The ethics as well as the love at that core are sorely tested in This is one of Davis' darkest books, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the high summer of AD 77, laid-back detective Marcus Didius Falco is called upon to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a middle-aged couple who supplied statues to Falco's father, Geminus. In recent years it felt as if this entertaining series of historical detectives was tapering off slowly, as Falco's travels to various historical spots in the Empire were insufficient compensation for plot patterns that became a bit stale. Human Values are those which give expression to the highest qualities of human life. Falco, his wife Helena Justina, his friend Petro, and his adopted daughter, Albia. The daughter of a journalist, Elsa was born in Rome and spent much of her childhood abroad, attending international schools in Moscow and Prague. When Falco goes to tell his father he finds that he too has just died leaving Falco as his heir. Hardcover , pages. The last Falco novel, Nemesis, exists entirely to wrap up loose ends and set up for the spinoff series about Albia. In all of this I am well-served once again by this book, the twentieth and last? In the course of the renovations, the grounds are excavated and bones are uncovered. Retrieve credentials. Among a cast of delicious characters, one of the most vivid is Rome itself. The leads are entertaining, but the resolution isn't one of Davis's best. Also, his contracting firm has been renovating a rundown dive bar called The Garden of the Hesperides, only to uncover human remains buried in the backyard. Jul 17, Kiwi Carlisle rated it it was amazing. I catch myself processing my own emotions in scenes, in shots, in dialogue. I'm glad to see Falco and Helena at all. I did find the ending of this one a little overdone, and I was a little disappointed that the mystery wound up going more or less no where, but I did still enjoy the book. Although I have to admit to a bias for Falco fare over this series, this particular run is good to the taste. Send me weekly book recommendations and inside scoop. As per the preceding two novels Falco and Helena appear to be on shifting sands relationship-wise, with the influence of a potential imperial suitor muddying the waters between them. Of course 'The Iron Hand of Mars' wouldn't be a Falco novel without the presence of Helena Justina, the senator's daughter who is the perfect match to his character. But there is more to Xanthus than meets the eye, and Falco wonders if he's really an assassin. Falco is sent on another seemingly impossible errand for Vespasian to the outposts of the Roman Empire and beyond. Marcus Didius Falco 4. The Clocks Agatha Christie. The Iron Hand of Mars: a Marcus Didius Falco Mystery
The Iron Hand of Mars Marcus Didius Falco A Novel Lindsey Davis I 'One thing is definite,' I told Helena Justina; 'I am not going to Germany!' Immediately I could see her planning what to pack for the trip. We were in bed at my apartment, high up on the Aventine. A real sixth-floor bughole - only most bugs grew tired of walking upstairs before they ever got this far. I passed them sometimes, flaked out on halfway landings, with droopy antennae and tired little feet.... It was a place you could only laugh about, or the squalor would break your heart. Even the bed was rocky. And that was after I had pieced in a new leg and tightened the mattress webs. I was trying out a new way of making love to Helena, which I had devised in the interests of not letting our relationship go stale. I had known her a year, let her seduce me after six months of thinking about it, and had finally managed to persuade her to live with me about two weeks ago. According to my previous experience of women, I must be right on target to be told I drank too much and slept too much, and that her mother needed her urgently back at home. My athletic efforts at holding her interest had not gone unnoticed. 'Didius Falco... wherever did you.... learn this trick?' 'Invented it myself ...' Helena was a senator's daughter. Expecting her to put up with my filthy lifestyle for more than a fortnight had to be pushing my luck.
