    2014 Election Preview I. Background on 2014 elections The 2014 election had been difficult to predict due to some dead-heat races in the Senate, but it appears that Republicans will have an edge next Tuesday in many close races and are poised to take control of Congress. The House of Representatives will stay Republican- controlled, with very few tight races due to districting. The Senate is the big wild card here as there is a great deal of uncertainty around what could happen in nine key races, just six of which could cost the Democrats their majority. Republicans should be on their way to a shoe-in election, gaining them control of both chambers of Congress due to a very unpopular 2nd term President and Congress’ low approval rating. However, because of campaign gaffes, some lack-luster candidates, and stumbles in races that should have been safe, their take-over of the Senate is in no way guaranteed. In general, Democrats need to focus on turnout/grassroots efforts, and Republicans need to focus on shoring up their base and avoiding gaffes. Things could also change a lot over the next few weeks so event at this late date, some races are very difficult to predict. II. United States House of Representatives All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for re-election. Currently, Republicans control 233 seats and Democrats control 199 seats, with 3 vacancies. The 2014 election is unlikely to change Republicans strong majority in the House and may, in fact, result in a larger number of Republican controlled seats, as they are projected to add 5-7 seats on November 4th.

I usually take the opportunity when writing this column every August to grumble about how distracted potential cinema-goers appear to be by the world’s largest arts festival that takes place in our glorious (a word which currently also describes the weather!) city every year, but this year I’m seeing it as nothing more than a challenge. A challenge, dear reader, which I feel we have risen to in impressive style with a stunning array of great cinema, much of which is, as it happens, of a ‘one-off’ nature and will likely not come around again any time soon… That sounds like I’m trying to dragoon you into coming to the cinema in August (instead of going to the Tattoo, perhaps?), and conceivably I am, but try not to see it that way… Rather, I simply wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of the must-see cinema experiences contained within these pages. In any case, cinema is surely the best of all the art forms wouldn’t you say, as well as being one of the cheaper days/nights out?     IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering Vol No 99 Year 2015 1 Tracking Temporal Community Strength in Dynamic Networks Nan Du, Xiaowei Jia, Jing Gao, Vishrawas Gopalakrishnan, and Aidong Zhang, IEEE Fellow Abstract—Community formation analysis of dynamic networks has been a hot topic in data mining which has attracted much attention. Recently, there are many studies which focus on discovering communities successively from consecutive snapshots by considering both the current and historical information. However, these methods cannot provide us with much historical or successive information related to the detected communities. Different from previous studies which focus on community detection in dynamic networks, we define a new problem of tracking the progression of the community strength - a novel measure that reflects the community robustness and coherence throughout the entire observation period. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel framework which formulates the problem as an optimization task. The proposed community strength analysis also provides foundation for a wide variety of related applications such as discovering how the strength of each detected community changes over the entire observation period. To demonstrate that the proposed method provides precise and meaningful evolutionary patterns of communities which are not directly obtainable from traditional methods, we perform extensive experimental studies on one synthetic and five real datasets: social evolution, tweeting interaction, actor relationships, bibliography and biological datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is highly effective in discovering the progression of community strengths and detecting interesting communities. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
