The promotion of the communities lifestyle in order to attract new residents to the community? To attract outside dollars to the community to support businesses within the community? To entertain the region? To diversify the tax base? To show off to the world? To provide entertainment opportunities for the citizens through special events? To promote the desired lifestyle of the citizens? 5/6/2014 5 Tourism vs. Service Sector • NOT deemed Tourism…Typical retail used by citizens of a community – Groceries, Restaurants, National tenants, clothiers, commercial centers, hair dressers, greenhouses…but deemed service sector. • Strathcona County businesses in the Service Sector benefit from inflow from other areas of the province (retail service and restaurant inflow varies between 10 and 30%) depending on the industry • People who come to Costco, Target, Superstore, Wal-Mart, Greenland, Salisbury spend money at other retail and service locations as well and are an attraction to the community 5/6/2014 6 Tourism in Alberta • $7.8 billion dollars spent by tourists in Alberta in 2011 • 86% of tourists in Alberta are from Alberta • 65% of tourism expenditures in Alberta come from Albertans • The majority of tourists in Alberta are Visiting Friends and Family (VFF) representing approximately 42% of all overnight visits in the province EDTAC 3/20/2014 7 Tourism in Edmonton & Region Edmonton Tourism (division of EEDC) • Edmonton Tourism promotes Greater Edmonton as the destination of choice for: – Tourism – Conventions – Major events – Film production • “Edmonton Tourism” is the Destination Marketing Organization that creates, implements, and evaluates tourism marketing initiatives for Greater Edmonton, working in conjunction with both public and private tourism industry partners. • Major initiatives include You’re Welcome Edmonton , Industry Partners , Edmonton Festival City , and Edmonton Film Office EDTAC 3/20/2014 8 Tourism in Edmonton Region Edmonton Regional Tourism Group (ERTG) • Partners include 30 municipal members from surrounding Edmonton (60 private members in the region) • Operates like a destination tourism operator (like Edmonton Tourism) promoting the Edmonton Countryside as a tourism destination via marketing of “Edmonton’s Countryside” • http://www.edmontonscountryside.com/ EDTAC 3/20/2014 9 Businesses Establishments 5/6/2014 10 Benefit of Visitors EDTAC 3/20/2014 11 Current Tourism Direction Corvus - Tourism Focus - It is recommended that EDT limit resource investment in tourism promotion to approximately 0.50 FTE’s; focusing on “outing” related promotion. It is recommended that EDT work with Edmonton Regional Tourism to refocus tourism activities in support of hamlets and rural areas of the County (ERTG does not provide these services) Reduce from 2.7 Staff on Tourism and Special Events to 0.5.
