Although these features may provide useful diagnostics of the LCDM model, their observational properties remain poorly constrained. In this work, we aim to study systematically the frequency of occurrence and other observational properties of tidal features around nearby galaxies. -

1 NGC 4651: The Umbrella Galaxy is a mere 62 million light-years distant, toward the well-groomed northern constellation Coma Berenices. About the size of our Milky Way, this island universe is seen to have a faint umbrella-shaped structure that seems to extend (left) some 100 thousand light-years beyond the bright galactic disk. The giant cosmic umbrella is now known to be composed of tidal star streams - extensive trails of stars gravitationally stripped from a smaller satellite galaxy. The small galaxy was eventually torn apart in repeated encounters as it swept back and forth on eccentric orbits through NGC 4651. In fact, the picture insert zooms in on the smaller galaxy's remnant core, identified in an extensive exploration of the system, using data from the large Subaru and Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea. Work begun by a remarkable collaboration of amateur and professional astronomers to image faint structures around bright galaxies suggests that even in nearby galaxies, tidal star streams are common markers of such galactic mergers. The result is explained by models of galaxy formation that also apply to our own Milky Way.4651 2 Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 is a mere 35 million light-years distant, toward the well- groomed constellation Coma Berenices. About 50 thousand light-years across, this galaxy is seen to have a faint umbrella-shaped structure (right) that seems to extend some 50 thousand light-years farther, beyond the bright galactic disk. The giant cosmic umbrella is now known to be composed of tidal star streams. The streams themselves are extensive trails of stars gravitationally stripped from a smaller satellite galaxy that was eventually torn apart. -

Tennant2, and Roberto Soria3 Submitted to Astrophysical Journal ABSTRACT Maps of low-inclination nearby galaxies in Sloan Digitized Sky Survey u − g, g − r and r − i colors are used to determine whether Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are predominantly associated with star-forming regions of their host galaxies. An empirical selection criterion is derived from colors of H ii regions in M 81 and M 101 that differentiates between the young, blue stellar component and the older disk and bulge population. This criterion is applied to a sample of 58 galaxies of Hubble type S0 and later and verified through an application of Fisher’s linear discriminant analysis. It is found that 60% (49%) of ULXs in optically-bright environments are within regions blueward of their host galaxy’s H ii regions compared to only 27% (0%) of a control sample according to the empirical (Fisher) criterion. This is an excess of 3σ above the 32% (27%) expected if the ULXs were randomly distributed within their galactic hosts. This indicates a ULX preference for young, ∼<10 Myr, OB associations. However, none of the ULX environments have the morphology and optical brightness suggestive of a massive young super star cluster though several are in extended or crowded star-forming (blue) environments that may contain clusters unresolved by Sloan imaging. Ten of the 12 ULX candidates with estimated X-ray luminosities in excess of 3×1039 ergs s−1 are equally divided among the group of ULX environments redward of H ii regions and the group of optically faint regions. -

Filippenko3 Received 2007 January 2; accepted 2007 February 14 ABSTRACT Direct identification of the progenitors of supernovae (SNe) is rare because of the required spatial resolution and depth of the archival data prior to the SN explosions. Here we report on the identification of the progenitors of two nearby SNe in the Virgo Cluster: SN 2006my in NGC 4651 and SN 2006ov in M61. We obtained high-quality ground-based images of SN 2006my with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, and are able to locate the site of the SN on pre-SN Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images to a high precision (1 uncer- tainty of Æ0.0500). We pinpoint the site of SN 2006ov to within 0.0200 from HSTAdvanced Camera for Surveys images of the SN. We detected a red supergiant progenitor for each SN within the error circles, with an inferred zero-age main- sequence mass (M )of10þ5 and 15þ5 M for the progenitors of SNe 2006my and 2006ov, respectively. The mass zams À3 À3 estimates for the progenitors of both SNe confirm a suggested trend that the most common Type IIYplateau SNe Y originate from low-mass supergiants with Mzams 8 20 M . -

Koribalski CSIRO Astronomy & Space Science, Australia Telescope National Facility, PO Box 76, Epping, NSW 1710, Australia Email: [email protected] Abstract: Here I will outline successes and challenges for finding spectral line sources in large data cubes that are dominated by noise. This is a 3D challenge as the sources we wish to catalog are spread over several spatial pixels and spectral channels. While 2D searches can be applied, e.g. channel by channel, optimal searches take into account the 3-dimensional nature of the sources. In this overview I will focus on HI 21-cm spectral line source detection in extragalactic surveys, in particular HIPASS, the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey and WALLABY, the ASKAP HI All-Sky Survey. I use the original HIPASS data to highlight the diversity of spectral signatures of galaxies and gaseous clouds, both in emission and absorption. Among others, I report the À1 discovery of a 680 km s wide HI absorption trough in the megamaser galaxy NGC 5793. Issues such as source confusion and baseline ripples, typically encountered in single-dish HI surveys, are much reduced in interferometric HI surveys. Several large HI emission and absorption surveys are planned for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP): here we focus on WALLABY, the 21-cm survey of the sky (d , þ308; z , 0.26) which will take about one year of observing time with ASKAP. -

Weaver4 Received 2003 June 26; accepted 2003 December 22 ABSTRACT We present arcsecond resolution Chandra X-ray and ground-based optical H imaging of a sample of 10 edge-on star-forming disk galaxies (seven starburst and three ‘‘normal’’ spiral galaxies), a sample that covers the full range of star formation intensity found in disk galaxies. The X-ray observations make use of the unprec- edented spatial resolution of the Chandra X-ray observatory to more robustly than before remove X-ray emission from point sources and hence obtain the X-ray properties of the diffuse thermal emission alone. We have combined the X-ray observations with existing, comparable-resolution, ground-based H and R-band imaging and present a mini-atlas of images on a common spatial and surface brightness scale to aid cross- comparison. In general, the morphology of the extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission is very similar to the extraplanar H filaments and arcs, on both small and large scales (scales of tens of parsecs and kiloparsecs, respectively). The most spectacular cases of this are found in NGC 1482 (for which we provide the first published X-ray observation) and NGC 3079. -

The data we use consist of stellar light profiles, atomic and molecular gas (deduced from CO with a metallicity-dependent conversion factor), star formation rates (from Ha emissivities), metal- licities, dispersion velocities and rotation curves. We show that the Toomre criterion applies successfully to the case of the Milky Way disc, but it has limited success with the data of our sample; depending on whether or not the stellar component is included in the stability analysis, we find average values for the threshold ratio of the gas surface density to the critical surface density in the range 0.5-0.7. We also test various star formation laws proposed in the literature, i.e. either the simple Schmidt law or modifications of it, that take into account dynamical fac- tors. -

Received 1998 June 1; in original form 1997 December 30 Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/302/2/209/968033 by guest on 30 September 2021 ABSTRACT For a magnitude-limited optical sample (BT # 13:5 mag) of early-type galaxies, we have derived X-ray luminosities from the ROSATAll-Sky Survey. The results are 101 detections and 192 useful upper limits in the range from 1036 to 1044 erg s1. For most of the galaxies no X-ray data have been available until now. On the basis of this sample with its full sky coverage, we ®nd no galaxy with an unusually low ¯ux from discrete emitters. Below log LB < 9:2L( the X-ray emission is compatible with being entirely due to discrete sources. Above log LB < 11:2L( no galaxy with only discrete emission is found. We further con®rm earlier ®ndings that Lx is strongly correlated with LB. Over the entire data range the slope is found to be 2:23 60:12. We also ®nd a luminosity dependence of this correlation. Below 1 log Lx 40:5 erg s it is consistent with a slope of 1, as expected from discrete emission.
