After scanning all his photos and scrapbooks as a means of preservation, I wanted to do something extra with them. This book is the result of those efforts. I ended up with over 450 photos and newspaper clippings that I have restored over the past three years. Not everything could fit in this book, but I hope it still provides a good overview of what Tom has achieved so far in his life, even beyond the field. All the text was taken from Tom’s hand written notes composed from memory and notebooks, and lovingly typed up by Mum (Patricia). The photos and clippings all came from his numerous scrapbooks and albums which were originally started by his Mum, Mary Carroll and continued by Patricia. After the first edition was so well received, I went back and added an extra 40 pages, including an interview with Dad (Tom) and more newspaper coverage of the Ganmain Premierships. The Carlton era has also been expanded. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed compiling it. Mike (Mick) Carroll - Calgary, September 2019 Grand Final - Sunday September 27, 1964 at Narrandera Sportsground 2.30pm Tom’s Sporting Life - In His Own Words The next hour or so was the most exhilarating experience I have ever felt. The small Narrandera dressing shed was rocking, Griffith were a great side and if they had kicked just a little bit straighter they would have beaten us. But the “Ganmain Spirit” won out. Dad was too nervous to watch the end of the game, so he took off at three-quarter time or a little bit after. Mum, dad and Aunty Mary were on the way home and saying the rosary. They heard the win on the radio. So that might have helped. Dad used to get a bit nervous Tom with the premiership cup at the finish, like we all do. 196 Premiership Team B Bub McCaig Pat Carroll Jim Crouch B HB Jim Carroll Will Kember Bill McCaig HB C Terry Lenon Garry Carroll Ross Symonds C HF Russ Turner Frank Hodgkin Henry Boardman HF F Ben Cedelland Tom Carroll (C) Bernie Dillon F Followers 19 & 20th Des Carroll Roylance Hatty Pat Crouch Rex Kember Frank Hodgkin and Tom. They went in ith Grong-Grong Matong struggling for as favourites and played accordingly, defeating a good numbers and Ganmain well down the ladder, Narrandera side by five or so goals. Wit was decided by both clubs to join together. It was a good launching pad for the future of the So in 1982 the three towns formed the Ganmain Grong- G.G.G.M. club. Grong Matong (G.G.G.M) Football Club. A big meeting was held in the Ganmain hall and although there were a lot of old wounds, common sense prevailed. The vote was almost unanimous and the “Lions” were born. Ex-Coburg player and Coolamon coach Ray “Rocky” O’Connor was appointed senior coach and he asked me to once again help as a selector. I still had the coaching bug and put my hand up to coach the G.G.G.M. third grade Under 19s team. There was a large volume of talented boys which made for an interesting time ahead. We started off with roughly 30 boys to give a game. The seniors under coach “Rocky” O’Connor had an up and down season winning half their games and a lot of work was put in to developing players for future seasons. I had a great time with the 3rds boys only losing a couple of games and finishing in the top two on the ladder. During the year we were allowed to play as many players as we liked. So in the big games I played 24 and against the weaker sides played 27, rotating them in groups of nine on and off the ground. This gave all players a decent amount of game time. What initially began as an archiving and restoring of Tom’s scrapbooks and photos, soon turned into a three-year journey and the creation of this book. Tom’s Sporting Life combines hundreds of restored photos and newspaper clippings with Tom’s personal, hand-written memoirs. Tom first dabbled in cricket and basketball before finding his great successes in Australian Rules Football. This book details his adventures with the Carroll family boys at Ganmain, winning back-to-back Premierships before moving on to the city, Melbourne, to play in the VFL where he earned acclaim as a leading goal kicker with Carlton. Tom then returned home to Ganmain to become a successful playing coach. In addition to Tom’s history-making career with Carlton Football Club, this book is sprinkled with plenty of the era’s local history (Ganmain and region) including basketball, football premierships (including the 1964 nail-biter), the ‘Carroll’s versus the rest’ match, GGGM under 19’s from the 1980s, plus an interview with Tom covering life in Melbourne and his recollections of the Carlton days. ISBN 978-0-646-81594-7 With his attention to detail, strong sense of sportmanship, willingness to give his all, and strong family values, Tom shares his extraordinary skill and profound appreciation of sport. - Mick Carroll 9 780646 815947 > [email protected] mickcarroll.ca ©2020.
