Manhattan September-October 2014 Installation of Trunk Water Mains Along Grand Street Project Phase I: Grand St. between Broadway and Bowery Phase II: Grand St. between Bowery and Essex St. Project # MED 609(606) The New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) is managing a capital construction project MED609(606) along Grand Street between Broadway and Essex Street, including each intersection. DDC will install new trunk water mains, new traffic signs, street lighting, reconstruct distribution water mains, new roadway surface, curbs and sidewalks in certain locations, as well as, rehabilitate sewer, and upgrade private utilities. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by Spring 2017. Phase I of this project is scheduled to be completed by Fall 2014. Phase I final restoration has begun in April, 2014. All 36” Trunk Water Main including Necessary Appurtenances Have Been Constructed (Over 2,000 feet) 5. Landmark Site: Borough of Brooklyn Tax Map Block 955, Lot 1. On April 4, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark oJ Public Bath No. 7 and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Two witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. The hearing was continued to June 8, 1982. One witness spoke in favor of designa tion. There were no speakers in opposition to designation . Two letters have been received in favor of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS When opened in 1910, Brooklyn 1 s Public Bath No. 7 was described as being the most ornate public bath which had been constructed in that borough; it was also the first in Brooklyn to boast a 11 plunge11 or swimming pool. None of . tts predecessors survive today. Designed by Raymond F. Almirall, Public Bath No. 7 is a striking example of the nee-Renaissance style employed for many of the public baths constructed in New York City during the first decade of this century. Use of this style had the effect of giving the act of bathing as much importance as those activities conducted in such similarly styled buildings of the per- iod as banks and libraries; cleanliness was thereby promoted. -

Built 1905-1909; architects Hoppin, Koen and Huntington~ Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block lt72, Lot 31. On July 11, 1978, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Former Fblice Headquarters Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No .3). The building had been hears previously in 1966, 1970 and 1974. The hearing had been duly advertised in accondance with the provisions of law. Seven witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPI'ION .AND .ANALYSIS Designed by the architectural firm of Hoppin and Koen, the former New York City Fblice Headquarters building at 240 Centre Street was built between 1905 and 1909 and stands today as one of New York City's most important examples of the Edwardian Baroque style and of the Beaux-Arts principles of design. On May 6, 1905, Mayor George B. McClellan, amid the ceremony of a police band and mounted troops, wielded a silver trowel to lay the cornerstone of the building which was hailed by the press as the most up-to-date of its kind in the world. 1 Since the establishment of the first police office at City Hall in 1798 when "to facilitate the apprehension of criminals" an effort was made to supplement the traditional night watch, 2 the New York Fblice Department had witnessed the uneasy growth of the nation 's largest city. -

Descriptive Summary Creator: Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) Title: Berenice Abbott’s Changing New York papers Dates: 1935-1938 Abstract: Berenice Abbott was an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photographs of New York City architecture and urban design in the 1930s. Abbott’s Changing New York papers document a portion of the Changing New York photography project, funded by the Federal Art Project, including research notes collected from 1935-1938 to provide context for the photography, and documentation from 1938-1939 of the editing process for the captions of the Changing New York publication. Extent: Seven boxes (8.75 linear feet) Accession numbers: Archive status. Activity 08574. Language: English Biographical Note Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) was born in Springfield, Ohio in 1898. In 1918 she moved with friends from Ohio State University, her alma mater, to New York’s Greenwich Village, where she was heavily influenced by artists such as Eugene O’Neil and Sadakichi Hartmann. Following other artists to Europe, Abbott moved to Paris in 1921, where she met Man Ray and developed an interest in photography. She honed her craft in Berlin and Paris.
