I have been reading the Girl Genius comic for several years, so a novelisation was of I already read and Girl Genius: Agatha H and the Airship City the comic book version of this story, but I must say I love real books over comic books any day. It has the same amount of action that was portrayed in the comic and who doesn't love a girl who can fend for herself? Philip "Phil" Foglio born May 1, is an American cartoonist and comic book artist best known for his humorous science fiction and fantasy work. The Foglios founded Studio Foglio and began to produce their own graphic novels in the 's. Agatha H. Kaja FoglioPhil Foglio. The Industrial Revolution has escalated into all-out warfare. It has been eighteen years since the Heterodyne Boys, benevolent adventurers and inventors, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Today, Europe is ruled by the Sparks, dynasties of mad scientists ruling over — and terrorizing — the hapless population with their bizarre inventions and unchecked power, while the downtrodden dream of the Hetrodynes' return. At Transylvania Polygnostic University, a pretty, young student named Agatha Clay seems to have nothing but bad luck. Incapable of building anything that actually works, but dedicated to her studies, Agatha seems destined for a lackluster career as a minor lab assistant. But when the University is overthrown by the ruthless tyrant Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, Agatha finds herself a prisoner aboard his massive airship Castle Wulfenbach — and it begins to look like she might carry a spark of Mad Girl Genius: Agatha H and the Airship City after all. Agatha H. and the Airship City: Girl Genius, Book One - Kaja Foglio, Phil Foglio - Google книги It follows the main character Agatha Heterodyne through an alternate-history Victorian-style " steampunk " setting, although elements veer from what is usually thought of as steampunk. Kaja Foglio describes it as " gaslamp fantasy " instead to suggest its more fantastic style. As well as the comics, Girl Genius: Agatha H and the Airship City Foglios have also written four Girl Genius novels, all published by Night Shade Booksand two games based on the world have been made. The Girl Genius: Agatha H and the Airship City has been described as steampunk[1] [2] [3] [4] with reviewers for Wired describing it as a "mosh of Victorian era, magic and emerging technology" [3] and "steampunk to the core", [1] but co-creator Kaja Foglio dislikes the term and instead coined the term " gaslamp fantasy " to describe the work. Kaja said in a blog post that when Girl Genius was first coming out, there was a comic called Steampunk and she wanted to avoid confusion. She added that "we have no punk, and we have more than just steam, [so] using a different name seemed appropriate. Girl Genius is set in an alternate-universe Europe [4] with Industrial Revolution-like surroundings, airships, and mad scientists called Sparks. Girl Genius tells the story of Agatha Clay, a student and apprentice at Transylvania Polygnostic University whose experiments never work, until she encounters an electromagnetic pulse and is robbed of her locket. Agatha Heterodyne whose surname is based on a real scientific concept learns to mix scientific genius, a streak of true heroism and an obsessive possessiveness for what she considers her own in order to claim her monstrous heritage and Girl Genius: Agatha H and the Airship City, even as the eyes of all Europa watch her carefully in case she turns out to be one of the monsters herself. The idea for the style of Girl Genius came about when Kaja Foglio went through some of Phil's loose drawings, saying in an interview: "I was going through all of Phil's old files and I was filing all of the old sketches, and I was coming across weird airships and cats in tophats with walking canes, and all of this wonderful Victoriana sci-fi stuff We both like the tropes associated with mad science, and I really enjoy drawing fiddly Girl Genius: Agatha H and the Airship City gizmos". Phil Foglio states that plotting for Girl Genius started inand it was first published in I was printed in Januaryfollowed closely by the monochrome Issue 1 in February. The first three printed issues which make up Volume 1 were in black and white. Subsequent printed and web comics were in color. Volume 4 by Laurie E. Smith, and all subsequent volumes by Cheyenne Wright. In an interview recorded in Januaryshortly before they began releasing pages of volume 8 of Girl Genius on their web site, the Foglios stated that they expected the climax of Volume 8 to be the rough equivalent of "the end of the first season," and that it would provide a logical break in case of author catastrophe and a fresh jumping-on point for new readers. The webcomic, as well as the initial printed issues, have been collected into printed volumes, and in some cases those volumes have been collected into printed omnibuses. Unless stated in the notes below, the books reprint works first published as the webcomic. The Foglios have written four Girl Genius prose novels, which follow the same story as the comics:. The prose novels are published by Night Shade Books. Agatha Heterodyne has also appeared in illustrations and by name in the role-playing book GURPS Illuminati University sourcebook, which was illustrated by the Foglios and predates the release of the comic. In it was reported that Felicia D. Henderson had optioned the rights to Girl Genius and was adapting it into a movie. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. For the general term, see child prodigy. She also comes from a line of possibly evil, possibly insane scientists who left her a castle full of mysterious and sentient contraptions. So, you know, some pretty interesting things happen in her world, which is exactly why love reading about Girl Genius: Agatha H and the Airship City adventures. Add to Bag. More novelizations followed the most recent, Agatha H. He and Kaja met in and soon founded Studio Foglio. During this time, the pair also contributed card art to Magic: The Gatheringwhich is probably why their names look so familiar. She kept coming across airships and characters that looked like they were pulled from the pages of a Victorian sci-fi comic. The pair had been jonesing to start a new series with a female protagonist, so Agatha H. An evil baron rose to power during this time, and now people struggle to scrape out a living in a land filled with gear technology and tyranny.

The modern comic derives from what many term "the golden age," specifically with the introduction of Superman. The "man of steel" triggered a fascination with comic book heroes; heroes who took flawed forms in the 1960s. Today, the comic serves not only as a vehicle for super-heroes, but also as a channel for political thought, education, alternative culture, and critiques of society. Contemporary interest in the comic trade, spurred by conventions and independent distribution, fosters a creative environment in which new genres and edgy content drive the scene. Master’s Thesis for English Literature, American and British Studies Presented to the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages At the University of Oslo Spring term 2020 Thesis supervisor: Rebecca Scherr 1 2 The tools of Webcomics: The “infinite canvas” and other innovations Håvard Knutsen Nøding 3 Copyright Håvard Knutsen Nøding 2020 The tools of Webcomics: The “infinite canvas” and other innovations Håvard Knutsen Nøding https://www.duo.uio.no/ Print: Reprosentralen, University of Oslo 4 Abstract The main focus of this thesis is to introduce and offer insight into the new and innovative ways webcomics build on and diverge from their print counterparts, as well as how these new tools can make telling new kinds of stories and making new kinds of comics possible. I have divided the thesis into three chapters, each with a focus on one aspect of the comics medium which webcomics bring innovations to through a new, medium-specific tool. The first chapter looks at time and motion, and how webcomics change the readers perception of the passage of time in the comic through the use of tools like the “infinite canvas”, as well as others, such as animation. The second chapter discusses composition, and how the fundamental design of the page and the structure of the storytelling is altered through the use of tools like the “infinite canvas”. Finally, the third chapter analyzes how webcomics can sometimes move away from, or outright break the conventional relationship between text and image.
