin and, once again, it’s magic. All you have to do is say the words “Spring Training” and serious baseball fans can feel the magic. Disclaimer: I was a basketball player. It was the only sport I was any good at, but I grew up loving baseball — I watched it ever since 1961 when my brother-in-law Joe Faletti took me and my nephews to my first Giants’ game at Candlestick Park; I listened to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons describe it on the radio; I lived and died by the fortunes of My Giants. Baseball mattered to a kid growing up in the 1950s/60s in Antioch, CA. It became personal. [Click here for my personal, brief playground baseball history.] In baseball, the approach of Spring Training is a hopeful time — no scores yet, no losses, no strikeouts or disappointments. Even after My Giants’ dreadful 2017 season (we’re not gonna talk about that) the slate is clean and all things are possible. In 2016, my son Matt and his wife Nou took Gretta and me to our first Spring Training in Arizona.

SF Giants Press Clips Saturday, June 3, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Younger Giants rout Phillies behind Blach, Span Henry Schulman PHILADELPHIA — In the midst of his first five-hit game as a Giant, Denard Span stood in center field, looked to his right and saw Orlando Calixte in his fourth big-league game. To his left was Austin Slater in his major-league debut. In the dugout was Christian Arroyo. On the mound, 26-year-old rookie Ty Blach was humming toward his first big-league shutout and complete game. When Plan A goes awry in baseball, Plan B is usually youth. In the midst of a terrible season, the Giants are moving in that direction. “I know these guys are definitely bringing a little energy,” Span said after a highly irregular 10-0 Giants rout of the even more forlorn Phillies. “Sometimes it can give the team a little freshness.” Under Plan A, which included Madison Bumgarner healthy, Blach still might be in the bullpen instead of the rotation, where he is doing a phenomenal MadBum impersonation. 1 Blach allowed seven singles but only one runner reached second base in his 112-pitch victory. He has won his past four starts and finished at least seven innings in six of the eight starts he has made as Bumgarner’s place-holder. Also, facing a brutal pitching staff on a team that went 6-22 in May, Blach became the second pitcher in the past 33 years and the first Giant since Ray Sadecki in 1969 to draw three walks.
