ASSOCIATION/CLUBS DETAILED REPORT

INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL (IQAC) Coordinator: Mr.Chandrashekara.K Co-coordinator: Dr.Nayana L.M • Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the College conducted a one day workshop “Stress Management” on 12th July 2019 in the College auditorium. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with Commerce & Management Association and S.D.M. P.G. Study centre, , Mangalore. The Chief Guest and resource person of the workshop were Prof.Deepa Nayak, Lecturer, S.D.M. P.G. Study centre, Kodialbail, Mangalore. Around 100 students actively participated in the workshop. Student council members, secretaries of various associations, departments and cells and class representatives participated in the workshop. • IQAC in association with department of political science of the college organised Mangalore Taluk Level special programme on “One Nation One Constitution” on 22/11/2019. Former principal of Government First Grade College, Haleyangadi, Prof.Vishwanath Bhat was the

guest of honour. All the faculty memebers and memebers of students council were present in the programme. • Organised one-day workshop ‘NAAC- Perspectives in new methodology’ on 20-09-2019 in the college auditorium.Resource person Dr Ravi, Assistant Professor, Govt.First Grade College, Vamadapadavu discussed about the new methodology NAAC and clarified doubts of the teachers. 60 teaching and non-teaching staff attended the workshop.

STUDENTS’ COUNCIL Student Welfare Officer: Mr.Chandrashekara.K • Orientation program was held for the first year B. A, B.Sc and B.CA students on 24-06-2019 and on 06-7-19 for B. Com, BA, B.Sc, BCA and BBM students. All the firs year degree students attended the program. Members of the staff gave information on various aspects like college timings, uniform, discipline, sports, library, importance of extra - curricular activities along with studies. • Class representatives of First, Second and Final year classes were selected and office bearers of the student council were selected for the year 2019-20. Mamatha of Final B.Com (B) is selected as President, Rasheena Banu Final B.Sc as Vice-president, Shwetha V Final BCA as secretary, Masith Final BA as joint secretary and Raseena Thasneem Final BBA as joint secretary of the college for the academic year 2019-20. Student leaders were selected on merit basis. • The first meeting of student council with class representatives, secretaries of NSS, sports, Fine arts was held on 13-7-19. Students were addressed by Mr.Chandrahekara.K, student welfare officer and academic advisor of the college. • Student’s council inauguration for the academic year 2019-20 was held on 13th August 2019 at town hall Mangalore. Mr. Vedavyas Kamath, MLA of Mangalore south constituency was the president programme, Mr.P.S. Prakash, chief editor of Hosadigantha daily newspaper was the guest of honour. Prof.Srivarma Ajri, principal of Government First Grade College inaugurated the programme. Prof.Jagadish Bala principal of the college were present in the programme. Prof.Chandrashekara.K, Coordinator of Student council and Student welfare of the college gave pledge of oath to the students council members. Ms.Mamatha, Presidnt of students council welcomed the gathering, Secretary Ms.Shwetha proposed vote of thanks. the programme. The inauguration was followed by a cultural programme. Ms.Soumyashree was the master of ceremony. All the faculty members and students were present in the programme. • 73rd Independence day was celebrated in the college on 15th August 2019. Ex-service man- Defence and present employee of corporation bank, Hampankatta, Mangalore Mr.Somashekar.K was the guest of honour for flag hoisting. In the 73rd Independence day speech he encouraged the students to join the army and serve the nation with pride. He shared the experience of his service and obstacles he faced. All the faculty members and 260 students of final year degree were present in the programme. • Students’ council of the college in association with Redcross of the college and Lions club Mangalore Tulunadu and Lions club Ashoknagar Mangalore in collaboration with KMC Athavar organised Mega Health camp to the students of the college. Ln. Ronald PintoInaugurated the programme, Ln.Babitha Lokesh presided over the programme. Doctors of KMC Athavara Mangalore made eye test, ENT, General checkup, gynecological and dental check up of the students. All the students of the college benefited from the programme.

• Students’ council and Career guidance cell of the college organised workshop on photography to the interested students of the college. Leading reporter of Times of newspaper and professional photographer Mr.Ravi posavanike was the resource person. Dr.Vishwanath Badikana from the department of Kannada gave the brief introduction about the workshop. Prof.Jagadish Bala principal of the college was the president of the programme. PLACEMENT CELL Coordinators: Mrs.Bindu.T and Mr.Manjunath.M.M • The inauguration of placement cell activities for the academic year 2019-20 was held on 21- 08-2019. Dr.Appaji Gowda, Joint director,Department of Collegiate education, Mangalore region was the inaugurator. Prof .Jagadisha Bala,Principal of the college presided over the function. Prof .Sheshappa , Department of Sociology, Govt First Grade college, Car street was the resource person. He explained the different types of competitive exams and the methods to prepare for such exams. Prof.Manjunatha .M.M welcomed the gathering and Mrs.Bindu.T thanked. 122 students of Final year B.Com,B.Sc and B.A participated in the programme. • A Workshop on photography was organized by placement cell in association with Student council on 06-09-2019. Mr.Ravi Posavanike was the resource person. He motivated the students to take photography as a career option and explained his experiences as a photographer. Mr. Ashith Poojari of TIME was the resource person . He explained about the IBPS bank exams and motivated the students to prepare for the bank exams. Mrs.Bindu.T welcomed the gathering .Mr.Manjunatha .M.M thanked. 64 students of Final B.Com participated in the programme. • A Programme on how to face competitive exams was conducted on 28-01-2020. Mr.Suresh of Sarvajna IAS Academy, Mangalore was the chief guest and resource person. He explained the different competitive exams conducted by U.P.S.C, K.P.S and Staff Selection Commission . Students were given training on the kind of examination questions and also the guided the students regarding preparation for these exams. Mr.Manjunatha .M.M welcomed and Mrs.Bindu.T thanked. 110 students of Final year classes attended the programme. • A Programme on career choices was organized on 04-02-2020. Mr.Irshad of Unnathi Career Academy explained the different career choices available to the students like hospital administration, aviation, hospitality ,information technology etc. Dr.Jagadeesha Bala, Principal of the college presided over the function. Mrs.Bindu.T welcomed the gathering and Mr.Manjunatha .M.M thanked. 50 students attended the programme. • A Programme was conducted on 05-02-2020 to create awareness on different Government and private job option available to the students after their graduation. Mr.Mahesh Kumar ,Senior Assistant Director of Fisheries was the chief guest and resource person. He elaborated on different career options available for the students in Government sector as well as private sector. Dr.Jagadeesha Bala, Principal of the college presided over the programme. Mr.Manjunatha .M.M and Mrs.Bindu.T Placement Cell officers of the college organized the programme. 78 students participated in the programme.

ELECTORAL LITERARY CLUB Coordinator: Dr Joshna Mahesh • Department of political science along with Electoral Literacy Club celebrated National Voter’s day on 24.01.2020. Nearly 500 students gathered in the college ground. Dr.Joshna Mahesh, coordinator of ELC and HOD of department of political science spoke on the importance of casting vote for making democracy successful. Voter’s oath taking ceremony was

held. All the staff and students took voter’s oath and pledged to cast their vote in the elections. Staff members of the department and ELC representatives conducted enrolment drive for new voters. Many students were enrolled into the voters list.

HUMAN RIGHTS CELL Coordinator: Dr Joshna Mahesh • On behalf of One Nation, One Constitution programme, University level inter Collegiate Elocution and Patriotic Song competitions were conducted. Students from 11 colleges participated in the competition. Principal distributed the prizes. • Human Rights Cell organized discussion on Human Rights Violation and Its Protection on 10.10.2019. Mrs Shilpa Rao lecturer department of political science spoke on the importance of human rights. Ms Vidya lecturer department of political science spoke on prevention of human rights violation. Human Rights Cell coordinator Dr Joshna Mahesh gave information regarding National Human Rights Commission and State Human Rights Commission, method of complaining and getting help from Human Rights Commission. It was followed by discussion. 60 students participated in the programme. • Human Rights Cell organized visit to Abhaya Ashraya old age home at Konaje on 18.01.2020. The purpose of the visit was to create awareness among students regarding violation of human rights of old people by family members. Dr.Joshna Mahesh, coordinator of Human Rights Cell, Ms.Vidya, lecturer in political science and 23 students participated in the programme. Madam Nalini, in charge of old age home briefed students regarding the activity of the old age home and the problems of old people. Students were made to realize that they have to look after old people with care and love. Students had interaction with the inmates, distributed fruits and sweets and conducted some games.

YOUTH RED CROSS UNIT Coordinator: Dr.Shaila K.N. • Youth red cross organised international yoga day celebration on 21-6-2019. Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind & body, thought & action, restraint & fulfillment, harmony between man and nature, a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. In order to create awareness on Yoga , Youth Red Cross Association of our college had celebrated International Yoga Day on 21-6-2019 with great enthusiasm. Kum. Manvitha,

Youth Red Cross volunteer, demonstrated various asanas. Warmup exercises were taken and students performed soorya namaskar. Importance of these asanas were explained simultaneously. Prof. Jagadeesha Bala, Principal, GFGCW, Balmatta had presided over the programme. Dr. Shaila K.N, Youth Red Cross Programme Officer was present on the occasion. 35 Volunteers actively participated in the programme. • To provide students with basic information and ideas on waste reduction. reuse and preparation of ecofriendly products out of waste material a programme on “wealth out of waste” was organised by the Youth Red Cross Association on 24-6-2019. Volunteers numbering 30 were the beneficiaries of the programme. • Inauguration of the academic activities of Youth Red Cross Association was organised on 6-7- 2019. The programme was started with the invocation song by the students, it was followed by dignitaries and chief guest lighting the lamp to inaugurate the occasion. Mr. Mariet Mascarenhas, Principal, Government Women’s pre- university College, Balmatta gave a brief talk on the involvement of students in the various activities of the association. Programme was presided over by Prof. Jagadeesh Bala, Principal, GFGCW, Balmatta. Dr. Shaila K.N Programme Officer, Youth Red Cross was present on the occasion. 101 volunteers were the beneficiaries of the programme. • Youth Red Cross volunteers has participated in the programme organised by the district administration on prevention and creating awareness about the issue of drugs on 18-7-2019 at Town Hall, Mangaluru. 50 volunteers had actively participated in the programme. • Campus cleaning programme was organised by the Youth Red Cross unit of our college on 23-7-2019. 35 volunteers were engaged in the cleaning programme. At the end volunteers were provided with snacks. • Youth Red Cross Association of our college has conducted a campus cleaning programme on 30-7-2019 at our college premises. 35 Youth Red Cross volunteers were engaged in the cleaning programme. • Youth Red Cross organised programme on stress management on 6-8-2019. To overcome stress and anxiety among students, Youth Red Cross Association of our college has organised a workshop on stress management. Aiming to guide the students about how to relieve themselves from stress in order to excel in their career, the workshop was addressed by the representatives of Susheg Lifeline – Saving lives organization. Prof. Savitha B, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics had presided over the programme. The workshop was organized by Dr. Shaila K.N,

Youth Red Cross Programme Officer. Volunteers numbering 43 had actively participated in the workshop. • Youth Red Cross organised programme on Laxmi B.V Rai – an unsung heroine of dashina kannada on 16-8-2019. Laxmi B.V Rai was a dedicated personality who selflessly gave her life for the sake of our country and was put behind bars for her involvement in the various activities of the freedom struggle. But unfortunately her role as a freedom fighter is not highlighted anywhere, said Prof. Mahesh Rai, Assistant Professor, Department of Kannada and the grandson of Laxmi B.V Rai. Prof. Jagadeesha Bala, Principal, GFGCW, Balmatta had presided over the programme. Dr. Mohith Suvarna Associate Professor, Department of History and Dr. Shaila K.N, Assistant Professor, Department of History were present on the occasion. 70 students actively participated in the programme. • Awareness programme on Dengue fever was organised for all the II year Youth Red Cross volunteers on 17-8-2019. Dr. Bharathi Prakash, Associate Professor Department of Microbiology, University College, Mangaluru, presented various methods to prevent Dengue fever. Pamphlets were distributed among the volunteers to create awareness about the fever. Programme was presided over by Prof. Jagadeesh Bala, Principal, GFGCW, Balmatta. Youth Red Cross Programme Officer Dr. Shaila K.N conveyed vote of thanks. 77 volunteers were the beneficiaries of the programme. • Youth Red Cross organised programme on gender and cyber safty on 26-8-2019 Online abuse is a part of gender based violence where information and communication technologies are used for threats of physical and sexual violence. The growing reach of internet and the rapid speed of information through mobile devices has presented new opportunities that could put some women at risk. So it is important to be mindful of the danger, said Mrs. Manjula, spokesperson of SAMVADA team, Mangaluru. The Youth Red Cross Association of our college had organised a programme on “Gender and Cyber Safety”. Prof. Jagadeesha Bala, Principal, GFGCW had presided over the programme. The secretaries of Youth Red Cross, Kum. Lasya welcomed the gathering and Kum. Pallavi proposed vote of thanks. Dr. Shaila K.N, Programme Officer , Youth Red Cross was present on the occasion. 63 volunteers were the beneficiaries of the programme. • Youth Red Cross organised programme on MEGA MEDICAL CAMP: 6-9-2019 & 7-9-2019. Mega Medical Camp was organised in our college witnessed an overwhelming response from students. Jointly organised by Youth Red Cross and Student Council in association with Lions Club Mangaluru Tulunadu, Lions Club Mangaluru, Ashokanagara and KMC Attavar. Chief guest Dr. Naveen Shetty , Principal, NITTE Commerce and Science College, spoke about the 14

FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION Coordinator: Dr.Rajesh Shetty • Aatida Tammana- Inter class competition was held to explore local traditions during monsoon (variety monsoon special foods) on 03-08-2019. • Inter class variety competition was held on 28-08-2019 .This program was inaugurated by Srushti R Shetty, Drama Junior Season 3 Runner up . 15 teams of the college participated in the competition. Each team was given 20 minutes to exhibit their talents. Dr. Kishore Kumar Shetty (Principal, Sri Ramakrishna Degree College, Mangalore), Smt. Chitrakshi, Bharatanatya artist and Abhilash Bajpe (Tulu movie artist) were the judges for this competition. • 15 students of our college participated in the inter collegiate cultural fest organized by MSNM Besant college , Bondel,Mangalore and secured first place in Rangoli, second in Group dance and overall Championship Runner up. • Students of our college exhibited their various cultural talents on 26- 01-2020 as a part of republic day celebration at town hall , Mangalore.

The Humanities Association of the college has inaugurated the beginnings of celebrations on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 25-7-2019. Prof. Jagadeesh Bala, Principal, GFGCW, Balmatta had presided over the programme. With the completion of the preliminary round, students were called for the final round. 40 students were present on the occasion. • Humanities Association of our college had conducted a student seminar on the topic ‘Remembering Savithribai Phule : An inspiration for Indian Women’ to mark the occasion of 187th birth anniversary of Savithribai Phule on 4 -1-2020. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH: Coordinator:Mrs.Deepika Suvarna • The department of English organised certificate course in communicative English for the students of first semester BA. degree course. The inauguration of the same was held on 24.07.2019 at 3 pm. The students of English Major studying at St. Agnes Autonomous College, Mangalore were the facilitators for the same. As many as 70 students attended the training programme held over a period of 34 hours from 24.07.2019 to 04.09.2019. Deepika Suvarna, H.O.D. of English, GFGWC, Balmatta and Dr Malini Achar, H.O.D. of English, St. Agnes College, Mangalore, jointly provided guidance to the facilitators. The aim was to facilitate students from rural background to equip themselves with English speaking skills. The outcome of the programme was encouraging as students were forthcoming in speaking in English. There were fewer inhibitions and better confidence among students.

• The department of English organised lecture sessions by the students of Post Graduate Studies, Department of English, St. Aloysius Autonomous College, Mangalore, for the first semester students of B.Com and BA. degree course between 06.08.2019 and 16.08.2019 as a part of the M.O.U. between the two departments. As many as 130 B.Com. students and 70 BA. students participated in the same. It included lectures, role play and group discussions. Students exposure to peer-learning facilitated better grasping ability. • The department of English organised a seminar on Women and Motherhood in collaboration with Inner Wheel Club of Mangalore North on 17.08.2019 for the students of B.Com. and B.Sc. classes. Dr Mario Bukelo, Pediatrician, Fr Muller Medical Hospital was the resource person. He spoke on the issues and concerns of women with regard to motherhood. It was an informative session. As many as 100 students participated in the same. The outcome of the programme was that students were able to clarify doubts and myths pertaining to motherhood. The English Literary Association organized various inter-class English literary competitions in January 2020 to hone the language skills of the students. Various competitions such as debate, elocution, creative writing, poetry composition, letter writing, extempore, spelling bee, essay writing, mock press and the like were conducted for the benefit of the students. The winners of these competitions were awarded prizes on the annual day held in March 2020. Ms Vasudha, the student secretary of the English Literary Association bagged the most dedicated student participant award with a cash prize of Rs two thousand and a certificate of excellence for her relentless service and participation in the English Literary activities through the three years of under graduation.

• The English Literary Association in collaboration with the Inner Wheel Club of Mangalore North, organized an inter-collegiate fest ELF – 2020 on February 14, 2020. It was an event held exclusively for the students of Government colleges to put to test their language and literary skills. Dr Malini Hebbar inaugurated the event. Mrs Asha Nayak was the guest of honour. As many as nine teams participated in the event. Dr Jagadisha Bala, the principal, presided over the inaugural ceremony. Deepika Suvarna, Associate Professor of English and the organizer of the event, welcomed the gathering. Vasudha, the secretary of the association delivered the vote of thanks. GFGC, Uppinangady were adjudged the Champions while GFGC, Karkala won the Most Vibrant Team title. • The department of English organised a seminar on Narrative Techniques in Things Fall Apart for the third semester students of BA. programme. Dr Sreeja J., Associate Professor of English,

Programme was inaugurated by Deputy Regional Manager of bank of Baroda Mr. Rajaneesh Mishra. On his speech, he stressed that throught Hindi language, we find ample job opportunities in government sectors. Students of our college participated as volunteers in ISKCON programme on HERITAGE FEST- 2019 promoting Indian cultural values on 4th September 2019 at Ramakrishna college, Buntshostel and on 24th September 2019 at Kudroli Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple hall on view of Shree Krishna Janmastami. 10 students participated as volunteer and extended their service to ISKCON.

National service scheme units of the college organized blood group identification programme at Govt .Primary school ,Balmatta, Mangalore in association with Microbiology department of St.Agnes college ,Mangalore on 30-08-2019. Mrs.Vidya Pattali ,Lecturer of Microbiology Department , Final year B.Sc students of St.Agnes college and N.S.S officers Mrs.Bindu.T ,Divya.M.P along with N.S.S students of the college organized the programme. Blood groups of 44 students of Govt.Primary school and Govt.High school ,Balmatta, Mangalore were identified. Eight N.S.S Volunteers participated in the programme. 3. N.S.S Volunteers and programme officers visited the orphanage and Govt U.P school Kapikad on 06-09-2019.
