Second Generation (Parents)

2. John Turnbull Blackett, son of Alexander Blackett and Isabella Turnbull, was born in 1840 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, died on 8 Aug 1901 in Grong Grong, NSW, Australia at age 61, and was buried on 9 Aug 1901 in Grong Grong Cemetery, Grong Grong NSW. The cause of his death was Suicide - Strychnine self administration. Death Notes: 10286/1901 BLACKETT JOHN T NARRANDERA Burial Notes: NSW Death Certificate 1901/010286 General Notes: John Turnbull Blackett of wsa born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England. The only likely marriage of a Blackett to a Turnbull in the Newcastle area that we have found is that of Alexander Blackett (1807-1879) to Jane Turnbull in 1830. However, Jane died in October 1839, presumably giving birth to her daughter, Jane Turnbull Blackett. No entry for a birth or baptism has been found for John Turnbull Blackett, but it is possible that he was given up for informal adoption by his father and reverted back to his name at birth at a later stage. Another real possibility is that he was an illegitimate child of death 1901 Alexander and Isabella Turnbull, sister of Jane, about whom nothing is known other than (1901) her baptism.

John immigrated to Victoria in 1856 at the age of 16, he stayed there for 17 years before moving into the Grong Grong district when he was 33 years old. He was 38 years old when he married the widow Sarah Jones who was 34 years old and had at least four young children ranging from 12 to 1 year of age. It is unclear if the children were with Sarah. An article covering the death from alcoholism of her first husband Benjamin Jones indicated that the children were sent to Benevolent Institutions but here eldest son Ben went on to be successful in the district

John and Sarah then had two set of twins, Mary and John in 1879 (John did not survive) and John and Richard in 1881. Sarah then died in 1883 aged 39 years, likely in child birth.

This left John 43 years with a farm and a family of at least 3 young babies. One expects he had to get assistance looking after the family and farm.

John Turnbull Blackett died in Grong Grong, New South Wales, Australia on 8 August 1901. His death certificate shows him as aged 61, born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, his parents' surnames as Blackett and Turnbull, and states that he had lived in New South Wales for 28 years and Victoria for 17 years. It also notes that he died from self administered poisoning.

Interestingly records show another John Turnbull Blackett born at Newcastle on Tyne who enlisted in the AIF on 22 May 1916 he was aged 34yrs 2 months. A relative?

Sarah Anne Speed born 1844 in the UK 1851 Census she was 7 years old and living with her older sister Grace Dewsnap, it is fairly clearly her parents had died and her sister Grace and her husband Peter had taken them in.

6 years later the family immigrated onboard the 'Negotiator' a ship of 587 tons built in 1848, they arrived in June 1857 at Melbourne, Victoria where Peter Dewsnap was to be a station master on the Victorian railways. The Dewsnap's were recorded as Dewmap on the ships manifest. All were unassisted immigrants. The family included Peter Dewsnap 28yrs, Grace Dewsnap 27yrs, John Joseph Dewsnap 3yrs, Ann Dewsnap 1yr, Josiah Speed 14 yrs and Sarah Ann Speed 12yrs. It is clear then that Sarah's brother Samuel Speed now 18 years of age remained behind in England.

Peter Dewsnap initial was Station Master at Geelong before moving to Footscray in Melbourne, he also spent time in Wangarratta. The growth of the railways throughout Victoria and New South Wales was an economic boom to the farming communities and many worked on either building the railway or supporting it in many ways.

Sarah married Benjamin Jones at Deniliquin, NSW in 1865 when she was 21 years old, they then had at least four children Ben 1866, William 1873, Joseph 1875 and Martha 1877. Ben was a teamster but 12 years after their marriage they were running a boarding house in Wagga Wagga and Ben Jones was a firm alcoholic. Sarah she left him in November 1877 taking her youngest Martha with her to friends / family in Victoria, probably her sister Grace.

Benjamin Jones drank himself to death shortly afterwards passing in the early morning of 17 Dec 1877. He was found by a boarder and his daughter (this is probably Sarah for whom we don't have birth records but she married Alexander Chapman in 1905 and died in 1946).

After Benjamin's death Sarah married John Turnbull Blacket in 1878 she was 34 years old. Did she have her children from Benjamin Jones with her? Likely the youngest but the others may have been with other families in the district. Certainly her eldest son Ben went on the be well known as a transporter in the district.

With John Blackett, Sarah has twins Mary and John in 1879 (John didn't survive) and then more twins John and Richard in 1881.

She then died in 1883 she was 39 years old.... possibly in child birth? Her NSW death record shows her father as Samuel. But her sisters Grace Dewsnap shows David Speed and Ann Hardstaff. Perhaps John Blackett got it wrong and incorrectly referenced her older brother Samuel who died in Sheffield in 1875

Your first child Lawrence was born on 24 July 1938 followed three years later by Gloria on 9 November 1941. Shortly after Gloria's birth Esma and the children moved back to the Blackett family farm while Ned went to Tocumwall to work during the war.

In 1945 the family moved to Boundary Rd Narrandera where Ned ran a air cargo transport business delivering to local businesses and farms from Wagga Wagga airport. Rex was born at Narrandera on Christmas Day 1946.

In 1949 the family moved again, this time to a store and cafe they built at Forest Hill near the RAAF Base. A year later Garry was born in 1950. During this time Esma struggled with a young family and cooking and serving in the store. After a few years Ned sold the store and the family moved into Wagga Wagga 1954 where Ned worked at the PDF and later as an Estate Agent before finally settling into business again when he bought his first barbers shop.

Ned wasn't one to stay in one place for long, and in 1956 moved to Sydney living initially in Cronulla then Carringbah, 9 Kanangur ave Gymea and then Paris Place, Miranda. Ned ran barber shops at Gymea and lastly Jannalli. During this period one by one all four children married and left home.

Esma's first of eleven grandchildren was born in 1960. In 1972 Esma and Ned retired to Port Macquarie where they purchased a block of holiday units. After just 2 years they again moved back to Liverpool in August of 1974. Just three months later Ned passed away.

Esma then moved to Ulladulla to be close to Gloria. There she met (with help from Gloria and Hermoine) and married Herman Peters. Later they moved to Wagga Wagga close to his family and her sister. Herman passed in xxxx and Esma moved to Condobillan to be close to Gloria. The family all celebrated her 80th Birthday near Wagga Wagga with a party where Esma danced and partied. She passed away in her sleep a short while later at her home in Condobillan.

First they lived at Cronulla renting a house, and then to Caringbah near the hospital. A couple of years later to Gymea and then to Paris Place in Miranda. Ted ran a Barber shop at Jannali.

Gloria meet Barrie at a dance in Rockdale when she was 15 years old shortly after arriving in Sydney and they were married at the Anglican Church in Cronulla (the Elephant House) when she was 17 years old on 27 June 1959. Gloria and Barrie had three children, Michael (1960) Kerry (1962) and Garry (1965).

Gloria separated from Barrie in 1970 moving to Junee with Michael, Kerry and Garry to work as a housekeeper for Stan Curran at Amaroo, Old Junee. Gloria returned to Kirrawee in Sydney with Harold Peters in 1972 living on Forest Rd near Kirawee High School for a short while before moving to Oak Rd above the Toy stoy run by her good friend June.

They then moved in Aug 1973 to Ulladulla on the NSW south coast living in a Caravan behind Harold's sisters' property before moving to 27 Kendall Cres Burill Lake. In 1978 they moved to Powell Avenue in Ulladulla and got married and then after Dean's birth they moved into the house they built at Dowling Street in Ulladulla.

A couple of years after Harold's death in 1984 Gloria sold the house to Harold's son Mick, married Harold's ex wifes ex husband Arthur Rogers and moved to the caravan park at Shoalhaven Heads in 1986. A few years later they moved out to Trundle to be near her daughter Kerry. They lived at 11 West St Trundle where Arthur died in 1991.

Later that year Gloria married George Earle. When Kerry and her family moved back to Greenwell Point, Gloria and George moved to Condobolin, where she was joined by her mother Esma in 1994 after her second husband Herman passed away. Esma also passed while living in Condobolin in 1999 shortly after her 80th birthday. Through out this time personal faith in the Lord Jesus and her church family were a great source of strength and comfort.

Shortly after her mothers passing, Gloria and George moved up to the Currumbin Valley to live in a caravan on her son's Garry's property. This was a time of great joy for Gloria as she was able to spend a great deal of time with her grandchildren Brandon and Millie. George passed on 7 Jan 2009 after a battle with bowel cancer. Gloria then moved in with her brother Rex and his wife Marlene at Forster Keys on the NSW North Coast.

Here she met Paul Welch and they were married in 2010. Gloria suffered from poor health enduring shoulder and hip replacements and lung problems from many years as a smoker. In 2013 after a bout of pneumonia she contracted MRSA and took a long time to recover. A year later just after Christmas 2014 she caught the flu which quickly deteriotated and
