Robert Karloh, President of the African Amputee Association, explains the importance of the game, not just for the players but for the community as a whole. Abstract - Aim: The purpose of the study was to assess upper limbs’ maximum power and locomotion speed among amputee football (amputee soccer) players. Methods: The 30-s Wingate Anaerobic test and the 20-m sprint test were performed. Anthropometric measurements and body composition (Body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (% BF), and lean body mass (LBM)) were examined. Results: BMI significantly differentiated forwards and defenders (p < 0.05). Peak power (PP) and mean power (MP) were related to LBM (p < 0.05), thus defenders reached higher values of PP, in comparison to forwards. % BF and BMI were related to relative mean power (rMP) (p < 0.05). Field position differentiated players in terms of upper limbs’ relative peak power (rPP) in favour of forwards (p < 0.05). Age was a significant factor for speed velocity on 10 m and 20 m (p < 0.05). There was no relationship between upper limbs’ power and locomotion speed. Conclusion: Body composition, especially % BF may influence on the anaerobic per- formance of amputee football players. Like all youngsters given the opportunity, they respond to a positive environment VISION and succeed. We want to promote upward mobility for our young participants. Methods: The following key words were used to identify proper articles: amputee soccer/football, lower limb amputation, amputeeʼs physical fitness, amputeeʼs field-based fitness test, and amputeeʼs fitness-test battery. A comprehensive search was conducted until November 2019 using electronic databases (MEDLINE, SPORTdiscus, CINAHL, Web ofScience, Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Google Scholar). Results: The original search netted 29 studies and after the removal of duplicates and screening, 17 studies remained. Based on previous studies, the following measurement items were selected as physical fitness tests adapted to amputee soccer outfield players and the measurement methods were organized. Anthropometric measurements included body height, body weight, and body composition. Muscular performance included balance, flexibility, muscular endurance and muscular strength. Anaerobic performance included sprint, agility, and jump. Several studies have evaluated the aerobic performance of outfield players by using aerobic tests developed for healthy individuals; however, the test has not been standardized. Conclusion: This pilot study reviewed and organized the physical fitness tests of amputee soccer players.

    Chapter 6 Disability as Embodied Memory? Questions of Identity for the Amputees of Sierra Leone. Maria Berghs Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Introduction The West African country of Sierra Leone suffered a decade-long civil war from 1991 to 2001. One of the features of that war was that all factions used amputation, primarily the Revolutionary United Front (R.U.F), affecting thousands of people (Richards, 1996). Amputation was an effective cultural weapon of war because it not only spread terror but it also deprived the enemy of the political and social capital of labor (Bourdieu, 1986, 1991). In Sierra Leonean rural culture, power is linked to who controls, exploits, and has access to young male and female laboring bodies (Richards, 1996, Ferme, 2001). Amputation was a violent protest by the youth at the injustice of a local cultural system that allowed a political elite to treat its youth as laboring dependents and slaves, but also acted as a means of inversing such a system by declassifying it (Durkheim, 1893, Lockwood, 1993), turning thousands of government supporters into dependents (Richards, 1996, Peters & Richards, 1998). The image of the amputee (man, woman, child) thus soon became symbolic of the atrocities and trauma of the war in both global and local discourses and media imagery. After the war ended, the nation building began with a ‘Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ (T.R.C) aimed at putting the painful past of war behind. Very much at the same moment the first problems with the symbolic images, identities, and positions of the amputees in Sierra Leone society began.
