A separate fact sheet is available for each species. The aim of the factsheets is to encourage public awareness of these unique New Zealand species and to find compatible ways of managing the places where they exist. A first step towards this is to help people recognise the plants and take an interest in their welfare. Description formation. 72 NATIVE PLANTS IN A FENDALTON GARDEN DEREK COOK AND WARWICK HARRIS Usually private gardens come and go with little record of their existence. Often their duration is short and determined by the period of care the gardener who created them is able to give to them. Through creating and caring for a garden, a gardener inevitably acquires knowledge of the plants in the garden and their requirements for adequate growth. While most gardeners are happy to show and talk to people about their gardens, few leave a written record of the knowledge they acquired about the plants they grew or attempted to grow in their garden. This is a record of plants of the garden of Derek Cook created at 27 Glandovey Road, Fendalton Christchurch. As described by Mary Lovell-Smith (2001) in The Press, it is a garden that was developed as a consequence of a passionate interest in native plants. The garden is a plant collector's garden. Consequently its form is determined by the objective to grow as many different species of native plant as possible, rather than a concern for decorative appearance. Through this approach information has been obtained about which native plants are most likely to succeed in a Christchurch garden. The first list (Table 1) prepared by Derek Cook recorded plants present in the garden in August 2000 that had survived "Christchurch frosts and dry nor'westers for 5-10 years." A list made in September 2001 recording acquisitions made since the list of August 2000 is given at the end of Table 1. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Abstract: Naree and Yantabulla stations (31,990 ha) are found 60 km south-east of Hungerford and 112 km north-west of Bourke, New South Wales (lat. 29° 55'S; long. 150°37'N). The properties occur on the Cuttaburra Creek within the Mulga Lands Bioregion. We describe the vegetation assemblages found on these properties within three hierarchical levels (Group, Alliance & Association). Vegetation levels are defined based on flexible UPGMA analysis of cover- abundance scores of all vascular plant taxa. These vegetation units are mapped based on extensive ground truthing, SPOT5 imagery interpretation and substrate. Three ‘Group’ level vegetation types are described: Mulga Complex, Shrublands Complex and Floodplain Wetlands Complex. Within these Groups nine ‘Alliances’ are described: Rat’s tail Couch – Lovegrass Grasslands, Canegrass Grasslands, Lignum – Glinus Shrublands, Coolibah – Black Box Woodlands, Turpentine – Button Grass – Windmill Grass Shrublands, Turpentine – Hop Bush – Kerosene Grass shrublands and Mulga Shrublands. The same classification systems are used to arrange the botanical collections of the Tasmanian Herbarium and by the Flora of Australia series published by the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS). For a more up-to-date classification of the flora refer to The Flora of Tasmania Online (Duretto 2009+) which currently follows APG II (2003). This census also serves as an index to The Student’s Flora of Tasmania (Curtis 1963, 1967, 1979; Curtis & Morris 1975, 1994).
