Your opportunity to be steeped in local tradition will be here soon, but you must register if you want to get in on this fun-filled local game. Crossage takes place in the streets of Chièvres and surrounding villages Ash Wednesday, March 1, starting at noon. The city of Chièvres will be closed to all traffic, and no parking will be permitted. Crossage is a sport that could be described as a cross between golf and croquet. Teams compete against one another as they try to hit the kegs with the wooden, oblong "ball" (chôlette) and the wooden mallet (rabot) in as few hits as possible. The entire course covers about 30 kegs. Participants must obtain the requisite sports equipment as well as insurance before they are allowed to play, and the registration deadline is next week. Cost is €33 for a rabot and a chôlette, and €4 for insur- ance if you preregister or €5 if you register the day.
