Moose Riders had a very good year; however, our State Chairman could not deliver the presentation he was so anxious to give. Only two days before the Saturday session, he and his wife were riding back from Cape Coral where he had been attending to some Moose Rider business, when the rear tire of his motorcycle blew. The bike went down and Mark "Tiny" Metcalf suffered fatal injuries. His wife Margret suffered a broken thumb, road rash, and other bruises, all of which will heal. What will never heal is her broken heart. Moose Riders throughout the state are mourning the man who worked so hard in his short term of office to raise Moose Riders to a new and stronger level. His big heart and caring soul were well-known by many. What Mark wanted to tell everyone at the Annual Convention was that Moose Riders raised $20,098.75 for contributions to a variety of charities at the Lodge and District levels. In addition, Moose Riders raised $42,635.57 for our three major charities: Mooseheart, Moosehaven, and the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch. Other contributions included $2996 to Multiple Sclerosis in the name of Mark and Margret Metcalf taken during the June 5, 2010 North Hillsboro Moose the daughter of our past Chairman. Mark was excited to be able to announce the Lodge 1741 Poker Run to benefit the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. total funds raised by Moose Riders since October of 2009 was $68,680.88. Much of our success in reaching this number was due to Tiny's encouragement and his enthusiasm. Filling his shoes will be a huge task, but as Moose Riders we will all work together to further his vision and become stronger. Mark's Lodge, Riverview, held a Memorial Ride and Service on October 30th. The following email from Chris Ecker of Moose International was read at the Moose Riders presentation at the Annual Convention. "In recognition of Mark Metcalf's extraordinary effectiveness in, sadly, his short time as State Moose Rider Chairman of the Florida Bermuda Moose Association Moose Riders and in consideration of his willingness to bridge gaps and mend fences within the Fraternity, and his commitment to our causes of Mooseheart and Moosehaven, the Membership Department of Moose International is instituting the Mark "Tiny" Metcalf memorial "Big Heart" Award in conjunction with the annual National Moose Ride 4 Kids Day. The 2011 National Moose Ride 4 Kids Day will be promoted in conjunction with the annual Mooseheart Bike Blessing and Run on May 21, 2011. There will be a coordinated resource page and program materials for participating Moose Rider groups across the nation and in Canada that will include pledge sheets, sponsor letters, and event planners available on the Moose Charities website. The award will be presented annually to the single Moose Rider group in the fraternity raising the most funds for Mooseheart Child City & School during their Lodge's Moose Ride 4 Kids Event. Additionally, any Moose Rider Group attending the Mooseheart Bike Blessing & Run may qualify by presenting their donations to Mooseheart the day of the event, in person. As Mark was a great motivator and unifier through the Moose Rider program in life, so too we hope his spirit and hopes for Moose Rider growth and recognition--and his big heart--will live on with Moose Ride 4 Kids and the Mark "Tiny" Metcalf "Big Heart" Award."

MESSAGE FROM THE REGIONAL MANAGER

Here we are starting the countdown to the end of the Moose Year. The first six months flew by and it won’t be long and we will be in Tampa for the Mid Year Conference and a few days away from May 1, 2011. What a great Convention we had in Tampa. Supreme Prelate Jim Henderson and Grand Regent Libby Schmidt were fantastic. If you missed it you sure missed a good one. This convention was one of the best attended in many years. The committee reports were great as always, after all we are the best and as our new President Chuck Myers says, We Are A Cut Above The Rest. Congratulations to all our new Officers elected and appointed at the Convention as well as the new Chairman. I know they will all do a great job and will help us reach our goals. I am looking forward to working with each and every one of them. I know with their help, FBMA will be number one. The Time Is Now for us to look at our progress to this point and start asking if our Lodge, Chapter or Moose Legion is on track to have a gain in active members. It is also the time to be checking that we are on track to have a gain in assets, to make sure that our units are going to make their awards and it is also time for us to be checking to see it the Florida Bermuda Moose Association is going to be the Top Association in Anaheim. At this time we are ahead of last year in production, however our number of active members is down. The one way to make sure we are the Top Association is to have a gain in active members at the end of the year. We all need to keep promoting the NEVER PAY DUES AGAIN. We also need to start working on our arrears lists and contact those who have not paid. The Time Is Now, to be proactive and contact those members who are about to expire and ask if they are going to renew and if not why. The Time Is Now, to make sure we are giving our members what we promised them when we asked them to join. The Time Is Now to be making your plans to be in Anaheim for the Convention. It has been many years since the International Convention has been in California so let’s all go out there and see if their sunshine and warm weather is any better than ours. We are fortunate that July 4th is going to be a free day to be able to take in some of the local sights and perhaps get to see the fireworks at Disney. I am looking forward the remainder of this year and I am confident that with all of us working together for the common cause, we can and will be the Top Association. In closing I have been asked by a few members for the “Legend Of The Locked Horns” so here it is. Enjoy and listen to what it is saying. Practice it each and every day and we will have harmony in our lodges. In the primeval wilds of the northland, two noble moose, leaders of their herds, met in deadly combat. Today their locked antlers, mute evidence of the futility of antagonism and strife, lie bleaching on the plains. When we meet as brothers, united in a common cause, let the spirit of harmony and fraternal regard, temper and guide our deliberations, lest we be blinded to the Lesson Of The “Locked Horns.” Fraternally, Jerry Monk, Regional Manager

TAMPA, Florida - A Resolution by the Florida Bermuda Moose Association conferring Regional Manager Jerry Monk with the title of Honorary Past President was read at the Saturday Night Banquet. Congratulations Jerry! 4 Photograph by Debra J. Smith FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

The Annual Convention had many good things reported throughout it’s duration. Thank you to all the Past District Presidents, Committee Chairmen and Committeemen for all their good work. With such a great organization we will be number one in Anaheim in 2011. Our Regional Manager, Jerry Monk, thinks we can do it and he has been there before. District Presidents, let's have a banner year for the FBMA. I know you can do it. A big thank you to our Official Visitor, Jim Henderson and his wife, Joyce. While Jim was listed in the convention program as the Supreme Governor, he hasn't made it that far yet. Jim and Joyce were a lot of fun on their first visit to a Florida Convention. The memorial service for Moose Riders Chairman Mark "Tiny" Metcalf of Riverview Lodge 2158 was held on October 30, 2010. The turnout was tremendous with riders all the way from South Carolina in attendance. Riders left Riverview at 11:00am in a procession over three miles long. Condolences from the FBMA go out to Mark’s family. He will be missed. Reports on retention for the first half of the year were kind of gloomy. THE TIME IS NOW to find out why our members are not renewing their dues. Some are not renewing because of the economy, some are not renewing because they have moved out of the area, but some are not renewing because our Lodges are not very friendly. THE TIME IS NOW to make sure that we have the Friendliest Lodges in Town. I am looking forward to being your State President for the ensuing year. THE TIME IS NOW to stand behind all of our fraternal programs and support our children at Mooseheart and our seniors at Moosehaven. Remember, we are "A Cut Above the Rest!"

Charles ‘Chuck’ Myers F.B.M.A. President

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY GRAND REGENT

First I want to congratulate Chuck Myers on being elected FBMA president for the coming year. I know we will work together to have a very positive year and be number 1 in Anaheim.

Co-workers from Lauderdale Lakes Chapter 1699, let me again congratulate you on the wonderful job you did at the Annual Convention in October.

THE TIME IS NOW to sponsor 2 candidates and get your dues paid for the next year. This is the best incentive International has come up with for membership building. I know we can do this. Get started on retention and get back the members we have waiting in the background, just waiting for someone to call them and make them feel wanted. I think we sometimes forget about the ones we sponsor and let them feel neglected.

The holidays are fast approaching and I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones.

Until next time remember "A snowflake is one of God's most fragile creations, but look what they can do when they stick together." Co-workers and brothers please work together and make all of Florida Lodges and Chapters the best in the entire Fraternity.

Fraternally, Phyllis Jewett Deputy Grand Regent 5 FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATION SECRETARY

This was a fantastic Convention even with the rough economy we had the largest turnout for the men in years. Thanks to all who attended. The District Presidents did an outstanding job of fund raising for a total of $195,054.77 with $23,940.94 going to the Endowment Fund. District 24 is the Fund Raising Champ with a fantastic amount of $28,412.00. The following Lodges made donations of over $1,000 during the march of checks and they were: Hialeah 1074 with $1,200, Brandon 1880 with $4,400, Quincy 2672 with $1,234.43, Highlands County 2494 with $2,500, Pensacola 557 with $1,500, Panama City 1389 with $1,500, Golden Triangle 874 with $1,000, Fort Myers 1899 with $2,600, Tallahassee 1075 with $10,700, Brooksville 1676 with $2,750, Venice 1308 with $2,125, Merritt Island 2073 with $1,209, Lake City 624 with $1,800 and Lake Panasoffkee 1179 with $2,050. Special thanks to the Moose Riders with donations of $3,000 to Mooseheart, $3,000 to Moosehaven and $3,000 to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches and the Sebring Moose Riders donated $1,500 for the same projects. I am very said to notify everyone that District 13 President Ted Cavoores passed away on October 26th and our Moose Riders Chairmen Mark (Tiny) Metcalf died in a motorcycle accident after his rear tire blew out. Our prayers are with their families. We start the year with many new District Presidents along with a new Executive Committee member, Prelate Richard B. Jones. Chuck Myers advanced to President, with David Smith advancing to Vice President, Lynn Klein as Treasurer, Stephen Del Corso as Jr. Past President and I will be serving as Secretary. Special thanks to Tom Saunders for all his contributions over the past years and I guess he finally fell of the end of the platform. Let’s go into to the new year with our new motto, A CUT ABOVE THE REST, along with promoting, The Time is Now and Never Pay Dues Again. Let’s get to work. Scott Cushing, F.B.M.A. Secretary

FRATERNAL EDUCATION CORNER

News from the recent FBMA Annual Convention: Amendments were made to the FBMA By-Laws concerning Association dues for the Lodges. This change will provide Leadership Training Sessions next year for free and will not cost the Lodge or individual any money for the Officers or any members who attend the session. The incentive for a Lodge to have at least 6 elected officers present at the same session will still apply. There will be 2 drawings at the FBMA Annual Convention for $400 and $200 to a Lodge that qualifies with the 6 elected officers present. Additionally, there was a sound-off session on Thursday with over 40 men present and the following items were discussed: (1) How do we get younger men to join the fraternity? (2) The web site needs to be updated for the Moose Legion, (3) You need to have 15 years of continuous membership to be eligible to attend Moosehaven (along with many other things). Would it be possible if you had 10 years, could you somehow purchase the other 5 years through Moose International? (4) Can a Recorder act as an assistant Administrator and if so, can she be paid? (5) The 800 pound gorilla - How does a Lodge handle the smoking/non smoking issue? (6) Suggestion to hold a meet and greet joint orientation on the 5th Wednesday (or any 5th week day) to educate all members not just the new ones. (7) Question about people transferring to #3000 as their dues are less. There is a $20 transfer fee and there are dues. (8) A recommendation to use Email communication such as email blast to send information to Lodge members quickly to keep them informed of happenings at the Lodge. (9) What is the procedure of the application review committee and what happens if applicant is found to have a felony charge? (10) Lodges should not count on money from machines, the prices they charge for food and beverages need to be sufficient to cover expenses. To go into depth with these questions would require most of the Courier and for some of these thoughts there are no definitive answers. I know a lot was learned that day. Are you aware of the new compliance modifiers regarding risk pool? Information is at your Lodge. Thank a teacher (and our parents) for the time they took so that we can write and read allowing us to continue to learn and teach others. 6 Fraternally, Jerry Thompson FEC Chairman 7 MOOSEHAVEN

Moosehaven Welcomes Record Halloween Throng Of 2,000 Trick-or-Treaters, Plus 1,000 Parents!

ORANGE PARK, FL - In 2009, Moosehaven Executive Director John Capes welcomed 1,500 visitors to the Third Annual Trick-or-Treat Event for the Orange Park community--which had been double the turnout of the roughly 750 who had visited the year before. This year, on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 30, the turnout doubled AGAIN -- as more than 3,000 visitors (roughly 2,000 of them costumed young ghosts and goblins) lined up on the 70-acre campus for the opportunity to trick-or-treat their way through seven Moosehaven residences, including the sprawling Life Care Center, where dozens of residents handed out candy and other treats. An added attraction this year was the "Merry Scary Haunted House," staffed by residents, staff and volunteers. "Tommy Moose", the Moose organization's Community Service representative, was on hand to greet guests at the event that was begun in 2007 as the first of what has developed into a relatively full calendar of what has come to be known as Moosehaven's "Heart of the Community" events, during which the campus is opened to the Orange Park community for various celebrations. As Capes has noticed, both the Halloween event and the springtime Easter Egg Hunt event are especially win-win situations for both Moosehaven residents and young families alike. Moosehaven's seniors thoroughly enjoy their small-fry visitors, and young parents welcome a situation in which their youngsters can trick-or-treat in a safe, welcoming, controlled environment. Hundreds of pounds of candy were donated for the 2010 Trick-or-Treat Event by the Florida-Bermuda Moose Association. Article and photographs excepted from the Moosehaven Link at www.mooseintl.org

Mooseheart Children Visit Moose International Headquarters For Trick-or-Treating: A Photo Album

A longstanding Halloween custom at Mooseheart calls for kids to leave school on Oct. 31 (or the last weekday before the big day) in costumes, and head with their Family Teachers to the Moose International Headquarters building roughly at 3 p.m. for trick-or-treating. All treats are donated by employees and their families -- and trust us, each young trick-or-treater walks away with a major haul! This past Friday, Oct. 29 was no exception!

POMPANO BEACH LODGE LAUNCHES PROJECT OUTREACH

POMPANO BEACH, Florida - A few years ago, Pilgrim Billy Dalrymple, a member of Pompano Beach Lodge #2157, undertook a very special Community Service Project - Help For The Homeless! Sure, you see the Homeless on many street corners every day, but you try not to really "see" them. Some people think "look at those lazy people" or "why don't they get a job", etc. But, the truth is, they could be any one of us. Most families are just a few paychecks away from becoming homeless. Tragedies happen. Circumstances change. At every monthly District 3 and 4 Meetings Billy asked for donations of clothing, toiletries, shoes, etc. He organized drops at our Lodge and would go to any Lodge to pick up the items. He "volunteered" members at other Lodges to help. There was never a way to say "no" to Billy, he just Back row (left to right) - Bolton Bunting, Fred Scott, Ed McGurn and Governor pushed on and never gave up! Bob Deppert. Everyone who knew him just had to love him. Our Governor, Bob Deppert, wanted to honor this great man and keep alive his dream of Helping The Homeless. Bob contacted Nina Corbe, Community Service Associate for the Homeless Center, and told her of his plans for a Special Fundraiser to benefit the homeless at the Shelter. For months he spread the word that we would be collecting NEW items: baby clothes, diapers, formula, lotions, powder, wipes blankets, adult toiletries, clothing, etc., etc. He received items at our District 4 and at District 3 Meetings and at our Lodge. Even in these hard times, he was brought items by the bag full and box full! Our Moose members are amazing, they reached deep and kept giving and giving! Then Bob invited everyone to attend PROJECT OUTREACH, in Honor of Billy Dalrymple, on September 18, 2010, for a Special Dinner and dancing. Right up until we served dinner, members were still bringing in items! During the announcements, Bob brought Jan Dalrymple (Billy's widow)) to the front of the room and Jan thanked everyone for their attendance and show of support and love. She then introduced Nina Corbe. Nina informed us that there are currently 200 people living at the Shelter and 18 of them are babies! Bob and Jan then presented Nina with a monetary Donation, as well as the donated items - bags and bags and bags and bags full! Nina was speechless! As she smiled through her tears, she thanked everyone for their love and generosity! Governor Bob Deppert thanked those who helped in so many ways to make this event happen, especially our Members who made it all possible! He reminded everyone that this is an ongoing Community Service Project. The Kitchen Crew (left to right) Steve Hankin, What a great evening. PALM BAY COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO BUILD FENCE TO PROTECT NEIGHBORHOOD

PALM BAY, Florida - Some Palm Bay community members spent their Saturday building a safer neighborhood in an area known for off road vehicle traffic. The goal is putting up what's been deemed the Ivanhoe Project, a 1,000 foot section of fence along a heavily wooded area in the 800 block of Ivanhoe Street, where houses sit directly across the roadway. "Anything we can do to make it a nicer, safer place we'll always be willing to do that," said Mike Guidice with Palm Bay Moose Lodge. Residents had complained to the city about heavy ATV use on the 16 acres of undeveloped land and were concerned about four wheelers darting into the street with children nearby. Officials said the road itself is a danger. The residences are on one side and the open woods where the ATVs ride is on the other. With the help of Lowes' donation of supplies, the local Moose Lodge and Parks and Recreation workers chipping in, volunteers put up the 2 foot high fence to block ATVs from going on the street. "This is going to make a huge difference. It is going to keep the children and ATVs separate from one another by putting up this barrier fence. And hopefully make the area a lot safer," said Antoinette Jackson with the Palm Bay Lowe's. The donation of materials and time was crucial. "What's rare is actually being able to do something. Right now, with budgets being what they are it's not something we could just throw money at because we have to prioritize. So with the public-private partnership, it's worked out really well," said Milo Zonke with the Palm Bay City Council. The land is planned to be rezoned for use as a city park. Eight of the eleven new Pilgrims attended the outing which was the most new Pilgrims ever in attendance at the annual outing. The new pilgrims served as guest bartenders. There were 50/50 and Cooler of Cheer drawings and as always the poker games took center stage along with other card games being played. Also a few of the members played golf on Saturday morning. A big event every year is the Chinese auction. It was so big this year that tables had to be borrowed from the Kissimmee Moose Lodge to accommodate all the items that members and their ladies had donated. On Saturday evening everyone was taken by bus to the Robert and Yvonne Coleman standing by the Pilgrim banner that Steve Caraccio made and donated to the Pilgrims. The round Pilgrim emblems Outta Control Magic/ Comedy Dinner show. There they were were donated by Robert and Gloria "Honey" Winnubst. served unlimited cheese and pepperoni pizza as well as salad, pop- corn, beer, wine, soda and dessert. The evening was enjoyed by all. Article by Robert F. Coleman-Pilgrim Secretary photograph by Barbara Ruffo

FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Readers and Contributors, In the past few months I have received mailings and emails concerning upcoming Lodge Sporting events and flyers concerning upcoming Lodge events. There is not room in the Courier for a section designated to this type of information. The only upcoming events that are included in the Courier are those events concerning the Association, Mooseheart, Moosehaven or information from Moose International. I will however be happy to publish any articles concerning the success of these events after their completion. The Association’s Webmaster, Steve Caraccio, has created a Bulletin Board section on the F.B.M.A. website specifically for the purpose of advertising upcoming events. Please send any information you would like to share with the members to him at [email protected]. Fraternally, Debra J. Smith, Editor 27 SPORTS TALK

Well, we finally got to the end of the year and what a year we had. Ten Lodges hosted tournaments in pool, golf, darts and horseshoes and what a time they had and the members of the sports committee were right there for all of it. I want to thank all the members of the Lodges and Chapters who went out of their way to make every one of the tournaments a success and I can’t forget to thank the members of the Sports committee for the miles they drive and the hours they put in to see that all goes right. They make my job a lot easer. By the time you read this we will have selected the locations for the 2011 Tournaments. We know the Jack and Jill Pool Tournament will be held on February 4, 5 and 6, at Orlando Lodge #766 and the Golf Tournament will be held the on June 11 and 12. The rest of the dates and locations will be on the website (floridamoose.org) as soon as they are scheduled. We had a great time at the Horseshoe Tournament at Suwannee River Lodge #325. The pits had been redone and the Lodge was ready for us. They put together a family (as they like to be called ) to work at every position needed. Herb Clark led the team and what a leader he was. The Lodge can be proud to have the family they do. Results of the Horseshoe Tournament are listed below. I will be looking for applications for all the sports tournaments to be held in 2012, the Jack and Jill Pool Tournament and the Golf Tournament must be in by the first week in July, all others must be in by the first week of November. This gives a Lodge almost one year to plan. I can think of no better way to have fun and make money at the same time. And Remember THINK FUN Ed Layton, F.B.M.A. Sports Chairman
