Mise en Scéne Winter Edition VOLUME 6 ISSUE 3 CSUEB Spellers take the stage in Inside this Issue "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" Director, Marc Jacobs, shares his thoughts on this musical comedy Upcoming Shows 2 My first encounter with "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" was with the Post Street Theatre in San Francisco, 10 years ago. This was the first Our Students 3 production after the original Broadway cast, and I had several friends in the show, which was cast locally. One of the cast members was James Monroe Checking In 4 Iglehart (CSUEB Graduate) who had been in previous musicals I had directed in San Jose. James has since gone on to win the Tony Award as the Genie in Disney’s Broadway production of "Aladdin." James was playing 'Comfort Guest Artists 5 Counselor' Mitch Mahoney in "Spelling Bee," and his performance was so perfect that the producers decided to model every subsequent 'Mitch' on James’ performance. Another friend in the show was Aaron Albano, who had Featured Faculty 7 started out as one of the teenagers in my production of The Music Man that I directed in San Jose, and has since gone on to appear on Broadway in The Wiz, Newsies, and currently in Allegiance. The San Francisco company of Information 9 "Spelling Bee" was so successful, that the producers ultimately used those actors to replace the Broadway company once the original actors were ready to leave the show. One of those original actors, Sarah Salzburg ‒ the original “Schwarzy” in ‘Spelling Bee - was the daughter of a good friend of mine. -

COHEN, ADAPTED FROM THE NOVEL BY SINCLAIR LEWIS SOUND DESIGN AND MUSIC BY PAUL JAMES PRENDERGAST DIRECTED BY LISA PETERSON DEAR FRIENDS, Four years ago, in the lead-up to the 2016 election, Berkeley Rep produced Tony Taccone and Bennett Cohen’s adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ frighteningly prescient novel. With a desire to see the story reach the widest possible audience, and celebrating the impulse that led the wpa in 1936 to share the original stage version of Lewis’ novel for free with 21 theatres across the country, Berkeley Rep offered the rights to Tony and Bennett’s adaptation to theatres, community centers, universities — anyone who wanted to put together their own production or reading. And now, in 2020, this story feels all the more vital, and the need to share it widely even more compelling. I am honored that more than 75 organizations from more than 20 states have partnered with us to share this production of It Can’t Happen Here for free with their audiences and communities. We are joined in this effort by long-time theatre colleagues, by universities from Howard in Wash- ington, DC to Saint Cloud State in Minnesota (near Lewis’ hometown), by libraries, community centers, and radio stations. I am deeply grateful to Tony and Bennett, director Lisa Peterson, sound designer Paul James Prendergast and his small but mighty team, and this extraordinary cast who have collaborated across miles and time zones, through wildfires and new technology, for their conviction that the- atre matters, that narrative helps us to see the world more clearly, and that together we have the capacity to effect change. -

From May 11 to June 18, we’ll present Wmore than a dozen short and full-length plays over forty-six performances and readings, including our evening of shorts, Best of PlayGround 21 (May 11–28), the world premieres of Robin Lynn Rodriguez’s Hedge (May 15–June 17) and Ignacio Zulueta’s Kano + Abe (May 22–June 18), curtain raisers by top high school dramatists as part of our 9th annual Young Playwrights Project (May 18–21), and staged readings of new full-length works by Crish Barth, Patricia Cotter, Victoria Chong Der, and Kirk Shimano (May 20–21 and May 27–28). Over six weeks, the PlayGround Festival offers you a singular opportunity to sample the very best the Bay Area has to offer in new plays and new voices for the stage! The Festival is just one of the many ways in which PlayGround supports the development of new writers, new plays, and new audiences. In October 2015, PlayGround signed the master lease for Thick House Theater and, over the last year-and-a-half, we raised more than $260,000 to complete major renovations to the theatre, including new air conditioning, seats, theatrical lighting, signage, and upgrades to the lobby and restrooms. -

From the Artistic Directors As the weather cools down, the Fountain stays hot. For the second consecutive year, the Fountain Theatre is offering you the Los Angeles Premiere of a recent Pulitzer Prize winning play. Last season, we proudly produced the second production of Martyna Majok’s poignant Cost of Living, following the New York premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club. We are thrilled to now share Stephen Adly Guirgis’ funny and powerful Between Riverside and Crazy. These back-to-back prize winners demonstrate how the Fountain aims to always provide you with theatre of the highest quality on our intimate stage. Stephen Adly Guirgis is widely considered to be one of the most distinctive voices to have emerged from New York theater in decades. This acclaimed and award-winning playwright humbly admits, “A play is not a cure for cancer. The best play in the world is not going to make peace. But it’s going to create a community to perform it, and it’s going to be performed for a community, and when those communities are spicy, when there’s different ingredients in the pot, that, to me, is the most beautiful thing.” In Guirgis’ delightful new play, a fiery group of misfits and outcasts discover how to become a family in a cavernous rent-controlled apartment on Riverside Drive. No matter how down and out his characters are, or how challenging their circumstances, they have faith in the possibility of grace and redemption. Guirgis writes with such humor and truth and humanity, it permeates all aspects of this marvelous play. -

® E WORLD PREMIER BY Z WRITTEN R RICARDO PÉREZ GONZÁLEFEB MA BY DIRECTED BAL 26 22 DAVID MENDIZÁ T EAT DON’E S TH MANGO from the desk of Loretta Greco WELCOME TO MAGIC. WE’RE SO HAPPY YOU’RE HERE. I can think of no better way to begin the New Year than by introducing Ricardo Pérez González as we unveil the world premiere of his wickedly funny tragedy, Don’t Eat the Mangos, with you, the Bay’s most adventurous new play audience! Mangos is a quintessential Magic play. It is brave. It insists on seeking and speaking truths that few dare to acknowledge, let alone speak aloud so that we may heal. It embraces the messy and never-ending business of growing up and learning to be true to oneself, while wrestling with the ever-evolving idea of home and our obligation to it. It is a play that manages to vividly introduce us to a whole new world—at the same time enabling us to recognize ourselves anew. I was captivated by this coexistence of the new and the familiar within only the frst few pages, as Ricardo transported me to his family neighborhood in Carolina, Puerto Rico, as three grown sisters argue as only sisters can—tag-teaming over shared history as rapidly as they shift from Spanish to English. I knew these women down to my core. I recognized their restlessness, no holds barred criticism of one another, and, yes, their complicated love—for each other, for familia, for home. I was fascinated by Ricardo’s interrogation of our patriarchal paradigms and the way he explores the reliability of memory—especially our perceptions of shared experiences and the unique individual truths we forge in order to survive.
