Three eager individuals gathered in a small recently bought storefront office space at 1170 Albany Avenue1 in the North End of Hartford. They were focused. They were determined to deeply investigate, unearth, and eliminate institutional racism in the city of Hartford. The first step was this map of where it was at – locating power. They cut pieces of paper with lists of the Boards of Directors of all the major corporations in Hartford – the insurance companies, the banks, the real estate agencies. Gluing names on the wall they realized that names were repeated on Boards across companies. -

"Citizens In The Making": Black Philadelphians, The Republican Party And Urban Reform, 1885-1913 Abstract “Citizens in the Making” broadens the scope of historical treatments of black politics at the end of the nineteenth century by shifting the focus of electoral battles away from the South, where states wrote disfranchisement into their constitutions. Philadelphia offers a municipal-level perspective on the relationship between African Americans, the Republican Party, and political and social reformers, but the implications of this study reach beyond one city to shed light on a nationwide effort to degrade and diminish black citizenship. I argue that black citizenship was constructed as alien and foreign in the urban North in the last decades of the nineteenth century and that this process operated in tension with and undermined the efforts of black Philadelphians to gain traction on their exercise of the franchise. For black Philadelphians at the end of the nineteenth century, the franchise did not seem doomed or secure anywhere in the nation. -

REACHING OuT TO A RAcE: MARCUS GARVEY AND MAss COMMUNICATION THROUGH THE LENSES OF SERVANT LEADERSHIP -SCOTT FINNIE EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION In light of the career and work of Marcus Garvey, the leadership skills he employed help to amplify Robert Greenleaf' s description of the true and genuine servant-leader. In his classic book published in 1977, Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature ofLegitimate Power and Greatness, Greenleaf identifies a series of attributes and virtues necessary to fulfill the role of "the great leader" who is "seen as a servant first" (p. 7). In his eyes, the concept and dynamics of leadership need an urgent re-definition and conceptual realignment if collective entities are to reach the noble goals to which they aspire: A fresh critical look is being taken at the issues of power and authority, and people are beginning to learn, however haltingly, to relate to one another in less coercive and more creatively supporting ways. A new moral principle is emerging which holds that the only authority deserving one's allegiance is that which is freely and knowingly granted by the led to the leader in response to, and in proportion to, the clearly evident ser vant stature of the leader. (pp. 9-10) The following pages will be an exploration into the leadership methodology of Marcus Garvey against the backdrop of Greenleaf's servant-leadership themes. GARVEYISM (W) Instructor: Dr. Neil Roberts Spring 2011 Williams College AFR338.01/PSCI338.01 Tu/Thurs, 11:20-12:35 PM Office hours: Wed, 2-4:00PM [email protected] Hollander Hall 213, x4772 Course description: This course explores the life, work, political thought, and activism associated with the Jamaican Pan-Africanist Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the transnational movement— Garveyism—that Garvey ushered into the modern world. We will investigate the founding of Garveyism on the island of Jamaica, the evolution of Garveyism during the early twentieth- century across the Americas and in Africa, Garveyism in Europe in the mid-twentieth century, and the contemporary branches of the Garvey movement in our own late modern times. The implications of Garvey’s conflict with W.E.B. Du Bois and the subsequent cleavages in political thought and allegiances among their respective adherents will be addressed, along with various other core issues including: the relationship between race, nation and empire; transnationalism; the meaning of power; the limitations of understanding Garveyism by the phrase “Back-to-Africa”; the moral philosophies of respect, reparation, and redemption; prophetic political theory; Pan-Africanism; the impact of Garveyism on political theological movements such as the Nation of Islam and the Rastafari; women in the Garvey movement; and Garveyite strategies for forging models of political solidarity in dark times. Course requirements: Participants are expected to attend class regularly and complete readings for class listed on the syllabus. You must bring to every session the required reading for the day. I will generally begin each class summarizing briefly the previous session’s main points, and shall proceed to lecture for a portion of time about the current day’s topic. -

INTRODUCTION The collections of the Austin History Center contain valuable materials about Austin’s African American communities, although there is much that remains to be documented. The materials in this bibliography are arranged by collection unit of the Austin History Center. Within each collection unit, items are arranged in shelf-list order. This bibliography is one in a series of updates of the original 1979 bibliography. It reflects the addition of materials to the Austin History Center based on the recommendations and donations of many generous individuals and support groups. The Austin History Center card catalog supplements the online computer catalog by providing analytical entries to information in periodicals and other materials in addition to listing collection holdings by author, title, and subject. These entries, although indexing ended in the 1990s, lead to specific articles and other information in sources that would otherwise be time-consuming to find and could be easily overlooked. -

HARVEY University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Social Work A discussion of The Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA & ACL) founded by Marcus Gar- vey in 1915 is presented. The organization provided social services for people of African ancestry in both the U.S. and other countries as well. An analysis of this organizationoccurs, citing the functions of subgroups like the Universal African Legions and the Universal African Motor Corps. This organization serves as a historic model for contemporary community development. The Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League was founded in 1915 in Jamaica, West Indies by Marcus Garvey. Garvey immigrated to Harlem, New York a year later, locating the UNIA and ACL headquarters in Liberty Hall. -

Although surveying literature on a particular research topic is often considered incidental because the process has become more simplified with advances in technology, conducting and crafting such a literature review are crucial steps to a researcher’s/scholar’s preparation for entrance into current discussions in his or her field. This process, as it provides an accounting of what has been published on a topic, acknowledges accredited scholars and researchers; therefore, because the literature review does not function as merely a list of resources with summaries (which is the sole function of databases), it conveys to the reader what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. -

Ethos and African American Literature Richard Schur Department of Languages and Literature, Drury University, Springfield, MO 65802, USA; [email protected] Received: 21 May 2018; Accepted: 26 July 2018; Published: 10 August 2018 Abstract: The African American rhetorical tradition could be described as a shelter in an alien environment or as a way station on a long journey. A focus on ethos suggests that such a narrow approach to African American literature cannot do justice to these literary texts: how these writers employ images and symbols, craft and deploy examine identities, blend, criticize, and create traditions, explore contemporary issues, and create community. Because of cultural and racist narratives, African Americans could not simply use either the pre-Socratic or Aristotelian approaches to ethos in their fight for social justice. This essay demonstrates how a postclassical approach to ethos that draws on Bourdieu’s concept of habitus and is focused on community-building and self-healing is central to the African American literature and rhetoric. Introduction In a provocative essay from 1997 entitled, “Home,” Nobel-prize winning author Toni Morrison compares living and writing in the United States as an African American woman with occupying a house rather than a home. For Morrison, cultural memory shapes contemporary action, and her characters cannot escape how America’s racial history has shaped their lives, coloring how they see the world and influencing their interactions with both African Americans and whites. -
