Predictable reaction: Eye-roll. Smirk. Maybe pff t! I hope it happens. Seriously. Is Rice driven by ego, self-preservation and insincerity? Per- haps. Maybe highly likely. So what? Where is the harm? The point is that Rice is trying to do some good here. He’s ‘It’s definitely good to get two in a row and win a series for the first time in a while’ owned up to his crimes, and obviously needs the work. “All the scrutiny that I’ve got, it was deserved, because domes- tic violence is a horrible thing,” Rice told USA Today Sports this past week. “Me donating my salary is something that’ll be from Texas Rangers’ Delino DeShields teals second, sliding past the base the heart for me. But I know there’s a lot of people aff ected by domestic (Kansas City Star/TNS) violence, and every dollar helps. It’s raising awareness.” Will it also raise eyebrows? Of course it will, much like the cyni- cal shots aimed at Michael Vick when he became an unlikely advocate, speaking up against animal cruelty. Yep, same guy as dog-killer Michael Vick, who served a year and a half of his 23-month sentence in a federal prison for his role in a dog- fighting operation. As a dog lover and owner, I supported Vick’s redemption road as well. What he did was despicable. What Rice did was despi- cable. But all anyone can do with their life is move on and try to live a better one. Vick has done as much with his conflicted image. He appeared before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in Decem- ber, lobbying for passage of an animal-rights bill that would allow police off icers to rescue dogs or cats from vehicles if it reaches an unsafe temperature. Rice is looking for his redemptive journey as well, though he faces other challenges, mostly performance-based. Vick had some mileage left in his playing career. Quarterbacks are always at a premium. Running backs are not in a league that is pass-happy. Rice has some very strong negatives, including the fact that he is push- ing 30 and had a spotty 3.1 yards per carry average the last time he took the field in 2013. The fact that he was once a the three- time Pro Bowl running back amounts to ancient history. Rice’s chance at redemption is a long one, but it merits consid- eration. “I’d say give him a chance,” said Carol Wick, former CEO of Har- bor House, a domestic-violence shelter in Central Florida. But like many people, Wick raises concerns about sincerity. “It’s always hard when you look at a situation like that and you see the person is trying to do something for themselves to get back into the NFL. ... Abusers are always self-serving.” Statistics indicate that 50 % of abusers can change. By all ac- counts, Rice is in the positive half of that 50-50 population. Give it a coin flip. Better yet, give the man a chance, give the man a job, so he can do some good in this world. Whether he’s truly sincere of not, the end game is a good thing.

ll Blacks coach Steve Hansen yesterday re- signed with the New Zealanders until 2019, giving him the chance to defend the World Cup in Japan. AHansen has already been involved in two World Cup wins with the All Blacks, as assistant coach in 2011 and head coach in 2015, overseeing a spell of unprecedented success. “It’s good news for everyone involved in rugby in this country,” New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew told reporters. Hansen’s existing contract was due to expire next year, when the British and Irish Lions tour New Zealand. He said the recent 3-0 Test series win over Wales had confi rmed he still had the passion for the job and he de- cided to continue after discussions with his family. A fan had accidentally dis- lodged a pin and the arch came crashing down, knocking Yates off his bike and leaving him with a bloody chin.”I’ve got stitches in my chin and my legs are sore but I got pretty lucky,” Yates said. Daring descent: Arguably the eighth stage was the one that set the tone for what was to follow as Froome demonstrated a never-before-seen dexterity. He attacked over the top of the final climb and while Nairo Quintana, his expected main rival, hesitated, Froome adopted an awkward, crouched position on his bike while pedalling furiously to snatch 23 seconds from his main challengers, winning the stage and claiming the yellow jersey that he would never relinquish. Taming the wind: Froome consolidated not only his lead in the race but his growing reputa- tion as the complete rider as he broke away alongside world champion Peter Sagan in the final 12km of the 11th stage. “All day my teammates protected me, right to the end of the stage. When I saw Sagan go away I thought, ‘I have to follow him and maybe together we can get there’,” said Froome.
