Disgusted at the repeated invasion of their precious waterways and the sacrilege of beheading Bäru in his own nest, Yolŋu elders decided to use sacred art to explain their lore and law to outsiders. Broome’s Aboriginal taxi drivers were legendary, pioneer business-people who directly benefited the community and led to lower costs of transport for Aboriginal people. They were also the heart and soul of the community and were problem solvers and unofficial community guardians. Today in many remote communities it can cost as much as $A450 for a single one-way trip to a supermarket to purchase food for a community. There are no buses and most communities have to add these costs on to the already very highly inflated prices of food and sustenance.

Reuben is the seventh great grandson to tribal warrior Chief Mannalargenna (Dolly Dalrymple line). Reuben uses representations of Tasmanian native animals, local landscapes and bright and bold colours to tell stories of culture, travelling, family, community and connection. Storytelling has been at the core of Aboriginal culture in Tasmania for generations and Reuben knows and understands the importance of storytelling. He finds joy in painting stories, whether it be stories of his own, a story of Aboriginal culture or a story for the viewer to discover.

    July 2019 - July 2022 Acknowledgement of Country The NRMA acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land and waterways on which our organisation operates. We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present and future. About the artwork Keep Country Moving by Riki Salam is a lasting symbol of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). We worked collaboratively with Gilimbaa, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned creative agency, to uncover our vision for reconciliation and explore how it aligns with our values and strategic direction. The resulting bespoke artwork represents movement, clear pathways and connected communities. Lines flow, country is connected, travelling through, ceremony is performed. Deep within, richness is uncovered, we are together working as one. Nature is transformed, through knowledge of country the spirit is renewed. Songs are sung, the sun shines bright on a brand new day. Respect for land, respect for people, respect for culture. About the artist Riki Salam was born and raised in Cairns on Yidindji land in 1972. He is a member of Muralag, Kala Lagaw Ya, Meriam Mer and Kuku Yalanji peoples on his father’s side and a member of the Ngai Tahu people of the South Island of New Zealand on his mother’s side. Educated in Cairns and Brisbane, he has more than 20 years’ industry experience as a graphic designer and artist. Riki has worked on many high profile projects, including Yananyi Dreaming, a painted B747 commissioned by Qantas. He works with pen and ink, gouache on paper and acrylic paints, exploring concepts of traditional culture in a contemporary format.
