Shimane and Shimane Medical Universities amalgamated on October 1st, 2003. The new Shimane University has two main campuses, and consists of five faculties. Law and Literature, Education, Life and Environmental Science, and the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering are housed at the Matsue campus, and the Faculty of Medicine is based at the Izumo campus. The combined Shimane University now has 1,881 staff and 6,125 students, including some 170 international students as of May 1st, 2013. Shimane University now has five graduate schools (Humanities and Social Science, Education, Medicine, Science and Engineering, and Life and Environmental Science), and three doctorate graduate schools (Medicine, the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering, and the United Graduate School of Agricultural Science). In addition, the university also operates several other research centers, facilities and hospitals. In addition to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students, there are several other categories of students comprising auditors, special auditors, and research students. Since its establishment, Shimane University has endeavored to cultivate persons of ability who will contribute to the development of society. With this in mind and its historical background, the university aspires to be an international university opened to the South-East Asia and Pacific Rim regions. Shimane University has Academic Exchange Agreements with 40 universities in 13 countries. 3.Features of Graduate School The Division of Life and Environmental Science was established in April 2000, and reorganized in 2008. The division consists of three courses: Biological Science and Biotechnology, Agriculture and Forest Science, and Environmental Science and Technology. Students must take four semesters to complete a course which begins in April or October. Each student chooses one of three academic programs depending on his/her future plan: the researcher-oriented program, professional-oriented program, or local industrialist-oriented program. The Master’s degree in Life and Environmental Science is awarded to those who have earned enough credits and have submitted an approved dissertation in the fourth semester. 4.Features of the Program and Curriculum in each Field of Study Master course students will select one course out of the following 3 courses listed below depending on their study themes / consultation with academic supervisor. DIRECTIONS FOR APPLICATION FOR THE SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR DRYLAND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES WITH REFERENCE TO SDGs, 2021 (THREE-YEAR DOCTORAL COURSE) The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences Tottori University Japan The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (UGAS), Tottori University, was founded in 1989 as an independent three-year Doctoral course. The UGAS is organized on the basis of the three Master's Courses of Tottori, Shimane and Yamaguchi Universities, and the research facilities at the Universities. The UGAS is operated in close alliance and cooperation with the Master's Courses of the three constituent Universities. The Special Program (SP) for Dryland Agricultural Sciences with Reference to SDGs in the UGAS is designed for those students who have finished the Special Program of the Master's courses (Pre-Doctoral Courses) at the constituent Universities; Tottori, Shimane and Yamaguchi. Because the SP at the UGAS is to be open as of October 2021, the UGAS invites application from prospective foreign students who wish to study dryland agricultural sciences under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program. Ⅰ. PURPOSE OF THE SPECIAL PROGRAM The Special Program in Dryland Agricultural Sciences with Reference to SDGs cultivates human rsources capable of contributing to the country’s development under our educational research system from agriculture and environmental conservation in drylands to the regional developments based on SDGs. Ⅱ. FIELDS OF STUDY AND NUMBER OF STUDENTS TO BE ADMITTED 1. Fields of Study: Applications for any field in dryland agricultural sciences and related fields and related fields are accepted, provided that each applicant finds a suitable academic major advisor in the annexed "List of Supervisors and Their Research Interests".

SHIMANE UNIVERSITY PROSPECTUSS 2019 Message from the President Welcome to Shimane University! Shimane University was established as a national university in 1949 and is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Shimane University has continued to expand and currently consists of six faculties across two campuses. Matsue Campus is home to the Faculty of Law and Literature, the Faculty of Educa- tion, the Faculty of Human Sciences, the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Life and Environmental Science, in addition to all of the graduate courses belonging to these faculties. Izumo Campus comprises of the Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medical Research. Shimane University’s goal is to enable students to develop international perspectives and their ability to become leaders in each region of the world. While studying here, students are equipped with the ability to cope with diverse problems like those they encounter in modern society. They are also empow- ered to take advantage of their accumulated knowledge, their cross-cultural awareness, and their technological skills. Furthermore, I believe that an important mission of Shimane University is to contribute to international society through creative research conducted using international standards. Currently, we have more than 200 international students from various coun- tries, and they are working hard to master their specialized fields. Studying alongside Japanese friends and other international students, these students also learn Japanese traditions and culture. Shimane University is located in an area of Japan well-endowed with nature, including Lake Shinji, UNESCO Global Geopark, the Oki Islands, and Mount Sanbe. In addition, Shimane Prefecture has many historical and cultural assets, including Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, which is a World Heritage Site, Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, and Matsue Castle, which is a National Treasure.
