SOL organised an international (vrtual) conference on ‘Globalisation of Professional Legal Education: Constitutional Conspectus’ on April 3, 2021, under the leadership of its Dean, Prof. (Dr.) Nuzhat Parveen Khan and Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Prabhu Aggarwal. Dr. Garima Tiwari, the conference convenor, conceptualised and organised this conference which deliberated on India’s New Education Policy 2020 and its globalising effects on legal education. The conference was inaugurated by Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Hon'ble Minister of Law and Justice, Communications, Electronics & Inaugural Session of the International Conference IT, Government of India. In addition, the inaugural panel included Mr. S. Prabakaran, Senior Advocate and Co- Chairman, Bar Council of India; and Dr. Leena Chandran Wadia, Member, Drafting Committee of the Draft National Education Policy 2019. January 4: The Centre for Social Sciences, School of Law, organised its 1st guest lecture on the topic ‘Debunking Myths about North-East India’ delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Phirmi Bodo, Assistant Professor, Centre for Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University.

January 21: School of Law (SOL) hosted its 13th Socratic Lecture on January 21, 2021. The lecture was delivered by the expert speaker Mr. Parvatheesam Kanchinadham, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary, Tata Steel on the topic ‘Corporate Governance Mechanisms in India and their Effectiveness’.

January 29: A special lecture on ‘Trademarks and Copyrights’ was organized by the Centre for Law, Technology & Innovation (CLTI), SOL. The lecture on ’Regulatory Framework for Fantasy Sports’ was delivered by Mr. Saurabh Nandrekar, Managing Associate, Fidus Law Chambers.

January 29: Students and faculty of Legal Aid Clinic, SOL, Bennett University participated in the Student Workshop on ‘Law Clinics’ organised by the Law Clinic of University of Bristol, UK on January 29, 2021. The participating universities of the workshop included University of Bristol UK, Bar Ilan University, Israel, University of Bristol Law Clinic, UK, Nottingham Trent University, UK and Universidad de Alcalá, Spain. SOL Students, Aakaansha Arya and Kush Aryan Gupta along with faculty Dr. Garima Tiwari participated in the workshop.

February 12: School of Law organized a special lecture on ‘Anti-Defection Laws in India: A Critical Analysis’ to discuss and deliberate on the key aspects relating to ‘Law and Politics’. To discuss the genesis of ‘Anti- Defection Law in India’, Mr. Ravindra Garimella, Former Joint Secretary (Legislation) at Lok Sabha Secretariat, Parliament of India was invited who delivered a two-hour lecture on the topic. The program was organized under the head of 'Constitution @70'. The chair for this special lecture was Prof. (Dr.) Nuzhat Parveen Khan and the moderator of the program was Dr. Daksha Sharma.

February 13: Dr. Neilesh Bose, Associate Professor & Tier 2 Canada Research Chair, Global and Comparative History, University of Victoria, B.B.A. LL.B. (H) student, Kush Aryan Victoria, BC, Canada, delivered an insightful lecture on the topic ‘South Gupta participating in the workshop on Asian Migrations in Global History: Legal Frameworks and New Directions’. ‘Law Clinics’ by University of Bristol The lecture had an interdisciplinary approach since it covers various subjects such as anthropology, law, political science, and history.

February 26: School of Law organized a special lecture on ‘Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act’ on February 26, 2021. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Vageshwari Deswal, Professor at Faculty of Law, Delhi University. The special lecture was organized to participate in the U.P. State Council for Higher Education campaign for safety and self-respect and women empowerment as a special drive for 'Mission Shakti'. Dr. Vageshwari Deswal (L) during her special lecture on POCSO Act March 20: School of Law, Legal Aid Clinics’ Committee organized a special lecture on ‘Theatre as an Art Form for Creating Awareness’. The lecture was delivered by Dr Dinesh Yadav, Assistant Professor, Lighting design/ technical director, Theatre and Dance, University of Wisconsin, WI, USA. The objective of this event was to emphasize the significant role of theatre as an effective tool to create awareness along with learning a few nuances of theatre.

April 16: School of Law organized a special lecture on ‘Constitutional Values’ delivered by Prof. Dr. Pradeep Kulshrestha, Dean, School of Law, , . The event was hosted under the head of ‘Constitution @70’. The purpose of the lecture was to discuss about the constitutional values relating to justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. The speaker significantly covered the constitutional values and relevant judgments of the Supreme Court of India encompassing the same.

April 17: As part of the subject of Professional Ethics, a two-hour lecture on ‘Professional Ethics for Criminal Lawyer’ was delivered by Mr. M.F. Philip, Advocate, Supreme Court, New Delhi.

April 24: School of Law organized a special lecture on ‘Writ Jurisdiction of the Constitutional Courts: A Critical Analysis’ by Adv. Salman Khurshid, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Former Minister, Ministry of Law and Justice and Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The lecture focused on the writ jurisdiction of the constitutional courts under Art. 32 and 226 of the constitution of India.

June 25: SOL Internship and Placement committee organised a special lecture on 'CV Building and Career Prospects'. The guest speaker was Adv. Tariq Khan, specializing in international and domestic arbitrations.

June 26: SOL Internship and Placement committee organised a special lecture on ‘Arbitration in the Resolution of Environmental Law Disputes’. The event was attended by all law students at SOL. The guest speaker was Ms. Arushi Malik Naushad.

June 29: SOL invited Dr Mohd Yasin Wani, Assistant Professor, School of Law, University of Kashmir to deliver special lecture on ‘Quasi-Contracts’.

Webinars and Workshops

April 23-25: Training Program on ‘Basic Principles of Disaster Management'

The Centre for Sustainable Development and Disaster Studies (CSDDS), SOL, organised a three-day training program from April 23, 2020 – April 25, 2020 on ‘Basic Principles of Disaster Management’ in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management (MHA), New Delhi. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Prabhu Agarwal; Maj. Gen. Manoj K. Bindal, Executive Director, NIDM; Lt. Col. D C Vashista, Joint Director, NIDM and Prof. (Dr.) Nuzhat Parveen Khan, Dean, School of Law. Brig. Vinod Dutta, Former Sr. Consultant, NIDM; Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Dr. V. K. Naik KC, AVSM Senior Consultant NDMA; Lt. Col. D. C. Vashista, Joint Director, NIDM and Dr. Priya Sondhi, Associate Professor, Bennett University were the resource persons. The

6 7 program covered important concepts of risk, vulnerability, hazard, disaster-preparedness, resilience, disaster mitigation, legal regime for disaster management to list a few.

February 1-11: SOL organized a mediation workshop on ‘Navigating the Mediation Landscape: Essential Strategies’ in two phases, from Feb 1, 2021 - Feb 11, 2021. Advocate Iram Majid was invited to conduct the workshop. She is the Executive Director of Asia Pacific Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (APCAM) and empaneled as a mediator with the Global Panel of United Nations Development Program of Ombudsman as well as with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

February 24: The Centre for Sustainable Development and Disaster Studies, SOL, organised a collaborative webinar on ‘Management of Crowd at large Congregations’ with NIDM, New Delhi. The webinar started with welcome note by Prof. (Dr.) Nuzhat Parveen, Dean School of Law. She talked about the importance of crowd management in today’s world and its significance in India – A country of celebrations. Col. Supanekar, Professor and Director, Centre for Disaster Management, YASHADA, Pune, elaborately spoke about the disaster management plan of Kumbh Mela. He explained the planning preparation and conduct of Kumbh mela in a simple and lucid manner. Dr. Priya A. Sondhi, Associate Professor, Bennett University, explained the law, policy and judicial perspectives about disaster management. The participants asked questions about the use of AI in Kumbh Management, Kumbh management financing, career in disaster management, difference between event management and crowd management etc.

March 12: As per the guidelines received from the Registrar's office on the notification from U.P. State Council to mark the celebration of 75 Years of India's Independence, School of Law organised a webinar ^Hkkjrh; Lora=rk la?k"kZ*. The speaker panel included Dr. Sudha Jha Pathak, Assistant Professor,History, School of Law and Dr.Oly Roy, Assistant Professor, History, School of Law.

April 17: Literary and Debating Committee, SOL, organized a workshop on ‘Asian Parliamentary Debate’. The guest speaker Mr. Shayak Chakraborty, Advocate Calcutta High Court discussed the roles of all speakers in the debate in detail with a special focus on procedures.

7 Cornell Week

Three professors from Cornell Law School — Prof. Elizabeth Brundige, Prof. Andrea J. Mooney, and Prof. Dan Awrey delivered online lectures to the registered students of their respective courses of single credit each. The students’ registration was called from I year and II year law Programs. Prof. Elizabeth Brundige, Clinical Professor of Law, taught ‘International Human Rights in Theory and Practice’. Prof. Andrea J. Mooney, Clinical Professor of Lawyering Program and Clinical Program, taught the course on ‘Legal Writing’ and Prof. Dan Awrey, Professor of Law, taught ‘The Principles of Financial Regulation’.

Pro-Bono Week 3.0

The 3rd edition of the Pro Bono Week (virtual) was held from 22-26 February , 2021. Pro-Bono week is conducted every year in the month of February by the School of Law where various events and activities related to legal aid within and outside the college are conducted. The idea is to have a week dedicated to legal aid centric activities and spread its importance within the college. This year, it was held online due to the ongoing pandemic. The clinic took this opportunity to expand its reach by conducting activities and events from homes. There were multiple events related to legal aid: interaction with house helps on the importance of marriage registration, online workshop for the workers and staff of Bennett University, client competition and panel discussion. A lecture was also conducted by Advocate Ajay Verma on Feb 22, 2021.

The session with the staff persons on the Bennett University campus targeted guards, sanitation workers and vendors among others. The aim was to create awareness amongst them about the topic ‘Right to Education’. A detailed presentation about various government schemes related to various educational opportunities were explained by the team.

Legal Aid Committee in collaboration with Advocate Ajay Verma, International Bridges to Justice conducted an online workshop on the importance and relevance of Legal Aid in today’s era. The speaker enlightened the students

8 by mentioning the crucial role of legal aid clinics and also what steps they could take as students and further he explained that how IBJ is following different approaches to provide legal aid services to prisoners, and he also stated that legal aid is not just limited to the actual professional legal work, but it also covers the areas in our daily life chores by telling our house workers about their rights. Moot Point

Bennett National Moot Court Competition

The 3rd Bennett National Moot Court Competition was organized by the moot court committee from February 5-7, 2021. Senior Advocate Shri Arvind Nayar spoke in the inauguration ceremony of the competition and lauded the attempt of the School of Law, Bennett University to initiate the competition during these pandemic times in virtual mode.

The competition was conducted over the period of 2 days with more than 25 teams participating from some of the best law schools of India. The final round of the competition was judged Valedictory Function of III BNMCC by the eminent jurists and immensely reputed personalities from the legal fraternity. It comprised Hon’ble Shri A.K. Sikri Sir, former Supreme Court Justice; Prof. (Dr.) B.T. Kaul ; and Sri Sidharth Luthra, Sr. Advocate, Supreme Court of India .

The valedictory ceremony was presided by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Bennett University with Hon’ble Justice Shri Augustine George Masih as the guest of honour. There were more than 36 judges to judge the rounds and around 80 participants.

1st Bennett Intra Faculty Moot Court Competition

Moot court committee, School of Law, organised its first intra faculty moot court competition.The event was being organised for the law students of Bennett University, School of Law from all batches specially the I year students to provide training for virtual and physical moot court competitions, to inculcate the desire to learn and participate in moot court competitions. One of the major objectives was to educate the I year students via practical application about memorial drafting/ court room ethics and to make them future ready.

• The team of Hitashi Bansal (III Year B.A.LL.B.), Venus Gupta (III Year B.A.LL.B.) & Nandini Shandilya (II Year B.A.LL.B.) emerged as winners at the 1st National Virtual Moot Court Competition organised by the Faculty of Law, . The competition was held from April 9-April 11, 2021. Amongst 42 teams, from various law colleges/ universities across the nation, School of Law, Bennett University secured 1st position. The moot problem was based on human rights and constitutional law.
