PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Hello everyone, last week Sgt at Arms Moe arranged for our Chapter along with friends from a Veterans riding group, to take the additional donations to the veterans home in Pt. Charlotte. When we arrived we were given a ‘behind the scenes’ look, at the work that is necessary to provide our veterans with the best possible care they deserve. WOW…is all I can say. ‘Liz’ & the entire staff at Douglas T. Jacobson are dedicated to doing just that. After the tour, Liz presented Southwest Chapter with a Certificate of Appreciation for all the years of support, you’ll see it later on in this publication, she also presented our Chapter a book titled: “A Home for Heroes”, written by 2 former Resident Veterans, on Medal of Honor Recipient; Douglas T. Jacobson & history of the Veteran’s Home. The book will be available to membership to read if they wish. So let me say this; the donations that our brother Chapters, Veteran Riders Organizations & riding groups bring to this event, is so welcomed by the residents & staff alike…from all of them; Thank You for your support. Next, Secretary Heidi got all the plans for the April State Meeting lined up & secured, along with getting the required set-up arranged as well…thanks Heidi great work as always. The Freedom Ride is around the corner & this being the 20th Anniversary of the Helmet Law Modification, we hope to have a large turnout for the Parade to the Capitol & the Ceremony on the Capitol Steps, we’ll be sure to get pictures in our next newsletter along with our Delegates Report. Last week’s MSAP Certification went really well. We used the big room at the Library & certified two new Instructors & two former ones…now we just need to get back into the schools. Unfortunately we now share the time available in the High Schools with other organizations that present their programs. Maybe we should address putting our MSAP Presentations back in the Driver’s Ed classes through Legislation, as it has been suggested, we’ll see. State Safety Director Victor is also working on being able to use this room for future MSAP Certifications & presentations to other organizations & businesses alike, I’ll keep you informed. Moving on, this is an election year & things are heating up as our State Reps begin their work. Please pay close attention to ‘Calls to Actions’ & ‘things to watch’, there are some critical issues coming up in the next few weeks & some for the ballot in November that will affect us all in one way or another. Not to mention our Safety Money we so desperately need. Now, last year as in the start of this one, we’ve seen a rash of Crashes & Hit & Runs not only on motorcycles, but Cagers, bicyclist & pedestrians as well…if they don’t care about hitting another ‘Cager’ & leaving the scene of a crash with injuries…what makes us think they’ll care about running us over? We need to find a way to address this issue now. ABATE of Florida’s primary purposes are: Bikers Rights & Motorcycle Safety…that’s why we’re here! Every Member of Southwest Chapter should be able to discuss these issues with the facts, data & information available to us, including discussing our MSAP program. All the information we need, is posted on ABATE of Florida’s website & the FLHSMV website; it’s there for our use. No longer can we complain about something if we’re not willing to jump in & do something about it. We have all the tools we need, let’s put them to use… it could be your riding buddy’s life, you’ll be saving…better yet, yours. OK, that’s all I have for now. Watch our emails for other legislative information coming from ‘Scribe’ & ‘Teddy Bear’. Ride often, ride safe but more importantly... ride free. Robb

Legislative Report – February 2020 Good Morning Freedom Fighters,

Brace yourself. The 2020 presidential campaign that officially starts on Feb. 3 – when Iowans go to firehouses, schools churches and meeting halls to caucus for their choice to run for president of the United States – could well be one of the toughest and most rancorous contests in decades. Beyond the presidential sweepstakes, voters will have many decisions to make at the polls, during the primary season and again this fall. All 425 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 35 of 100 U.S. senators and 11 governors will be running, as well as thousands of state and local candidates around the country. But experts agree that, despite the old political adage that all politics is local, this is going to be an election year that is dominated by the presidential race. Down-ballot candidates will have to fight for attention. “If you like clean, positive, issue-oriented campaigns, you're going to be disappointed,” said Glen Bolger, a partner at Public Opinion Strategies, a leading Republican polling firm. “It's going to be rough and tumble.”

Celinda Lake, a veteran Democratic pollster, predicts that issues will only determine how 10 percent of voters make up their minds. About 40 percent of decisions will be based on character, and half of those who vote in the general election will cast their ballots based on party affiliation. After Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses come the New Hampshire primary on Feb. 11, then Nevada caucuses on Feb. 22 and the South Carolina primary on Feb 29. On March 3, Super Tuesday, 16 states and territories will vote. Not only will communications from both sides likely reflect the deep political division that permeate our nation, but the way candidates communicate to voters will be more personal and focused on platforms like Facebook, analysts say. “This is the first post-mass media election in which, for the first time in U.S. history, more significant amounts of money will be spent on social media and digital than on broadcast,” says Will Robinson, a Democratic consultant and founding partner of The New Media Firm. Robinson compares the transformation to that of the 1960 presidential battle between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. That election was the first one in which television was a major communication element. Kennedy understood the power of television, Robinson says, and many credit his performance in the first televised debate of that campaign as a key to his eventual victory.

Ever since, the 30-second television spot and fliers mailed to voters' homes have been the primary communications tool of state and national candidates. No more. Much of the reason for this shift to digital is practical: The traditional way of contacting voters just aren't working anymore. Broadcast television viewership is at an all-time low, Robinson says. And only 6 percent of Americans will complete phone surveys, leading to the potential demise of political phone banking, which is another longstanding mainstay of get-out-the-vote efforts. At the same time, people are more skeptical about answering their doors to talk to a candidate or volunteer canvasser about politics. Motorcyclists disproportionately care about issues that other voters might be overlooking, such as profiling, motorcycle safety and autonomous vehicles, just to name a few. For motorcyclists, what is the best way to be sure that the issues that you are concerned with are addressed? Show up. When candidates have forums, go to the forums. When candidates see bikers in the audience, they pay attention. And when bikers speak, politicians listen, because they know bikers have a high propensity to vote. This year, voter turnout is expected to be exceptionally high in November, and voters seem to be engaging in the political process much earlier than usual. During this election season, do your homework, talk to the candidates and then, vote like a motorcyclist. 'TEDDYBEAR'

From ABATE of Florida, Inc. - Darrin 'Scribe' Brooks Now that session has started, we need to reach out to the Appropriations Committee and help push through the Safety Money Bill HB 2007. Since this is a pretty big committee, you can just concentrate on those members that are in your area, but you are also welcome to contact each one of the members. Here is a sample that you can use in an email, just cut and paste into your email then fill in the blanks with your individual information

Rep. ______My name is ______, I am a member of ABATE of Florida, Inc. ______Chapter. HB 2007, Abate of Florida, Inc. Motorcycle Safety Awareness Program by Rep. McClain, final committee will soon be on the agenda

6 for the Appropriations Committee. Every year motorcyclist already pay an extra $2.50 fee that goes toward motorcycle safety awareness education for the public. HB 2007 would allow ABATE of Florida, Inc. to have a small percentage of "our" money back so that we can educate the public to be aware of motorcyclist. In the past when ABATE of Florida, Inc. did receive some of the safety money, motorcyclist deaths did drop in those years. Nobody can better educate the public on motorcycle awareness than a motorcyclist. When HB 2007 does get to the Appropriations Committee agenda, I would like to ask for your support and help pass HB 2007. Thank you, ______(your name)

Legislative Report – February 2020 – Continued…

Now that the Holidays are over and things are starting to get back to normal, we need to do another round of calling Rep. Brad Drakes office to request HB 455 be placed on the agenda for the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee. Rep. Brad Drake: E-mail - [email protected]; District Office phone - 1 (850) 951-0547, Capital Office phone - 1 (850) 717-5005. Just a quick call to say "My name is ______, I am calling to request that Rep. Drake please add HB 455 to the agenda of the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee."

That is all you have to say. If you call during office hours you will get the secretary or aide so be pleasant, quick and courteous. If you call after hours, you can just leave the same message on the voice mail. Call his office several times each week, we need to really flood his office with calls. Just a brief note about emailing the legislators, don't expect any acknowledgments from them. Sometimes you will get a "thank you" for emailing them, but most of the time you will not get any response. So do not feel bad if you do not get a response. I have received a few emails from you telling me that you sent the emails and I appreciate it when I get those emails. Thank you for all your help.

From the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Washington, D.C. As we move into the second half of the 116th Congress, we still have more work to do to advance our 2020 legislative priorities. With your help, we can make sure that Congress takes steps to help end the unfair profiling of motorcyclists around the country. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is working with the State Motorcycle Rights Organizations (SMRO), the National Council of Clubs (NCOC), the Motorcycle Profiling Project (MPP) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) on the passage of H.Res. 255.

Let's keep the momentum going and ask the U.S. House of Representatives to join their colleagues in the U.S. Senate to pass H.Res. 255. If you have answered our previous calls to action over the past year on motorcyclist profiling, please make sure you click the take action button for our updated profiling engagement! We currently have over 125 bipartisan cosponsors and we would like to increase that number to signal to Congress that this issue is still important to the bikers in America. If your representative is already a cosponsor, the system will send them a thank you on your behalf which also encourages them to ask their colleagues in the House of Representatives to join them.

TAKE ACTION NOW: Tell your Congressman that targeting a motorcyclist because of their clothes, cut or motorcycle is discriminatory and needs public attention. Urge him to support and co-sponsor H.Res. 255. See you in the wind, 'TEDDYBEAR'

Father Tom’s Message:

Dear Fellow ABATE Members,

Motorcycle Reaction Times and Reacting in Time for God Part 2

In March of 2006, we reported the following:

“The latest biker fatality reports from Daytona (mostly from Bike Week) are alarming and motorcycle accidents in Southwest Florida within the last few weeks seem to be on the rise, again. Within the last several weeks, a dear friend of ours was nearly taken out on Daniels Road by someone violating his right-of-way. One of our own Messiah’s Messengers received injuries and resulting surgery from another right-of-way violation.”

Here we are at the beginning of 2020 and we have lost more. It seems like human nature relating to driving/riding habits of many riders and cagers have not changed a whole lot. We still have a way to go, in learning what we 9

10

Father Tom’s Message Continued: could to avoid many perilous situations and lessen the opportunities of being involved in accidents. ABATE has the MSAP program, of which many members unselfishly give of their time to teach younger drivers of motorcycle awareness and sharing the road.

The main points published by ABATE of Florida on the MSAP website are:  Obey all traffic laws, signs & signals  Constantly check and expect to see motorcycles  Motorcycles are smaller than cars or trucks and it can be more difficult to judge their approaching speed  Look, look, & look again at traffic intersections before you turn or pull out  Allow a three second “Space Cushion” when following a motorcycle  There are 7 to 9 blind spots in an average vehicle  Give Motorcycles the same respect and courtesy that you want for yourself and other motorists https://www.abateflorida.com/safety_opening.php Immediately, our minds go to several areas that seem to be common sense for riders. They all revolve about being able to have time to react to various situations. They are:

 Don’t follow too close. Drivers of the cage sometimes seem to slow down for no apparent reason. Sometimes the person in front of that driver does the same thing and/or there could be a situation that requires immediate braking. Give yourself some reaction time. If the person behind you is too close, allow for that person to pass you. I usually will hold my hand out to ask that person to back off. If another lane is open to the left or right, I’ll pull over and let them pass. It makes no difference if we are in the right and they are in the wrong. They can easily kill or maim you with their size.  Don’t ride too fast for road and/or traffic conditions. It’s better to be able to have reaction time than not arrive at your destination at all.  If you can safely stop, don’t push that yellow traffic light at the intersection. And, if your light is now turning green, don’t push it on the start as there may be an impatient and/or selfish cager who is going to push through the end of the yellow and/or just decide to run the red light. Give yourself time to react.  Drinking and riding will kill reaction times and judgment. Enough said.

We cannot predict if you will ever have a collision on your motorcycle. However, we can predict that you will definitely have a collision with eternity. What have you done with the time that God is giving you to react with this eventuality?

The scriptures tell us that God could come for us at any time and take us away into eternity. Can we honestly say that we have reacted in time for God? Are we prepared for His return? Ask yourself the question, “If God was to return for me today, would I absolutely be sure that I would enter into His kingdom?”

Revelation 3:20 says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” Will you let Him come in? Please pray, "Dear God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of Jesus, my heavenly Father, I confess that I am a sinner and have been separated from You. I ask forgiveness of my sins. I repent and accept this gift of repentance and I wish to be free in you. I confess with my mouth that your son Jesus is my savior and died for me. I believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead. I receive Jesus into my heart and ask Him to become the center of my life. I ask, in the Name of Jesus. Amen."

If you wish to contact us, to talk about your decision for Him, please email, text, or call. If you wish us to help with prayer for you, loved ones, friends or others, let us know.

Blessings, Pastor Tom (SW ABATE Chaplain and Life Member and Estero River ABATE Life Member) and Chaplain Kathy (SW ABATE Life Member) - 239-770-3564 or email: [email protected]
