  • The Very Thought of Long Beach, CA Immediately Brings O.G. Culture to Mind
The very thought of Long Beach, CA immediately brings O.G. culture to mind. You can practically see those classic Snoop Dogg and Warren G videos on repeat at the mention of the city. For as inextricably connected to West Coast hip-hop as the LBC may be, it gives rise to a fresh and fiery voice for soul in Giveon. With nearly half-a-million independent streams to his credit and acclaim by everyone from Flaunt to HotNewHipHop, the Long Beach-born singer and songwriter infuses Rat Pack-style classiness into modern R&B. “It’s a different perspective,” he explains. “There’s soul to it. There’s pop to it. However, I want to speak on relatable things everybody thinks about but nobody says—in a classy way. The goal is just to be Giveon.” One of three brothers raised by a single mother, he gravitated towards music at a young age. He initially found inspiration in Frank Ocean and Miguel between performing at school functions. As he recalls, “Mom did a really good job of sheltering us, so we didn’t fall into what was going on outside like the gang culture and poverty.” Attending a GRAMMY® Academy program at eighteen proved transformative as the instructor implored him to perform Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” for a project. “I had an epiphany after initially hearing Sinatra,” he says. “It was the very first time I heard a baritone singer. I got into Bobby Caldwell and Barry White from there. I realized my tone at this point.” Developing his own baritone delivery, he caught the attention of another Long Beach local and multiplatinum singer and songwriter AUGUST 08 [DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber] who served as an initial mentor.

  • The Free Black Artist: Frank Ocean Through a Decolonial Lens Benjamin Lewellyn-Taylor* Brite Divinity School, Dallas, TX, USA
BLACK THEOLOGY 2019, VOL. 17, NO. 1, 52–68 https://doi.org/10.1080/14769948.2019.1554329 The Free Black Artist: Frank Ocean Through a Decolonial Lens Benjamin Lewellyn-Taylor* Brite Divinity School, Dallas, TX, USA ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This paper examines the historical degradation of Black artists in the Hip hop; decolonial; music industry as a form of neocolonialism wrought by largely neocolonialism; Frank Ocean; White-owned parent companies. Using Frank Ocean’s 2016 music industry; GRAMMYS rebellion against Def Jam Recordings and the GRAMMYs, this paper uplifts Ocean as a model for the liberation of other Black artists. This paper employs a decolonial approach that reads Negritude thinkers Aimé Césaire and Frantz Fanon and theologian Kelly Brown Douglas through the lens of Ocean’s actions and artistry as a means to envision new possibilities for the disruption and destruction of neocolonial structures and the affirmation of Black lives as sacred. Introduction The music industry’s treatment of Black artists is a form of neocolonialism that operates as the historical life-force of the music industry. From recording contracts that cheat Black artists out of money and creative expression to the GRAMMY Awards’ continued denial of their exclusionary awards practices, the control of Black artistry permeates the music industry’s various structures. In the face of such exploitation and marginalization, Frank Ocean exemplifies a free Black artist who liberated and liberates himself from these multiple industry woes. In this paper, I outline the neocolonial history of the music indus- try’s relationship to Black artists as a means to view Frank Ocean’s self-liberating actions from the music industry as a model for the decolonial liberation of Black artists everywhere.

Oregon Undergraduate Research Journal 13.1 (2018) ISSN: 2160-617X (online) blogs.uoregon.edu/ourj Spitting Bars and Subverting Heteronormativity: An Analysis of Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator’s Departures from Heteronormativity, Traditional Concepts of Masculinity, and the Gender Binary Lizzy Elkins*, International Studies and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies ABSTRACT This paper seeks to investigate an emerging movement of rap and pop artists who actively subvert structures of the gender binary and heteronormativity through their music. The main artists considered in this research are pop/rap/R&B artist Frank Ocean and rap artist Tyler, the Creator, both of whom have claimed fame relatively recently. Artists like Ocean and Tyler make intentional departures from heteronormativity and the gender binary, combat concepts such as ‘toxic masculinity’, and hint at the possibilities for normalization and destigmatization of straying from the gender binary through lyrics, metaphysical expressions, physical embodiments of gender, expression of fluid/non-heteronormative sexualities, and disregard for labels in their sexual and gendered identities. I will discuss the history and context around music as an agent for social change and address privileging of the black heterosexual cisgender man as the central voice to pop/rap/R&B in the following research. This project will draw on Beauvoirian philosophy regarding gender as well as contemporary sources of media like Genius, record sale statistics, and album lyrics. By illustrating and evaluating how these artists subvert traditional concepts of gender and sexuality, I hope to also shine a light on how their music, which reaches millions of people who are less aware of or accepting of gayness, catalyzes social change and is significant in this current political moment, which is an era of increasing public tolerance of queer ideas and less binary gender expression.

  • The Sonic Bildungsroman: Coming-Of-Age Narratives in Album Form
The Sonic Bildungsroman: Coming-of-Age Narratives in Album Form Dallas Killeen TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 2019 __________________________________________ Hannah Wojciehowski Department of English Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Chad Bennett Department of English Second Reader Abstract Author: Dallas Killeen Title: The Sonic Bildungsroman: Coming-of-Age Narratives in Album Form Supervising Professors: Hannah Wojciehowski, Ph.D. Chad Bennett, Ph.D. The Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story, deals with the transitional period of adolescence. Although initially conceived in the novel form, the Bildungsroman has since found expression in various media. This thesis expands the scope of the genre by describing the “sonic Bildungsroman,” or coming-of-age album, and exploring a few key examples of this previously undefined concept. Furthermore, the record as a medium affords musicians narrative agency critical to their identity development, so this project positions the coming- of-age album squarely in the tradition of the Bildungsroman as a tool for self-cultivation. This thesis examines two albums in great detail: Pure Heroine by Lorde and Channel Orange by Frank Ocean. In these records, Lorde and Ocean lyrically, musically, and visually portray their journeys toward self-actualization. While the works show thematic similarities in their respective presentations of the adolescent experience, Lorde and Ocean craft stories colored by their unique identities. In this way, the two albums capture distinct approaches to constructing coming-of-age narratives in album form, yet both represent foundational examples of the genre due to their subject matter, narrative trajectory, and careful composition. From this basis, this project offers a framework for understanding how popular musicians construct coming-of-age stories in their albums—and for understanding how these stories affect us as listeners.

David Bowie, Paul Kantner, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, Juan Gabriel, George Michael, Sharon Jones... the list goes on. And yet, while sad 2016 became a meme of its own, there is so much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall volume is up 3% over 2016, fueled by a 76% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. Nearly 650 solo artists, groups and collaborators appeared on the Top 200 Song Consumption chart in 2016, representing over 1,200 different songs.
