D.I.F.D. is a youth-driven initiative focused on raising awareness and inspiring conversations about youth mental health, created by friends and family of Daron Richardson who lost her life to suicide at the young age of 14. Daron played for the Kanata Senators Bantam AA and was a member of Team James at the 2010 Winter Games. D.I.F.D. is inspired by hope for a future where young people will reach out for help without fear or shame. D.I.F.D. supports programs and initiatives aimed at transforming youth mental health.

The Ontario Women's Hockey Association is inspired by the strength and commitment of Daron’s parents, Stephanie and Luke and her sister Morgan as they work tirelessly to create awareness and reduce stigma. They are truly an inspiration and are having a very positive impact in carrying forward the message that youth mental health is worth talking about.

1 in 5 youth are affected by mental illness, but only 1 in 6 receive treatment or service; 42% of youth say they would feel uncomfortable revealing they had a mental illness; Suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15‐24 year old Canadians.

D.I.F.D.

The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association has joined the effort to raise awareness about youth mental health issues.

ONTARIO WOMEN’S HOCEY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2012‐2013

CELEBRATION OF FEMALE HOCKEY

We begin our report with a tribute to the special friends and family we have lost this year and also to the physical and emotional victims of the Boston Marathon. The sporting community is truly united through competition and cooperation as we work together to strengthen the opportunities that provide positive life experiences.

The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association continues to be a world leader in female hockey opportunities. This season, we had the honour of partnering with Sports and Entertainment and on the successful delivery of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Women’s Hockey Championship. During this event, three hundred and eighty‐seven OWHA teams participated in the Ottawa segment of the 2013 Provincial Championships. Many more local and out‐of‐town members joined in the celebration, sharing in the world‐ record attendance at the April 5th Canada/Finland game! TSN featured more crowd shots than ever before while commentators Cheryl Pounder and were brought to tears by the enthusiasm of the female hockey teams. At the conclusion of the game, all of these young players singing the National Anthem brought a tear to many eyes. Canada’s capital city was alive with Canada’s game ‐ women’s hockey!

The 2013 World Championship had a profound impact on the future of the women’s game. The IIHF Team Directorate expressed their appreciation of the OWHA game with a standing ovation at their normally formal meeting. Delegates from various countries experienced the scope of female hockey at all ages, levels of ability and saw the commitment of support staff, the quality of on‐ice officiating and strength of enthusiastic volunteers and supporters. Facility staff in Ottawa advised the City that they had never seen such a well organized event. Sincere thanks and congratulations to everyone who attended as your contributions and promotion of female hockey have left a positive impact.

The OWHA continues to support D.I.F.D., a youth‐driven initiative focused on raising awareness and inspiring conversations about youth mental health. Created by friends and family of Daron Richardson, a Bantam AA player who lost her life to suicide at the young age of 14, D.I.F.D. is inspired by hope for a future where young people will reach out for help without fear or shame. D.I.F.D. supports programs and initiatives aimed at transforming youth mental health. Hockey is a game with many stakeholders coming together to create a supportive and positive environment for participants to excel physically and emotionally. It is our responsibility to praise people who are doing something right, thereby maximizing their self‐esteem and performance.

Many young girls dream of following their role models and donning the Team Canada jersey. In order to support their dream and also give them the skills to take them to school and university teams, it is important to provide each player with the knowledge and infrastructure to maximize her potential. The best hockey players are great athletes who are given the opportunity to train, play and thrive in a positive environment. Perspective and a balanced life are critical. Coaches can make or break an athlete.

The OWHA has spent the past few years working with the Ontario High Performance Sport Institute (OHPSI) which is affiliated with the Canadian Sport Institute (CSI). This season, we worked with Dr. Peter Davis on the development and approval of our High Performance Plan. In addition, we have been working with Hockey Canada and Margot Page on our Long Term Player Development Plan (LTPD). Over the next few years, we will be implementing various stages of these two initiatives. Heather Logan, (former OWHA and Hockey Canada High Performance Player) from OHPSI will lead the U18 fitness testing as part of our commitment to Hockey Canada’s Korea and Beyond Program. Our activities will continue to be driven with the OWHA Values at the forefront.

Under the leadership of Laurie Taylor‐Bolton, the OWHA Officiating Program continues to grow and flourish. The High Performance pool of officials were assigned to CWHL, PWHL, OUA, CIS, International and Provincial Championship games. The OWHA held an elite officiating seminar in cooperation with the 2013 World Championship.

We are thrilled with the incredible work of team, association and league volunteers. Female hockey is continuing to thrive in a welcoming and inclusive environment. There are outstanding Fundamentals and House League Programs that provide opportunities to compete and enjoy friendships.

Congratulations to everyone on the successful programs held during the 2012 IIHF World Girls Hockey Days. This year, our goal is increase participants and activities. We are working with our colleagues across Canada on the “Long Game”. Details will be confirmed shortly, but the basic concept is similar to the New Year’s Eve celebration that rolls across the world. The “Long Game” will start in Newfoundland and end in British Columbia with scores tallied as the game moves across Canada. We will keep you informed and share activities through the OWHA web site.

With success, there are issues that can become challenges which can result in opportunities when they are met head on with a commitment to share ideas and move forward as a team. Some of these include the age old struggles such as access to ice, accessibility and critical numbers at a given age and ability level in all geographic areas. Finances and affordability in today’s economic climate remain a concern. In addition, concussion management, mental health, bullying, cyber bullying and perspective remain at the top of our list. We must continue to promote a positive, safe environment.

We have seen high profile cases this year where bullying and cyber bullying has led to suicide. Let’s look at the reality of the impact of verbal and written words, whether they are signed or anonymous. The fact is that many adults carry the pain of verbal taunts and hurtful words for their entire lives. Physical attacks are illegal. Bullying and cyber bullying are violations of the OWHA Code of Conduct, may be illegal and will NOT be tolerated. Administrators must take the lead and lead by example. Coaches and parents are critical to a positive, healthy environment.

Some priorities for the coming season include a focus on 100% compliance of Criminal Record Checks/Vulnerable Sector Searches and the two deep procedures with dressing rooms monitored by properly screened adults. We are addressing the upcoming changes to the Ontario Not‐for‐Profit Act and will be adapting our documents and providing templates for our Teams, Associations and Leagues. Our prime objective is to provide Values‐based leadership at all levels within the OWHA as we work as a team for the benefit of all players.

As we move forward, we do so as individuals and as a team. Every young player is someone’s child, relative and role model. Every OWHA participant is our teammate to whom we share the responsibility of providing a safe and fun environment for them to thrive as athletes and as people. Every stakeholder – coach, trainer, manager, administrator, volunteer, official, fan and supporter – has an obligation to follow the OWHA Handbook and Code of Conduct. Each person can and should make a difference.

The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association joined Hockey Canada and the IIHF to celebrate World Girls’ Hockey Weekend on October 13‐14, 2012. As a leader in developing and promoting female hockey, the OWHA encouraged associations and teams to host various celebratory events over the weekend. Here in the OWHA, World Girls’ Hockey Weekend focused on: Providing opportunities for girls and women of all ages to try the game for the first time; Providing resources and mentoring to females to explore coaching, officiating and high performance; Highlighting female hockey in our province, from beginner programs to the highest levels; and current players becoming role models in the community and ambassadors of our sport.

Over 50 events were hosted by 30 different associations/teams over the course of the weekend. A grand total of over 10,000 participants across the province took part in celebrating female hockey!

Events included: • Hockey Marathon and Fundraiser in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in Waterloo, ON including CWHL, OUA and PWHL games • One Goal sessions in Ottawa, ON where equipment was provided to young girls who were able to try hockey for the first time • Introduction to Hockey sessions in Brantford, ON with instruction lead by Olympians Becky Kellar and Cheryl Pounder
