Background: Chen Show Mao is a full-time Member of Parliament serving the people of Aljunied GRC (Paya Lebar division). Until his election in 2011, Chen Show Mao was a partner of Davis Polk & Wardwell, one of the leading law firms in the world. He managed the China practice of the firm based in Beijing, and had extensive experience in large complex international securities offerings as well as cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions.

He advised the Agricultural Bank of China on its 2010 US$22 billion initial public offering (IPO), which was the largest IPO in history. He advised the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) on its 2006 US$21 billion IPO, which in its turn was the largest IPO in history, and the first-ever global share offering that included a concurrent listing in China. He also advised China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) on its proposed US$19 billion acquisition of Unocal, the largest attempted takeover of an overseas target by a Chinese company. Show Mao received much recognition for his professional accomplishments as a corporate lawyer, including most recently by The American Lawyer as 2010 Dealmaker of the Year before he left practice.

Before he began full-time practice as a corporate lawyer, Show Mao worked at a number of research institutions such as Ralph Nader’s Centre for Study of Responsive Law (CSRL), the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Research & Planning and Enforcement divisions of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

He is a Rhodes Scholar, and an alumnus of Harvard, Oxford and Stanford Universities. While at Stanford, he was awarded the prize for the best paper in law and economics.

As a student in , Show Mao studied at Nanyang Primary School, Catholic High School and Anglo-Chinese School. He was the president of the student council at and was top student in Singapore for the 1979 “A” level examinations.

During NS, Show Mao served as an infantry platoon commander at the Fifth Singapore Infantry Regiment (5SIR) and as Brigade Adjutant, or DYS1, at the headquarters of the Third Singapore Infantry Brigade (3SIB).

Philosophy: Show Mao believes that the best way to ensure good governance for Singapore is through the growth of a competitive opposition that offers a credible alternative to the party in government.
