The visit kicked off with a tour around CRC SGH clinical (Level 4) and administrative (Level 5) facilities in the new CRC building. The tour was followed by the NIH Seminar which was conducted in the CRC auditorium located at the same building. The theme of the seminar was “Research Opportunities in NIH, Ministry of Health (MoH)”. A total of 175 delegates from MoH and research institutions across Sarawak participated in the seminar. Deputy State Health Director of Sarawak, Dr Kamaludin Lajim welcomed DDG, the NIH team and all the delegates to the seminar. Representative from each NIH institution gave an overview of their respective institution and shared on their research capabilities. Both Dr Ooi Mong How (Consultant Paediatrician SGH) and Dr Lawrence Anchah (Chief Pharmacist Sarawak Heart Center) shared on their research experiences in the field paediatrics and cardiology, respectively. Head of hospital CRC in Sarawak, namely CRC SGH, CRC Hospital Sibu and CRC Hospital Miri had a short sharing session on the research highlights from their respective CRC. The seminar ended with a fruitful forum moderated by Dr S Asmaliza Ismail with the DDG and all the NIH directors as panellists. Group photos for the DDG-NIH visit to CRC SGH 9th Sarawak State Health Department Research Day 22-23rd August in Meritz Hotel, Miri By Teng Leh Hong Admin Manager, CRC Hospital Miri It was of great privilege for Clinical Research Centre Miri Hospital to organise the 9th Sarawak State Health Department Research Day on 22nd-23rd August 2017 at Meritz Hotel, Miri. The theme was “Get Engaged with Clinical Research 2.0”. The annual event was graced by the honourable YB Dr. Haji Annuar Bin Rapaee (Menteri Muda Di Pejabat Ketua Menteri, Penyelidikan Sains Dan Bioteknologi) together with Dr. Jamilah Binti Hashim (Director, Sarawak State Health Department), Dr. Goh Pik Pin (Director of National Clinical Research Centre), Dr Khairul Faizi Khalid (Head of Business Development, Clinical Research Malaysia) and Deputy State Health Directors. Four pre-research workshops were held on 22nd August 2017 from 2pm-5pm and registered 97 participants. Mr Allen Ang B.K. (Toastmaster, Brunei) delivered the workshop on Public Speaking & Presentation Skill. Research Methodology workshop was conducted by Dr Marilyn Umar. The Herbal Medicine workshop was led by Dr Ami Fazlin Syed Mohamed and her 3 team members from IMR. Both Professor Madya Dr. Zafar Ahmed & Dr Diana Jawa were the speakers for the Health Economics Workshop. 3 Events A total of 69 abstracts were received. The submissions were from public institutions all across Sarawak, including hospitals, public health clinics, dental clinics, JKN Sarawak as we11 as UNIMAS. 30 abstracts were shortlisted for oral presentation competition, while the others were displayed as e-poster. A total of 117 participants attended the event on 23rd August 2017.We were very honoured to have Adjunct Professor Dr Toh Teck Hock (chief judge), Adjunct Professor Dr Ngian Hie Ung, Dr Koh Keng Hee, Dr Marilyn Umar, Dr Veronica Lugah, Dr Ami Fazlin Syed Mohamed and Dr Lawrence Anchah as judges for the oral presentation competition. The 30-oral presentations consisted of 7 case reports, 8 clinical observational studies, 8 Epidemiology studies and 7 interventional/validation studies. 3 prizes were awarded to each category & one prize for the best presenter. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM) for their presence and sponsoring of gifts for the competition. We would also like to congratulate all the winners and participants who participated in this event. Under this collaboration, a total of six master and undergraduate students from Duke University had successfully completed their summer research programme (from June to August 2017) in Sibu Hospital. This programme is to facilitate the studies with One Health team from Duke University and Duke Kunshan University to identify the risk factor of zoonotic infectious disease transmission among animal, human and environment in Sarawak, specifically in Sibu and Kapit. These include three different studies namely; Norovirus infection in acute diarrheal patients, Novel respiratory viruses in animal worker and environment, and a year-long study of surveillance for novel viral respiratory infections among patients hospitalized with pneumonia in Sarawak.
