BACKSTORY: Finance chief richest, DepEd head poorest in Aquino Cabinet but… Republic Act No. 6713, known as the “Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees” and which was passed in February 1989, requires public officials to file their SALNs to promote accountability and honorable service in the government. In Philippine history, misfiled or dubious SALNs have served as evidence of graft and corruption within the three branches of government. Here are the #InquirerSeven facts you need to know about the SALN: A SALN is essentially a “declaration of one’s assets (i.e. cars, houses, cash in bank, etc), liabilities (i.e. loans, debts, etc) including business and financial interests of a public official, of his or her spouse, and of his or her unmarried children under 18 years old still living in their parents’ household. The basis for the SALN is the 1987 Philippine Constitution and RA 6713. READ: Villar, Senate’s wealthiest, gets richer; Escudero ‘poorest’ SALNs must be filed on three separate occasions: Within 30 days after a public official assumes office, on or before April 30 of every year, and within 30 days after separation from the office. Government officials file their SALNs at different offices: READ: Supreme Court releases SALN of justices; Jardeleza is richest Public officials or employees are obliged to disclose any relatives in government in their SALNs. Gifts, donations, inheritance or other property received at no cost must also be listed at their fair market value and assessed value. Failure to declare an asset is a ground for dismissal from government service. For example, Sen. Sonny Trillanes’s accusation that then presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte’s failed to declare a BPI bank account allegedly containing P211 million in his previous SALN could have jeopardized his presidential candidacy. BACKSTORY: Trillanes: Duterte didn’t declare P211M in SALN Anyone can request a copy of the SALN including news and media outfits for dissemination of information to the public. However, it is prohibited to use the SALN for commercial purposes or acts vaguely defined as “contrary to morals or public policy.” Should any person request a copy of any SALN, he or she is required to pay a fee for the reproduction, mailing and certification of the statement. A copy of a public official’s SALN can be requested through the National Ombudsman’s Office or the Civil Service Commission. Just submit an accomplished SALN request form, two government-issued ID and an authorization letter or Special Power of Attorney for representative. The SALN has been instrumental in bringing even the highest public officials, such as the president and chief justice, down from their positions. In fact, two out of three impeachment trials in the history of the Philippines involved the SALN: the impeachment trials of former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada and former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona. BACKSTORY: Senate votes 20-3 to convict Corona Former President Joseph Estrada’s perjury and plunder case was supported by his inaccurate declaration of his assets including his bank account under the alias “Jose Velarde.” Chief Justice Renato Corona’s impeachment case centered on his failure to declare his multi-million properties in his SALN. 8 TV networks allowed to broadcast Duterte inauguration live (1.00/2) DAVAO CITY – President- elect Rodrigo Duterte has approved the request of broadcast networks for access to his June 30 inauguration so that they could broadcast the historic event live, the incoming presidential communications secretary Martin Andanar said on Wednesday. Andanar told reporters here that broadcast companies would be allowed to cover the event from a “strategic space” on the grounds of Malacañang. “After serious consideration, the organizing committee of the Inauguration 2016 has decided to approve the request of the national broadcasting companies to have a strategic space on Malacañang grounds,” Andanar said. Andanar said that journalists could do their stand-uppers near Gate 6 during the inauguration inside the Rizal Hall. He said Duterte’s inaugural speech was being finalized as of Wednesday . “The President has full editorial control of his speech,” Andanar said. He said in jest there would be no expletives, for which Duterte had been previously criticized during his extemporaneous speeches. Andanar added the new President might use a mix of English, Filipino and Cebuano. And for a person used to doing unscripted speeches, Duterte might use a teleprompter for his inauguration. Andanar said that a couple of weeks ago, they asked RTVM to send in a teleprompter. “He liked it. He liked the teleprompter,” Andanar said. Incoming Presidential spokesman Ernie Abella disclosed that social networking site Facebook has offered to stream the inauguration live. “We had a meeting with the representative of Facebook Asia and they offered to live stream the inauguration. It can be easily accessed especially by OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) and Filipinos all over the world,” Abella said. As promised, the inauguration will be brief and the usual rites – including the salubong between Duterte and outgoing President Aquino will be “edited and shortened” to an estimated duration of five hours. Incoming Vice President Leni Robredo’s presence in the President’s inauguration had not been considered, said Andanar and Abella. There will be no partying too and that the incoming President decided to do away with the traditional vin d’honneur. “There will be no champagne popping, no caviar, no blue cheese,” Andanar said. Instead, a diplomatic reception will be held but the types food to be served were not divulged by Andanar and Abella. After the inauguration, Duterte will administer the mass oath taking of Cabinet members, to be followed by a meeting with the diplomatic corps. Regarding the incoming First Family, it is not year clear who will be standing beside Duterte but both Andanar and Abella have confirmed that people close to Duterte, including his children Sara, Paolo, Sebastian and Veronica, will be there. Members of his Cabinet and councilors of Davao City were also invited but were strictly advised not to bring their spouses. Abella and Andanar asserted that Duterte, a simple man all his life, would fulfill his pronouncements that nothing fancy would be served in the inauguration. Meanwhile, LED screens will be mounted in Davao City so that the residents will be able to monitor live the inauguration of Duterte. 9 Tea Leavers and Champagne for Remain: what your shopping basket says about your EU stance Never mind a Brexit recession, Leave voters don't believe in climate change (0.19/2) A class divide has long been emerging in the debate about Britain’s EU membership. Rather than a right versus left issue, it is now being characterised as a battle between the generally pro-EU middle classes and the “left behind”, who are more likely to be tempted by Brexit. As YouGov’s Peter Kellner puts it : “Provincial England versus London and the Celts”. An analysis of the nation’s shopping baskets further reveals this demographic split. A survey by Kantar Worldpanel of 780,000 shopping trips – research shown exclusively to the New Statesman – reveals the difference in consumer habits between Remain and Leave voters. Those who express support for Remain, for example, buy 27 per cent more Champagne and Prosecco than Brexiters. The latter are 6 per cent more likely to buy alcohol overall – but they buy more beer and spirits than their political opponents. The upmarket supermarket Waitrose is significantly more popular with Remain voters, who spend 73 per cent more in Waitrose than those wanting to leave the EU. Leavers are more likely to favour Iceland (a supermarket that focuses on frozen foods). Remainers also buy more fresh fish and vegetables than Brexiters, who are 54 per cent more likely to buy frozen meat and 37 per cent more likely to buy frozen poultry than their opponents. In general, Leavers buy significantly more meat (14 per cent more beef, 25 per cent more pork, and 22 per cent more lamb) than Remainers. Remain voters also buy 83 per cent more fresh pasta and 30 per cent more fresh pizzas than Leavers, whereas Leavers buy 17 per cent more pastries. Other differences found in the survey (less easy to extrapolate from) include: Leave voters are 9 per cent more likely to buy healthcare products. Leave voters are 34 per cent more likely to buy pet care products. Remain voters buy more chilled drinks. Leavers buy 20 per cent more tea than Remainers. Remainers buy 30 per cent more instant coffee than Leavers. Remainers buy 33 per cent more frankfurters and continental sausages than Leavers. Leavers buy 9 per cent more margarine and 6 per cent milk than Remainers. Remainers buy 18 per cent more cream than Leavers. Fraser McKevitt from Kantar Worldpanel commented that although the survey isn’t “suggesting that what you buy and where you buy it” determines how you will vote in the referendum, “the relationship between who you are, where you shop, and what you’re likely to buy, is clear. “Affluence and age are proving to be the critical fault lines in the country influencing how people intend to vote, and these same parameters are also a good, but not infallible indication of where people will choose to shop, and the groceries they will spend their money on.” During May 2016, Kantar polled 6,000 main shoppers (aged 16 and over) from its panel of 30,000 UK homes. This allowed it to analyse 780,000 in- store shopping trips across the past year (May 2015-May 2016). This coincides with another supermarket survey on voting habits out today, in which Verdict Retail finds that Tesco shoppers are the most likely of the Big Four grocery retailers (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons) to vote to stay in the European Union, with Sainsbury’s shoppers most likely to vote to leave. Morrisons stores have the most undecided shoppers (nearly a quarter don’t yet know how they will vote), while nearly one in ten who shop in Asda are not planning to turn out. Shoppers at Aldi and Lidl – discount supermarkets – are more likely to vote to leave the European Union compared to the national average, according to the survey of 2,000 consumers. Last night, lead campaigners from both the Leave and the Remain camps participated in the BBC’s live “Great Debate” on the EU referendum at Wembley Arena. Pounding the table with arguments about unelected Brussels burdening us with regulations, the Leave campaign again did its best to avoid facts. Instead, the appeal was to hard-wired instincts of English exceptionalism The New York Times refers to this as a campaign “with sharp tones of xenophobia, racism, nativism and Islamophobia.” How does the Leave campaign get away with this on such a consistent basis? Facts appear not to be a major priority for many Leave voters. That is clear when you look at science. In a ComRes poll of 1,616 prospective voters, Leave supporters were revealed to be much more likely to question science, climate change and evolution. Vote Leave for climate change denial Many on the Leave side seem to distrust both the scientific community and British media. Nearly half think scientists and academics have too much influence over British politics. Two in three believe that the media exaggerates the level of scientific consensus on climate change. This divide is particularly clear when it comes to climate change. One in five Brexit supporters disagree that humans cause climate change. In fact, Leave voters are almost twice as likely as Remain voters to deny manmade climate change. And when it comes to a far more well-established scientific theory, evolution, Brexit supporters are even more sceptical. Nearly half of Leave voters agree that those who question evolution “have a point”. This discord does not only pose a challenge for British academics and journalists. Such beliefs also create fertile ground for false claims and emotive statements which are not grounded in reality. And that extends to arbitrary allegations about Europe and immigration. One of the defining moments of the referendum campaign came when Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston loudly quit Leave. She called the claim Brexit would free up £350 million a week for the NHS "simply not true". Yet the Leave campaign continued to plaster the false claim on buses. And with one week to go to the vote, pollsters Ipsos Mori found nearly half of Brits still believed it. The facts point in one direction Drawing the line directly from science to the uncomfortable referendum debate we find ourselves in may not be clear cut. But the case of NHS statistics show the way people choose to judge – or not to judge – facts has everything to do with the referendum debate. After all, there is overwhelming consensus of the damage Britain could do to its economy by leaving the EU. There is evidence from the Bank of England, HM Treasury, the International Monetary Fund, the OECD, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, PwC, Oxford Economics, the Centre for Economic Performance and others. The Leave campaign would never have been able to make many of its claims if more voters were prone to fact-checking and less prone to fear- mongering. It’s also worth asking why climate change isn’t higher on the agenda. This is particularly odd given that immigration has been a main point of discussion. Unless we increase our efforts against climate change significantly, future levels of climate refugees will dwarf what we see in Europe today. Serious topics, however, require careful examination of the facts. And these make it clear that remaining in the EU is the best choice for Britain’s future and for the climate. Assaad W. 12 Of the People Mayor Shirley Franklin started a program in the city of Atlanta in which every single student who graduated from a public school, she’d find a way to pay for their first year of college. And, after hearing my story, she took an interest in me. She gave me a job in her office and she helped me get into college. Summer came, and I didn’t go to work because I didn’t have a suit. I got a call saying, “You need to get to work,” and she had someone take me suit shopping. They took me and bought me like five different suits and said, “This is how you invest in your kids.” I’m the first person in my family to graduate from college. That is the kind of local politics I grew to love in Atlanta. National politics is more messy. But I have hope that is going to change. Photograph by Ryan Stone for The New York Times

13 Bali Pure extends win streak to 5, dispenses woeful Baguio Bali Pure sailed to its fifth straight win in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference, toying with listless Baguio, 25-18, 25-14, 25-18, Wednesday at San Juan Arena. Grethcel Soltones took care of the scoring cudgels for the Water Defenders with 20 points as they booked an outright semifinal berth by virtue of their 5-1 record. Alyssa Valdez, who has been on a tear averaging 23 points in her two games, only scored eight points but playing coach Charo Soriano did not mind that at all. Soriano said she wants to engage all her players and utilize each to her best capacity. “What we want is for everyone to be engaged and involved, walang player na she doesn’t feel like she’s part of the team,” said Soriano. “Not everyone will get the main role, even a supporting role is the best as long as it helps the goal of the team and that of course is a win.” Amy Ahomiro and Dzi Gervacio also finished in double figures for the Water Defenders with 12 and 11 points, respectively. No player from Baguio finished in double figures with Carmela Dicksen and Maria Tsuchiya leading the Summer Spikers with six points apiece. Bali Pure went mental in offense raining down on the hapless Summer Spikers with 45 points off spikes and 12 service aces.

Visayas top drug suspect clams up, is flown back to Cebu by NBI MANILA — Visayas’ top drug suspect Alvaro Direcho Alvaro has been sent back to Cebu after a 12-hour stay in Manila since his arrest last Tuesday, an official of the National Bureau of Investigation said on Wednesday. Saying he “would be killed anyway,” the drug suspect, known as Barok, remained tight-lipped about his alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade, NBI lawyer Joel Tovera said on Wednesday. Alvaro also declined to confirm if government or police officials served as protectors for him and his boss Jeffrey “Jaguar” Diaz. Las Piñas policemen killed Jaguar after he announced over the radio that he wanted to surrender. Tovera, chief of the the NBI’s anti-illegal drug division, said Alvaro arrived at NBI headquarters Tuesday midnight . Before that, he surrendered in Danao, Cebu, to agents of NBI-Bohol, who thought it necessary to bring him to Manila after cops kept calling NBI’s office in Cebu. “Alvaro feared for his life and NBI agents thought it would be safer if they extract information from him in Manila,” Tovera said. In Manila, however, Alvaro denied knowing any of the protectors of drug syndicates in the Visayas. He declined to give any information, and said the last time he saw Diaz was two years ago. Tovera said that after Alvaro refused to give a clear testimony, they opted to send him back to Cebu, where he was ordered arrested for selling illegal drugs. Tovera said NBI agents put Alvaro on a 4 p.m. flight back to Cebu. He will be presented to Branch 53 of the Danao regional trial court, which issued warrants of arrest for him for several drug-related cases, according to Tovera. The court will determine where Alvaro will be detained. SFM

Geisler-Matos trash talking at its finest Actor Baron Geisler and fellow indie film actor Kiko Matos faced each other Tuesday with a lot of bullying and trash-talking in the run-up to their cage fight at the Valkyrie Nightclub on June 25. The two were presented at the press conference of the Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) at Shakey’s Malate in Manila. No sooner than the briefing started when fire started to blaze as the two engaged in stabbing banters. Baron officially started the trash talk when a reporter fired the first question. “Ayaw mo bang ladies first? Sorry naunahan na kita sa salita pati sa bigwas, huli ka na,” Geisler provoked Matos. Matos just ignored him and as the briefing continued, Geisler shot again. “Anyway bibigyan ko si Kiko ng bente singko (centavos) dahil sa bentesingko kami magkikita pero bente singko (centavos) lang talaga ang halaga niya.” Before ending his sentence on his reaction toward the massive media attention and social media “cult” following that he has gained because of the series of bar brawls and sensationalized social scandals he’s been into, Geisler asked Matos naughtily. “Kiko, may tanong ako sa ‘yo, powder or lotion?” Matos then went in for the vengeance, making a comment to Geisler: “Di kasi nagslur ano [voice] mo kala ko nakainom ka na naman eh.” Geisler laughed at Matos’ remark and repeatedly teased him of being a liar. Geisler also expressed his “disappointment” over Matos’ training within the URCC main camp in Sucat, Paranaque. “I just want to say medyo nagtatampo ‘ko kay Prof. Alvin [Aguilar, the URCC founder]. Di ko maintindihan kung bakit sa Deftac nagtrain si Kiko, that’s very unfair, let me speak. Baka speak kita ulit, magustuhan mo ulit tumahimik ka (backing off Matos as the latter murmurs as he speaks) I live in Pampanga kasi, I just find it very unfair na why dun sa pinaka main camp pa ng MMA, yun nga that’s why I’m really pissed off right now and I just want to air it out. Sana rin wala kayong kinikilingan samin dalawa Prof Alvin ni Kiko Matos, matsing, please answer, I’m really pissed off.” Aguilar was then quick to defend himself and the URCC, saying he favored no one and Geisler, and anyone for the matter, was welcome to train within the URCC camp. “First of all, my gym is welcome to everybody, you’re also welcome there, Kiko trains with our instructor who’s not part of the Deftac team yet so we have a Deftac team, we have trainers but they don’t train with Kiko. Kiko goes to to train with his friend there. Inuulit ko, we’re not favoring anybody or anything like that, I’ve known you way before him and you know that. We’re not favoring anybody here and we’re all pretty good to go. As much as possible I want a really really good fight. Kiko’s actually training all the way in Batangas; one of the guys there is a Deftac affiliate but he’s not part of the Deftac MMA team. He just trains in our gym, not in our team. So I hope that clarifies everything,” Aguilar explained. Matos also clarified Geisler’s “favoritism” allegation. “I’ve been training with my friend, who’s my kababata. I’ve known him since I was in grade school. One reason why I came to BAMF gym is because he’s an affiliate of Deftac kaya ‘ko nagpupunta sa Batangas, ayun po,” Matos said. Amid their heated tussle, the two gentlemen were asked for anything good they see in each other and Geisler answered first, spiking his trash talk. “Isa lang, he’s a monkey, I’m a human being, I think I’m smarter than him,” Geisler teased. Matos struck back. “Ako ilalayo ko yung mukha ko sa bunganga niya dahil sobrang baho ng hininga niya malamang amoy chiko yan pagdating sa laban saka ano baka amoy putok rin.” Geisler bristled: “Dude, so low dude, yun lang yun? Pare, napaka cheap, cheap pati yung salita mo napaka cheap. I haven’t been drinking and thanks to MMA nagkaron ako ng disiplina. Dude, come on, tama na yung mga lies, so delusional man, what the hell, lalo ka magiging delusional after the fight ‘pag nabigwasan kita.” Matos said that he had actually imagined he would eventually become friends with Geisler, adding that his anger resulting from their bar brawl last month was all gone but that he could not afford to turn back now. “Actually nakikita ko maganda kay Baron yung mukha niya eh, sarap gasgasan. Alam mo, I’ve always thought we’d be friends, actually ako wala na ko galit eh, kung ano man yung nangyari in the past, I’d like to put it all aside and be in good terms but it’s too late to turn back now.” Before Matos could even finish his statement, Geisler quickly retorted. “Liar, he said a lot of bad things about me ngayon binabawi mo!” Geisler shouted. A laughing Matos explained that it was him [Geisler] who actually asked for everything he [Matos] did to him [Geisler]. “Pare ikaw naman nauna eh, you asked for it. Katulad nung first you asked for it, pati nung sinipa kita you asked for it, you just asked for it.” Geisler then ended his word war with a straightforward statement. “You know, man, when I approached you and said thank you thank you very much man, thank you, stop dude. Anyway we will know the truth pagdating sa bente singko.”

Butch Ramirez accepts PSC chair post Former Philippine Sports Commission chair William “Butch’’ Ramirez is back to continue his legacy in the government sports agency. Ramirez, who sat as PSC chair from 2005 to 2009, confirmed Wednesday that he has accepted the offer of incoming President Rodrigo Duterte to lead the country’s sports development programs. As the comebacking chair of the sports- funding commission, Ramirez vowed to revive the institute of sports and expand the regional training centers in the provinces, projects discontinued by his successors after he stepped down seven years ago. “There’s an instruction from the President that we have to go to the provinces and the communities to identify more talents,’’ said Ramirez, who is set to take over the chores of outgoing chair Richie Garcia on July 1. He will meet with Garcia at the PSC administration office on June 28 to discuss the transition as instructed by incoming Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea. According to Ramirez, Presidential special assistant Christopher “Bong’’ Go would formally announce the rest of the PSC board members prior to Duterte’s oath-taking on June 30 with basketball legend Ramon Fernandez as one of the commissioners. “We will visit the PSC on Tuesday so we can discuss important matters like the Olympics and the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, and at the same time set the new direction of the new administration,’’ said Ramirez. During his term, Ramirez was the chief architect of the country’s first overall title in the Southeast Asian Games in 2005 Manila and was also credited for the impressive output of four gold medals by the national athletes in the 2006 Doha Asian Games. He served as the Philippine chef de mission on both tournaments. Ramirez is the only two-time chair of the agency since the PSC was created in 1990. “I’m not going to the (Rio de Janeiro) Olympics. I’ll focus on the SEA Games preparation apart from the institute of sports and regional training centers,’’ said Ramirez. He initially begged off from regaining his post due to the administrative cases filed against him after his term. “But sports is the closest thing to my heart. 17 NCAA to retire Loyzaga’s no. 14 jersey Basketball legend Carlos Loyzaga will take his place among the immortals as the NCAA will retire his number 14 jersey before Season 92 tips off on Saturday. NCAA management committee chairman Jose Mari Lacson said that the family of the basketball legend will be on hand to witness the historic event, including son Chito. Loyzaga played for San Beda in his collegiate career in the 1950s before embarking on a legendary career, where he led the Philippines to numerous triumphs in the international stage. “Caloy Loyzaga has made not just San Beda and the NCAA, but also the whole Philippines proud. It’s about time we return what he had done by honoring him with this,” said Lacson. During his stint with the Red Lions, Loyzaga steered the team to back-to- back NCAA championships in 1951 and 1952. He also led the country to gold medals in the 1960 and 1963 Fiba Asia Championships, and four times in the Asian Games from 1950 to 1962. Loyzaga was also instrumental in helping the Philippines come away with the bronze medal in the 1954 Fiba World Championship in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. “The Big Difference” passed away early this year but definitely left an indelible mark in the Philippine basketball scene.

WATCH: Cambodian company molds ‘custom- made’ clouds Now, a cloud can be made and formed into different shapes such as that of a heart. With the “magic touch” of Khmer Cloud Making Service, a startup company in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, heart-shaped clouds and other fancy shapes can be made to drift into the sky. In several Facebook videos posted by the company’s Facebook account, a vendor liberates fluffy clouds in the air while bystanders stop to watch them. One of the videos accumulated 11.6 million views, 160,000 shares, and 50,000 likes and reactions as of this writing. According to the company’s website , the environmental- friendly clouds are made from proprietary surfactant soap and light gases such as helium. “The cloud making machine compresses the air and mixes it with the foaming liquid to form what looks like a thick mass of bubbles. When this mass is cut from the machine it floats smoothly to the sky,” it explained. Tightly stuffed bubbles elevate through a stencil before the vendor slices it off for take-off. The life expectancy of the clouds depends on the formula of the foaming liquid and the weather. A report by Huffington Post said the Khmer startup also cuts other shapes such as snowflakes, stars, peace signs and dolphins, and 5 percent of its earnings are donated to impoverished Khmer children. “Even if we are based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, we believe that we can reach any sky in the world,” the company stated. The Huffington Post report said the prices of the clouds start at $999. Gianna Francesca Catolico

3 senators eyed public services committee, says Sotto AT LEAST three senators had wanted to get the chairmanship of the Senate committee on public services, which was later given to Senator Grace Poe, Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III disclosed on Wednesday. “Gusto ni Senator Grace; gusto ni Senator JV; gusto rin ni Senator Zubiri. The majority decides,” Sotto said at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay. JV is incumbent Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito while Zubiri is Senator-elect Juan Miguel Zubiri. Ejercito backed Poe’s presidential run in the May 9 elections while Zubiri ran under her ticket. Poe was said to be among the 14 senators who signed a resolution, supporting Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III’s bid for Senate President in the 17th Congress. Ejercito and Zubiri, on the other hand, were reportedly leaning towards Pimentel’s contender, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano. Sotto expressed doubts however that the majority’s decision to give the committee to Poe was one of the reasons Ejercito and Zubiri did not join their group. Ejercito, in a separate interview with reporters, confirmed that he wanted to chair the committee on public services, saying he was interested in the transport sector. “I’d have to be honest, ang gusto ko sana maging chair ng committee of public services pero from what I heard, ito po ay nabigay na kay Senator Grace Poe,” he said. “I’d not mind kung sana’y makuha man lang ako kahit vice chair kahit doon lang sa transportation kasi ang public services medyo malaking (sector yan) andyan ang franchises. I’m more interested in the transport sector kasi medyo naiintidihan ko yan at pinag-aralan ko din yan. In fact, I went to Japan, I went to Singapore to study the railway system. I want to be an enabler, I’d say,” Ejercito explained. He said one of the many reasons he is backing the incoming administration of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte was the latter’s commitment to his first big project – the railway system. “Aside from the public services, sana lang makatulong ako dun. Kung hindi ko man makuha yung chairmanship at least maging active din ako dun sa komite,” he said. Asked if Cayetano had promised to give him the committee should the former become the Senate President, Ejercito said: “Sabi ko yun ang first choice ko. Parang mayroon ding ibang gusto nun. Ang hinihiling ko na lang mag-vice-chair or (active) member.”/ ac

Builders have no right to change names of roads: Shiv Sena The Shiv Sena wants to take some city developers head on. The ruling party in the BMC on Tuesday made a statement against those builders and developers who rename certain areas or roads in order to sell their properties. This is seen as veiled jibe at BJP MLA and builder Mangal Prabhat Lodha, who has followed this practice. Calling such renaming illegal, misleading and insulting, Sena asked the BMC to fine these builders and stop their projects Mid Day had reported in the past how city builders and developers rename roads and areas to attract buyers. They take advantage of proximity to famous areas like Juhu and rename a neighboring area based on it. Thus, a supposedly middle-class area is advertised as Upper Juhu or Upper Worli in order to give it a plush ring. Same can be said about roads. After some Sena legislators, Sena corporator and Leader of the House Trushna Vishwasrao gave a statement in the general assembly on Tuesday. According to the statement, “Such renaming is illegal. Developers have no right to change the names of areas and if they are doing so, they are misleading the citizens. Also, giving them the tags of heritage areas is an insult to them.” Some have called this a veiled threat against BJP since BJP MLA MP Lodha has also used this practice for his real estate projects. Vishwasrao has also alleged that this will create a rift within the rich and the poor. “The concerned should fine such developers and stop their projects,” the statement says. But MNS corporator Dilip Lande said there is nothing new in this since developers have done this even in the past. Asked about the hint towards Lodha, BJP corporator Manoj Kotak said, “It is not only Lodha who does this. It’s a common practice. Nobody is changing the postal address on paper, right? Then let them advertise.” Kotak said that the time of the House should be put to better use instead of wasting it on such trivial issues.

Indian hockey team is 110 percent fit for Rio Games: Dhanraj Pillay Experience is a valuable asset for any sportsperson. Having braced the Olympics stage four times in his glittering career, Dhanraj Pillay listed certain dos and don'ts for the Indian hockey team that is aiming for its first medal since 1980 at the Rio Olympics. Dhanraj Pillay But first he hailed the team's fitness levels after their 0-0 regulation time result against Australia in the recent FIH Champions Trophy final in England. India went down to Australia 1-3 in the penalty shootout to settle for a silver medal — a first in 36 years. Consistency is key "Winning and losing is part of the game, but they (India) gave a tough fight (to the Australians in the final). I don't think we have played that consistently for 70 minutes (now 60 minutes) against Australia in the past, although we have beaten them in their own This Indian team's India's fitness levels have increased a lot. I believe they are 110 percent fit. Frankly, Indians don't keep pace with the Australians, but in the Champions Trophy Australia were nowhere compared to India in terms on fitness. We had 70 per cent of ball position in the last quarter of the final. " Members of the Indian hockey team take a selfie with their Champions Trophy runners-up medals at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London recently. Pic/Getty Images The former skipper has now urged the team to continue their fine form without taking any unnecessary risks. "With only one month left, I request players not to fool around with their body too much. Be careful about your injuries and eat the right food at the right time. Don't take medicines which will may harm you. No one knows, who will be called for a (dope) test. I was asked to give a test in all the Olympics," warned Pillay during an interaction on the sidelines of the launch of the Mumbai Super League table tennis tournament at the National Sports Club of India in Worli yesterday. Pillay is the co-owner of Blazing Bashers, one of the 10 franchisees in the tournament. India last won a medal at the Olympics in 1980 Moscow Games where V Baskaran & Co beat Spain 4-3 in the final to clinch gold. And Pillay has high hopes of Sardar Singh & Co clinching a medal at Rio. Positive results "Indian hockey is gradually getting back on track with their performances in the last six months. They finished runners-up at the Sultan Azlan Shah in Malaysia (in April) and now this Champions Trophy silver medal," he added. Though he refrained from predicting any particular finish for the Indian hockey team at Rio, the former star striker said the real challenge will begin after the quarter-finals. "I cannot say what it will be but you need to take it match by match. The real challenge starts after the quarter-finals. There is a chance for India to finish on the podium. We need to be very sharp in scoring field goals. Every opportunity that comes along must be converted 100 per cent. Don't regret later, like how Dhanraj Pillay is regretting. Despite playing four Olympics, I regret not being able to win even one medal for India. "

Note to Supplemental Financial Data and GAAP to Non-GAAP Reconciliations This press release and its attachments include the non-GAAP financial measures of revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs ("revenue ex-TAC"); gross mobile revenue; gross search revenue; adjusted EBITDA; non-GAAP income from operations; non-GAAP net earnings; non-GAAP net earnings per diluted share; and free cash flow, which are reconciled to revenue (in the case of revenue ex-TAC, gross mobile revenue, and gross search revenue); net income (loss) attributable to (in the case of adjusted EBITDA and non-GAAP net earnings); income (loss) from operations; net income (loss) attributable to common stockholders per share - diluted; and net cash provided by (used in) operating activities, which we believe are the most comparable GAAP measures. (together with its consolidated subsidiaries, "Yahoo," the "Company," or "we") uses these non-GAAP financial measures for internal managerial purposes and to facilitate period-to- period comparisons. We describe limitations specific to each non-GAAP financial measure below. Management generally compensates for limitations in the use of non-GAAP financial measures by relying on comparable GAAP financial measures and providing investors with a reconciliation of the non-GAAP financial measure to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure or measures. Further, management uses non-GAAP financial measures only in addition to and in conjunction with results presented in accordance with GAAP. We believe that these non-GAAP financial measures reflect additional ways of viewing aspects of our operations that, when viewed with our GAAP results, provide a more complete understanding of factors and trends affecting our business. These non-GAAP measures should be considered as a supplement to, and not as a substitute for, or superior to, revenue, net income (loss) attributable to , income (loss) from operations, net income (loss) attributable to common stockholders per share - diluted, and net cash provided by (used in) operating activities calculated in accordance with GAAP. Revenue ex-TAC is a non-GAAP financial measure defined as GAAP revenue less TAC that has been recorded as a cost of revenue. TAC consists of payments made to Affiliates, and payments made to companies that direct consumer and business traffic to. TAC is recorded either as a reduction of revenue or as cost of revenue. We present revenue ex-TAC to provide investors a metric used by the Company for evaluation and decision-making purposes and to provide investors with comparable revenue numbers when comparing to our historical reported financial information. A limitation of revenue ex-TAC is that it is a measure we defined for internal and investor purposes that may be unique to the Company, and therefore it may not enhance the comparability of our results to those of other companies in our industry who have similar business arrangements but address the impact of TAC differently. Management compensates for these limitations by also relying on the comparable GAAP financial measures of revenue and cost of revenue—TAC. Each of gross mobile revenue and gross search revenue is a non-GAAP financial measure. Gross mobile revenue is defined as GAAP mobile revenue plus the related revenue share with third parties. Gross search revenue is defined as GAAP search revenue plus the related revenue share with third parties. We present these amounts to provide investors with additional metrics used by the Company for evaluation and decision- making purposes and as an indicator of the size of our presence in the relevant business. To this end, gross mobile revenue and gross search revenue report the total receipts generated on and Affiliate sites by the specified relevant business (i.e., mobile or search), before any TAC or other revenue share is paid to the Affiliates and before any revenue share is allocated to Microsoft or other parties. A limitation of these non-GAAP measures is that they include revenue that is recognized by one or more third parties and not by Yahoo; furthermore, they are measures we defined for internal and investor purposes that may be unique to us, and therefore may not enhance the comparability of our results to those of other companies in our industry who have similar business arrangements but address the impact of TAC and revenue sharing differently. Management compensates for these limitations by also relying on the comparable financial measure GAAP revenue. Adjusted EBITDA is defined as net income (loss) attributable to before taxes, depreciation, amortization of intangible assets, stock-based compensation expense, other expense, net (which includes interest), earnings in equity interests, net income attributable to noncontrolling interests and other gains, losses, and expenses that we do not believe are indicative of our ongoing results. We present adjusted EBITDA because the exclusion of certain gains, losses, and expenses facilitates comparisons of the operating performance of the Company on a period to period basis. Adjusted EBITDA has limitations as an analytical tool and should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for results reported under GAAP. These limitations include: adjusted EBITDA does not reflect tax payments and such payments reflect a reduction in cash available to us; adjusted EBITDA does not reflect the periodic costs of certain capitalized tangible and intangible assets used in generating revenues in our businesses; adjusted EBITDA does not include stock-based compensation expense related to the Company's workforce; adjusted EBITDA also excludes other expense, net (which includes interest), earnings in equity interests, net income attributable to noncontrolling interests and other gains, losses, and expenses that we do not believe are indicative of our ongoing results, and these items may represent a reduction or increase in cash available to us; and adjusted EBITDA is a measure that may be unique to the Company, and therefore it may not enhance the comparability of our results to other companies in our industry. Management compensates for these limitations by also relying on the comparable GAAP financial measure of net income (loss) attributable to , which includes taxes, depreciation, amortization, stock-based compensation expense, other expense, net (which includes interest), earnings in equity interests, net income attributable to noncontrolling interests and the other gains, losses and expenses that are excluded from adjusted EBITDA. Non-GAAP income from operations is defined as income (loss) from operations excluding certain gains, losses, and expenses that we do not believe are indicative of our ongoing operating results and further adjusted to exclude stock-based compensation expense. Because of the variety of equity awards used by companies, the varying methodologies for determining stock-based compensation expense, and the subjective assumptions involved in those determinations, we believe excluding stock- based compensation expense enhances the ability of management and investors to understand the impact of stock-based compensation expense on income (loss) from operations. We consider non-GAAP income from operations to be a profitability measure which facilitates the forecasting of our operating results for future periods and allows for the comparison of our results to historical periods. A limitation of non-GAAP income from operations is that it does not include all items that impact our income from operations for the period. Management compensates for this limitation by also relying on the comparable GAAP financial measure of income (loss) from operations which includes the gains, losses, and expenses that are excluded from non-GAAP income from operations. Non-GAAP net earnings is defined as net income (loss) attributable to (which we sometimes refer to as net earnings) excluding certain gains, losses, expenses, and their related tax effects that we do not believe are indicative of our ongoing results and further adjusted to exclude stock- based compensation expense and its related tax effects. Because of the variety of equity awards used by companies, the varying methodologies for determining stock-based compensation expense, and the subjective assumptions involved in those determinations, we believe excluding stock- based compensation expense enhances the ability of management and investors to understand the impact of stock-based compensation expense on net income and net income per share. We consider non-GAAP net earnings and non-GAAP net earnings per diluted share to be profitability measures which facilitate the forecasting of our results for future periods and allow for the comparison of our results to historical periods. A limitation of non-GAAP net earnings and non-GAAP net earnings per diluted share is that they do not include all items that impact our net income and net income per diluted share for the period. Management compensates for this limitation by also relying on the comparable GAAP financial measures of net income (loss) attributable to and net income (loss) attributable to common stockholders per share - diluted, both of which include the gains, losses, expenses and related tax effects that are excluded from non-GAAP net earnings and non-GAAP net earnings per diluted share. Free cash flow is a non-GAAP financial measure defined as net cash provided by (used in) operating activities (adjusted to include excess tax benefits from stock-based awards), less acquisition of property and equipment, net (i.e., acquisition of property and equipment less proceeds received from disposition of property and equipment) and dividends received from equity investees. We consider free cash flow to be a liquidity measure which provides useful information to management and investors about the amount of cash generated by business operations, after deducting our net payments for acquisitions and dispositions of property and equipment, which cash can then be used for strategic opportunities or other business purposes including, among others, investing in the Company's business, making strategic acquisitions, strengthening the balance sheet, and repurchasing stock. A limitation of free cash flow is that it does not represent the total increase or decrease in the cash balance for the period. Management compensates for this limitation by also relying on the net change in cash and cash equivalents as presented in the Company's unaudited condensed consolidated statements of cash flows prepared in accordance with GAAP which incorporates all cash movements during the period.

After Obama touts military gains, US officials warn campaign against ISIS could backfire WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama and some administration officials have hailed recent military gains against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, but other US officials and outside experts warn that the US-backed air and ground campaign is far from eradicating the radical Islamic group, and could even backfire. While Islamic State's defeats in Iraq and Syria have erased its image of invincibility, they threaten to give it greater legitimacy in the eyes of disaffected Sunni Muslims because Shi'ite and Kurdish fighters are a major part of the campaign, some US intelligence officials argue. A second danger, some US officials said, is that as the group loses ground in the Iraqi city of Falluja and elsewhere, it will turn increasingly to less conventional military tactics and to directing and inspiring more attacks against "soft" targets in Europe, the United States and elsewhere. One US intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, warned that in response to losing Falluja and other cities the group likely would turn more to guerrilla tactics to disrupt efforts to restore government services. "We can expect ISIL to harass local forces that are holding cities it previously controlled, thereby drawing out battles into protracted campaigns," he said. The territory held by ISIL has enabled it to build up revenues through oil and taxes, provided it a base to launch attacks on Baghdad, and acted as a recruiting tool for foreign fighters drawn to the self-proclaimed Islamic caliphate. President Barack Obama said on June 14 -- two days after a gunman pledging allegiance to Islamic State killed 49 people in Orlando -- that the militant group was losing "the money that is its lifeblood" as it continues to lose territory. Brett McGurk, the presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, told a White House briefing on June 10 that the group has lost half the territory it had seized in Iraq, about 20 percent of its self-proclaimed caliphate in Syria, and at least 30 percent of its oil production, which accounts for half its revenue. But Islamic State fighters in Iraq are already showing signs of adapting a guerrilla war-style strategy, Seth Jones, an analyst with the RAND Corp, told Reuters. "It looks like the areas that the Islamic State has lost, they are generally abandoning, and that would mean preparing to fight another day," he said. Despite the progress against ISIL on the battlefield and in the financial realm, CIA Director John Brennan told the Senate Intelligence Committee last week: "Our efforts have not reduced the group's terrorism capability and global reach. " "The resources needed for terrorism are very modest, and the group would have to suffer even heavier losses of territory, manpower, and money for its terrorist capacity to decline significantly," he said. ENCOURAGING LONE WOLVES Hassan Hassan, a terrorism expert at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London, told the US Senate Homeland Security committee on Tuesday that the Orlando attack showed the group's territorial losses hadn't diminished its broader appeal. "The Islamic State's international appeal has become untethered from its military performance on the ground," he said. Sunnis in Iraq no longer view the ISIL radicals as liberators, and the Shi'ite role in the fighting is less important than it was a year ago, officials in Baghdad told Reuters. As a result, they said, the Iraqi army has gained Sunni acceptance and is seen less as a Shi'ite-led sectarian force than it was under former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. But the risk that offensives against ISIL involving Shi'ite forces could foment sectarian tensions and help the group have been underscored by allegations that 49 Sunni men were executed after surrendering to a Shi'ite militia supporting the army offensive to retake Falluja. Such reports "feed into ISIL's narrative," the US intelligence official said. Former US ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, who visited the country in March, wrote last week in the Cipher Brief, an online intelligence publication, that extremist Shi'ite militias are on the scene in Falluja. Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani has underscored Iran's role in the conflict by appearing publicly on the battlefield. As ISIL has faced military setbacks, the flow of foreign fighters travelling to Iraq and Syria has dropped significantly, according to the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL. European counter terrorism officials said some 300-400 already have returned to Britain, raising concerns about what they called an increasing convergence of IS ideology and mentally unstable individuals. So called "lone wolf" attackers like the Orlando shooter are Islamic State's way of "overwhelming their enemies with threats that have to be run to ground," Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism expert at Georgetown University in Washington, told Reuters. "That is the true intention beyond the lone wolf attacks -- to distract and overwhelm the attention of law enforcement and intelligence. " Eliminating the threat ISIL poses will require coupling the military gains in Iraq and Syria with political and economic reforms, say US officials and outside experts. "They became a strong organization because of the political failure," Hassan said. "My fear is that there's so much focus on the military component, rather than on the political, and social and religious dimensions. "

40 PM seeks bill to postpone Amona outpost destruction Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Likud lawmakers to come up with legislation that could delay the demolition of the Amona outpost, and MK Miki Zohar stepped up to the plate Wednesday. Amona, a small community near Ofra, is slated for demolition at the end of the year, and the 40 families residing there rejected a plan to move them to a new, legal site near Shiloh. The outpost was built in 1995, with a grant from the Construction and Housing MInistry. Ten Palestinians from the nearby village of Silwad claimed ownership of the land in a petition to the High Court brought on their behalf by the NGO Yesh Din, and the High Court determined in 2014 that Amona cannot be legalized retroactively. Amona was the site of the most violent clashes between settlers and security forces in 2007, when the IDF demolished unauthorized homes. Zohar's submitted a bill that would have a seven-year waiting period between the release of an administrative demolition order and its implementation. According to Zohar, seven years is a reasonable amount of time. His bill would only apply in cases in which the home was built in a place with infrastructure provided by the state, and if the family had been living there for at least 10 years. "We should do everything to reduce the harm to evacuees and allow the government a more significant amount of time to execute the demolition order," Zohar stated. "Seven years makes sense when there isn't anyone who's waiting to live on the land. " According to Zohar, Netanyahu is considering his proposal together with the Attorney General.

'Maharashtra may get a new Chief Minister soon' Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has not a single good thing to say about the BJP government in the Centre and the state, labelling it a failure on all counts. Nor did he mince his words when it came to the BJP’s poster boy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who he says, is making a series of foreign trips just to make up for the fact that he had once been denied a visa because of the Gujarat riots. Chavan paints his successor, Devendra Fadnavis, as a failure who is struggling to stay in office as he brushes under the carpet all the corruption by his ministers. Prithviraj Chavan Excerpts 'Modi a cowboy' I’m sorry to say the PM’s understanding of economy is poor and his finance minister is equally dismal. Mr Modi is not an economist, we all know. But in the past two years, he should have got enough understanding of the basics of economy. Instead he is doubling up in foreign affairs and touring foreign counties. Sadly, there is abject failure in our foreign policy. You cannot do a cowboy policy, wherein you suddenly get up and visit Pakistan. You announce aid to some country and do all possible tricks. Hogging publicity abroad Modi goes to foreign countries and meets Indians there just to hog popularity. He doesn’t go there to win new friends. You must know that he was not allowed visa to many countries because of the Gujarat riots. I think is he making up for that by visiting as many countries as he can while he is PM. What is unfortunate is that Modi doesn’t acknowledge that his predecessor Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation for what Modi claims to have been doing for foreign affairs. There’s more to Rajan’s exit Getting Raghuram Rajan, one of the brighest young economists in the world, as our RBI governor was a big victory for Manmohan Singh. He is still one of the best today. He is a little outspoken and speaks his mind, which the PM and FM might not have liked. They expected him to work like an average babu. But I think there’s something more to his exit. Did he go at the behest of large bank defaulters? It will be interesting to see who replaces him. I strongly feel that only an upright person will work wonders in that position. This government is smart in masking its failures. Fearing a bad market after Rajan’s exit, it announced an FDI policy to manage the market. Similarly, after the Bihar debacle, it tried to recover the market by announcing some package. Make in India? It’s all jumla Achieving growth and bringing in ‘achhe din’ is just a jumla. Make in India is a falsehood. I have asked our CM Devendra Fadnavis to give me the names of investors who inked MoUs with the government during the Make in India week. He hasn’t given me any list, not even after I applied under the Right To Information Act. They don’t want me to know who will create 13 lakh jobs in Maharashtra by investing Rs 8 lakh crore. I believe it’s yet another jumla. No new industry has come. Exports are down, nothing is working. Yet they manage the figures, which experts have started questioning now. Agricultural failure The BJP proved disastrous not only in the Centre, but also in Maharashtra, where the highest ever number of farmer suicides were recorded in the past 16 months. The PM has no answer, and even the Maharashtra CM has nothing to say on this failure. Their talk of doubling agriculture is far-fetched, because they are not able to give farmers price for their produce and they are not offering loan waivers to distressed farmers either. Water crisis mishandled Maharashtra government’s drought management has created a negative impression in investors. Marathwada, once a destination for investors, has become a big repellant due to the water crisis. The Fadnavis government denied water to industries, it stopped water supply to breweries. Who would want to invest in Marathwada in future? The BJP government in the Centre and State have botched up water conservation by using techiniques that are harmful in long term. They are digging rivers, which will affect recharging of water sources in the long term. 'Smart City scheme is wrong' They are giving Rs 100 crore to a smaller town and the same amount a metro like Mumbai. What is this? The government should invest in state- controlled corporations to do jobs like solid waste management, jobs that contractors are not willing to do efficiently. Bullet train a Tughlaq-brained idea How can anyone think a bullet train (between Ahmedabad and Mumbai) is a top priority at this stage? It is like a move by Muhammad Tughlaq (a Turkish sultan of Delhi, 1325-1351, who historians described as a lunatic for his strange and impulsive decisions that caused great trouble to the people). The bullet train will not benefit Mumbai and Mahaashtra at all. I’m completely opposed to the idea. The government is not coming clean on how it intends to raise funds for this mega project. Saffron agenda The BJP is out to saffronise everything. I’m told that the party is heading towards making Hindutva its agenda. They are changing education to fit their agenda as well. Our diversity is at stake. See what they are doing through yoga day, ban on beef and all Hindu things that are heaped on us. Sena may quit state govt I strongly believe that the Sena will pull out of the state government any time before the BMC polls. I’m not sure when, but the Sena should start working as the official opposition (as they did in 2014, before joining the minority government). They have the numbers and they can have their opposition leader (instead of the Congress’s current opposition leader in the Assembly). The Sena doesn’t want to contest Assembly polls again. This is the most likely scenario. The Sena’s completing 50 years of existence is a great achievement, thanks to Balasaheb (Thackeray). However, has the Sena’s current leadership filled Balsaheb’s shoes? Can it speak for the Marathi people? NCP to demand a new CM Once the BJP is on its own, NCP will come into the picture. It will take centrestage in an arrangement to stabilise the BJP’s government, which will face a minority crisis after the Sena’s exit. However, NCP may want the current CM changed in return. The NCP would want a friendly CM, as their leadership doesn’t like Fadnavis. Blame game with NCP I don’t know why the NCP leadership is blaming me for the Assembly defeat in Maharashtra. In fact, it was a series of corruption scandals in Maharashtra and Delhi that took us down. There was also the Modi factor, which has since vanished. On battling corruption as CM I decided to work in a particular manner in view of the change of leadership (in the wake of the Adarsh scam). I wanted to regain the confidence of the people and I did it quite successfully. I corrected the state’s apex cooperative bank and I sought clarity in irrigation department, though I had limitations. I didn’t have the mandate to sack corrupt ministers (from NCP) because I was heading a coalition government. In fact, there were two governments that ran parallel to each other. One was headed by me and the other was led by Ajit Pawar. The allegation that I initiated inquiries against Chhagan Bhujbal and Ajit Pawar is completely wrong. It was the then home minister (late RR Patil, also of NCP) who signed the orders. Those files never came to me. Congress, be aggressive CM Fadnavis is a big failure. He is trying to push every corruption case under the carpet. His only job is to survive in office. All corruption cases in his government are fit to go to the court, and the Congress must take initiative in taking a legal course. The BJP did it against all our top leaders. The goodie-goodie approach towards the BJP government will not do. For instance, Eknath Khadse getting calls from Dawood’s wife is very serious. He is the first sitting Cabinet minister whose case was given to the Anti- Terror Squad for investigations. This directive of the CM has some connotations. Why the ATS? The Congress must move court in this matter. I’m told that Fadnavis is not keen on taking Khadse back in the Cabinet, but other party leaders are very keen. On Kamat’s resignation My party colleague Gurudas Kamat’s decision of quitting the party could have been avoided. The party national general secretary (Mohan Prakash) should have managed the issue before it escalated. I believe that some arrangement will be made to retain Kamat and he should be given a wider space to work in Mumbai ahead of BMC election. When we talk of loyalists, the party has to keep a delicate balance of loyalists and other leaders who are brought in from other parties. The party needs to accommodate new people, but putting new entrants in charge is not correct. I also feel that the loyalists will stay with the party, but the others may move out seeking greener pastures.

11 tricks retailers use to get more of your money By Morgan Quinn/GOBankingRates If you've ever gone over budget when shopping at your favorite store, it probably wasn't an accident - - at least, not on the store's part. According to savings experts, retailers use a variety of tactics and tricks to get consumers to spend as much as possible. From clever product placement to crafty pricing strategies, click through to see the most common "tricks" retailers use -- and how you can avoid them. To save money on groceries , keep an eye out for this trick. Josh Elledge of SavingsAngel.com said stores can easily double their profits on packaged produce. "If you want convenience, you'll generally pay for it," he said. "Produce that is cut, prepared and packaged can be much more profitable for retailers. Compare the price per pound of a bunch of carrots versus a bag of washed baby carrots -- it can be a big difference. " If you want to keep your produce costs down, go for whole, unprepared fruits and vegetables. It's worth spending 10 to 15 minutes doing your own slicing and dicing at home. Grocery stores also entice customers to buy prepared foods by placing pre- made meals and food around the perimeter of the store. Like pre-cut produce, many customers might end up paying for the convenience. "The perimeter is heavily trafficked and almost always gives you access to the deli, meat, bakery, seafood and dairy departments, where profits can help offset those loss leaders at the store's entrance and elsewhere," said Elledge. He added, "Prepared foods at the deli are as highly profitable as a restaurant, and the smells emanating from the bakery give you more of that warm feeling that encourages you to spend more. " It's tempting to throw a roasted chicken and glazed veggies in your cart and call it dinner, but you can save money on food by purchasing the ingredients and preparing the meal at home. And if you're pressed for time, try cooking meals in bulk and freezing for later. It's very common for retailers to fill open bins with goods that are on sale. Bins are easy to fill to the brim with sale merchandise, which creates a sense of urgency to buy and a treasure hunt-like shopping experience. To avoid this trap, don't head to the store looking for a bargain, and be wary of sale bins. Keep a running list of what you actually need -- and stick to it. "Shoppers who are looking for bargains when they shop actually spend more than people who are only shopping for a particular list of items," claims Elledge. Large carts and bags make it easy to grab all the items you need, but they also make it easy to pile on a bunch of items you don't need. So instead of grabbing a giant cart or bag on your next shopping trip, try ditching them altogether and see if you end up saving money. Retailers who want their customers to spend more know that the longer they keep them in the store, the more money they'll likely spend, said Elledge. If you notice that you tend to spend more money when you're shopping in a store with a confusing, maze-like layout, consider avoiding that store and ordering items online instead. Not every store is big enough to wind customers through a maze, so what do they do instead? Simply change the store layout. "By changing up the layout, they get you to spend more time in the store looking for the item you need," said John Schmoll, founder of Frugal Rules. "The more time you spend in the store provides more opportunity to buy. " If you're favorite store suddenly switches up the layout, grab the nearest employee who can help you find what you're looking for. Stick with this counter-move until you've mastered the new floor plan, and you'll avoid wandering the aisles and purchasing items you don't need. Alexander Reichmann, CEO of iTestCash , said retailers use music to set the mood and control their customer's energy levels. In fact, one 2012 study Reichmann cites found that moderate noise distractions enhance creativity and make customers "more likely to buy new and innovative products. " "[In] a sporting goods store, you may hear music that makes the shopper feel more energetic in that shopping environment," Reichmann said. "The easiest way to avoid falling for this is to plan your shopping trip in advance, either with a budget or list. And don't go over what you intend on spending there. " "Bounce-back" offers usually compel shoppers to come back to the store. Kendal Perez, savings expert with CouponSherpa.com , said examples of this kind of offer include Kohl's Cash, The Limited Virtual Dollars and Lane Bryant's Real Women Dollars. "Typically, you have to spend a certain amount in order to earn one of these vouchers," she said. "To redeem the offer, users must spend a minimum amount -- anywhere from $25 to $50 -- within a certain time frame. This offer is effective because it drives the shopper to potentially spend more than he or she intended. It also creates a return visit and purchase, which the consumer may not have otherwise made without the voucher. " Avoid spending more by recognizing "it as a retail strategy, and only spend what you intended," recommended Perez. "Instead, use these offers to offset a planned purchase, like a gift or upcoming expense that can be applied for money savings. " Many retailers offer free shipping year-round, but Perez said free shipping is the most common type of threshold offer where "a shopper must spend a certain amount in order to receive the deal. For example, a customer might have to spend at least $50 to get free shipping. " Don't fall for every threshold offer, though. Perez recommended doing a little math before you check out. "If the shipping fee is $8, and the total is more than $8 away from reaching the threshold, it may make more sense to pay the shipping fee than to add a $15 or $20 product," she said. She does make one exception to this rule, however: "If you're ordering from Amazon, it's possible you can add one or more household items on your list you'd normally buy from your local supermarket to qualify for the shipping threshold and avoid a shipping fee while crossing something off your list. " Jordan Wolff from Shrinkabill.com , a service that negotiates rates on bills, said cable companies are notorious for this strategy. "Many times, these companies will offer you free premium channels for a set period, such as three months," he said. "But then once the period ends, you are responsible to turn off the premium channels. Otherwise, at the end of the promotion, the channels will remain active and the cable provider will start charging for these services. " If you are tempted by a free trial, ask up front what kind of "free" promotion is being offered. If you discover the responsibility of cancelling falls on your shoulders, then Wolff recommended you either reject the service or set a calendar reminder in the final month of the promotion to call and ask the provider to turn it off. Wolff also warned about being charged to install equipment or initiate the service. " Everything is negotiable , so you can always ask for these fees to be waived," he said. "Since you are a potential new customer, you will have more negotiation power. " Many retailers use price anchoring to get customers to spend more money, said Allen Walton founder of online store SpyGuySecurity.com, which sells spy and surveillance equipment. "[Retailers] make up a fake retail price and then have a heavily discounted sale price," he explained. "This makes it seem like the customer is getting a great deal compared to the usual price. " Walton said this strategy is particularly effective because shoppers are trained to think sales are short- lived. "They'll buy now instead of putting it off and risk the sale ending," he added. To counteract this move, don't rely on the first price you see -- retailers want you to use their initial pricing to make purchasing decisions. Instead, do some online research, or even poll your friends and family to see what they have paid for similar items. Click here for a look at even more pricing tricks.

A Case for a Managed Forest By Don Mallicoat- In our previous column we mentioned the WRC Wildlife Action Plan had been approved by the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Incidentally, the USFS should be releasing their long range plan for the Pisgah/Nantahala National Forests; a plan when implemented will affect the state’s Action Plan. Several recent writings, one published by the Forest Service, show scientific evidence as to why that plan should support an actively managed forest. That plan impacts both water yields and wildlife habitat. Let’s start with water yields, something people have used in the past to oppose active management. The USFS Southern Research Station, located in Asheville, released a report on June 1st titled “Water Yields from Southern Appalachian Watersheds in Decline Since the 1970s”. The report studied 76 years of water yield data on public lands from 1938 to 2013. Essentially, the report found that water yields in southern Appalachian forests declined by 22% annually since the late 1970’s. This happens to coincide with when the environmental movement started petitioning the USFS to stop timber harvest. What is the cause of decline? The cause is unmanaged forests. Because of their fast growth rate, most unmanaged forests are dominated by poplar and maple trees, shading out mast bearing trees like oak and hickory. Surprisingly, due to their rapid growth, poplar and maple trees consume more ground water compared to oak and hickory. Therefore, an unmanaged forest that is allowed to regenerate naturally with poplar and maple will consume more ground water thus reducing yield into streams and water tables. I might add that managing to allow for young forest growth and mast bearing trees benefits wildlife. This should be profound information for the USFS in developing any plans in the southern Appalachian region. In a recent article for Forest Policy blog (forestpolicypub.com) by Mac McConnell, he made the case for a better managed forest using long term data from 1990 to 2015. He connected USFS timber harvest data during that period to grouse hunter flush rate data collected by the NC WRC. The accompanying chart with the article is telling. The trend lines for a reduction in timber harvest from five thousand acres annually to only 500 acres annually directly correlates to a reduced grouse flush rate from 4.5 flushes per hour to .5 per hour in 2015. The last year of data was declared by the WRC, “By all measures, grouse hunting during the 2014-2015 season was the poorest on record.” So for other than hunting, why is the grouse important? Wildlife biologists consider the ruffed grouse an indicator species. Because of their specific habitat needs if an ecosystem is out of balance grouse will be one of the first species to suffer. Secondly, because they are hunted data can be collected about hunter success rates for a given environment. The NC WRC not only collects flush rates but also harvest data, where the hunt took place, and also when the hunt occurred. So if grouse are in decline due to loss of habitat then a reasonable assumption can be made that other wildlife which need similar habitat will also be in decline. Which brings us to the third reading. The American Bird Conservancy considers the Golden-Winged Warbler as one of its most threatened species. It has suffered one of the steepest population declines of any songbird. The population has declined 66 percent since 1966 primarily due to habitat loss on its breeding grounds. What type of habitat does it need and where are its breeding grounds? Well, like the ruffed grouse they need young forest growth and the southern Appalachians happen to be one of the Golden-Winged Warbler’s primary breeding grounds. Do you see a connection here? For those that have jumped on the environmentalist bandwagon to stop all timber harvests on the Pisgah/Nantahala National Forests think of the consequences of those actions. Volumes of empirical data exist to make the case for a well managed forest, providing a variety of age classifications, being best for both game and non-game wildlife. Now we have the evidence we need to show that same properly managed forest yields more water in our streams, rivers and lakes for drinking and recreational use. There is only one question remaining: Will the USFS follow the science and do what is best for wildlife and the public, or bow to environmentalist emotional appeals and propose a plan that continues on its current non-management path? 46 Euro 2016: England lacked cutting edge in draw against Slovakia Saint-Atienne (France): England captain Gary Cahill said his side had lacked "cutting edge" as they drew 0-0 with Slovakia and finished second in Group B to Wales. Gary Cahill "We tried and tried and they shut the door in our face," Cahill told ITV. England coach Roy Hodgson made six changes to the line-up, but Cahill denied it had affected the result. "I don't think so," he said. "We had the ball constantly, we just didn't quite have that cutting edge to open them up. In games like that you need something little bit special. "We obviously tried to bring fresh legs in there, it's very difficult to play this intense and in this heat and I think we looked good. On another day we should win. " A dejected England midfielder Dele Alli (centre) walks past Slovakian players after the Euro 2016 match in Saint-Etienne on Monday. Pic/AFP Cahill agreed that the opening 1-1 draw with Russia had ultimately cost England dear. "Of course. We may as well move on, we know we're second in the group now and we know we've got a huge game coming up. " England left-back Bertrand said, "It was frustrating not to get the win which I thought the we deserved. They defended in numbers and were resilient, and unfortunately we couldn't unlock the door. We remain very positive in our overall performance in this game and in previous games. "Hopefully when we come up against teams in the next stages, they will hopefully give us more space. "

UK elections: David Beckham throws weight behind David Cameron London: England football legend David Beckham yesterday threw his weight behind Prime Minister David Cameron’s push to keep Britain in the European Union. David Beckham. Pic/AFP "We live in a vibrant and connected world where together as a people we are strong. For our children and their children we should be facing the problems of the world together and not alone," said the 41-year-old former England captain in favour of Britain remaining within the 28-member economic bloc, the country’s largest market. Beckham said his experience of playing internationally had also given him an appreciation of European cultures. His intervention two days ahead of the June 23 referendum is likely to help swing many of those still undecided voters.

France labour dispute: Fury as police ban Paris rally French police have imposed a ban on a demonstration by unions in Paris on Thursday, citing violence which marred previous protests. The planned march was the latest in a series of mass demonstrations and strike action against controversial changes to employment laws. Union leaders had previously rejected a government offer to allow a stationary rally instead. Some now say they will risk large fines or even prison to defy the ban. There have been outraged reactions on Twitter, with some now saying there are two reasons to protest: against the draft labour law and in favour of the right to protest. Police under pressure: Who would be a French cop? Does France's workforce really have it easy? In a communique (in French) , the Paris police force said it had "made known its concerns about Thursday's planned protest in view of the high pressures placed on police in previous months, the demands of policing the Euros and the significant terrorist threat". In addition, it said, previous protests had descended to unacceptable levels of violence, with many members of the security forces injured. It singled out the last protest on 14 June , when hundreds of masked protesters threw chunks of paving and set cars ablaze and a children's hospital in central Paris was badly damaged. Police responded with tear gas and water cannon. The protests coincided with the Euro 2016 football championship, which were marred by fan violence in Marseille and Lille. Alternative proposals, the police said, "address neither the security needs of people and property, nor the demands on police resources given the terrorist threat". Given that the offer to hold a static protest had been rejected, the communique said, the police commissioner "has no choice but to prohibit the event". The ban follows what French media describe as a tense day of negotiation on Tuesday over the march. There were reportedly divisions in the government, with Prime Minister Manuel Valls pressing for a ban while Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve President Francois Hollande sought a compromise. Two union leaders, Jean-Claude Mailly of Force Ouvriere and Philippe Martinez of the CGT, had an urgent meeting Mr Cazeneuve after the police decision on Wednesday and were due to consider their next step with union colleagues. Mr Mailly said after the meeting that he was neither optimistic nor pessimistic. He has already threatened to defy the ban, risking a large fine and months in jail, Le Figaro website reports. That threat has been echoed by left-wing firebrand Olivier Besancenot. Many on Twitter complained that it was illegal to place an outright ban on demonstrations while some pointed out that the ban was "the best way to bring the masses on to the streets". Others, meanwhile, accused President Hollande of hypocrisy, citing a 2012 tweet in which he stated: "The only right we have is the right to protest as long as necessary. " The government's labour reform makes it easier for employers to hire and fire workers. It would also relax the limit on working hours. However, the bill was watered down before ministers decided to force it through the lower house of parliament to avoid it being voted down.

Plane lands for South Pole Amundsen-Scott base rescue A small Canadian plane with skis has reached the South Pole on a daring medical rescue mission. The Twin Otter aircraft made a journey of thousands of miles through 24-hour winter darkness and in temperatures of -60C (-76F) to reach two people needing medical attention. They are working at the Amundsen-Scott research station. They may both be flown to a British base 2,400km (1,500 miles) away in the Antarctic. There are fewer than 50 people at the Amundsen-Scott research station, which is run by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). It has a doctor and a physician's assistant. Two Twin Otter planes were involved in the rescue. One stayed at the British base as back-up, while one continued on the nine-hour journey to the South Pole. "It went all according to plan," said Peter West from the NSF. He did not disclose the identity or the medical conditions of the patients, who are working for the US company Lockheed Martin, which provides logistical services to the base. It is not clear whether both will have to be flown out. Hundreds of science researchers at the South Pole are cut off from the world for the entire six-month winter every year and it is rare for patients to be airlifted. The first medical evacuation from the station was in 1999, for a doctor who had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Jerri Nielsen was the only medical professional on site and administered her own chemotherapy for months before the Sun rose again and she could be airlifted. The first base at the site of the current Amundsen-Scott station was built in 1957. It is used for scientific research and features a powerful space telescope.

Ginger and acupressure 'options for morning sickness' Taking ginger or using acupressure on the wrist may help some women with mild morning sickness, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) says. Its guidance suggests these therapies could offer alternatives to women who want to avoid medication. But it says anti-sickness drugs and hospital treatment are important in more severe cases. The recommendations are in line with advice from NHS watchdog NICE. Nausea and vomiting affects about 80% of pregnant women. For many, it disappears within the first four months - though symptoms are not confined to the morning hours as its commonly used name suggests. In its first guidance on the issue, the RCOG says treatment can vary around the UK and there is an occasional lack of understanding of the condition's severity. Its guidelines weigh up the evidence for a range of treatments - including complementary therapies - and set out specific options depending on how severe the condition is. Anti-sickness drugs can help in the many cases, it says. And some women may need day visits to hospitals or longer admissions for fluids and medication. Meanwhile, for women with mild or moderate symptoms who do not want to use drugs, acupressure (wearing a special bracelet that applies pressure) may help. The guidance also mentions studies showing that ginger can provide some relief - including one study using ginger biscuits. But NHS Choices warns that as ginger products are not licensed for medical use in the UK, supplements should be bought only from reputable sources. And anyone still experiencing problems should seek medical advice. Meanwhile, the RCOG says hypnosis is not recommended as there is not enough evidence to establish whether it is effective. For women with more difficult symptoms, including a very severe form, known as hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), specialist treatment, including hospital admission and mental health support, should be offered, it suggests. Caitlin Dean, who chairs the Pregnancy Sickness Support charity and had HG in three pregnancies, said: "On top of the nausea and vomiting (this could be up to 30 times a day), I had a pounding headache, incredibly heightened sense of smell and excessive saliva. "My days would be spent lying in bed with a quiet audio-book as I couldn't read or watch TV because it all made me sick. "I soon became very dehydrated and was admitted to hospital at eight weeks pregnant. "I was housebound for most of the pregnancy, which made me feel incredibly lonely. " Dr Manjeet Shehmar, lead author of the guidelines, said many women with persistent symptoms were not receiving the treatment they needed. "Women with persistent nausea can often feel that there is a lack of understanding of their condition," she said. "They may be unable to eat healthily, have to take time off work and feel a sense of grief or loss for what they perceive to be a normal pregnancy. "It is therefore vital that women with this condition are given the right information and support and are made aware of the therapeutic and alternative therapies available to help them cope. "

Gang networks in Europe 'forcing children to steal' Dutch police say some 300 children are being exploited across Europe by gangs that force them to steal €1,000 (£770; $1,100) a day. Four networks were uncovered operating in the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Croatia and Bosnia, police said. Six missing children from the Netherlands were found in appalling conditions in Spain last week when a couple in their 40s were arrested. Prosecutors say the practice is a modern type of slavery. The operation began over a year ago when investigators at Amsterdam Central Station noticed that a group of children were being used repeatedly as pickpockets under the control of adults, said a police statement (in Dutch) . Children were taken out of school to carry out shoplifting and pickpocketing, and authorities believe under-age girls were sexually abused and became pregnant. When police arrested the Eastern European couple in a raid on a flat in the Spanish city of Barcelona on 15 June, they found a baby and five other children under the age of 15. The couple are thought to be part of a child exploitation network and are expected to be extradited to the Netherlands. They are suspected of people trafficking, using false identities and removing underage children from competent authorities. According to Dutch media, some of the children were under youth protection supervision and had previously been reported missing from an asylum seeker centre in Ter Apel in the north-eastern Netherlands. "These days we look at whether a child is a victim of people trafficking," said prosecutor Warner ten Kate. "I feel that this is the tip of the iceberg, that there are more children in the Netherlands who are victims of this. " Police believe the children had come from poor families in Bosnia and other countries in the former Yugoslavia.

Syria conflict: Air strikes on IS-held Raqqa 'kill 18 civilians' Activists say at least 18 civilians have been killed in air strikes in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the headquarters of so-called Islamic State. Dozens more people were injured in the raids on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It said it was not able to determine who carried out the strikes, though another group blamed Russian warplanes. There were further air strikes on Raqqa on Wednesday, but this time reportedly by the US-led coalition against IS. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the raids, one of which hit the city council building. Islamic State group: The full story Islamic State crisis in seven charts Life and death in Syria The Syrian Observatory reported that Tuesday's air strikes in Raqqa targeted several areas of the city, which has been controlled by IS since August 2013. Six children were among those killed, the UK-based monitoring group said, warning that the death toll was likely to rise because many of the injured were in a critical condition. The anti-IS activist group, Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS), listed the names of 18 people, including two children, who it said were killed in three raids by Russian aircraft on Tuesday. Twenty-eight others were wounded, it added. RBSS said at least one air strike targeted an area popular among foreign fighters - jihadists who have migrated to Syria to fight for IS. IS militants in Raqqa province and neighbouring Aleppo are under pressure from two separate offensives by Russian-backed Syrian government forces and an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters supported by the US. On Tuesday, the militants reportedly drove back government forces around the town of Tabqa, 40km (25 miles) west of Raqqa, after two days of fierce clashes that left 40 soldiers and allied militiamen dead. The IS-linked Amaq news agency posted video purportedly showing militants in control of the Thawra oil field, which the government forces recaptured on Sunday. Fighters from the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces are meanwhile besieging IS-held Manbij, 110km (70 miles) to the north-west. At least three suicide bombers attacked SDF positions outside the town on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Observatory. Fighting also continued on Tuesday between government troops and rebel forces around the divided northern city of Aleppo.

57 Pinocchio watch: the Ukip MP Douglas Carswell and Tory minister Penny Mordaunt's outright lies about the EU What is the OECD position on Brexit? Douglas Carswell, the Ukip MP for Clacton, is proving what everybody already knows about the EU debate - that the truth is irrelevant. Tweeting a poster put out by the Hungarian government, he accused Remainers of being on the same side as Jobbik - a far-right party in Hungary: Here's the poster in full: What Carswell doesn't seem to be bothered about correcting is that the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, is actually the current leader of the ruling Fidesz party - and has nothing to do with the extremist Jobbik party. So adamant has Carswell been about refusing corrections on Twitter that he has attracted the attention of a Hungarian government spokesperson, Zoltan Kovacs, who is calling on him to apologise: Your mole has noticed that prominent pro-Leave politicians are increasingly getting away with outright lies. The Armed Forces minister Penny Mordaunt recently insisted that the UK does not have a veto over whether Turkey joins the EU (watch below). This is just factually wrong. The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) has warned strongly against Brexit. In its policy paper on the likely consequences of Britain leaving the EU, the OECD comes out firmly for remain, citing serious risks not only to the UK economy but to the rest of the OECD, especially European countries. What are the dangers of Brexit that the OECD forsees? According to OECD policy paper The Economic Consequences of Brexit : A Taxing Decision , leaving the EU “would be a major negative shock to the UK economy, with economic fallout in the rest of the OECD, particularly other European countries. In some respects, Brexit would be akin to a tax on GDP, imposing a persistent and rising cost on the economy that would not be incurred if the UK remained in the EU.” The OECD predicts that by 2020, UK GDP would be more than 3 percent lower under Brexit than if Britain remained within the EU, equivalent to a per-household cost of £2,200; by 2030, the OECD claims that the GDP shortfall would be over 5 per cent, equating to £3,200 per household. Will this affect voters? Polling by Ipsos Mori suggests not: two thirds of voters believe that their standard of living won’t be affected by Brexit. And worryingly for Remain, pro-EU voters were more likely to shift position in response to a threat to their standard of living, while Leave voters remained committed even when told they would personally lose out. Just 7 per cent of Leave supporters surveyed said they would vote Remain if Brexit left them £500 a year worse off. That means that subsequent Vote Leave attacks on the independence of the (partially EU-funded) OECD are possibly beside the point: Leave voters are unlikely to change their allegiance for financial reasons. Nevertheless, reports from the UK Treasury, the LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance and the Confederation of British Industries have all reached similar conclusions on the economic consequences of Brexit.

How Ray Parlour straddled a culture clash in English football Haystack in a haystack: travels around the human genome With 20 minutes of the 2002 FA Cup final remaining, Arsenal’s Sylvain Wiltord played a smart pass behind the Chelsea midfield. “Oh, it’s all right,” said the television presenter Tim Lovejoy, a Chelsea supporter, commentating on Sky’s FanZone. “It’s only Ray Parlour.” But Marcel Desailly backed off and Parlour kept advancing, then he whipped in a shot from 25 yards to give Arsenal a lead that Fredrik Ljungberg doubled ten minutes later. It was a fine and important goal but the moment also summed up Parlour: underestimated, underappreciated and never taken entirely seriously. Although he won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, Parlour was capped only ten times for England. In part, that was because he was competing for a place with David Beckham, but he wasn’t helped by an incident shortly before the 1998 World Cup, when he suffered a calf strain after being called up to join Glenn Hoddle’s England squad. Hoddle insisted that Parlour see his faith healer, Eileen Drewery. When she ran her fingers over his head as part of her diagnostic process, he asked for a short back and sides. Hoddle didn’t take him to the World Cup. My favourite quotation from Charles Darwin: “Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.” In that brief sentence, the founder of modern biology unknowingly summarised in advance the history of genetics, from the eugenical ideas of his half-cousin Francis Galton to Bill Clinton’s statement that the human genome sequence was “the most important, the most wondrous map ever produced by humankind”. The eugenics movement led to disasters known to everyone. It is not yet dead: Francis Crick once claimed that “no newborn should be declared human until it has passed certain tests regarding its genetic endowment”, and our own government’s decision to deny child support to poor people irresponsible enough to have more than two offspring (the agent of the policy has four) is in the same tradition. As a reminder of our ignorance, the DNA chart looks more like a medieval atlas than a modern map – with geneticists, in unconscious parallel to Swift’s words, the geographers who “in Afric maps/With savage pictures fill their gaps,/And o’er inhabitable downs/Place elephants for want of towns”. Siddhartha Mukherjee’s book is a tourist guide to the new Africa, the human genome. The chart of that continent does indeed have too many metaphorical elephants and a noticeable shortage of productive towns: there are only about 20,000 working genes in the conventional sense, rather than the millions once assumed to exist (and why do tomatoes have more than we do?). They are surrounded by vast numbers of more or less mysterious molecular beasts, some of them parasites that invaded long ago, others the mouldering corpses of once-noble creatures, and yet more – the so-called junk – known more in its anatomy than in what it actually does. Lengthy as this book is (and Mukherjee might have gained from turning to his own account of the genome’s ability to cut out redundant and repetitive sections), it gives a full and lively account of the development of the subject, from its birth in the 19th century to its infancy in the 20th and its uncertain adolescence in the 21st.

59 Poor air quality alert issued The Air Quality Scale used in Atlanta: “Good” AQI is 0 to 50. Air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk. “Moderate” AQI is 51 to 100. Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people. For example, people who are unusually sensitive to ozone may experience respiratory symptoms. “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” AQI is 101 to 150. Although the general public is not likely to be affected at this AQI range, people with lung disease, older adults and children are at a greater risk from exposure to ozone, whereas persons with heart and lung disease, older adults and children are at greater risk from the presence of particles in the air. “Unhealthy” AQI is 151 to 200. Everyone may begin to experience some adverse health effects, and members of the sensitive groups may experience more serious effects. “Very Unhealthy” is AQI is 201 to 300. This would trigger a health alert signifying that everyone may experience more serious health effects. “Hazardous” AQI is greater than 300. This would trigger health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is more likely to be affected. LEARN MORE: Smog alerts in Atlanta: Understanding code red, code orange air quality warnings | Check today’s Air Quality Index for Atlanta

SABC3 press conference hijacked by Hlaudi Motsoeneng Cape Town – SABC boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng on Wednesday once again took over and steered a press conference completely off- message that was supposed to be about the new SABC3 schedule and logo. Slamming staff for sleeping at work, attacking the media, saying he was an actor and saying people won’t know it but white people love him, a ranting Hlaudi Motsoeneng, who didn't use a script, once again veered sharply off message. Motsoeneng, the SABC's chief operating officer (COO), said: "SABC will do what we believe is right for South Africa. SABC won't be the same. This is a new SABC. "We have taken a decision. And if I've taken a decision, no turning back. You'll make your own noise. We want to make sure we empower our own people. "We as SABC we're doing very well. 90% we're doing very well. Reality is, international content isn't doing well for the SABC," said Hlaudi Motsoeneng. "You must watch SABC3. you will see amazing stuff. " He continued: "You don't see youth content on our platform. From 1 November we will have a youth content. We will go to universities and broadcast live in those universities. Not about politics, about the issues that affect young people. "I was an actor. The changes you see you see is in my blood," said Motsoeneng. "You don't know that I work with white people. And they like me. I work with everyone. "You who write bad about us, I think about you every time. I perform well when I have forces that don't support me". Talking in the third person, Motsoeneng said: "When this man takes the podium, people clap hands. "People have been playing here at the SABC. Sleeping here. Playing here and drinking tea. " He again said that the SABC will introduce a uniform for workers. "We will have uniform at SABC. But not every day. Why other people have uniform? "

Shaked, Erdan move forward with initiative to remove terror content from net Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Wednesday announced they have instructed their respective ministries and the police to formulate a new bill for removing terror content from the internet and social media. The principles of the bill would be that the state would issue a warning letter to internet, domain name and social media providers who indirectly host and can potentially remove the content as site administrators. If the providers remove the terror content there would be no further action. If they do not remove the content, the bill would allow the state to request the courts to order the providers to remove the content. A statement from Shaked's office did not specify what sanctions providers would face if they ignored the court order, but the threat letter would mention the country's criminal law, suggesting their could be a range of criminal and financial sanctions. The justice minister issued the statement following her meeting on Wednesday with top Facebook officials visiting the country. She said that she expressed serious concerns that Facebook and other providers are not doing enough to police terror content being spread on their users' sites.

NYPD allegedly shuts Lincoln Tunnel lane for Israeli billionaire Did Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev have the NYPD close a lane for him in New York's Lincoln tunnel? According the the New York Pos t, that is exactly what federal authorities are investigating as part of a larger probe into corruption in the NYPD. Details of the incident came from a cooperating witness who’s been identified by sources as Jona Rechnitz, a real-estate developer who once worked for Leviev's company Africa Israel, the Post reported Wednesday. Rechnitz told the feds that the escort was arranged by his pal Jeremy Reichberg, “using his connections in local law enforcement agencies,” court papers say. The complaint doesn’t say when the lane closure occurred. Law enforcement sources said Reichberg’s request did not go through official channels and there was no documentation about the incident. But pulling it off would be an exceedingly easy maneuver that could be accomplished by a single cop on foot working in concert with the cops in the car or cars, a source said. “All you’d need to do, would be to move two or three traffic plastic cones for a few minutes, let the person through and then move back the traffic cones a few minutes later after you wanted to re-open the lane,” the source said. Reichberg was arrested Monday, along with NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Harrington and Deputy Inspector James Grant. A lawyer for one of Leviev’s daughters denied that Leviev had received the police escort. Leviev, 59, is a renowned Isareli investor in precious stones. Born in Uzbekistan to a prominent Jewish family, Leviev moved to Israel when he was 15 and got his start as an apprentice at a diamond polishing business. After a stint in the IDF, Leviev went into the diamond business and is credited with breaking the De Beers Group’s stranglehold on the mining industry. He currently owns mines in Africa and Russia and operates pricey jewelry boutiques in New York, London, Dubai and Singapore.

68 Father-of-nine, 40, is bitten on the PENIS by an agitated dog A father-of-nine has described the moment a dangerous dog sank its teeth into his penis as he attempted to deliver some parcels. Delivery driver Daniel Dythe, 40, from from Chelmsford, Essex, was delivering a Christmas parcel when the Rottweiler- German shepherd cross named Chief bit down on his genitals - twice. The delivery driver desperately tried to move away but the dog growled and sunk its teeth in for a second time, tightening its grip. Mr Dythe has now been left with two inch long scars on his penis but was pleased when doctors confirmed he has no lasting functional damage. He said: 'I haven't had any long term damage but I've lost a bit of my dignity and whenever I look down to have a wee I now see my scarred penis. 'There was no growling, no warning, nothing. I looked down and and the dog was hanging off the end of my penis. 'It was only on there for about 20 seconds but it felt like an eternity. I thought my penis was going to be in bits.' Mr Dythe needed four days off work following the attack on December 18 and had to take a week-long course of antibiotics to prevent infection. He said the dog only let go when its owner, Alexandra Metcalfe, 57, came outside and started screaming. 'I've delivered there before and know that they had dogs there but didn't think anything of it,' said Mr Dythe. 'I knocked on the door and a boy answered. I was getting him to sign for the parcel and the next thing I know I just felt this excruciating pain. 'Eventually the woman came out and started screaming and the dog got off me. 'I got in my van and took a picture of it and sent it to my wife before I rushed off to hospital.' Mr Dythe went to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, where nurses cleaned him up and discharged him four hours later. Metcalfe, a nurse, pleaded guilty to owning a dog dangerously out of control at Chelmsford Magistrates Court on June 15. Defending herself, she said: 'He did run out, he did grind on the man. We saw no evidence of injury but he says he was, so if he was then so be it. 'Chief went back into the utility room with his tail between his legs. I apologised to him, I offered him medical attention.' Mr Dythe hopes his experience will warn other pet owners to keep their dogs under control. He added: 'If it had been a child in my place it wouldn't have stood a chance. I don't blame the animals I blame the owners because they are the ones in charge. 'If it was up to me they'd have the destruction orders, not the dogs. I've got nothing against dogs. I grew up with Alsatians as a kids and I've got a French bulldog puppy called Marley now.' He said: 'Every time I knock on a door now I'm worried that something's going to happen. 'People need to be responsible dog owners stop things like this happening again.' The court heard how Chief had previously attacked two other people and Chair of the bench, David Murtagh, ordered the 'out of control' dog be put down. He said: 'This is the third report of Chief attacking someone. You have dogs which you freely admitted in court out loud run free, knowing that they're dangerous. 'A medium level of harm was caused to a very sensitive part of the person's body. 'It is an out of control dog. We are going to impose a destruction order.' Metcalfe had 21 days from her conviction last Wednesday to appeal the destruction order on Chief.

Foul Legacy: The Children of Terrorism What is it like to be raised by a militant or religious extremist? This is not something people like to think about, raising uncomfortable images. Children ensnared in a reality that promotes extremism, punishes free thinking, and kills dissenters. Children trapped in a life of indoctrination which makes the abnormal acceptable and the irrational logical. Terrorist attacks have become a daily occurrence globally, and many extremists are groomed from childhood to carry-out heinous acts of death and destruction. As the daughter of a militant Islamist who moved us to Nigeria when I was a child, I know how challenging it is to escape these early influences. Exposure to radicalism is a pernicious experience against which all survivors struggle. In my life it manifests in a tendency to view the world through the corrupted lens of the racist rhetoric and conspiracy paradigms of my father’s beliefs. I am vigilant in every action and hypersensitive to my spoken and written word, constantly examining each for hints of corruption. Extremism is a virus passed from person to person, and children raised in extremism enforced through religious autocracy and fortified by patriarchal tyranny are most susceptible. Outsiders frequently misunderstand the extent to which family members, particularly children, have no recourse or escape from this terrible imprisonment. In fact, even contemplating escape results in an existential crisis for these victims. First, there is the likely loss of financial or communal support, and even death if caught. Second, and more puzzling, is the conflicted emotional connection that exists with the extremist. Love persists despite physical and mental abuse. The idea of being separated from their parents is a frightening concept. So, what are the children of extremists to do, or more importantly what responsibility does the community bear with regard to these children? Therein lies the quandary. Some ask if the solution should be the removal of these children at an early age to ensure that they are not indoctrinated into fundamentalist religious views. But who will raise these children? In war torn countries dominated by extremist organizations like ISIL, al-Qaeda, and Hezbollah, there is little we can do for such children as most are either conscripted, or willingly take up with these groups for protection or to have access to basic necessities. In the Talmud, there is a concept that addresses the issue of “trapped or captured children.” It is the concept of Tinok Shenishba. Which refers to Jews who inadvertently sin because they were not raised properly, attributing their misbehavior to the brainwashing that passed for child- rearing and education. According to Rabbi Ronen Lubitch of Moshav Nir Etzion in Israel, “The idea that lies behind the concept is that the secularist has a status of being compelled (oness), and the fact that he does not observe commandments is a result of the fact that he had no choice other than to live according to the irreligious education that he received. In Halachic language the term “oness” is simply a technical definition, which can be utilized to exempt people from criminal transgressions that they were coerced to do.” (Source: Beit Midrash for Jewish Thought) Therefore, should children raised in fundamentalist households be allowed to remain in them when the risk of becoming radicalized is high? Or should such exposure equate to child abuse, giving authorities the right to remove these children from these homes for their own good and that of the community? But then the question remains: who will raise these children? What responsibility do we as a community bear when these children who have been coerced by radical environment commit immoral crimes? Should they be held to a different standard? Should they receive lesser sentences based upon the fact that as Tinok Shenishba they lacked the free will to establish the moral rectitude which would cause them to reject violence? There are no easy answers, but it is a question we must contemplate even as we guard ourselves from external terrorism. Whether terrorists are Muslim (as my father was) or loyal to some other religion or ideology, neither precludes nor precipitates this type of heinous behavior. The clearest determinant of fanaticism is indoctrination and up- close exposure to extremism. There are no easy answers and there are no simple solutions, but the foul legacy of terrorism is that the children raised in extremism today will likely become the enemy we fight against tomorrow. 2016-06-22 13:51 Ayanna Nahmias spectator.org

The Price of Going Obama Green Proponents of green energy like to point out how the costs have come down — and they have. Though renewable energy, such as wind and solar, are not expected to drop to fossil fuel levels anytime in the near future and recent growth has been propped up by mandates and tax incentives. But there are other, more subtle aspects of the Obama administration’s efforts that have had negative impacts that are not felt for years after the policies are implemented. By then, it will be too late to do much about them. We know that the push toward renewables has hurt the coal industry. As Hillary Clinton gleefully exclaimed: “we’re going to put a whole lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” We are already seeing this happen all over the country. Dozens of coal mining companies have gone bankrupt since President Obama took office and those that are still functioning are doing so with far fewer workers. One such mine is in the Four Corners region of New Mexico — the San Juan Mine — which is one of the largest underground coal mines in the world. It has been a “top employer” in the region. Westmoreland Coal Company purchased the mine from BHP Billiton, with the sale completed on February 1, 2016. At the time, the mine employed more than 400 people. Shortly thereafter, 11 salaried staff lost their jobs and on June 16, another 85 workers — both salaried and hourly — were laid off. Which, according to the Albuquerque Journal, was “necessary because the San Juan Generating Station, which uses all the mine’s coal, plans to retire two of its four units as part of a negotiated agreement among plant operator Public Service Company of New Mexico [PNM], the Environmental Protection Agency, the Navajo Nation, and the state of New Mexico.” The “agreement” to shut down half the power plant — thereby cutting the immediate need for coal — is the result of the EPA’s 2011 Regional Haze Program that, according to a report from the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, “seeks to remedy visibility impairment at federal National Parks and Wilderness Areas.” This, the report states, “is an aesthetic regulation, and not a public health standard” — though the results will be undetectable to the human eye. For this, nearly a quarter of the mine’s workforce has been terminated. The Albuquerque Journal cites Westmoreland’s executive vice president, Joe Micheletti, as being unwilling to “comment on whether he expected to see more layoffs in the coming months.” It also states that PNM has promised “not to lay off any employees at the stations as a result of the unit closures” — though through attrition employment is down 20 percent from two years ago. The reality is, anti-fossil fuel groups like the Sierra Club wanted the entire plant shut down. In 2018, PNM will have to plead its case before the Public Regulatory Commission to keep the San Juan Generating Station functioning past 2022. PNM is currently considering a plan for meeting its needs for electricity without it. If the plant closes, all jobs, approximately 800, at both the mine and the generating station will be gone — greatly impacting the local economy. Obama’s far-reaching green energy policies are insidious — hurting consumers in ways we don’t even think of. On June 10, Stephen Yurek, president and CEO of the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), gave testimony before the U. S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and Power. He addressed the nearly 40-year-old Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) — which, he said, “has not been updated to reflect new technologies and economic realities” and “has been misapplied by the Department of Energy [DOE].” The Obama Administration has run amuck in its application of EPCA — issuing regulation after regulation. Yurek backs this up by pointing out the difference in the Clinton and Obama administrations: “While the Clinton Administration’s DOE issued just six major efficiency rules during his eight years in office, the Obama Administration’s DOE issued eight major efficiency rules in 2014 alone — a record according to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. And DOE’s Unified Agenda indicate that between 2015 and the end of the administration, 11 additional major efficiency rules can be expected to be issued.” These rules, Yurek explained, “use unrealistic assumptions” to create “higher efficiency levels than are economically justified for consumers.” He encourages Congress to force the DOE to “consider the real-world cumulative impact of product efficiency standards among agencies, businesses, and consumers” and suggests that “as DOE promulgates rules according to an accelerated regulatory schedule, necessary constructive dialogue falls by the wayside.” Yurek summarizes: “An endless cycle of efficiency rulemakings continues to have an adverse impact on our global competitiveness and the American jobs we create.” This practice hurts consumers as “When new products and equipment cost more than consumers can afford, they find alternatives, some of which compromise their comfort and safety, while saving less energy or none at all or in some cases using more energy.” In the name of energy efficiency, on December 6, 2013, Obama issued a memorandum ordering federal buildings to triple renewable energy use. He declared: “Today I am establishing new goals for renewable energy as well as new energy-management practices.” Now, two and half years later, we get a taste of what his federal building initiative is costing taxpayers. On June 16, 2016, the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s (FHFA) Office of Inspector General released a report — precipitated by an anonymous hotline complaint — on the 53 percent cost escalation at Fannie Mae’s extravagant new downtown D. C. building. As a result of the financial crisis, mortgage giant Fannie Mae received a bailout of $116.1 billion in taxpayer funds and FHFA now serves as the conservator over Fannie Mae. The Inspector General found that no one in the FHFA Division of Conservatorship “was aware of the 53% increase in the estimated build-out costs for Fannie Mae’s new office space.” “Because Fannie Mae is an entity in the conservatorship of the U. S. government,” the report states: “FHFA, as conservator, will need to assess the anticipated efficiencies of specific proposed features against estimated costs of those features and determine whether the efficiencies warrant the costs.” The watchdog report found the ballooning costs created “significant financial and reputational risks.” Addressing the excessive cost, Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), chairman of the House subcommittee with oversight over Fannie Mae, said: “Like a child with a credit card in a toy store, the bureaucrats at Fannie Mae just couldn’t help themselves. After being forced to bail out the GSE’s [Government- Sponsored Enterprises] to the tune of nearly $200 billion [which includes Freddie Mac], American taxpayers now get the news that they are underwriting lavish spending at Fannie Mae’s new downtown Washington, D. C. headquarters. So while Americans around the country are living paycheck to paycheck, Washington insiders are blowing through budgets by designing glass enclosed bridges and rooftop decks.” In response to the call for “immediate, sustained comprehensive oversight from FHFA,” Melvin L. Watt, FHFA director, defended himself. In the face of the Inspector General’s caustic criticism, he claimed that many of the upfront investments would save money over time. Watt’s memorandum only offers two such examples and one is more efficient lighting. He claims: “upfitting space with more expensive LED lighting instead of less expensive fluorescent lighting would result in significantly cheaper operating costs.” The other example he provided was window shades. These are just three recent examples of Obama Administration policies that were put in place years before the resulting job losses and costs to consumers and taxpayers are felt. Fortunately, for now, the Supreme Court put a stay on one of his most intrusive and expensive programs — the Clean Power Plan. But there are plenty of little rulemakings, programs, and memorandums that will still be impacting jobs and increasing costs long after Obama is out of office.

Obama’s ‘Great Religion’ According to a Breitbart story about an upcoming book, Hillary Clinton once hurled a Bible at the back of a secret service agent’s head. Had the incident involved the Koran, she might have felt the need to issue an apology. But in the leftist circles in which she travels the Bible qualifies as hate literature. It has long ceased to be a holy book. Indeed, Barack Obama, who quotes so reverentially from the Koran, felt free in his memoirs to criticize the Bible for its antiquated views and chided St. Paul for his homophobia. He described Abraham as a crackpot on whom child protective services should have been called. The most beautiful sound in the world is the Islamic call to prayer, according to Obama, who spent part of his upbringing in Indonesia, where he “heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and at the fall of dusk.” In his famous Cairo speech, he set the tone for his passive campaign against Islamic terrorism by promising never to be “at war with Islam” and reminded his audience that he hailed from a “generation of Muslims.” He was “steeped in Islam,” according to his Chicago pastor Jeremiah Wright, who told author Ed Klein that whether Obama ever actually converted to Christianity was never clear to him. It “was hard to tell,” he told Klein. Wright said that church was not Obama’s “thing” and that his attendance had no significance apart from the exigencies of politics. Hillary, at least during her campaign against him, also signaled confusion about his religion. Her campaign circulated a picture of Obama in Islamic garb. But he wasn’t a Muslim, “as far as I know,” she offered in a vicious hedge. These days Hillary is quick to call such insinuations “bigotry.” For someone who wraps herself in the flag of the ACLU, she also strangely prides herself on having helped throw into jail the maker of the anti-Muhammad YouTube video. Somehow that never comes up during the conversations about the importance of artistic freedom at her Hollywood fundraisers. Religion is not a subject to which Democrats normally warm. In 2012, they were debating whether or not to include a mention of God in their platform. When party bosses decided that for reasons of optics they should overrule platform delegates and include it, the convention crowd booed. To the extent that it can muster up any enthusiasm for religious freedom, the party of secularism directs it to Islam. During the controversy over the HHS contraceptive mandate, Obama told Christians to lighten up and liberalize. He told the Catholic bishops that they should listen to the heretics within their fold and just accept the mandate. Talk of Islam’s rigidity, however, troubles him. He is so fiercely protective of Islam that his Justice Department initially ordered the transcript of the Orlando jihadist’s words scrubbed clean. Obama didn’t want Americans to hear his references to Islam, the Koran, Allah, the West’s “filthy ways,” and ISIS. The Justice Department reversed course and released the transcript unredacted, but the administration’s original plan reveals the extent to which it sees itself as a magisterial custodian of and press agent for Islam. Omar Mateen “does not represent the religion of Islam,” declared Ronald Hopper, an FBI official. Who knew the FBI had been given the power to loose and bind over Islam? Only in the Obama administration would FBI officials feel free to present themselves as doctrinal guardians of “real” Islam. That is as odd a role for the FBI to play as it was for NASA to do “Islamic outreach” under the direction of Obama, in order to make Muslims “feel good about their historic contribution to science,” as former NASA administrator Charles Bolden put it. Obama often talks about the importance of “separating church and state.” Yet mosque and state are so close under his administration that his officials can say with dogmatic certainty who does and does not “represent the religion of Islam.” At the same time, the Obama administration, while acting like it enjoys the power to excommunicate Muslims it deems unrepresentative of the religion, has maintained a policy of non-interference in the Islamic world. In 2009, the Washington Post reported that the Obama administration assiduously “stays out” of Islamic debates, lest it offend radical clerics. In the 1980s, a scholar tried to get a grant from the Ford Foundation to promote moderate Islam in Indonesia. According to the story, his grant request was turned down by none other than Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, who worked for the Ford Foundation in Indonesia during that period. The fruit has not fallen far from the tree, implied the story, noting that Obama’s policy was no different than his mother’s. From time to time, an Omar Mateen forces Obama to make sounds about promoting moderation within Islam. But as he made clear in his Cairo speech, to which he had made a great show of inviting members of the Muslim Brotherhood, that project is of no real interest to him. It smacks too much of colonialism in his view, and, besides, the religion, as he described it last week, is already “great.” 2016-06-22 13:51 George Neumayr spectator.org

Breaking News English Lesson Last year was the worst year on record for the number of people who became refugees. The United Nations (U. N.) said that in 2015, over 65.3 million people were forced to leave their home or country. This is an increase of over five million from 59.5 million over the previous year. The 2015 figure is a 50 per cent increase from five years ago. It also means that one in every 113 people on the planet is now a refugee, an asylum seeker or someone displaced in their own country. The U. N. reported that: "Twenty- four people are displaced every minute. " It added that two-thirds of the forcibly displaced are refugees in their own country. The figures come from the "Global Trends" report marking World Refugee Day on June the 20th. The U. N. said the biggest reason for the record number of refugees in 2015 is war. Fighting in Syria, Afghanistan, Burundi and South Sudan has created the largest number of refugees. Half of them are children. The U. N. said more than 98,000 asylum requests in 2015 were made by unaccompanied children. This is the highest number ever seen. The U. N. added that: "Ninety percent of the forcibly displaced are [from] poor or middle income countries. " Many of them are escaping from wars only to face big problems at borders. These include walls and fences in Europe, tougher laws against immigration and xenophobia. The U. N. said the only way to overcome the problem is, "political action to stop conflicts".

What Donald Has Learned It has now been a year since Donald Trump formally became a politician and declared his candidacy for the nation’s highest office. Actually it has been a little over a year, because he was considering it for months before he declared from Trump Tower on June 16, 2015. What has he learned? Well, he has learned that while there are developers who would try to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge they do not hold a candle to politicians when it comes to lying, and that goes double for the mendacious political press. Moreover, he has learned that though there may be opportunists among his fellows in the real estate business they are veritable Good Samaritans when compared with the big league opportunists in politics. Donald, it is too late now to back out of politics, but when it comes to lying, opportunism, and general deceit now you know. Politics takes the cake? Indeed, it takes all cakes. Now you are up against the most corrupt politicians in American history, the Clintons. The Longs of Louisiana were pikers compared to them. The Clintons have been at it for over 35 years and never spent a night in jail —not even for a DUI, not even for cocaine violations back in the 1980s. Bill’s hapless half-brother, Roger, took the rap for Bill, along with Bill’s campaign contributor Dan Lasater. Throughout their years in Arkansas, Washington, D. C., and now on the world stage the Clintons have amassed a vast fortune, first in cattle futures, then in crooked land deals, then in campaign finance and fundraising for the Clinton Foundation and Shake Down Project, Inc. Along the way Bill has abused women and Hillary has covered for him with her private investigators (some of whom are in jail), her artful use of political pressure, and her influence with the press. More recently Bill has spoken for huge fees here and abroad (Hillary has been on the circuit too), some arranged by Clinton factotums in the Clinton-run State Department. Just recently we have discovered that Bill made $16.46 million from the so- called Laureate University while the Clinton State Department shelled out $55 million to a consortium run by Laureate founder and chairman Douglas Becker. There are so many scams originating from the Clinton family that Donald Trump with only a year in politics is overwhelmed. What will he make of her flouting of government rules for handling her e-mails? She has repeatedly lied about it, from the little white lies about using her private server for convenience to felonies about co-mingling Foundation business with State Department business and about the server’s security. Then there are her lies about Benghazi. Americans were killed because of her negligence. She even lied to the dead Americans’ families. All of this is now known. At least it is known by people in politics and the media. Yet they have now made it clear that they are turning a deaf ear to the Clintons’ record of scandal. Former FBI Director Louis Freeh back in 1997, when asked during a Congressional hearing if he had ever seen anything like the number of witnesses fleeing the country or pleading the Fifth Amendment during another of the Clintons’ scandals, said: “Actually, I have.” He proceeded to liken the spectacle to his “16 years doing organized crime cases in New York City….” There is a quote that one does not hear these days. Now we have witnessed the murderous rage in Orlando where gays and Latinos were targeted for death by a “radical Islamist terrorist.” It is clear that the butcher was following the dictates of sharia law as practiced in various parts of the Islamic world. Orlando was just another chapter in a saga that contains bloody precursors such as, Ft. Hood, the Boston Marathon, and San Bernardino. The elites of the Democratic Party and the media are turning it into a debate about gun control, nomenclature, and tweets by Donald Trump. Very few observers have raised the question of Hillary Clinton accepting millions of dollars from Middle Eastern countries donating millions of dollars to the Clintons’ causes. Should the Clintons not at least give the money back? Donald Trump in his year as a politician has had an opportunity to learn a lot. He has learned that politics in America today is a dirty business, all the more so since Hillary, upon clinching the Democratic nomination, has been given a clean slate from the media that intensifies its attacks on him. The unanswered question is: Has Donald learned enough to beat her anyway? After all, he has learned to call her Crooked Hillary.

Education Reform Does Not Come One-Size- Fits-All Lately, education scholars at Washington, D. C.-based, nominally conservative think tanks have spun themselves into a tizzy about the education reform movement’s splintering into quarreling factions. Who knew such a monolithic movement existed? Even among strong advocates of parental choice, lively arguments have raged for decades over vouchers versus tax-credit scholarships, with each side arguing its proposal is the most powerful and/or practical way to empower families. Debate is healthy in a democracy, is it not? Thinking in terms of a single, cohesive agenda is perhaps more common in Washington, where think-tankers attend each other’s seminars and flock to government briefings. Why should any of this matter to the folks back in Grapevine or Grand Forks? Because advocacy from think-alike think tanks may influence policy in their school districts. Within these inner sanctums, there is concern about contrary ideologies intruding. In a May 25 essay, Thomas B. Fordham Institute Fellow Robert Pondiscio controversially observed, “Like the proverbial frog in a pot, education reformers on the political right find themselves coming to a slow boil in the cauldron of social justice activism.” As an example, Pondiscio reported conservative reformers “feeling unwelcome, uncomfortable, and cowed into silence” at a recent meeting of the New Schools Venture Fund in San Francisco. He fretted about leftists aggressively promoting a new orthodoxy on issues of race, class, and gender within the context of education reform while excluding conservative ideas. But what is wrong with having the gumption to debate the reform newcomers instead of acting as though your side owns this turf? Speaking of taking ownership, the long-time CEO of the Washington, D. C.- based Center for Education Reform, Jeanne Allen, issued a 22-page “manifesto” on June 15 — under her byline — seeking to reframe choice- based reform in terms of “innovation and opportunity,” as though those objectives are new. “This is a clarion call,” she announced in the opening sentence. Much of the manifesto deals in great detail with the level of tolerance for semi-autonomous charter schools within government-controlled school systems over the years. There is nothing about the tremendous promise of the next-generation voucher, the education savings account, and there is little about a steady increase in states adopting private-choice programs and the phenomenal growth of homeschooling. Allen’s manifesto expresses frustration that “our efforts to drive change have hit a wall. The reality is that more was accomplished in the first nine years of the education reform movement than in the past 16.” That reference is to the pace of states adopting strong charter-school authorization laws since 1991. Some states and localities now seek to drag charters back under a regulatory umbrella, and that legitimately concerns advocates. (Of course, charter schools are far from constituting the entirety of the education reform movement.) Charters have helped thousands of families find a tuition-free alternative to conventional public schools, and that is a good thing. However, because charter schools operate within the governmental system, the nature of the larger, controlling agenda becomes relevant. In that connection, the manifesto actually laments the demise of the federal No Child Left Behind law because it helped set the bar for student proficiency and defined the terms of accountability. The manifesto goes further and hammers the debate over Common Core as a “distraction” that “has drained our collective energies and focus on students.” Actually, the parents across the nation who have stood up against nationalized standards being imposed on their schools are entirely focused on students — their children and their neighbors’ children. And they see clearly that Common Core uniformity and true choice in education are incompatible. The manifesto is likely to deepen their suspicion that choice becomes problematic when linked to an agenda imposed from the top down. So, what is the clear call for action, the clarion call? Its name is the New Opportunity Agenda, the tenets of which are to be “innovation, flexibility, opportunity, and transparency.” The ideas discussed include drawing on new educational technologies, starting new schools, allowing public funds to follow children to schools of choice, and reporting test data in ways that can show how schools and districts are performing. The prospect of yet another agenda being developed by Washington insiders and passed down to the people may excite some who call themselves “education reformers,” but a different kind of reformer will argue for families having the freedom to pursue their own agendas for their children — with their individual decisions contributing to a vibrant marketplace that reshapes the face of U. S. education. Even though there is not a single education reform movement, there are ideas on which agenda-driven and liberty-loving advocates may agree. They should be able to talk with each other — and even welcome social- justice warriors to the conversation.

The American Spectator Baseball can be a feast for the sentimentalist. It’s a sport with sufficient competitive balance, and enough of the element of luck, that on any given day (night) the underdog can take it to the overdog. (See Al Weis, 1969, the 1988 Dodgers, et mucho al.) This happened again Monday night in Pittsburgh when Pirates third-string catcher Erik Kratz took Giant ace and World Series hero Madison Bumgarner long in the fifth for the only run of the game. The Pirates bullpen was golden, preserving the 1-0 win. A complete game loss for Bumgarner, the pride of Dudley Shoals, North Carolina and persona non grata in Kansas City. The pitch Kratz went yard on was not a bad one, low and inside. But Kratz went down and got it. The ball didn’t make it out by much. Giants left fielder Angel Pagan got a glove on the ball over the fence but couldn’t hold on to it. But a home run in the first row counts as much as one that makes it to an adjoining zip code. One might be able to find a more unlikely Giant killer than Kratz, but the search would take a while. Before Monday’s game Katz was hitting.045 — 2 for 44. He had gone 0-for-16 since the Pirates acquired him from the Angels. (The Pirates needed another catcher when Francisco Cervelli went on the DL with a broken left hand — Kratz was on MLB’s remainder table at $20K.) Kratz’s last dinger before Monday came in August of 2014. One hesitates to say that Kratz was overdue, as it’s hard to make the case that anyone with a lifetime BA of .205 is ever really due. This caveat noted, I hope and trust he enjoyed the moment. Lots of folks in Pittsburg did. In San Francisco many were doubtless asking, to paraphrase Butch Cassidy, “Who is this guy?” It’s not just Kratz’s batting numbers that don’t shout MAJOR LEAGUE! at you. He’s listed on the Pirates roster as 6-4 and 245 pounds. He looks every pound of it. (In the Pirates’ all-yellow uniforms, if they still use those, he would look like a school bus.) He has, how should I put this, something less than leading man looks. In fact, he looks like a guy you would more likely find on the third bar stool from the left at happy hour than in a Major League uniform. But last night he was as golden as the letters on the Pirates’ uniforms. Kratz game winner was set up by another unlikely solid performance. Pirate starter Jeff Locke handed the game over to the bullpen after 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the NL West division-leading Giants. This quality start was perhaps even more unlikely than the Cavs’ Sunday night win over Golden State. In Locke’s previous two starts he had allowed 18 runs and 20 hits over 8 2/3 innings. It’s hard not to suspect that the tag team of Kratz and Locke were only on the field Monday because Pirate manager Clint Hurdle considered the team’s prospects for the evening unpromising, so why not give the A-team a night off. As Private First Class Gomer Pyle, USMC, put it: “Surprise, surprise.” Against every reasonable expectation, Kratz and Locke were the A-team Monday night. The unlikely win put an end to the Giants’ eight-game winning streak and the Pirates’ five-game losing streak. What a game. What a story. I can picture a 90-year-old Vin Scully, in retirement, telling this story to some friends, or at one of the many speaking engagements that come his way. He’ll do it proud. In another time, the game would be meat for a James Thurber casual. It could appear in one of his collections next to “The Night the Bed Fell.” Is this game fun, or what? Oh, by the way, if you think it’s nice to fool Mother Nature, Giants beat the Pirates 15-4 Tuesday night. Kratz didn’t play.

Liberal Interventionism Runs Amok at State The Obama administration’s foreign policy in Syria has been a failure by any non-sociopathic measure, a policy quite literally at war with itself. And yet, some high ranking State Department officials want not less but more of this. To recap the insanity: Our government funded two different “moderate” rebel groups in Syria (CIA-backed Arab rebels and Pentagon- supported Kurdish forces) that mainly went to war with one another rather than take on strongman Bashar Assad or ISIS, the intended targets of those American guns and munitions. These two groups — “our guys,” we would normally call them, but that just doesn’t seem appropriate here — also initially rejected a U. S. proposed ceasefire when our government realized just how badly things had gotten out of hand. In addition to funding two proxy armies that fought each other, the Obama administration’s commitment to sort-of regime change helped arm and spread ISIS in Syria and Iraq, helped provoke a refugee crisis in Europe that now threatens to undo the European Union and helped cause such a rift with Vladimir Putin that Russia commenced bombing. You’d think that the U. S. State Department, as the part of our government that is charged with seeking diplomatic solutions to problems, would like to avoid more of that. But you would be wrong. In what has been dubbed the “Syria Revolt,” 51 mid- and high-level State Department officials signed a cable last week calling for airstrikes against the Assad regime, whose “systematic violations against the Syrian people are the root cause of the instability that continues to grip Syria and the broader region,” thus continuing to relegate ISIS to “JV” status. These 51 officials are being framed as brave “dissenters.” But that is not, as the kids say, wholly accurate. Granted, the cable was filed under the State Department’s official “dissent channel,” but there’s an important wrinkle here. As Jed Babbin spectated here the other day, “It’s entirely appropriate to view this petition with skepticism.” According to multiple press reports over several months, Secretary of State John Kerry agrees with them as he’s been pushing for a no-fly zone and airstrikes with President Obama in private. It was likely at his behest that these dissenters pressed Obama to go in heavy. There are two problems with their suggested approach. One, it wouldn’t work. Two, President Obama lacks any legal authority to do it. It wouldn’t work because of this little problem called ISIS. The U. S. government has been trying to find so-called moderate opposition to Syria’s strongman, but that’s a mirage. If we work to undermine Assad, the likely end result will be like what happened in Libya but on a larger scale: a weak and teetering central government that has no control over al Qaeda, ISIS, or other radical Islamist groups. This would be bad for Syrians and worse for America. And Obama has no legal authority to do so because, according to the Constitution, only the Congress can declare war. It hasn’t even given him technical war powers against ISIS for fear that he would take the fight into Syria. Enough congressmen — Democrats and most assuredly Republicans — have seen where Obama’s State Department-fueled liberal intervention has led us recently, and they don’t want to go there again. It’s hard to blame them.

Two teenage girls miraculously escape uninjured after one accelerated off the roof of a shopping centre carpark and plunged TEN METRES Two teenage girls have narrowly escaped serious injury after their car plunged off the roof of a shopping centre carpark. The 18-year- olds plunged ten metres to the lower level of Westfield Knox carpark in Melbourne's south east, at around 8.20pm on Tuesday, reported Leader. The driver accelerated her Volkswagon Golf through a secure barrier causing the car to flip and land upside down. The vehicle was left extensively damaged and the roof crumbled as a result of the drop. Surprisingly the girls were not trapped in the vehicle or physically injured. 'Neither of the two 18-year-old female occupants were trapped but both suffered shock and were checked by ambulance who attended at the scene, remarkably they were not injured,' Knox Sergeant Melanie Woods said. Spokeswoman Julia Clarke from Scentre Group, which owns and manages Westfield Knox, said the shopping centre is co- operating with police as an investigation is undertaken. 'Our first priority was to ensure the safety of the occupants who walked away from the incident without injury. Luckily there were no other shoppers in the area,' she said. The drivers were assessed by ambulance officers at the scene but were luckily left unhyurt and not taken to hospital.

'No help, baba': Helpless Soshanguve shop owners recount moments of terror Pretoria - Shop owners in Soshanguve recounted their terror at the hands of armed gangs of looters who marauded through the streets of the township after darkness fell on Tuesday. Scores of shops were raided, with everything of value stripped off the shelves. One spaza shop owner, who requested anonymity, said he saw a group of people storming into the shop, before all hell breaking loose. - Follow the Live Update here . "I was inside when they broke in. I managed to get out. While fleeing, more people came in. It was a lot of people. They took everything. I ran and they threw me with stones. One caught me and took my phone and everything I had in my pocket," he said. The man added they even took his driver’s licence. At another looted shop, a group of young men said the looters appeared to be drunk. "They were moving from one area to another with bottles of alcohol in hand. They got here and went on the rampage. They took everything that was in the shop," said one of them. "They also had guns and we could hear shots being fired in different areas. It was seriously bad," he added. The looters left a chilling message in front of the shop once they were done: "No help, baba. " A relative of the shop owner arrived on Wednesday morning to look for him, but didn't find him. 79 What happened to the rifle emoji? Autism and gut bacteria – the surprising link between the mind and the stomach Should there be a rifle emoji? According to an investigation released by BuzzFeed news this week , Apple and Microsoft say no. A new update to emoji, the series of tiny images available through most operating systems, is due to be released at the end of June by the Unicode Consortium, of which both Apple and Microsoft are voting members. And up to a relatively late stage of planning, the list of new emoji included both a rifle, and an image which showed a man shooting a pistol. The update is partly themed around the Rio Olympics, and features a series of medals, boxing gloves, fencers and a goal net. (There's also a juggler, perplexingly, despite the fact that juggling is not an Olympic sport.) The rifle was meant to symbolise competitive shooting, while the man shooting a pistol appears in an image of the "modern pentathalon". Here are the proposed glyphs: However, Unicode has confirmed that neither will appear in the official release, though were cancelled so late that they have already been coded as unicode – they will be available as the black images on the far left of the image above, but will not be coded into coloured emoji by any of the tech giants. A statement on the Emojipedia website notes that both have been "bumped" and are "no longer coming to an emoji keyboard near you". The rifle emoji in particular has been controversial since it was first suggested. A British gun control group spoke out against the gun’s inclusion to the BBC last October, saying: "It would be familiarising and popularising the image of a weapon which is not a good idea. " It’s hard to know where tech companies’ concerns were rooted (all the Unicode voting members were contacted by BuzFeed but did not respond) but according to a source who was at the discussions, no one objected to the emojis’ removal when it was raised by Apple and then Microsoft. While some may link the apparently anti-gun move to recent gun-related deaths in Orlando and Yorkshire, Apple reportedly raised its first objections at the April 2015 Unicode quarterly meeting. It's also worth noting that there is already a handgun, knife, and bomb emoji, and the source who spoke to BuzzFeed implied that the prior existence of a gun emoji was one reason why no members objected to the rifle's cancellation. Several young people have been arrested in the US for threatening use of the gun emoji online, and as Time magazine noted in February : "Cops are taking postings of gun emojis as legitimate threats. " As such, it's clear emoji aren't so divorced from real life, or even crime, as we'd like to think – but any real anti-gun move from Unicode would surely involve removing its arsenal of weapons altogether, rather than simply refusing to expand it. Autism – a developmental disorder that causes impediments to social interactions and behaviour – is usually linked by scientists to abnormalities in brain structure and function, caused by a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Scientists have almost always attempted to understand the way autistic people process the world around them by looking to the mind. According to the National Autistic Society , “There is strong evidence to suggest that autism can be caused by a variety of physical factors, all of which affect brain development; it is not due to emotional deprivation or the way a person has been brought up.” Recently, however, a lesser-known link to autism has gained traction. This time, the link is not found in the brain but in the gut. Reporting their findings in the journal Cell , researchers from the Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, found that the presence of a single species of gut bacteria in mice could reverse many behavioural characteristics related to autism. In the digestive tracts of humans and other animals, there exists a complex, symbiotically integrated network of trillions of microorganisms known as the “gut flora” or “microflora”. The idea that all these bacteria and microorganisms have taken up a home in our gut may initially seem startling, but they serve a number of beneficial purposes, such as aiding digestion and offering immunity from infection. The potential link between gut flora and autism arose as researchers identified the increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism, among children born from mothers who were obese during pregnancy. The microflora of obese people is demonstrably different from those who are not obese, and as a result, connections have been made to the gut issues often reported in autistic people. The senior author of the study and neuroscientist Mauro Costa-Mattioli said : “Other research groups are trying to use drugs or electrical brain stimulation as a way to reverse some of the behavioural symptoms associated with neurodevelopmental disorders – but here we have, perhaps, a new approach.” To determine what the differences in gut bacteria were, the researchers fed 60 female mice a high-fat diet, with the aim of replicating the type of gut flora that would be found among people consuming a high-fat diet which would contribute to obesity. A control group of mice was fed a normal diet to serve as comparison. The mice in each group then mated, and their eventual offspring then spent three weeks with their mothers while being observed to see how behaviour and microflora was affected. It was found that the offspring from the mice laden with high-fat foods exhibited social impairments, including very little engagement with peers. Meanwhile, a test called ribosomal RNA gene sequencing found that the offspring of the mice that were fed a high-fat diet housed a very different bacterial gut environment to the offspring of mice fed a normal diet. Discussing the result, co-author Shelly Buffington was keen to stress just how significant the findings were: “By looking at the microbiome of an individual mouse we could predict whether its behaviour would be impaired.” In an effort to understand whether the variation in microbiome was the reason for differences in social behaviour, the researchers paired up control group mice with high-fat diet mice. Peculiarly, mice eat each other’s faeces, which is why researchers kept them together for four weeks. The high-fat diet mice would eat the faeces of the normal mice and gain any microflora they held. Astonishingly, the high-fat diet mice showed improvements in behaviour and changes to the microbiome, hinting that there may be a species of bacteria making all the difference. After careful examination using a technique called whole-genome shotgun sequencing , it was found that one type of bacteria – Lactobacillus reuteri – was far less prevalent in the offspring of high-fat diet mice than the offspring of normal-diet mice. Discussing the method and finding, Buffington said: “We culture a strain of Lactobacillus reuteri originally isolated from human breast milk and introduced it into the water of the high-fat diet offspring. We found that treatment with this single bacterial strain was able to rescue their social behaviour.” What the Lactobacillus reuteri seemed to be doing was increasing production of oxytocin , a hormone which is known by various other names such as the “trust hormone”, or the “love hormone”, because of its role in social interactions. The results of the experiment showing that Lactobacillus reuteri can influence social behaviour are profound findings. Though the work would need to be transferred from mice studies to full human clinical trials to see if this could be applied to autistic people, the impact of adding Lactobacillus reuteri to the gut flora of mice can’t be underestimated. It seems then, for now, that research will go with the gut.

Kyle Lafferty backs Northern Ireland to hold their own in knockout stages Kyle Lafferty claims Northern Ireland have one of Euro 2016's best defences and believes they will be a tough opponent in the knockout stages. Michael O'Neill's men booked a last-16 meeting with hosts France or neighbours Wales after keeping a rampant Germany to a 1-0 win at Parc des Princes, enough to progress in third place with three points. That was made possible by their neutral goal difference, having scored two and conceded two in a tough group containing Ukraine and Poland as well as the world champions. Much of Northern Ireland's squad is sourced from the Championship or Scotland, but their back four contains Premier League regulars Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley and Craig Cathcart as well as 102-cap veteran Aaron Hughes, whose former clubs include Newcastle, Fulham and Aston Villa. Behind them is goalkeeper Michael McGovern, who turned in a career-best performance to repeatedly deny Germany on Tuesday, and Lafferty is confident that can be the basis of an underdog success story. "We've probably got one of the best defences in the tournament," said Lafferty. "We've come up against world-class players and kept them relatively quiet. We've only conceded two goals in three games which isn't bad considering the players we've been up against. "No matter who we come up against we'll fancy our chances. It's a one-off game now and I'm sure we'll go into it thinking we can get a victory. "We kept going until the 93rd minute against Germany because we knew 1-0 wasn't a bad result and it had a massive say in our goal difference. "To leave with that result is something we can take a lot of positives from. " Lafferty was superb for Northern Ireland in qualification, scoring seven goals in nine appearances to guide them to a first ever European Championship and end a tournament drought stretching 30 years. But he was dropped after the 1-0 defeat to Poland in favour of QPR's Conor Washington and played no part in the historic 2-0 win over Ukraine. Now the 28-year-old is hoping he has a role to play in the remainder of the competition. "When I was given a chance to come on I just wanted to do enough to put a doubt in Michael O'Neill's head," he said. "I wanted to show I'm still hungry, I still want to play and I've still got a goal in me. I didn't get a chance but that had a lot to do with the team we were up against. "Whoever we get in the next stage we'll need to put our strongest XI on the pitch and hopefully I'll be in it. "

81 AP Analysis: NKorea missile success followed flurry of flops SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea endured international humiliation with five failed launches in about two months before it finally pulled off what appears to be a successful test of a powerful new midrange missile. Scientists managed to satisfy a direct order from an impatient strongman looking for a credible military backup to his repeated threats to strike his enemies in all corners of Asia. The latest development came Wednesday, with back-to-back launches of what Seoul, Tokyo and Washington believe are Musudan missiles, the second of which appeared to succeed. The North's remarkable commitment to quickly launching the missiles, despite the failures, flies in the face of past practices, when scientists usually took their time after a bad launch to figure out what went wrong and make adjustments. But leader Kim Jong Un may have turned up the pressure on his scientists and military with his very public order in March to push ahead with more nuclear and missile tests. Such a burden from a boss who has shown a willingness to use violence against his underlings — ordering even his own uncle's execution — may toss normal scientific patience out the window. Kim leads a small, impoverished, authoritarian country that sees itself beset with much larger enemies intent on its destruction. To protect his third-generation family dynasty, he may calculate that he needs to make North Korea appear too dangerous for Washington to try to topple him. He may have been willing to weather outside mockery for progress on a missile whose development marks a big step toward North Korea's goal of a comprehensive nuclear and missile program that can deliver atomic bombs and missile strikes to U. S. targets around the world, including, eventually, the U. S. mainland. Five of the North's six suspected Musudan launches failed, many exploding in midair or crashing. The sixth on Wednesday flew about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) high and a distance of about 400 kilometers (245 miles), South Korean and Japanese officials said. That indicated a success for some observers. The North's repeated tests of the Musudan worry Washington because the missile's potential 3,500-kilometer (2,180-mile) range puts a lot of Asia and the Pacific, including U. S. military bases, within reach. Some analysts have been thrown by the speed with which North Korea moved on the suspected Musudan tests. The first launch came on April 15, and was linked by outsiders both to Kim's March order and to the birthday anniversary that day of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Un's grandfather. Less than two weeks later, North Korea conducted two more launches. The next came June 1, and then came Wednesday's double firing. "Repeating a failed test again and again with no more than a month for analysis and troubleshooting will almost guarantee repeated failure," according to aerospace engineer John Schilling, writing earlier this month, after the fourth test. North Korea is extremely sensitive to outside criticism. Pyongyang, for instance, said Monday it won't negotiate to release arrested American citizens if a former U. S. detainee, Kenneth Bae, doesn't stop using what it called slanderous language about the North. But even more important for the leadership is the support of the elite in Pyongyang, the North's capital. North Korea said nothing in any of its state-run media about the launches, meaning most people in insular North Korea probably knew nothing about the duds. For Kim Jong Un, a final, apparently successful launch of a missile that could be a real threat to his enemies may ease the pain of all the previous failures, especially since most of his people were unaware of them. ___ Foster Klug, AP's bureau chief in Seoul, has covered North and South Korea for more than a decade. 82 French football chief blames clubs for state of pitches as he blasts Lille 'a failure' French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet told the country's top clubs on Wednesday to make the quality of their pitches an absolute priority, describing one ground at Euro 2016 as 'a failure'. UEFA has said it is unhappy about the state of pitches, in particular in Marseille, Lille and Saint Denis where the showcase Stade de France is located. It appeared to point the finger at stadium owners and clubs. 'I would like to tell our clubs that having nice pitches has to be their absolute priority,' Le Graet told a news conference at France's training camp outside Paris. 'The quality of our pitches has to be better. We have great infrastructures but some of our pitches are not adapted to top- level football.' UEFA had asked for pitches in Nice, Marseille and Lille to be replaced, the FFF president said. 'For Nice, it worked. For Marseille, it was more complicated but we have indications that it will be better for the matches to come. As for Lille, it is a failure,' he said. 'Who's to blame? UEFA, the clubs? I think it's time to tell the clubs something needs to be done about this.' Almost halfway through the month-long, 24-team tournament, the demands on pitches have never been greater at a European Championship. Some stadia are hosting six games and wet weather across France is visibly having an impact. With the exception of the Parc des Princes in Paris and Lens's Bollaert stadium, which are football- only venues, stadiums in the tournament have multiple uses as owners maximise commercial activity. A French grass association accused UEFA of 'scandalously' trying to pass the buck over the state of playing surfaces, laying the blame firmly on the governing body. UEFA responded by saying it was entirely satisfied with the work done by its pitch consultant Richard Hayden.

Defiant Gemma Collins reveals she's staying plus-sized She has a hugely successful plus-sized clothing empire and she champions curvy women - and defiant Gemma Collins reveals she's not bowing down to pressure to lose weight. The stunning blonde, 35, attended a panel discussion hosted by Katie Hopkins for MailOnline at Cannes Lions on Wednesday where she talked about being body confident. 'They all want to make you thinner when you go on reality television,' she said. 'Everyone wants me to lose 10stone and get a gastric band but I never said I was a model. I'm just a real girl doing her thing and I'm proud that I am a natural girl.' Katie quizzed the former TOWIE star on that famous designer vagina that Gemma had on the show. She had the £2000 procedure last year but she said she didn't actually need to get it done. 'It didn't need cutting or trimming,' she told the wide-eyed panel. 'It's just one of those things you do for television. They did something with a UV light, that's all.' Gemma and Katie were joined by The Voice UK winner Kevin Simm, reality star Charlotte Crosby, internet sensation The Fat Jew, Kim Kardashian's best friend Jonathan Cheban and mixologist JJ Goodman. The ex-girlfriend of James Argent looked incredible in a Pucci-inspired silk dress which she teamed with a pair of vertiginous red strappy high heels. Her hair was blow-dried to perfection and she sported the perfect matching manicure and pedicure in a nude shade. Keen to dissolve the notion that reality stars can be famous for doing nothing, Gemma said that is certainly NOT the case for her. 'A reality show can give you a platform and it's down to you to make something out of it,' she said. 'I am up at 4am reading emails and I work with a team of 30 people. But it doesn't happen without me driving it. 'I was offered deals but I was determined to do it on my own. My fashion line has been going for four and a half years and it's still going but it is stressful. 'If I wasn't famous, I would be selling clothes on a market. I love it.'

Robin McBryde backs Wales to step up to New Zealand challenge despite injuries Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde does not think the loss of two of his leading front five forwards will dent his side's chances of ending their tour of New Zealand on a high in Dunedin on Saturday. Gethin Jenkins, who hoisted his Welsh cap record to 126 by starting in the first two tests, and Bradley Davies, the 56-time capped lock, both flew home this week after sustaining injuries in last weekend's 36-22 defeat in Wellington. Joining them on the return flight was Cardiff Blues back row man Josh Turnbull, who aggravated a long-standing shoulder problem in the midweek defeat to the Chiefs. Rob Evans is set to return to the loose head prop position vacated by Jenkins, while Jake Ball will take over as the second row replacement for Davies on the bench. "We have got a fit and healthy squad, but we haven't got any room for any further injuries. We are pretty tight and the individuals who have been there or thereabouts throughout the tour are ready to step up," said McBryde. "Gethin has been digging in, Bradley has been carrying his knee for a while and it is a similar situation with Josh with his shoulder. But now we are just excited to see how the other boys go. "It is about building up for the last game, our last opportunity against the All Blacks. We have been exposed to them twice now and when you get that bit of familiarity it gives you greater confidence. "We want to embrace this final test and give a good account of ourselves. It's important we finish this tour well. "I'm sure the All Blacks will be looking to ramp it up against us. Our performance was excellent again in the first half last weekend in Wellington, but we know it is going to have to be better over the course of the whole game on Saturday. " Wales scored three tries against the world champions in Wellington in the second Test, only the third time in 111 years they had done so, and the 14-point losing margin was the best they have achieved in New Zealand. And McBryde says the team will stick with their new high-tempo game plan that has managed to stretch Kieran Read's team on numerous occasions in the first two Tests. "We've been pretty bold and the players have said they want to move on and evolve our game - it's good to see them embracing it. We are willing to change and to try different things," said McBryde. "You saw that in the last game. Not everything came off, but we are trying and there has been quite a bit of evolution in our game. "We are evolving, but not forgetting what has worked for us in the past. The fact we managed to finish strongly in the last Test was good and we now need to build in greater accuracy. "There are certain aspects we have been disappointed with, but when you fear change too much you become paralysed. We are changing things because of what has happened in the past. "Our target is to produce a game which will challenge them. Hopefully, we can tighten up the areas which have cost us and make this Saturday as entertaining as the first two Tests. " Wales are due to announce their team for the third Test at 7am local time on Thursday.

Smoking breaks cost Britain £5 BILLION year in lost productivity: Average worker loses 28 minutes a day to the habit - so should they be paid less? We've all worked in places where colleagues have sloped off for a cigarette in the throws of a busy working day. But while those who smoke might argue the nicotine fix is a necessity to function properly, many non- smokers find the regular 'extra' breaks annoying. The health costs of smoking are well documented - it is the number one cause of preventable death in the world and drastically reduces life expectancy. And with packets now costing an average £9 for 20, it's well-known that sparking up doesn't come cheap. But the cost of smoking does not stop there - with estimates that cigarette breaks cost UK businesses on average £5 billion a year in lost productivity. Now, a series of graphics claim men and women here smoke an average 123.5 million cigarettes a day. Created by e-cigarette manufacturer vapeclub - which clearly has a vested interest in the issue - the graphics make for alarming or infuriating reading, depending on your smoking status. With the average cigarette taking about seven minutes to smoke, and smokers taking an average of four cigarette breaks a day, this equates to 865 million minutes a day lost to puffing on a cigarette, they claim. It cites research from the British Heart Foundation which says smoking employees cost a business £1,815 a year, once break times and illness from smoking is factored in. Figures from the Office for National Statistics looking at the smoking habits and working habits of 300,000 Britons, found smokers take more sick days than the average employees. Sick days from smoking related illnesses - such as most cancers and respiratory problems - are predicted to cost £979 million in sick days. And despite figures showing up to half of smokers will be killed by their habit, the number of cigarettes smoked by men and women in the UK would cover the distance to the moon and back in just three months.

Pep Guardiola has pored over DVDs, made secret trips to the training ground and immersed himself in Manchester City history... so what has he already changed? Pep Guardiola’s first day in the saddle at Manchester City will take on the same excitement as with Bayern Munich three years ago. He will be officially presented to those Cityzen members lucky enough to clinch a ticket at his unveiling behind the scenes at the City Football Academy on July 3. Guardiola will address the fans, smile for the camera; he will appear calm on the surface while the enthusiasm flurries into overdrive inside. The giddy anticipation of his arrival by supporters will be matched by the man whose job it is to deliver a Premier League title and further progression in Europe. He has, after all, been planning for this moment since Manuel Pellegrini and City announced the sweeping changes back in February designed at elevating the club higher than ever before. He has pored over DVDs of matches at the back end of the season, deciphering who he wants to form his core next year and what will be tinkered with to make sure they top the lot. He has his targets, too. One - midfielder Ilkay Gundogan - is already signed, sealed and delivered from Borussia Dortmund for £21million. More will follow in the coming weeks. Gundogan’s team-mate, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, was a name Guardiola informed sporting director Txiki Begiristain to pursue early, interest first revealed by Sportsmail. It remains to be seen whether City will agree to Dortmund’s lofty price demands for the striker. But regardless of new faces, Guardiola is already well set. He made a couple of secret trips to the club’s plush training base last month, meeting various senior chiefs along the way, and communicating how he plans to implement the evolution of the club. What also has City enthused is his desire to immerse himself in the club’s history, spending hours studying their past. He will doubtless have seen Paul Dickov’s 95th-minute equaliser in the 1999 Second Division play-off final at Wembley, plus the wild celebrations of goalkeeper Nicky Weaver to follow. As at Bayern, the Spaniard wants to engage with what he is driving. That extends to where he resides in Manchester, with Guardiola thought to be looking for a home in the city centre rather than the leafy lanes of Prestbury in Cheshire, joined by his long-term partner Cristina Serra and three children. The new manager’s preparation should see him settle quickly, helped by his family moving over but so too his backroom team from Munich. Personal assistant Manuel Estiarte, assistant coach Domenec Torrent, fitness coach Lorenzo Buenaventura and video analyst Carles Planchart are all arriving alongside their boss in a move bringing stability for Guardiola, while also adding Mikel Arteta after his deal at Arsenal runs down. Interestingly, it is Estiarte who should offer him the most comfort in a new country and league. Guardiola laid his admiration for the ex-water polo star bare in the book Pep Confidential. ‘Coaching is a lonely job and that’s why I value loyalty above all else,’ he said. ‘Manuel helps me enormously. When I’m going through a difficult period, maybe even struggling with self-doubt, he is there for me. ‘Manuel has an unerring instinct. He knows immediately if things are going well or not. He is quick to sense the slightest change in atmosphere.’ Estiarte, for example, was known to occasionally insist Guardiola left Bayern’s training ground in the middle of a day to go and recharge. He operates in a manner whereby there is nothing left to give and that is what City are buying into. They and Guardiola both know additional players are needed too, however. Along with Gundogan, City hope to have Celta Vigo’s Nolito wrapped up quickly - a player who has already spent time under Guardiola at Barcelona. There is also interest in Everton central defender John Stones, a key target given Aymeric Laporte’s decision to pen a new contract at Athletic Bilbao. Leroy Sane of Schalke has also been watched, while Guardiola quickly ruled out a move for Paul Pogba, who appears destined for Real Madrid if he does leave Juventus in the coming weeks. At £58m, Aubameyang would be a significant statement of intent and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak revealed earlier this month he expects the summer to be busy - both in and out. ‘Pep has a particular way he wants to manage the squad and a particular way he wants to play,’ he told City’s official website. ‘I think we will need particular players who will join the team that fit and will be moulded to the way he would like this team to play. ‘There will also be some players [for whom] the time is right to move on. I think we will have some changes this summer. We will invest as we have always done in this club, in this team. ‘We will provide the necessary resources for Pep to build a team that has the ambition and capability to go and win back this Premier League for us, to go as far as we can and try and win the Champions League and keep pushing at the cups.’ Pablo Zabaleta is one who looks likely to end his eight-year association with the club and is in talks with Inter Milan. City would not stand in his way if the popular right back felt he needed more game time at 31, while Guardiola has explored the possibility of Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin to provide competition for Bacary Sagna. Jesus Navas seems ready to stay for the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, while Yaya Toure and Eliaquim Mangala could both remain as well. Guardiola has his plans in place and will have an idea of how the squad will take shape when he steps up to say hello to the hundreds of fans expectantly waiting for him a week on Sunday.

Australian Olympic Team want extra security for Rio Olympics after Liesl Tesch was mugged Authorities are calling for an immediate security upgrade for athletes at the Rio Olympics after a gold medal- winning Paralympian was robbed at gunpoint. Six-time Paralympic sailor Liesl Tesch, 47, and team official Sarah Ross were threatened with a gun by two men while riding their bikes in a park near their hotel in Rio de Janeiro. The two were confronted by the men who stole their bicycles on Sunday morning as Australian Sailing confirmed the pair were 'unharmed, but understandably shaken'. Australian Olympic Team Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller has called for 'extra security precautions as soon as possible before an athlete gets hurt'. 'The Paralympic sailors were confronted by the men in broad daylight, it was 7.30 in the morning, and right near their accommodation,' Ms Chiller said in a statement. 'There were people around but no-one came to their assistance. This is a major concern and the only answer is for the authorities to put extra police and security on the ground now. 'We have a duty of care to the athletes and officials. We are taking over 400 young athletes to the Games, we need to ensure they are protected at all costs.' The RIO Organising Committee has promised to mobilise a security force of 100,000 police, military and other personnel in time for the Olympic Games which begin on August 5. This comes after the Australians' bikes were the only items stolen and the pair were involved in racing at the Paralympic sailing venue later in the day. 'We were returning from a morning ride when the incident took place, said Tesch in the statement. 'We were close to our hotel when we were confronted by two men, one of whom was armed. 'I was threatened with the pistol and pushed to the ground. He took my bike, and the other perpetrator took Sarah's bike. We are both shaken, but physically were both OK.' Australian Sailing said the incident was reported to the local tourist police who are 'offering ongoing assistance to the team and will continue to investigate'. 'The safety of our team members is paramount,' said Matt Carroll, CEO of Australian Sailing. 'We will continue to work with the Australian Paralympic Committee and Australian Federal Police to ensure our team has an appropriate level of security to ensure their safety in the lead-up to, and during, both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. 'In the meantime we will continue to ensure our team currently in Rio has the support they need. Kate McLoughlin, chef de mission of the Australian Paralympic team, said the advice from the AFP was to 'always exercise a high degree of caution while travelling in Rio'. 'That advice is particularly important before the Paralympic Games period,' she said. 'We know there will be a hugely elevated level of security in place during the Paralympic Games, but for athletes and teams travelling there before the Games, there is a heightened need to be security conscious.' Investigations into the incident are ongoing. Last month two Spanish sailors and an official were robbed at gunpoint in a popular tourist area of the city as they headed out for breakfast. In December 2014, two female British Olympic sailors were mugged at knifepoint in Rio as they returned to their hotel from a training session.

Jade Jones relishing Rio 2016 challenge after being named in taekwondo squad Jade Jones is relishing the chance to defend her Olympic title after being officially selected in Great Britain's four-strong taekwondo squad for the Rio Games. Jones, who won a stunning gold medal at the age of 19 in London, will start as one of the favourites in the women's -57kg category after an impressive run of form in the qualification process. She will be joined in Rio by London 2012 bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad, reigning world champion Bianca Walkden, and heavyweight Mahama Cho. Jones said: "It's a great honour to be picked for Great Britain at Rio 2016 and it gives me a real sense of pride. "Overall my preparation for the Games is going really well and things are coming together at the right time. "I'm going to Rio for gold and I'll be leaving everything on the mat so that I can come out of the ring and know I have given it my all. " The selection of Muhammad comes without the controversy which greeted his selection over the then world number one Aaron Cook four years ago. Cook subsequently left the Great Britain programme and opted to represent Moldova, and he has qualified for the Games this summer. Muhammad edged men's -80kg rival Damon Sansum to earn the slot this time round, overcoming injury to win the World Grand Prix finals in Mexico at the end of last year. Muhammad said: "My road to Rio has been quite challenging as I have had a few injuries along the way. But I am now at a stage where I can focus on doing what I do best. "

EU Great Debate: Haggis, memes, drinking games and Kraftwerk The BBC monitored some of the themes capturing the public's imagination on social media during the biggest live debate of the UK's EU referendum campaign at London's Wembley Arena. The BBC's Great Debate prompted up to 150,000 viewers to use the #bbcdebate hashtag during the final chance for voters to hear the two sides' arguments on primetime TV before going to the polls on Thursday. Two of the other most popular hashtags on the night were #projectfear , with 10,000 tweets throughout the debate, and #takebackcontrol with almost 5,000 tweets. The "take back control" slogan - which was used widely by the Leave campaign but was also adopted by some Remain supporters - prompted some imaginative memes and gifs. One tweeter wanted more facts, but other random themes and moments - including the Leave campaign's Boris Johnson's reference to Haggis exports being hampered by EU membership - were picked up by the social media audience. Others turned to drinking games, reacting to some of the slogans on both sides of the debate. In an increasingly lively debate, people on social media reacted to the participation of the audience of 6,000 at Wembley Arena. Viewers also reacted with a mixed response to the jostling between current and former London mayors Sadiq Khan - from the Remain campaign - and Mr Johnson - from the Leave campaign. And tweeters were quick to comment on debate moderator David Dimbleby. For one tweeter, Marcus Payne , the whole thing resembled a German synth-pop gig at the famed music venue. 94 US election: How safe are presidential candidates? There is renewed focus on US presidential candidates' security after a British man was reported to have tried to grab a US police officer's gun to shoot Donald Trump. The charge he faces - committing an act of violence in a restricted area - relates specifically to breaches of an area where someone protected by the Secret Service is visiting, Here, we look at the threats candidates face and their security response. Modern-day levels of presidential protection began in 1963 after John Kennedy's assassination in Dallas. That prompted a major review of security methods. The protection of presidential candidates was authorised after Robert Kennedy, who was running for president, was assassinated in 1968. The US government says such protection is designed to maintain the integrity of the democratic process and continuity of government. In 1972, former Alabama governor George Wallace - who campaigned for racial segregation - was shot in Maryland while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination. The gunman, Arthur Bremer, had originally planned to shoot then president Richard Nixon but was put off by the president's security detail. Mr Wallace was left paralysed from the waist down and a secret service officer was also wounded. In 1979, Edward Kennedy - younger brother of President John Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy, who were both assassinated in the 1960s - was the target of a plot by a woman with mental health problems, Suzanne Osgood, who was arrested outside Mr Kennedy's Senate office with a hunting knife. In addition, plots have been reported against the lives of every US president since Richard Nixon, who took office in 1969. The US presidential election campaign of 2016 has been fringed with violence. Almost everywhere Donald Trump goes he attracts protests. The tycoon often mocks the demonstrators and there have been clashes with his supporters, both inside and outside of his packed, emotionally charged rallies. For some, the violence has stirred dark memories of 1968 when Democratic presidential contender Robert Kennedy was assassinated and riots broke out at the party's convention in Chicago. This year events have not descended to those awful depths but still, the country feels edgy and the Secret Service, which guards candidates as well as presidents, has been on high alert. In March in Ohio agents swarmed around Mr Trump after a man apparently attempted to climb on to the stage where he was speaking. Other events have been cancelled because of security concerns. With five months to go, many Americans are worried about where this election is heading. Presidential candidates get Secret Service protection when they become a major-party nominee or beforehand - if they request it or there appears to be a credible threat. This time around, Donald Trump and Ben Carson got protection on the Republican side and Hillary Clinton, who always had it as a presidential spouse, and Bernie Sanders received it on the Democratic side. They are protected by special agents on temporary assignment from field offices. However, while protection for the president and vice-president is mandatory, others can decline it if they choose. Measures include securing a location ahead of time and sweeping it with bomb-sniffing dogs, setting up metal detector checkpoints for crowds entering the venue, police-protected motorcades when the candidate travels and 24-hour bodyguards. The Secret Service says its security operations "deter, minimise and decisively respond to identified threats and vulnerabilities" and draw on specialised resources including airspace security, snipers, counter surveillance and hazardous chemical teams. However Secret Service agents do not get involved in preventing or dispersing protests unless there is a genuine threat to the candidate, security experts say. I was staying down the hall from Mr Trump's hotel room in New Hampshire and there was always an agent outside his door. Whenever he was in the room someone stopped me at the elevator to check my name on the hotel's registry. Beyond the on-site security, the Secret Service also conducts background checks of people near the candidates and investigates any reports of threats against a protected politician's life. Write a letter or make a social media post saying you're going to kill the president, and chances are men in dark suits are going to be knocking on your door soon. Mr Trump has created a privately funded security and intelligence force with a larger remit than the security operations in other campaigns, an investigation by Politico found. Its duties include finding and ejecting protesters, patrolling campaign events as well as supplementing Secret Service protection for Mr Trump, Politico reported. Private security firm XMark says on its website that it provided personal security for Mr Trump across the US until last November, when it was relieved by the Secret Service. Some protesters say they were assaulted by Mr Trump's security team in New York last September. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton relies on the Secret Service for security and has paid local police departments and security firms to patrol her events, Politico reported. 2016-06-22 13:51 BBC News www.bbc.co.uk

Glastonbury festival-goers warned of traffic chaos Glastonbury festival-goers have been stuck in queues of up to 12 hours as traffic chaos hits all major routes to the site. Organisers said rain and ground conditions had caused delays and urged people "not to set off". Festival founder Michael Eavis apologised and said: "We did ask people to come in later. " More than 100,000 people are due to descend on Worthy Farm for the event. Glastonbury gridlock: Latest updates The gates officially opened at 08:00 BST but people have reported queuing for more than seven hours to get on to the site. One ticket-holder told the BBC he had been in the queue for "about four and a half hours" and only moved half a mile. "We're trying to get in the campervan field but we're glad we've come today because we think it's going to be even worse tomorrow," he said. Glastonbury live album to be dedicated to Jo Cox MP Glastonbury 2016: Eleven acts to watch Glastonbury weather - latest BBC forecast Others took to social media to vent their frustrations, Angela Gibbon tweeted: "7 hours in the queue now...so near yet so far away! ". Emily Dyson said: "Stuck in #glastonburytraffic - been still for over an hour. ". Steve Saunders posted a shot of the roadside saying: "This is a view of a hedge we've had for a hour. It's a beaut! " while Patrick Dear tweeted: "Talking about necessary survival plans now - which of us to eat first. " Mike Ross said he had "never been on a roundabout long enough to take a nap before" and Moira tweeted that she had "been in this traffic for 12 hours, that's longer than any of my relationships". Tim Powell said: "@astro_timpeake got to the international space station more quickly than it looks like I'll get to Glasto today. " Mr Eavis said he was "sorry for the delay" but the problem was because "people were coming before the gates were open". "We did ask people to postpone their trip by about six or seven hours but instead of that - funnily enough - more people have come early this time," he said. "I don't mind them coming early but they're going to have to wait because we don't have the staff or the car parks until 8 o'clock in the morning. " Festival organisers have advised people "not to set off" yet or "grab some essentials" if they are on the road as they may have a long wait in their vehicle. A temporary campervan and caravan holding site has also been set up at the Bath and West show ground near Shepton Mallet and festival-goers are being advised to go there. Meanwhile, due to "high traffic" the official festival website has been replaced with a black holding page linking to the festival's Twitter account. Avon and Somerset Police said traffic was queuing on the A37, north and south of the A361 junctions, with further congestion around the A303. The force has advised people to avoid the area "unless absolutely necessary". Residents have described the gridlocked roads as a "traffic disaster". Nigel White, said the A39 through Ashcott was "virtually at a standstill" while Judith Templeman said "no other event would be allowed to cause this level of mayhem". "If they can't handle the influx of people in an efficient way so as not to cause this level of disruption on all the access routes around Shepton Mallet... then it should be stopped or limited to the number that can be processed efficiently," she added. Frome MP David Warburton tweeted it had "not been so bad for years" and he would be writing to Mr Eavis as this was "not good for Somerset". The Met Office posted a weather update on its Twitter account, saying: "Further outbreaks of #rain over #Glastonbury this morning, adding to the already very wet ground conditions. " Pictures emerged on Monday showing flooding at the Somerset site, with paths under water and camping areas already turned into mudbaths. The music starts on Friday, with Muse, Adele and Coldplay all headlining the main Pyramid stage over the weekend. 97 In pictures: Barnardo's ball boys remembered This year, the charity Barnardo’s is commemorating its 150th anniversary and 70 years since its partnership with Wimbledon, when, between 1946 and 1966, it provided all the ball boys for the tournament. Images in the Barnardo's archive show the ball boys at Golding’s school in Hertfordshire before the championships in 1956. The charity was established by Thomas Barnardo to care for destitute boys, opening its first care home, in Stepney Causeway, in 1870. Barnardo later opened the Girls' Village Home, in Barkingside. At Golding’s school, the boys learnt how to operate at various points around the tennis court. Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said: "Being ‘ball boys’ for 20 years was an opportunity for some Barnardo’s students to be part of something truly special and inspirational, and as we mark our 150th anniversary, it’s wonderful to recognise the positive impact both Wimbledon and the support from our charity has had on their lives. " "From Barnardo’s beginnings to the present day, we continue to provide care, support and training to hundreds of thousands of children, young people and families every year," added Mr Khan. Retrieving balls from the net and then making their way off court as quickly as possible to allow play to resume. They were also trained how to deliver the tennis ball to the player about to serve. In 1956, it was just boys, with girls having to wait until 1977 before they were introduced at Wimbledon. Those long hot British summers meant that the boys were also called on to serve the player's barley water. For the 1957 final, the boys lined up to meet the Duchess of Kent. A highlight was the chance to meet the stars of the time. Here, the boys are seen with US players John and Beverley Fleitz. 98 Euro 2016: Italy and Ireland memories recalled ahead of game in Lille When the Republic of Ireland and Italy clash at football, passion and pride are usually not far away. Ray Houghton's tumbling goal celebration at the 1994 World Cup and Salvatore Schillaci's whoops of delight after scoring in the same fixture four years earlier are snapshots of the fervour on display. Angelo Fusco, 81, has been a keen observer of Italy's games against the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland for decades, and can boast connections linking all three. He was brought up in Belfast, educated in Dublin, and his father had strong links with the Comino Valley. "I always supported Italy in football and Ireland in rugby as I went to school in Dublin at Blackrock," he said. "Italy comes just a wee bit above the Irish, my mother was Irish and my dad was Italian. "My brother, Carlo, supported Inter Milan and the other three brothers, myself included, supported AC Milan. "I remember in 1990 when Italy won against Ireland at the World Cup, someone threw a brick through the window of a brother's shop in Belfast. "My favourite Italian players have been Cesare Maldini and his son Paolo. I saw Cesare play for AC Milan in the 1963 European Cup final in London against Benfica, I went over to the match with my brothers. "I also went to the Rome derby once between AS Roma and Lazio - I don't know all the Italian curses, but there was a lot of swearing around me. "My brother Carlo played for Distillery, Cliftonville and Portadown in the Irish League. "At Portadown he was a teammate of Wilbur Cush who went on to play at the 1958 World Cup for Northern Ireland. " Angelo and his brothers witnessed the infamous 'Battle of Belfast' in December 1957, when Northern Ireland and Italy drew 2-2 in an explosive encounter at Windsor Park. Juan Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia, who scored Uruguay's winning goal in the 1950 World Cup final before becoming a naturalised Italian, both featured in the game. It was invalidated as a World Cup qualifier after the Hungarian referee Istvan Zolt's flight was held up by fog, but its new designation as a "friendly" did not stop tempers boiling on and off the pitch. "We all, as brothers, went to the game against Northern Ireland in Belfast in 1957, we were all there supporting Italy and it was a shambles," Angelo said. "It was supposed to be a World Cup match, but the referee did not turn up. "In those days, the goalkeeper in Italy was sacrosanct and was not to be touched. Northern Ireland forward Peter McParland tackled the goalkeeper and took him out, the match turned on that. "When the fans invaded the pitch after the match, they got one of the full- backs on the ground, Harry Gregg and some of the other Northern Ireland players got round him and shielded him. " Angelo also recalled how both sets of players met up at a dance hall venue in north Belfast after the game. "There was a big do at the Floral Hall at Bellevue, which was attended by players from the Italian and Northern Ireland teams," he added. "We as brothers sold tickets for the dance that night. The Northern Ireland players that were there included Peter McParland, Danny and Jackie Blanchflower and Wilbur Cush. "The Italian players that were there included Juan Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia "The match was rough, but when it is over, it is over and the players move on. " Paul Loughran is one of 24 fans from the West Belfast Ireland Supporters Club who will be travelling to the Euro 2016 finals. He said a number of them would be attending the Italy v Republic of Ireland game on 22 June near Lille and highlighted the history that linked the two teams. "It is always a good match, there is always a lot of excitement and tension for both sets of supporters and across the generations," he said. "Ireland had Giovanni Trapattoni as manager, he was born on St Patrick's Day so that was his Irish connection, he also had Marco Tardelli who was Italian, as his assistant. "Liam Brady was a big player for Ireland and he also played for Juventus in Italy and Trapattoni managed him there. " Angelo, meanwhile, is just happy to soak up the occasion, whatever the result. "It is great that that the three of them are there, (Italy, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) - it doesn't happen very often. "

Ellie Butler: Granddad of murdered girl in public inquiry plea The grandfather of murdered six-year-old Ellie Butler has called for a public inquiry into why she was returned to the care of her parents. Neal Gray told BBC Radio 4 that his granddaughter was "petrified" of being returned to Ben Butler and Jennie Gray. He said he and his wife "fought tooth and nail" to keep Ellie but were seen as "troublemakers". Mr Gray said he had disowned his daughter, adding: "Everybody failed Ellie completely and utterly. " More on this story and other news from London The youngster went back to live with her parents 11 months before her death. Butler, 36, was convicted of her murder on Tuesday and jailed for a minimum of 23 years. Ellie's mother (Mr Gray's daughter) was found guilty of child cruelty but had admitted perverting the course of justice. She was jailed for 42 months. The exonerated father who went on to kill Butler was convicted in 2009 for shaking Ellie as a baby, although this was later quashed on appeal. The couple then won a High Court judgement to have Ellie returned to their care in 2012. Mrs Justice Hogg sided with Butler despite objections from police, social services and Ellie's maternal grandfather, Mr Gray. "We tried to fight it tooth and nail but every time we protested we were told we were troublemakers and we were elderly people and we weren't worthy of looking after children," Mr Gray said. "I said I hope you all have a conscience because one day you might have blood on your hands. " Mr Gray said he and his wife used to take Ellie to a children's centre for troubled families every few weeks to see her parents but in two-and-a-half years, her father went only twice and her mother went four times. "She hadn't known them as parents," he said. "But her mother turned around and said 'If you don't come back and live with mummy and daddy we won't love you anymore'. " Mr Gray said he had hoped to adopt Ellie and care for her until she was 18. "She was fantastic, very bubbly, a beautiful little girl, always on the go all the time, lots of energy like little children have, very brainy, nobody's fool. It was the best years of our life. " He said Ellie had nightmares that social workers would come and return her back to her parents. Mr Gray saw Ellie the day before she died, in October 2013. "We had half an hour to see her and she wasn't the Ellie we knew. "She had bruises on her forehead and scratches, her hair was all bedraggled. She had odd shoes, socks and clothes and looked as though she had been dragged through the back of a hedgerow. "You could see her eyes were sunken and there was sadness in her eyes. " He added: "Stories from her and Butler saying she was rude and lazy are complete and utter false lies. She was a gorgeous little girl and it was a great privilege to be her grandparent. " Speaking to the Victoria Derbyshire programme, he described Gray as Butler's partner, and not his daughter as he had disowned her. "You don't think one of your own offspring could possibly be involved in a terrible, tragic crime. Unfortunately she was," he said. "I understand he was violent and controlling but I think she's also capable of being the same with him. " He added he thought the violence in the household was "50/50" between Butler and Gray, and that Gray should have been jailed for at least 20 years, and that Butler should have had 40 years. "Jennie was aggressive and threatening. I had a premonition that Ellie wouldn't be safe. "I think she [Jennie] knew what had happened because she knew what he was capable of. " He added that more needed to be done to protect vulnerable children. "I believe the social services laws have got to be brought into the 21st century and the family courts system has to be changed radically. "Somebody has got to stand up and make sure no other child gets hurt like my granddaughter got hurt. "I will make it my goal for the rest of my life to fight for any child to be saved. "

Manila shakes up for city-wide earthquake drill At 09:00 (01:00 GMT) across Manila, radio stations, companies, churches and schools sounded the earthquake alarm, signalling the start of the drill The city saw scenarios such as collapsed buildings, fires, stampedes and looting to test how rescue teams would respond. Containers were placed across Metro Manila containing medicine, tents, rescue equipment and other material needed for rescue and emergency response. The drill involved all government units in Metro Manila as well as hospitals, businesses, schools, mall operators and religious sectors. The ShakeDrill was organised by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), which aims to prepare residents for a future quake. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology says a powerful earthquake could hit the country anytime within the next 50 years. Last year's first-ever ShakeDrill was deemed a success, with 6.5 million people participating, though authorities hoped to beat that number this year. Drills were held simultaneously in the nearby provinces of Cavite, Rizal, Laguna and Bulacan.
