General statement on the school engagements from our founder member, Ted Hand

The support from Magor Church in Wales School & Undy Primary School has been absolute for the opening of Magor & Undy Walkway Station. They see it as their future. The station would provide an alternative solution to car and pollution. Also help to get people active by walking and cycling. This would be in line with one of Welsh Government’s flagship policy for Active Travel. The staff and pupils of the schools eco councils believe the walkway station concept should be a blueprint for a lot of new stations in the future. Walkway, parkway stations integrated with other modes of public transport would form ‘the ideal holistic’ model for public transport. The MAGOR group holds regular meetings with both schools to keep them updated on the progress of the project. MAGOR has run a number of competitions over the years. Examples being- name the locomotive and driver on the MAGOR logo. In conjunction with GWR ran a competition for pupils to write a short story or draw a picture (for younger pupils) on the GWR advertising campaign theme ‘The Famous Five’ by Enid Blyton. The winner of the story writing was taken by GWR to a book-writers event to receive the prize. The winning story was then published. The winners of the pictures competition were presented with the prizes at a school presentation event by Peter Fox OBE, Leader of Monmouthshire County Council and GWR officials. Further events had been planned for this year, but due to the Covid 19 crisis have had to be postponed. An event planned for May of this year, was a walk to school day.

In 2019 we have engaged with Rogiet Primary School. The school, although two and a half miles from Magor with Undy, would receive a massive benefit from the opening of Magor & Undy Walkway Station. The school is situated on a dead- end street that leads to Severn Tunnel Junction Station. The school is passed each year by 120,000 vehicles going up and down to and from Severn Tunnel Junction Station. This equates to 240,000 car movements past the school annually. From the numerous surveys carried out by our sister group STAG (Severn Tunnel Action Group). The annual number of Severn Tunnel Junction passengers originating from Magor with Undy is 40,000 (30%). The staff and pupils of Rogiet see the opportunity and benefit opening Magor & Undy Walkway Station would bring to their community and school. The benefit would be the potential to reduce up to 80,000 vehicles movements per annum, past the front of their school, along Station Road, Rogiet. The school children understand that the opening of Magor & Undy Walkway Station has the potential to significantly reduce car pollution around their school. The views of Rogiet Primary School are shared and endorsed by Rogiet Community Council.
