MESSAGE FROM THE REGIONAL MANAGER

“The Time Is Now,” for one Moose Year to come to and end and another to begin. What a year it has been. Rodney Hammond laid the path for the year and you took it. We are having a banner year in membership production. We are well on our way to crushing our Association Quota. The question to ask is, are we going to have a gain in membership by April 30. “The Time IS Now”, to be looking at our expired and dropped member lists and be on the phone contacting these members and explain how vital their membership is to Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Even if they do not visit the lodge as much as they used to, let them know how important they are. Don’t be afraid to ask why they have let their dues lapse. Listen to what they have to say and then act on it if it is something in your control. Perhaps they have fallen on hard times and just can’t afford the dues at this time. Consider helping a brother or coworker and ask if you could pay their dues for them for this year. I know from personal experience that next year they will figure out a way to pay if they know we really do what we say we do, take care of each other. Let them know that if they sponsor and enroll two members each year they will never have to pay dues again.

“The Time Is Now,” to promote the FBMA Membership Campaign, “7 Come 11”. Those LOOM members who sponsor 11 members from January 1, 2011 to July 31, 2011 will have their name placed in a random drawing worth $700.00 - a $500.00 gift card to the Imperial Palace in Biloxi and $200.00 spending cash. You will be required to provide your own transportation however.

“The Time Is Now,” to be looking forward to the International Convention in Anaheim, California. We have got some work to do to be the Top Association when we get there, but if we have a gain in membership at the end of April, we might just do it. “Yes We Can,” if we all work hard to make it happen.

“The Time Is Now,’ to also start looking at how we can do even better next year. Each of our lodges have the tools to be the best of the best, all it takes is a board of officers that are willing to take on the task and do it. May 1, 2011 starts a new venture for many Lodge Officers and I encourage each of them to attend the Leadership Training Session in their area and learn how to use the tools Moose International provides us to be the best. These training sessions are free, so there is no excuse not to have all 9 Officers and all 11 Standing Committee Chairman along with all their committee members attend. If you truly want to be a Fraternal Leader, step up to the plate and get all the training you can. Even if you have been in the last year or two, you can always learn something new.

“The Time Is Now’, to be at the Mid-Year Conference in Tampa. Director Of Membership Shawn Baile and Moosehaven Board Member Jeanenne Lautzenheiser will surely enlighten us all and I know they will be fun to be with. I know this Mid-Year Conference is being held over Easter and many have said they would not be there. I hope they change their minds and come. We will be having non-denominational church service on Sunday with Moosehaven’s Helen Taylor delivering the message.

I am looking forward to seeing al of you in Tampa and I am sure we will all have a good time and learn a lot. As President Chuck says, “We Are A Cut Above The Rest’, and I say that is what makes us the best.

Fraternally, Jerry Monk, Regional Manager

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Ah, Spring! The time for new beginnings - and new Officers! Hopefully those who have been elected and re-elected to their Lodge Board of Officers will be in attendance at the Conference in Tampa. I have always found that I leave these Conferences and Conventions feeling better able to face the challenges presented by holding an office. The enthusiasm generated by hearing what our Lodges are doing on a daily basis, and the information presented by those who are genuinely interested in promoting our Fraternity is priceless.

We are so fortunate to have some of the finest leaders, trainers and hard workers as members of the FBMA. We have set the bar very high for other states to match us, and I'm proud of all those who have come before me, and who will surely come after me. What concerns me are those Officers who never take advantage of what the FBMA has to offer. It is my wish that each of you who read this publication, attend the Conference and Convention, and avail themselves of the training our Association offers, will encourage at least one new person to go with you this year. Make it your goal to mentor a "newbie" and lead the way for someone to take up the cause when you finally choose to rest awhile. Think of it as a form of insurance - it may not be needed immediately, but it's nice to know it's there.

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to thank all the Lodges, Chapters, Districts, and individuals who have taken the time to send my wife, Lois, and me so, so many letters, e-mails and phone calls during my recent hospitalization. Each day brought some words of encouragement from at least one or more Moose member. You brightened my day and gave me renewed strength to face the challenges I have been given. There is not doubt in my mind - you are " A CUT ABOVE THE REST!

Charles (Chuck) Myers, F.B.M.A. President

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY GRAND REGENT

Hello Co-Workers. It's conference time again and I can hardly wait to see all our NEW FRIENDS in April at the Academy of Friendship Session. Congratulations to all of you. Have you sponsored two new co-workers to earn free dues for next year? If not there is still time to do so. Also, don’t forget there is still time to “win the Grand Chancellor’s cash”. Don't miss out on this deal. I know we will learn new things from our official visitor, Jeannene Lautzenheiser, Past Director of Finance. She is a wonderful person and I know you will enjoy getting to know her. I want to congratulate the 2010-2011 Boards of Officers for our Chapters and wish them the very best. To the incoming Boards of Officers, have a great time being an Officer and serving your Chapter. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Always remember to keep your words soft just in case you have to eat them.

Fraternally Phyllis Jewett, Deputy Grand Regent 5 FRATERNAL EDUCATION CORNER

FREE FREE FREE I know seeing the word free would get me to at least look to see what it was all about. I hope I aroused your curiosity enough that you will at least scan part of this article. The Leadership Training Sessions (LOS) will be held beginning April 30 and on the following three weeks at 24 Moose lodges around the state. The free part comes in as members will not have to pay to attend the sessions. In the past a Lodge may have felt they couldn’t pay the fees to have more than one or two members attend the sessions. That will no longer be the case. Any member or co-worker can attend to learn more about the duties and responsibilities of the various offices and chairmen positions. Actually, this year the presentation has been changed by Moose International with a new power point presentation and the “Forward in the Good Onward in the Right” booklet has been rewritten and is now identified as “The Officers and Committeemen Handbook”. The books just became available to the instructors in March which shows how new they are. The FBMA will still have the incentive program whereas if a Lodge has 6 elected officers attend the same session, their Lodge will have the opportunity to win one of two prizes that will be awarded at the Annual Convention in October. The first Lodge name drawn will be awarded $200 and the second Lodge name drawn will be awarded $400 provided a member of that Lodge is present when the drawings are held. It was a mixed blessing following someone like David Flood in chairing the Fraternal Education Committee. Not only did he have the entire program in great shape with David Smith heading up the Leadership Training, Brenda Brady heading up the two day Hands On Technical Training courses, trainers in place and Joe Marshall handling the inventory, but Dave Flood is also a trainer extraordinaire who knows all the ins and outs of the training along with showmanship. He started writing this column and now I have to be half as witty as he was in providing information along with some humorous insights. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.-- Author Unknown. Fraternally, Jerry Thompson FEC chairman

Moosehaven's Irvin "Fergie" Ferguson and Avis Rasmussen are Wed on Campus, March 4

ORANGE PARK, Florida - On Friday, March 4, Moosehaven residents Avis Rasmussen and Irvin W. "Fergie" Ferguson were married in the Moosehaven Chapel. Presiding over the wedding was Reverend Helen Taylor. The wedding was attended by many Moosehaven friends, and friends from area Lodges and Chapters. The newly married couple took the traditional ride around the campus in a beautifully decorated golf cart. A reception followed in Michigan Building, which was also Mr. and Mrs. Irvin “Fergie” Ferguson decorated for the occasion. Guests enjoyed cake, punch and wine, as well as live music and socializing. The happy couple now resides in Hall.

Moosehaven Residents and Staff Celebrate Mardi Gras With a Festive Parade

ORANGE PARK, Florida - March 10 - All the colorful pizzazz that marks a Mardi Gras parade was on display at Moosehaven March 8 when residents and staff literally pulled out all the stops and "laissez les bon temps rouler" - let the good times roll. Residents and staff decorated a variety of vehicles - golf carts, automobiles, bicycles, tricycles, motorcycles and even a Moosehaven bus for the parade, which moved from one end of the campus to the other, culminating at the Michigan Building, where an ice cream social was held. Bill McFarland (left) and Pat McFarland, residents of Participants in the parade and those Moosehaven's recently-opened Brandon Place development, viewing the parade came dressed in a variety came properly decked-out to attend the campus' Mardi Gras parade. of colorful costumes and masks. Mardi Gras culminates every year on "Fat Tuesday," the day before Ash Wednesday, and signals the Christian Lenten season, which is a time of fasting and reflection leading toward Easter. Parades are commonplace on Fat Tuesday -- and Moosehaven certainly showed that its residents had the spirit of the holiday at-heart. Prizes were given to the best-decorated golf carts by both residents and staff. Articles and photographs excerpted from the Moosehaven website at mooseintl.org 8 MOOSEHEART

Mooseheart Gives Band Director Steve Schmidt Rousing Send-Off Veteran bandleader travels to New York this weekend to receive Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Award MOOSEHEART, March 10 - People laughed, people hugged and people ate celebratory cake. You'd have thought Steve Schmidt, Mooseheart's band director of 23 years, was retiring. Although the long-time bandleader is leaving campus--it's just for a long weekend. And the trip Schmidt and his family are taking to New York City indicates why there was plenty of laughter, hugging and cake-eating in the school gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon Schmidt got the news on Jan. 21 that he had been named one of just five school band directors, nationwide, to receive the ninth annual Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Award. The award is given to musical educators who best embody the characteristics of "Glenn Holland," the Academy Award-nominated portrayal by Richard Dreyfuss in the 1995 hit movie Mr. Holland's Opus. Schmidt and his family departed from on Thursday for a weekend in New York that will be capped on Saturday when the awards are presented by jazz great Wynton Marsalis at Carnegie Hall. But before he left, Mooseheart had a few surprises for Schmidt. Physical Education teacher Ann Thomas read a Top 10 list of reasons why Schmidt deserved the award, which came with a $10,000 honorarium as well as the expenses-paid trip to New York. Coming at the top of list was: "Mr. Schmidt pays if forward. He takes his heart and soul and all he knows, and tries to instill this knowledge in his students. ... He loves all of you and the music you make. He treats his job here like Mr. Holland did - for the love of the students he transforms into musical geniuses." William B. Airey, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Moose International, mentioned that he had spoken with Schmidt about whether or not he would attend a Broadway show while in New York. On hearing that Schmidt would like to see one of the ongoing previews for "Spider-Man," Airey worked to procure two tickets, which he presented to Schmidt. "Steve is bringing honor to himself, his family and to the Mooseheart community," Airey said. "We believe the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation was correct when they selected you for this special award." After receiving congratulations from the Mooseheart Board on behalf of Executive Director Scott Hart, Schmidt conducted the band for a selection. The key moment of the hour-long sending-off came next, when three former band students spoke of their time in Schmidt's band. David Townsend and Curt Cohoon graduated in 1997, while Marco Namowicz graduated in 2009. Each had fond memories of being a Mooseheart band student. "Mr. Schmidt, over the years I have known him, has been a teacher, mentor and a friend," Namowicz said. "He is probably the most influential person in my life. Since joining band in the fourth grade, he has been a motivational figure every step of the way, making sure that my dream of being a concert clarinetist comes true." Townsend spoke of the how he didn't particularly like being in the band when he was at Mooseheart in the mid-1990s. "But Steve's enthusiasm is infectious and I couldn't say no," Townsend said. "I learned so many lessons, and Steve is definitely in a league of his own. I teach at Lewis University part-time now, so I understand the difficulties and challenges. To get people to pick up an instrument and learn something is very special." Curt Cohoon owns a business in the Chicago suburbs and works with youth groups at his church. He mentioned that he drove around the Mooseheart campus, his home for 10 years, before he attended the Schmidt's send-off celebration. "I realized that a lot of the homes and areas I used to play are gone," Cohoon said. "It was a bit like coming home to something that didn't even exist any more." As he continued his drive, Cohoon said he realized that "home is truly where the heart is," and this brought him to discuss Schmidt. "I came from a tough background," Cohoon said. "So when it came to trusting another student or another leader, I had my walls up. But every now and then, someone would enter my life who would have a lasting impact." Cohoon said that Schmidt was one of those people. "He took a selfless moment to do nothing more than to know where I was and to extend unconditional love," Cohoon said, turning to address Schmidt directly. "Steve, you opened your arms, you took me in when I was too young, hurt and scared to fully understand the skills you were sharing and teaching." When it came time for Schmidt to speak, he chose to not talk about himself. He chose instead to honor fellow Mooseheart teachers who he feels do just as much good work as he does - like Jen Antonson, whose "game-on" phrase Schmidt said he always finds inspirational. Schmidt wanted the school's students whose original homes were in Africa to raise their hands and cheer and then he praised them for their courage in accepting the challenges not only in a new place, but in a completely different country. "I just want everyone to know that there is a strength and a oneness about this place that makes it unique," Schmidt said. "I feel very strongly about this. We have an amazing place here. I am honored to be a part of this place, where people come and give their hearts and souls, whether they are teachers, administrators or students. When I get to New York, I am going to tell them about the people I just talked about. I am going to wear them out with stories about Mooseheart." Finally, Schmidt asked Zach Rice-Scotti to step forward and to give the pledge that students say every day. The final words of the pledge are "Rambler Pride" and they are repeated, each time louder than the one preceding it. Rambler Pride - that unseen force - was the one thing Steve Schmidt didn't have to make room in a suitcase for as he prepared to go to New York. Rest assured he'll spread some of that on the Big Apple in the weekend in which he receives his Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation award. 9 Article by Darryl Mellema, Associate Editor, Moose Magazine

COMMUNITY SERVICE and FUNDRAISING

THE NIGHT THE STARS CAME OUT

PALATKA, Florida - Monday night the stars came out at Palatka Lodge 184. The Lodge hosted an art show that showed off the work of "budding" artists in the area. The children of Putnam County stepped up and presented art in many forms: pictures, cut t-shirts, garden stepping stones and jewelry and all to benefit the Community Partnership for Children. Community Partnership for Children is an organization called upon to help children who have been abused or neglected, by finding them short-term housing, assessing their individual situation, teaming them with a Case Man- ager, creating a Case Plan, and transitioning them into safe, long-term care -- whether it be with their immediate family, loving relatives, a guardian, licensed foster care, or an independent living facility. Community Partnership for Children is committed to ensuring a full spectrum of support is available to children and families to enable them to receive individualized care for their unique situation. To accomplish this, we work with public and private agencies, the courts, policymakers, and community members to develop and maintain resources that will support children and families. Through the efforts and involvement of the community, we are able to keep children safe and build strong families. This is a big problem in Putnam County where more than seventy children involved in the program. The young artists, all dressed up, came to show off their art while the adults came to shop. Their efforts raised over $1,000. for this worthy cause. The Moose Riders received an award of appreciation for the Christmas gifts that they supplied for children who had to be removed from their homes over the Holidays. Everyone had a great time! One co-worker remarked that community projects such as this are the reason she joined Palatka Chapter. The Lodge was filled with well behaved children. They enjoyed karaoke with one of the Lodge's entertainers (who volunteered for the event), danced, sang and had a good time knowing that they were able to make a positive difference in our community. The members of Palatka Lodge considered themselves very lucky to have had the opportunity to have hosted this event. Article and photographs submitted by Tura (Tudy) Cundiff

A LITTLE BOY AND TOMMY

Early one morning I was in the emergency room at a local hospital. I happened to see a little boy standing there with his family holding a Tommy Moose. I approached the little boy and asked what he had there. The little boy looked at me and said it was a gift from his mommy and that she had an angel give it to him. I replied ‘your mommy must love you very much’. All the time knowing what Tommy Moose was about so knowing something sad had happened in this child’s life. The little boy said back to me ‘yes, my mommy loves me and I love her too, that’s why the special angel gave this to me’. With tears running down my face and him holding Tommy Moose tight, I said to the little boy that the moose would make him feel better, because special angels brought him this gift and the angels loved him too. With that I walked over to one of the Sheriff’s Deputies standing near by and introduced myself, telling him I was from Lauderdale Lakes Lodge 2267 and that we had donated the Tommy Moose to the Sheriff and Fire Departments at our 9-11 tribute. He informed me he remembered that because he was there that day. He then informed me he had given the little boy the Tommy Moose after him and his mom were in a car accident. The little boy was not hurt because he was in his car seat, but sadly his mom was not so lucky, she had been killed. We as Moose need to realize that we are to this little boy, and other children just like him, their angels every time we give a Tommy Moose. The Time is Now for every Lodge, Chapter and Moose Legion to step up and be a special angel to some child. Purchase and give out Tommy Moose to your local Sheriff, Police and Fire Departments or to a Children’s Hospital. If you don’t already have a Tommy Moose program going in your Lodge, please do it soon. Help some child feel better and get a gift from a special angel. LARGO POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES TOMMY MOOSE DONATION

LARGO, Florida - Largo Lodge No. 2205, located in Largo, Florida, recently donated a supply of Tommy Moose to the Largo Police Department Police Chief John L. Carroll accepted the gift on behalf of the department. A Lodge member who wishes to remain anonymous purchased the Tommy Moose for the donation. The presentation was made on behalf of the Lodge by Lucien ("Lou") Michaud (a past Governor of the Lodge, Higher Degree Member and currently Lodge Treasurer) and his wife Judy Michaud (a Collegian and a Higher Degree member). Judy is also on the staff of the Largo Police Department as a school crossing guard. The Michauds have been Moose members for 30 years. "A stuffed animal toy can serve as an ice breaker when dealing with a child who has been involved in an accident or some kind of crime situation," explained Chief Carroll. "The child is already frightened and nervous, even more so when the police Judy Michaud, Largo Police Chief John L. Carroll and Lou Michaud show up, and giving the child a stuffed toy to hold onto can help to calm them and put them at ease. We've seen a youngster hold onto the toy long after the immediate crisis is over, for lasting comfort." "We want to work with people before they have to go to the hospital or police station. We want to offer comfort at the scene," said Lou Michaud. "We have already given Tommy Moose to the Highway Patrol Department and hope to continue giving them to other law enforcement agencies and the Fire Department." 23 Article and photograph submitted by Sallie Palmer LOYAL ORDER OF THE MOOSE

Hi sports fans. We’re off to another year. We started in Orlando with the Jack and Jill Mixed Pool Tournament. Forty-four teams signed in for two days of fun. The winners are listed below. The Lodge did its usual great job. The food was good and of course the adult beverages were served with love. Teams started showing up at noon on Friday and played till late Sunday. Orlando had the largest number of teams and that is what we need. I will be looking for a Lodge to host the Jack and Jill Tournament in 2012 but if I do not receive any bids then I will choose the Lodge. All regional tournaments are set to go, so download your applications as soon as you can. If you do not play in a regional tournament then you cannot play in the state tournament. Members of each team must come from the same Lodge. On June 11th we will start our two day golf tournament at the Inverary Golf Course hosted by Lauderdale Lakes Lodge #2267. Applications can be found on the FBMA website at floridamoose.org. It’s time for the Lodges to bid for the Jack and Jill Pool Tournament and the Golf tournaments that will be held in 2012. Those two applications MUST be in by the first of July. All other bids are to be in by November 1,s 2011. Traveling golf trophies must be turned in to me at the Mid-Year Conference in Tampa by Saturday morning. That’s all for now but remember….. THINK FUN!
