Previous meetings • The teams have met once before, in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup group stage, a 2-2 draw in Istanbul sending a Fenerbahçe side coached by Brazilian legend Zico through to the round of 32 at their opponents' expense. • Eintracht have played four other matches against Turkish opposition and are unbeaten at home (W1 D1), while Fenerbahçe's one win in 11 games against German clubs came in their most recent away fixture, a 4-2 victory at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 2 of the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League. A 0-3 defeat in the Istanbul return did not stop Aykut Kocaman's team from topping the group, and they would go on to reach the semi-finals in the club's most successful European campaign. Form guide Eintracht • Having been absent from Europe in 2020/21, Eintracht Frankfurt are back for a third UEFA Europa League group stage campaign in four seasons – and fourth in all – thanks to their fifth-placed finish in the Bundesliga. They have since replaced coach Adi Hütter with another Austrian, Oliver Glasner, who was in charge of fourth-placed Wolfsburg last term. • Eintracht have qualified for the knockout phase on each of their previous three group stage appearances, notably reaching the semi-finals in 2018/19, when they were denied a place in the final only by a penalty shoot-out defeat against eventual winners Chelsea. They won all six of their group games that season – the only German club to achieve that feat – but despite accumulating just half as many points the following season still went through to the round of 32, where they overcame Salzburg (4-1 h, 2-2 a) before going out to Basel (0-3 h, 0-1 a). • The 1980 UEFA Cup winners claimed maximum points from their first six home games in the UEFA Europa League group stage but lost two out of three in 2019/20 – to Arsenal (0-1) and Vitória Guimarães (2-3). Their home record in the competition as a whole, including qualifying, is W14 D3 L3, the defeats having all come in the last five matches. Fenerbahçe • Third in the 2020/21 Turkish Süper Lig, two points behind both champions Beşiktaş and runners-up Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe are back in Europe after a two-season absence to make a sixth appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage. • The Istanbul club entered this season's competition in the play-offs where, under new Portuguese coach Vítor Pereira, they overcame HJK 6-2 on aggregate (1-0 h, 5-2 a), and will be looking to maintain their perfect record in the UEFA Europa League group stage, having qualified for the knockout phase on all five previous participations, most recently in 2018/19. Their standout season in the competition was that 2012/13 campaign, which was halted one round before the final by Benfica. • Fenerbahçe's play-off victory in Helsinki ended a six-match winless run on their European travels (D1 L5). They won all of their first six away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League group stage, and were unbeaten in the first ten (W7 D3), but have lost three and drawn one of the last four. Links and trivia • There are four German players in the Fenerbahçe squad – Mesut Özil, Max Meyer, Serdar Dursun and recent arrival from Salzburg, Mërgem Berisha, all of whom began their careers in their homeland. Özil was a German international from 2009 to 2018, helping his country win the 2014 FIFA World Cup. • Özil made his Bundesliga debut for Schalke in a 1-1 draw at home to Eintracht on 12 August 2006. He and Meyer have both scored league goals against the Frankfurt club. • Several other members of Vítor Pereira's squad have also played in Germany, including South Americans José Sosa and Luiz Gustavo, who both won the Bundesliga with Bayern München. • Frankfurt boss Glasner coached Berisha at LASK in 2017/18 and his new Fenerbahçe team-mate Marcel Tisserand at Wolfsburg in 2019/20. • Glasner was the assistant coach of a Salzburg side featuring current Eintracht players Martin Hinteregger and Stefan Ilsanker that lost a UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie to Fenerbahçe in 2013/14 (1-1 h, 1-3 a). • While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season's group stage, Eintracht are one of five clubs involved to have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup; PSV Eindhoven (Group B), Napoli (C), Galatasaray (E) and fellow German side Bayer Leverkusen (G) are the others. 4 Eintracht Frankfurt - Fenerbahçe SK Thursday 16 September 2021 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Frankfurt stadion, Frankfurt am Main 5 Eintracht Frankfurt - Fenerbahçe SK Thursday 16 September 2021 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Frankfurt stadion, Frankfurt am Main Team facts Eintracht Frankfurt Formed: 1899 Nickname: Adler (Eagles) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • European Cup: (1960) • UEFA Cup (1): 1980 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 1 (1959) German Cup: 5 (2018) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2020/21: did not take part in UEFA competition 2019/20: round of 16 2018/19: semi-finals 2017/18: did not take part in UEFA competition 2016/17: did not take part in UEFA competition 2015/16: did not take part in UEFA competition 2014/15: did not take part in UEFA competition 2013/14: round of 32 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 9-0: Eintracht v Widzew Łódź 30/09/92, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-6: Dinamo Moskva v Eintracht 14/09/93, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-3 twice, most recently v Basel 12/03/20, UEFA Europa League round of 16 first leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: Brøndby v Eintracht 19/09/90, UEFA Cup first round first leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 9-0: Eintracht v Widzew Łódź (see above) • Biggest away win 0-6: Dinamo Moskva v Eintracht (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 0-3 twice, most recently v Basel (see above) • Heaviest
