GEORGIA STATE SOFTBALL

A HECK Of A Leader Robert E. “Bob” Heck founded the Georgia State softball program in 1984 and has been the force behind its growth. He retired in 1998, but State talked him out of that and brought him back in 2001.

Heck has a master’s degree from Emory and a master’s in business from Geor- gia State, which is why he spent 35 years working as a vice-president for the Federal Reserve Bank and as a national bank examiner with the Controller of the Currency.

But, in softball, he must have a doctorate. Now in his 20th season as Georgia State’s softball coach, Heck has coached 1,065 games with 579 wins. He’s won five conference titles and took the team into a Top 25 national ranking and a NCAA berth in 1994. Heck is 26-15 against CAA foes during the regular season.

Heck has helped build an outstanding softball complex in Panthersville that bears his name - Bob Heck Field -with a beautiful indoor and outdoor practice facility, game room, weight room, meeting room, batting cages, pitching cages, and restrooms. He’s upgraded the game field with concrete stands and arm-chair seating and put in a new scoreboard. The field is manicured and in top playing condition.

* = Conference game () extra inning game GEORGIA STATE SOFTBALL

Georgia State’s “Iron Horse” Major League Baseball had its Lou Gehrig and Cal Ripken, Jr. who showed up every day to play during their stellar careers. Georgia State has proudly enjoyed four solid and dependable seasons from infielder Mary Kathryn Branan.

The Alpharetta, Ga., native was her team captain and team MVP in high school (Milton) and has taken on the role as team co-captain this season at State.

Branan enters the CAA Championships with 217 career games played, 5th most in school history. She will top 200 career hits with her 1st base hit in the CAA Tournament. She’s also scored 101 career runs for the Panthers.

This year, she has banged out 16 doubles to tie for second most in the CAA as she has the fourth most in a season for State (20 is the record). Her 41 career doubles sit third most in school history, with 43 being second most.

Branan enjoyed a recent two home-run game when she hit two out of the park on April 22 vs. UNC Wilmington.

Her younger sister plays for Georgia Southern and they met this year in a doubleheader. “MK” stepped up with a five-for- seven game at the plate, in- cluding a game-winning RBI among her three RBI on the day.

Branan is enjoying a .302 season at the plate with a team high sacrifice flies (6) and seven homeruns to go with the 16 doubles.

A good base runner, “MK” has 19 career stolen bases in her 22 attempts.

In 2006, Branan earned a CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the spring semester. The Automated ScoreBook Overall Statistics for Georgia State (as of May 07, 2007) (All games Sorted by Batting avg)
