The creator of Sydney’s first self-sufficient house and author of LAYING ‘Sustainable House’ said community actions such as Sunday’s event help to secure government support for the fight against global warming. “A change is clearly happening among ordinary people like us but the politicians just don’t hear it,” he said “they only hear the people that have the money to lobby them. LOCAL “But I think bit by bit there’s a really strong voice being given now to people who are doing this.” Created by the Nature Conservation Council, the event will see hundreds of thousands of people across the country walk to raise awareness about carbon pollution. Sydneysiders will trek from the CBD’s Belmore Park up Elizabeth Street to Bathurst Street then to Castlereagh Street and back to Belmore Park. An estimated 15 to 20 thousand Sydney residents joined up to 90 thousand participants Australia-wide last year and the NCC hopes to see about 30 thousand this year. NCC Chief Executive Officer, Pepe Clarke, said the event puts government members on notice to develop a plan of action to reduce carbon pollution and address climate change.

In the daytime, Devonshire St is a pleasant tree- lined boulevard for local workers. At night, it’s near empty, almost abandoned some nights, and a darkly suitable gateway to the night-time theatrics of Surry Hills. The Gaelic Club is a major venue for local and international bands. Up the road on Chalmers St for many years was the Musician’s Club, sometimes a mix, often a clash of cultures between established musos and more naïve, but artful, new wave exponents 2 Garage, thrash & middle class punk On the corner of Elizabeth St is the Strawberry Hills Hotel. Sitting directly on top of the historic Sydney Tank Stream — wandering drinkers can see it downstairs and smell it at any level — the hotel has seen as much musical change as any venue in the area.

  • From the Publisher GREG T ROSS
from the publisher GREG T ROSS First of all let me welcome you to the Anzac Day/Winter edition of The Last Post. This is the magazine’s 16th issue and also its biggest yet. We start with forewords from Australian War Memorial Director Brendan Nelson and RSL National CEO Georgie Macris. Brendan has provided The Last Post’s foreword since Anzac Day 2014, so this is a birthday of sorts for the both of us. This is Georgie’s first foreword and we look forward to more from this modern and forward-thinking CEO. Sean Flynn, son of actor Sean Flynn, was a war photographer during the Vietnam War and friend of Tim Page. Tim himself is a photographer of some note, both in war and as a social commentary. Sean disappeared during the war, believed captured and killed by the Viet Cong. His camera, a Nikon Leica went missing too. The camera was recently found and Tim Page, who lived with Sean in Saigon, has written an amazing piece on the history of the camera, the war and his bonding friendship with Sean. In February I attended the 5th Annual Elder Abuse Conference in Sydney. Numerous representatives from sectors that deal with elders spoke on the matter over two days at Sofitel Wentworth. I interviewed conference ambassador Sue Pieters-Hawke on the floor of the conference area and Jane Caro by phone a few days later. Both Sue and Jane speak with me about the areas of potential and real examples of elder abuse and ways as a society we can improve the lot of those over a certain age who are or feel vulnerable.
