By Kadara Mahan and Bobbi Moses The Black History Month as- sembly theme is Living in Color. Afro-American history teacher Jas- mine Flowers has planned a few special acts for the assembly, which is February 28. “We’ll be having skits and our very own cypher,” Flowers said. “Also, the Little T-Birds will be doing something very special.” A Few Good Men will be participating as Black Panther Party members; there will be dancers, people partaking in skits like Marcus Garvey meets Booker T. Washington, saying Freedom quotes, and reading Willie Lynch letter. The assembly, which will be host- ed by Jared Gist and Journei Bridgemon, will be featuring just Thornwood students. “It’ll be good for everyone to see the tal- ent we possess in this building,” Flowers said. The assembly will show different aspects from the previous Black History assemblies. “It is very student centered,” Flowers said. “It is also being planned and put on by a group of passionate young kings and queens.” Students will receive a lot knowledge out of the assembly. “Pride and knowledge, but the main goal is pride.” Flowers said. “I believe if our students knew more about their heritage, they will realize their potential, which in turn will increase a positive change in our young people’s thought process.” Flowers ended up planning the event because she asked and inter- viewed; then, she received the position. Fashion teacher Max- ine Lane and her students are assist- ing with the wardrobe for the assembly. 2 VIEWPOINTS

Sports 7 Moore sets history by being first female wrestler By Jaylin Williams Freshman Kirsten Moore is the first fe- male wrestler at Thornwood High School. “I’ve always enjoyed doing fighting as a sport,” Moore said. “It’s a big thing in my family.” Moore had to meet the requirements just like any other wrestler. “I had to be able keep up with the exercise the coach gave us,” Moore said. Even though there weren’t many expectations on Moore try- ing out, she was still supported and made the team. “No one expected me to actually try out,” Moore said. “The coaches supported me on trying my hardest to keep up with the guys.” Moore still has to follow the same rules as the others wrestlers, so she has to wrestle people in her weight class just like everybody else. “I weigh 120, so I usually go up against 120-126,” Moore said. Moore’s first match made her grow as a wrestler and motivated her to improve. “He was a boy my age named Lewis. I didn’t win, but the ex- perience was great,” Moore said. “I’ve grown a lot since then.” Moore’s hard work finally paid off when she had her first victory. “I felt great,” Moore said. “Being in a male dominated sport is hard when it comes to my confidence, so beating him made me feel proud of myself.” Over time Moore begin to feel com- fortable around the male wrestlers as well. “It bothered me a lot being the only girl,” Moore said. “I’ve grown so close to all the guys that it doesn’t bother me anymore. They push me to do better.” Since Moore is female, she can’t do everything that the boys do. “I usually change my clothes and put my uniform on in the bathroom,” Moore said. Moore hasn’t faced any sexist people saying she can’t wrestle, but some wrestlers act different when wrestling her. “I haven’t had anyone not wrestle me because I’m a girl; I have had people acting different,” Moore said. “They’re softer with me.” A struggle Moore faces being a wrestle is her body. “Being a girl can be hard sometimes because I feel the need to cover up all the time,” Moore said. The hardest thing about being a wrestler to Moore is staying positive, and not letting the pressure get to her. “The hardest thing is maintaining a good confidence level. Being the only girl is a lot of pressure. I have something to prove to myself as well as oth- ers,” Moore said. “It’s hard a lot of times, but I’ve been making things happen.
