*one per family, and while supplies last Welcome to Blanco, the Lavender Capital of Texas®! As Executive Director of the Blanco Chamber of Commerce, I hear so many comments about the special and unique character of Blanco. I believe it is a combination of the friendliness of the people, the simple charm of the town square, the repose of the Blanco River, the beauty of the rugged Hill Country and area ranches, and the lure of lavender. All this, combined with a community rich in history and accepting of diversity makes Blanco a won- derful place to live and work. It is what captivates the hearts and curiosity of all who pass through our community. In any community there is a local “flavor” that makes it special, memo- rable, and leaves one wanting more. Blanco is no exception. Named the Lav- ender Capital of Texas® on August 1, 2006, the Blanco community welcomed a new element -- lavender -- to add to its beauty, history and character. Romantic and rugged, relaxing and intriguing, healing and flavorful – these characteristics of lavender also define Blanco. Lavender’s simple beauty reminds us of who we are today and what originally attracted settlers to this area. As one approaches the crest of the Blanco Valley and takes in the re- gion’s beauty, the feeling of being home fills the heart and soul, much like the beauty and scent of lavender that intrigues the senses and relaxes the body. This year we present Blanco Lavender Days, our new month-long celebra- tion of lavender. Each weekend in June, two of our six growers host special events at their farms. The exception is the 2nd weekend in June when we “paint the town purple” during our 5th Annual Blanco Lavender Festival. Along with the residents, Chamber members, and business owners of Blanco, I welcome you to share in the month-long lavender experience, in- cluding Blanco Lavender Days and Blanco Lavender Festival. Explore, enjoy, relax, and rejuvenate in the romantic lure of lavender provided by local grow- ers and in the friendly spirit and small-town goodness of Blanco! Welcome, Photos by A. Blanco Lavender Farms 9 Author Jeannie Ralston invites you to ... “The Lavender Queen” Tour of the Texas Hill Country When I wrote about all the wonderful spots in the Texas Hill Country in The Unlikely Lavender Queen, I tried to describe them so that you’d really feel like you were there. But now I can do even better than words. I can actually take you to some of the key places. Please join me on Friday, June 12th, as I take readers through the heart of the Hill Coun- try, from Blanco to Fredericksburg and Welfare, and talk about the significant events that happened at each location. If you get me started, I’ll talk about growing lavender and maybe even things that didn’t even make it into the book! Woohoo! The tour includes a stop at the dear-to-my-heart stone barn my husband Robb and I renovated, which served as the setting for most of what happens in the book and was also the first home of our lavender farm, Hill Country Lavender. As you may know from reading the book, we have since sold the stone barn. This is the first time the new owner is opening the house to the public. The private tour coincides with the Blanco Lavender Festival (www.blancolavenderfest. com), which runs June 12 through 14. As you recall from the book, Robb and I helped get the festival started. Now it’s a really big deal, and I hope you join me. Highlights of The Lavender Queen Tour A stop at the current site of Hill Country Lavender, lunch at the Blanco Bowling Club Café, a visit to the two-story stone barn where we lived for 10 years, a tour of the Blanco town square, including Brieger Pottery (www.briegerpottery.com), a visit to Luckenbach, dinner at the celebrated Welfare Café, and a special gift from Hill Country Lavender. Now, 75 years later, Blanco State Park officials along with members of the Blanco community celebrate the park’s “75th diamond anniversary” this summer. The day-long celebration, date to be announced, begins at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony followed by presentations by local historians on the CCC labor that created Blanco State Park. Craft demonstrations are held throughout the day, illustrating the blacksmithing, stonesmithing, and other CCC skills and techniques used to create the park pavilion and other landmarks in the park. A children’s area is open all day, demon- strating children’s games and illustrating the life of a child during the 1930’s and 1940’s. Depression-era music is also featured, with many of the songs written by CCC workers to describe “life in the camp.” The celebration also includes a cake-cutting to honor living CCC members, as well as past park superintendents. Blanco State Park was created when local landowners offered property to the state. Texas, in turn, offered the land for the development of a state park. The CCC was a pub- lic work relief program for unemployed men and focused on natural resource conserva- tion from 1933 to 1942. As part of the New Deal legislation proposed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the CCC was designed 1st to aid relief of high unemployment stemming from the Great Depression; and second to carry out a broad natural resource conservation program on national, state, and municipal lands such as what was to become Blanco State Park. CCC Company #854 worked hard to create what is now a popular destination in Blanco County. Everyone who has fond memories of Blanco State Park is invited to attend the 75th Anniversary Celebration and record favorite memories of the park. An area of the park, set aside with a booth and recording equipment is designed to capture an oral history of Blanco State Park. The 75th Anniversary Celebration is free of charge and open to the public. Parking is limited. For more information, check the at www.tpwd.state.tx.us or call 830.833.4333.

“Blanco Lavender Lights” – Celebrate a Hometown Christmas Save the Date... Nov 27th - 29th 2009 In response to the love of lavender and to enhance Blanco’s trademark as the Lavender Capital of Texas®, the Blanco Chamber of Commerce is hosting its sec- ond annual Blanco Lavender Lights. The season runs from Thanksgiving until the New Year and is designed for tourists and residents alike. The Friday after Thanksgiving (November 27th) is “Purple Friday” (as a play on Black Friday), and all merchants and guests are encouraged to wear something purple (and receive extra-special treatment)! Lavender Lights Christmas Market spans 3 days on the Courthouse grounds and hosts over 30 booths. Local restau- rants prepare enticing special holiday fare for dinners. On Friday evening, guest are invited to enjoy the traditional Old Blanco County Courthouse Lighting and Open House Around the Square from 5pm- 9pm. Merchants will stay open late and serve refreshments throughout the night. Shoppers are encouraged to participate in a “visit all of the shops” program and, in exchange, receive a free gift from the Chamber and qualify for other drawings. Horse-drawn carriage rides and performing musicians are on the square. Santa is upstairs in the Courthouse, taking requests from dreamy-eyed children. Blanco Lavender Lights - Fri. - Sun. Blanco Lavender Festival 11 Blanco Celebrates All Things Lavender All Year Long The 5th Annual Blanco Lavender Festival showcases the area’s newest agricultural industry in a county that has a rich agricultural and ranching tradition. In 2008, the town and the county of Blanco celebrated its sesquicentennial year: “Celebrating 150 Years of Friendly.” Today, the area’s cotton fields of years past have been replaced with the rich color and scent of lavender. Native to the Mediterranean, lavender is now grown worldwide. Dating back to antiq- uity, lavender has been used to scent bathwater and enhance body care products. Egyp- tians used lavender oil for perfume. Ancient Romans used lavender to enhance cooking and to scent the air and provide soothing baths. Lavender is derived from the Latin “lavare,” meaning “to wash” or “to bathe.” Lavender oil has been used throughout history as a versatile and popular essential oil for aromatherapy. Charles VI of France demanded lavender-scented pillows each night. Elizabeth I required fresh lavender flowers each day. Today, clinical studies confirm lavender is a relaxation aid and stress reliever. Re- searchers note its ability to curb depression and irritability. It also has soothing character- Photo by K. Kaderli istics for insect bites, minor burns, and muscle aches, and it has antiseptic properties for use on cuts and scrapes. Lavender is also a favorite among herbalists and culinary experts. As the Lavender Capital of Texas®, Blanco is proud to celebrate all things lavender during the Blanco Lavender Festival, Blanco Lavender Days, Blanco Lavender Lights, and throughout the year. For example, lavender products can be found at almost all of the gift shops around town, and Blanco’s town square is brightly lit with purple and white lights during Blanco Lavender Lights, a holiday lights celebration beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving. A variety of special events is planned, including the Old Blanco County Courthouse Lighting Ceremony and Christmas Around the Square. Zydeco Blanco will strum up some zydeco tunes, as well as a variety of cover songs to get people dancing! Most of their songs blend the influences of Louisiana music with the feel of life in the Texas Hill Country. Originally, a duo formed in 1997 when accordion player Leif Oines met rub board player Harvey Trahan. Oines had previously led the successful and energetic band Zydeco Faux Pas. Harvey Trahan, a French Cajun, came to the valley via Houston, where he played harmonica in several blues bands. From early perfor- mances in their Hill Country community, they met other musicians and incor- porated them into the band. A rhythm section was first added to the band: Steve Lamphier on bass and Brandon Aly on drums. Both had played together in another local band, Jamadillo. Their fellow Jamadillo bandmate, Larry Woods, was soon added on guitar. The addition of saxophone player, Brad Houser, (also of the New Bohemians and Critters Buggin) completed the lineup. The “Zydeco Blanco” CD, Photo by K. Kaderli released in 2004, can be purchased at the festival or at www.zydecoblanco.com. www.zydecoblanco.com

It is a food lover’s dream.” Her classes sell out quickly, especially the “Hill Country Excursion.” This class tours by van and shops the local farmers markets, wineries, goat cheese producers, lavender farms, and other foodie venues. Later that day, the group spreads out all their goodies and practices what Sibby calls “random acts of cooking.” The group chefs then create 8 to 12 entrees for their own delightful, sit-down dinner. No two classes are alike, and many new friendships are formed in the kitchen.Individuals or private parties may book any of her classes, enabling up to 12 people to get hands-on cooking experience. Six ad- ditional people may join as “spec-tators,” the culinary equivalent to couch potatoes. In addition to cooking classes, Onion Creek Kitchens’ growing product line, which includes her popular Salsa Verde Italiano and Juniper Provence Spice Mix, is sold online and through local retail shops and farmers markets. Recently added, luxurious casitas and studios rentals at Juniper Hills Farm have well-stocked refrigerators and peaceful Hill Country views. Sibby also sits on the board of several regional founda- tions. Every October she usually judges a cooking event at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, one of several state festivals at which she presents and sells. Of the several busi- nesses Sibby has owned in Dallas, she continues to “steer the ship” at her Dallas Affaires Cake Company of 23 years. Sibby plans other culinary-inspired projects, such as a new larger Culinary Center on the property and an upcoming cookbook that captures the Hill Country spirit and flair. “It makes me happy to share the beauty of the Hill Country with visitors,” Sibby says. “People comment on how wonderful life is here and how friendly everyone is in this area. It is a very rewarding part of my life.”
